Any chance of a larger proportion of releases getting simultaneous rent and buy release? Seems wierd that your content source doesn’t support this yet other services do…
Nice one setting up a regular post day to keep us updated though

Hi Olga,
I have been asking you in previous posts why I have not received the Transformers HD voucher as part of the launch promotion. I have contacted Sony Support by email and have not heard back anything! Has anybody received their download voucher for it as part of registering the PS3 as stated in the promotion at launch?
Posted on 12 January, 2010 at 12:45 pm by Olga Puzanova
Hello,
all vouchers have been emailed early December so if you were qualified you should have received it by now. I suggest you give a call to customer service again so we could investigate it for you.

Havent seen Liar Liar in awhile, would be great if more old movies were added, like dumb and dumber etc rather that just having new releases and a few classics.

Inglourious Basterds is a brilliant film. I pre-ordered the limited edition on Blu-ray, so I had it first day of release.
I haven’t seen any of the other movies, except for Liar Liar, which was quite enjoyable. Too bad Jim Carrey’s lost his touch now.

Also would it be possible to begin adding a price in pounds/euros on these blog posts?

Also when Poland?

I won’t even consider renting/buying a video from the PSN store until you start offering them with more than 2.0 audio.
Posted on 12 January, 2010 at 12:53 pm by Olga Puzanova
there are quite a few titles now available with 5.1 audio, ex. Angels and Demons, Inglourious Basterds, The Hangover, Public Enemies and many more. And we keep adding more each week!

I tried to use this service over Christmas. Let me start this rant by saying I have a very good connection. If I am downloading from my newsgroups 700MB takes less then 10 minutes and 7GB takes less then an hour. Downloads from the PSN store are fine except for the video store…
I rented Air Force One in HD, 7.5GB file but took 18 hours to download.
I rented BTK in SD, 1.5GB file but took 6 hours to download.
I couldn’t even watch BTK as it was downloading far to slowly.
Is anything going to be done about this, the crazy prices and the total lack of RENTABLE new content compared with other rental services.

Is there any information on when TV shows will be coming to the store? I prefer to own my movies on a Blu-Ray but would gladly download some TV shows that I want to watch or catch up on.

Any chance of the video store being updated to the Qriosity model so that we can download and stream movies at the same time. I haven’t used the video store yet and I don’t intend to until it becomes alot quicker.

Hi there – really like the video store but I have one big frustration. The navigation for films to rent is a pain. I’d like to be able to go into the store with the ambition to rent a film and be able to browse through just rent-able films via genre, new release, collections, top 20… I might just be missing how to do this but currently I can only see new releases, genre, etc with all films mixed together – rent and buy.
The rental only section lets me either search for a specific title or browse A-Z. Not exactly friendly. I don’t always know what I want to watch I just want to browse to find a film that interests me. More like I use a video rental store. I’d certainly use the store more if you could filter out the buy only titles.
And if you can do this already – apologies and please tell me how!

A quick request for these updates. Is there any chance that we can have the prices in £/€ as per the game updates? Price is my biggest barrier to entry for this business model so I’d like to know how high the prices are when content is released.
I’d also like to add my voice to the clamour that prices on the video store are just too high. I can pick up classic DVD’s in Tesco for as little as £3 and while new release prices are more comparable, the content offered on the physical media far outstrips its poor digital cousin.
I’m not about to pay £11.99 for a digital version of Leon when I can get the film on DVD with special features and 5.1 sound for £7 http://www.tescoentertainment.com/store/dvd/leon/8%3a518789/
Consum ers are not stupid, we know that putting a film on PSN is much cheaper than printing a disc and an inlay putting it in a box and putting the box on a shelf. Until this reduction in COGs is reflected in the list price of download movies I shall not be using the store and I would urge every other PSN user to do the same.

Posted on 12 January, 2010 at 10:47 am by stormyuk
@bazza, agreed the minimum these days should be 5.1 DD. Why do the movies on the store not detail the audio details? I wont be touching any film downloads until this happens.

@31. Or you could do the sensible thing and buy Leon on Blu Ray for £7.48!

@34
I think you misunderstand his comment, the video store is run exactly the same as the PSP store. The content is OVER PRICED when compared with the physical version.
I’ve said time and time again if you want to make money via digital distribution then people like SONY have to stop being so greedy. £29.99 for a downloadable compared to its retail NON SALE price of £22.99.
As consumers we know the overheads saved are MASSIVE as you don’t need to buy the parts, press the discs, print the inlays, print manuals, pack the cases, ship the content to suppliers etc…. All you do is HOST it on the already existing servers.
£11.99 to buy Star Trek in SD when EVERY where else is selling it for £9 or less is stupid, not to mention you can’t choose to rent it!

I’m voting with my feet!
I shall not be buying or renting any films from the PSN until:
- Films have 5.1 sound. It’s laughable that even the premium HD content is stereo. I have also noticed that Sony appear to have removed (or are not publishing) the audio details for a lot of the films.
- Digital versions of the films are cheaper than DVD’s. I can buy the latest Harry Potter from the Local Supermarket for £7.99 (which is walking distance), or pay £12.99 from PSN. The funny thing is, it’s actually quicker for me to buy the DVD from the shop, rather than wait ages for the downloads from PSN.
I also have a Windows Media Center PC, and I currently ‘rent’ movies via iTunes (which has more content, generally cheaper and 5.1 sound)
Navigation is also terrible in PSN – surely Sony could do much better.
I would prefer to use PSN over iTunes if the above were fixed, so it’s up to Sony to either fix the above, or miss out on my business.
Very tempted to just get an AppleTV and forget about movie rentals from PSN, but that would then be another device and remote for the living room.

(Sorry my post above should have read… Digital versions of the films are more expensive than DVD’s)
BTW, does anyone know if the USA have similar ‘issues’ with movie rentals? (i.e. no 5.1, price, download speed, lack of content)
38
Posted on 12 January, 2010 at 12:01 pm by iapetus
@31: £7? You’re being ripped off. Amazon have it for under a fiver. iTunes has a digital download for £7, though.
The simple fact of the matter is that digitally distributed movies should be *cheaper* than the DVD equivalent. If I’m not getting extra features, not getting a physical medium that I can take with me wherever I want, and the company selling me the product isn’t paying for physical distribution and manufacturing costs then I shouldn’t be paying extra for it.
Sony’s video download service not only asks extra, but it asks more than any other comparable service. They’re pricing themselves out of the market, and nobody should be using the service – if you want to rent a movie, do it via Virgin or Sky instead. If you want to buy a movie, do it online or (if you absolutely have to have digital distribution) via iTunes.

Again Olga, When will Pineapple Express be available to rent?! As well as many others films. Also get the frikking prices down a bit. Should be £8.99 standard def/£11.99 hi def for all releases. Simples!

Posted on 12 January, 2010 at 1:02 pm by dalts85
Oh and when will the shocking download speeds be improved. You must be dreaming if you think people will leave the system on for 2+ hours to download five gigs of film instead of popping to a local rental store to rent the same film, for cheaper in some cases.

Posted on 12 January, 2010 at 1:30 pm by VictorAnalogy
@SlapnutzUK; iapetus; rengal; Thanks for your responses, I’m not saying that the Tescos price is the best. As many of you have pointed out, there are better deals to be had.
My point is that if you can walk into a supermarket, never mind a specialist retailer or online only distributor, and get a better product, for a better price, you shouldn’t waste your time and money on this service. I think that all of you, and many other people on the site feel the same way.
I think that PSN exclusive games are (by and large) fairly priced. BF1943, Trine, PJ Shooter, all give good value for money as do (in my opinion at least) the PS1 classics FFVII, MGS and Vagrant Story to name my faves. Sony need to apply the same pricing model to their online content that is not PSN exclusive.

Back to the future please
Also can i just say that 1 activation is really stupid i forgot to deactivate my last console for movies but when i went to rent a movie from my new slim console the movie store took my money and then it told me i couldn’t watch it
had to ring customer service to get it sorted and it was all whole mess
so please clear it up!

I would be bothered, if the prices weren’t so much!! PSN Video store is too pricey for what we get!! £11.99 for a SD DOWNLOAD Movie, no thanks!
45
Posted on 12 January, 2010 at 2:10 pm by SlapnutzUK
@VictoryAnalogy
I’ve no issue with the PSN content as it stands. Most is priced about right with the odd exception but the PSP Games (Full Retail) and Video Rental / Purchases are simply priced equal or above there in shop version.
If I can walk 5 miles to TESCO and back and get the film or game cheaper I won’t look at the online offering.
I’d love the prices to be cheaper as I would prefer digital content. Heavy Rain for £24.99 Digitally for example would be a great price compared to the store version of £39.99. After all the £24.99 is give or take a little towards storage / bandwidth pure profit.

hey Olga
do you know if the video store will be coming to Canada anytime soon,
i’m surprised us Canadians are not running on an older firmware or still in the HOME closed beta, why oh why does every country have different options and features, why can’t you guys hold things off and let everyone have the same options and features at the same time? it’s almost like your competing against yourselves in different countries really, well Europe and U.S. wins that’s for sure, throw us a bone here in Canada will ya? thank you, keep up the good work!

we are working on Canada store as well as other EU stores, hopefully I will be able to provide you with more updates very soon
