Before I mention about the weird egg-man, let me first thank my boss for giving me possibly the most serious subject to write about this year. Cheers for that!
Regardless, this is a very important blog post, so read on…
The PlayStation Network has loads of tools for getting social. From instant messaging, video chat and sharing photos; to sharing your SingStar performances, creating Buzz! Quizzes and meeting up with friends in PlayStation Home.
As with any social environment, it’s really important that you know how to stay safe and what tools are available to you to ensure that you can stay in control of your online experience. And this, my friends, is where the weird egg-man comes in…
www.ps-playsafeonline.com is a website developed specifically to tell our gaming community, parents of gamers or even those just interested in the gaming world what you can do to stay in control of your gaming experience, and what we do to help you in that endeavor. There you can find tips on using your PS3’s parental control settings to limit access to features like chat for your children, how to maximise the security of your PSN Online ID and even what to do if someone is giving you grief over PSN. There’s also an explanation of how games are rated and a big glossary of terms – so you’ll understand the information even if you’re new to the gaming world.
We would really, really like you to check it out. Even if you only go there to watch the weird egg-man spin around and make funny noises, please read some of the information presented or save it to your bookmarks for future reference.
There is one especially important message that I’d like to tell you here and now though, and that is this: No member of Sony Computer Entertainment staff will ask you for your PlayStation Network password, ever. And nor should you give it to anyone else. It’s your key to the online gaming world, so look after it. Heed this, and your PlayStation online experience will be all the better for it.
Always with love –
MusterBuster

Man that is one WEIRD egg man.
Thanks MB, great to see SCEE caring for its customers!
Just out of interest, are there yet any plans to allow a Sub Account to be upgraded to a Master account? I really need a Master Account these days, but absolutely do not want to lose my trophies.

I think this is a really great site and its great to see you posting it here!
It would be even great still if maybe it was pushed in Home too? Maybe a poster in Home Square or in the hand held computer thing?
Merry Christmas!

You might be on to something there! I’ll have a chat with Alex Weekes (AKA Thylaudax) and see what he thinks

@ No 5 and MB
Go one step further and put the Weird Egg Man in Home Square as an interactive Information Board.

There is no option to choose Ireland as your country

@ No 7
I like that idea! Better still, have it as an interactive quiz on how to stay safe!
Also, it should be moving, and making all those weird noises. Otherwise it wouldn’t be cool.

@10
LBP Water is FREE, its the PotC level pack that isn’t.
You should be prompted to d/l an update when you load the game!

Ooh, yeah, MB, talking about PSN vouchers, is there any chance of us getting £10 versions? I realise having 50 and 20 allows you to get more money off people, but a £10 card would be really really useful.

Woah, that was a very serious blog post!
Oh well, I guess Sony need to be seen to be taking their corporate social responsibility seriously.
Good work for raising awareness of an important issue – does that mean EU Home can have media sharing in personal spaces now then?
P.S. I agree that it’s a good idea to promote this campaign within Home itself, either on billboards or with a short film on the screens/in the cinema. I also think it should have a ‘square’ on the ‘What’s New’ page of the XMB…

@ Peskdale61 – water IS free, just search for community levels that feature water (just like the Paint Gun). What isn’t free is the Pirates of the Caribbean level pack (with trophies) and the Water creation pack (so you can make your own water levels) – both of these things are included in the £4.79 download…
If you want a PSN card search online as several places, for example Zavvi, sell the £20 card for £15.95!!! You won’t get it deliveried before Christmas now though…

infact and this is just food for thought for next year but why not have an eggman sitting on a wall on home square. even giving out little eggman saying a little nersery ryhme and giving ornaments for those who click on him, a bit like santa in the Xmas space!
What do you think?

@ MatthewSFC, is it easy to report someone from the XMB? I’ve never tried this (or rather have never had to). I know it’s really easy to submit a grievance report in Home and LBP using the Select button, but I’m not aware of any similar functionality on the Friends/Block list?
LOL maybe I should take a look at that site afterall…

cool initiative, and i really like the glossary! there’s stuff there i didn’t know about (but i don’t really “talk” online) and i only have one thing to point out: should a young kid read this, there are words and phrasings far to complicated to them (at least in Portugal’s version of the site).
Kudos!

Its a shame things like this are even needed really. In my opinion “Staying safe” online can be summed up in 2 other words “Common Sense”. But yeah for people who havent learnt it yet or are to young to know, these things are worth having.
Meh.. Ive just got a thing about stuff on the news etc about the internet being very dangerous..when well…it isnt.
Either way, good job
