Hi there, PlayStation fans!
My name is Dan Teasdale. I’m DeliciousBees on the PlayStation Network, but more importantly I’m also the Lead Designer on Rock Band 2!
We’re perfectionists over here at Harmonix, and we want to make sure that everyone’s Rock Band experiences are as awesome as they possibly can be. With that in mind, I’m proud to announce that the Rock Band team has finalized a software update for Rock Band 2 on the PlayStation 3 that addresses some common feature requests from our fans. We’ve also added some great new functionality that we think you’ll be excited to try out when the software update arrives this Thursday.
This update wouldn’t be possible without the feedback and suggestions that we receive from everyone in both the Rock Band and PlayStation communities. Everybody here at Harmonix takes your forum posts and suggestions to heart, and we wouldn’t be able to make our games as awesome as they are without all of the feature requests and feedback that we get from you on a daily basis. So from all of us here at Harmonix, thank you, and please keep letting us know what you’d like to see in future updates and games!
This update includes:
- “Sort by Stars” in Quickplay. If you hit the “Sort” button on the Song Select screen, you’ll come to a brand new sort that orders songs by the star ratings that you’ve achieved on each song. Each star rating gets a category, as well as an “Unplayed” category for songs that don’t have a star rating recorded. Finally, you can record your progress towards gold starring every song in your library!
- Improved “Sort by Stars” fix: Players will not have to beat a previous high score to record a star rating for their songs.
- Chord HOPO improvements: If you’ve played The Beatles: Rock Band, you’ll notice much more robust handling of chord hammer-ons and pull-offs. This patch implements those changes in Rock Band 2 to provide a more natural chord hammer-on/pull-off experience.
- Velocity Sensitivity on Ion Drum Kits: Ion Drum kits now support velocity sensitivity in both drum fills and Drum Freestyle mode.
- Rock Band Network Store Support: When the Rock Band Network goes live, select songs will be available for PlayStation 3 users through a new storefront available in game. Stay tuned for more information closer to the launch of RBN!
- SingStar Wireless Microphone Support. Rock Band 2 now supports the SingStar Wireless Microphones currently available through Europe! Finally, you can now have a fully wireless Rock Band experience on your PlayStation 3!
We’re extremely happy to be able to finally release this update for the PlayStation 3 version of Rock Band 2. We know many of you are rabid PlayStation rockers, and it’s a priority for us to make sure that everyone gets the best experience playing Rock Band. On behalf of everyone here at Harmonix, we hope you enjoy the new features!
Rock,
-DanT

Loving Rock Band 2, thanks for the update! Haven’t got wireless singstar mics but was planning on getting them, so it’s nice to know they will work.
Waiting for Lego Rock Band to come in the post atm, it has been 2 weeks ! Looks great, being patient

Awesome! Very nice to see the SingStar wireless mics being added, would this also mean we can use both mics to sing together?
Great job on the update!

Nice to see updates coming BUT where is the voice chat support? I feel left alone here. It’s still not possible to get voice chat out of my original Sony headset while playing RB2 (voice chat comes out of my “regular sound system” but this is not an option. You cannot here anybody and it’s totally distracting to your playstyle…)
Best Regards
MOJO

Wow, great news to hear about this update. I’ll defs get around to checking it out…
…only that I’m an Australian and we STILL DON’T HAVE THE GAME!!! The game has been available in the rest of PAL territories since last year (the disc even has the Australian classification rating on it) but no one from EA/Harmonix will fess up about when we will see it officially released down under.
And yes, I know we can always just import these pal versions and ignore this insult to Australian distributors. However, I’m also waiting on the export key to transfer Rock Band 1 tracks to RB2 (which is supposed to be available via the PS Store) so can we at least have the key made available?
Sorry if I got a bit mean, but its treatment like this that gets Australian gamers extremely frustrated. I’ve put PLENTY of hours into both Rock Band 1 and Beatles Rock Band, and just want to show more support to Harmonix.

Trust me, as a guy with Australian citizenship I can relate to how frustrating the delays have been in getting Rock Band 2 out in Australia and New Zealand.
The good news is that Rock Band 2 was released in New Zealand recently! This means that disc export should be available for Rock Band 1 players in both New Zealand and Australia when export functionality goes live soon.

They should do this for Rock Band 1 too, given how long it took for Harmonix to release it over here.

Hurray on the Wireless Singstar support!!! I wasn’t aware until I got my mics on Xmas morning that they didn’t work with RB2.
Helly Yeh gonna be screaming down the house singing along to Iron Maiden now!!!
Thanks you guys at Harmonix!!!

You know we’d be much more impressed if the same patch hadn’t been available on 360 since SEPTEMBER!! And if the game had been out over here at the same time as RB2 in the USA. It’s till not even out in Australia [DELETED]!! It’s a great game, and I’d recommend it to anyone, but being a PAL PS3 owner somehow places you right at the bottom of HMX’s list of priorities….

At last! Excellent news HMX!
Nice to see you guys here on the blog too. Been waiting for this update since it hit ‘that other console’ a few months ago. Been looking forward to Star rating sorting and the singstar wireless mic support. The star rating werevery well implemented in Lego:RB btw.
I hope this update does fix the voice chat like the user requested above. Keeps me from playing online when i cannot communicate with my buddies properly.
Thx HMX you guys keep making awesome games and releasing awesome dlc and ill keep happily handing over my dosh.

Great with an update, but I have some important questions.
Hope you will listen and respond to what I have to say.
Especially since you say that that is what you do at Harmonix in your statement above:
“Everybody here at Harmonix takes your forum posts and suggestions to heart, and we wouldn’t be able to make our games as awesome as they are without all of the feature requests and feedback that we get from you on a daily basis. So from all of us here at Harmonix, thank you, and please keep letting us know what you’d like to see in future updates and games!”
If not answered I guess you don’t really care about us anyway and you told a lie?
Hope not.
Here is my questions which I like to have answered.
Why is the locked save-issue not fixed?
My old PS3 recently died and I got a refurb as a replacement. I am almost to scared to play and download Rock Band DLC, for when my new system dies.
This would be no problem if the save-files were linked to the PSN-id, instead of an ancient hardware-lock.
Why did you choose to lock the saves on PS3?
Looking forward to your answers.

Any chance that Rock Band 2 will find it’s way to Australia. It hasn’t been refused classification has it? ROFL

My wireless Singstar mic works fine and always has done, albeit only the blue one.
Like P11 I’d also question why the game saves are locked – I lost all my progress when I changed to a PS3 slim.
Also I’d hoped the update (rumoured for a while) was going to allow individual DLC tracks to be rmeoved or at least disabled.
Otherwise good to see continued support for the game… will there be any further updates ?

Great work.
I would also like news on a Australian Rock Band 2 release. Hopefully sometime soon?

Great update and I appreciate it.
I’m a New Zealander and I appreciate that we have the game finally. I also feel for the Australians who don’t have it.
I only have one major complaint. The disc export functionality should be available for New Zealanders now. It’s illegal to advertise false functionality in video game instruction booklets in New Zealand under our consumer law, which I swear I’m pretty conversant with. All fair and reasonable steps must be made to inform your customers here of your steps to rectify the situation. This hasn’t happened and “soon” is not specific enough. This function is in the instruction book as available, yet not implemented.
Consumers aren’t unreasonable though, a decent estimate of when this function can be expected would clear the air.
Sorry to sound a little heavy handed about this, but it’s a heavy penalty for consumers to miss out on an advertised function.

Thanks Dan for getting back to my previous comment. I heard rumors about that NZ release, but was never able to confirm (can you give me an exact date of when this happened just for curiosity sake?)
If its not too much trouble to ask, what exactly were the problems with getting RB2 out here in Australia compared to Europe? My only guess is the lack of a clear marketing window for the game since we got the first Rock Band so late, and we’ve had a constant stream with Beatles and Lego Rock Band since. Was it a lack of faith issue with retails after the situation with the first Rock Band game and its sales? Somali pirates hijacking your shipments?
And while I am happy with my current Beatles instruments, is there any word for fans who would like to pick up the standard Rock Band 2 strat or wireless drum kit? The first generation of RB hardware has been all but cleared out of retail stores over the last holiday season (serious clearing out, $10 guitars, $10 drums) So does this mean soon?
Thanks

@Dudley ONeill, (comment 16). Yes it has been released in New Zealand, not sure what makes you think it hasn’t. Brought my copy just before christmas, even have a link here to a site where it’s for sale.

Can any New Zealands suggest a good place to purchase Rock Band 2 online that ships to Australia?

I believe the site I posted above does, not sure though. I actually think the guy from Harmonix above was vaguely hinting that it might be a way to grab the game prior to it’s Australian release for those in a hurry to get it. It’s the exact same region and I’m 99.999999% sure it’ll be the same disc Aussie users will get.

Dan, loving the whole Rock Band experience, from the original to the Beatles. Having an issue trying to update though. Is there any issue with this update, as it can see update 1.2, but then waits for 10 seconds before it starts the download, and then restarts the PS3. I have tried several times now.
Any input on this would be greatly appreciated, as playing on line is the mutts nuts!

Is there any way to turn up the sensitivity of the SingStar mics?
I feel I have to practically shout through the mic before it registers a tone.

@pbowes100
To bypass the resetting issue:
Wait till the music starts to play.. then hit “OK” to update!
