Any sign of a comment on the issue that crops up every week of rental prices for many movies on the store being higher than the price of purchasing them on DVD (a superior format in many ways)?
Didn’t think so.

@almighty-slayer Same here. Bad timing.
I’m still finding streaming a big issue with the video store. It just doesn’t seem fast enough. I started The Hangover (SD) going 45 minutes before I started watching and I still had to stop the film half-way through and wait for it to finish. I have a 10 meg connection (actually getting around 9 meg, which should be ample) and other services I’ve used work without any issues so it must just be the PSN. I’m probably not going to bother getting anything else off the PSNVDS until this is sorted because by the time the thing’s downloaded I’ve started watching something else.

Olga is hardly commited to replying to comments, should take a leaf out of ‘Sir’ Mike Kebby’s book.

As mentioned above any sign of TV shows? Also it would be nice to have trailers of upcoming movies… I would love to watch the Iron Man 2 trailer on my TV.

great idea! you can view lots of theatrical trailers at PlayStation HOME right now but we will look into making them available at the video store as well

Do the new releases have 5.1 pretty much as standard now, as you don’t seem to specify on your blog post one way or the other anymore?
Also is there any hard and fast rule around the pricing and specifically when it becomes a ‘budget’ title or is pricing up to the publisher/studio?
Finally, is there any chance of a fortnightly ‘Special Offers’ feature like the one available on the PSN Games Store? Perhaps some kind of ‘Movie of the Week’ discounted rental?
Posted on 18 January, 2010 at 5:32 pm by Olga Puzanova
Thanks for your comment Apnomis. We try to get most of our HD rentals on with 5.1 where its available, is there a specific titles you’d like me check?
Re. special offers – we ran couple promotions over Christmas and are looking to offer more this year as well.

@ Chimpanzee, 45 minutes buffering on a 10meg connection and it still doesn’t reach the end?! That’s pretty appalling and confirms my fear that the PS Video Store is only useful for ‘pre-booking’ your movie watching, which to me kind of defeats the object of digital distribution…
If I have to decide the day before which movie I want I’d may as well go out and buy/rent it from the high street! The draw of digital distribution is making an off-the-cuff decision to watch something there and then! Let’s hope Sony are able to unveil a service similar to their competition’s ‘Instant-On 1080p’ service at this years E3 (subscription or otherwise)…

Thanks for the update Olga am really enjoying the store have bought 5 films off it and enjoyed watching Godzilla on the bus today with my PSPGO. I do have a few questions
1. Are you going to put up the rest of some series of films? ( There is star trek 2-11 but not 1 and there are Terminator 1, 3 and 4 no 2)
2. Is there any sign of TV shows coming to the Video Service?
Thank you so much for the Video store and keep up the great work

@Dalts
Olga does often reply to many of the comments…Not as much as Kebby but she does reply and is usually helpful. Not everyone can reply as much as Mike – maybe Olga is a busy woman?

The Hangover (Unrated) – Are you sure about this Olga?
The Unrated version hasn’t been released in the UK and the BBFC haven’t classified this version of the film for the UK.
The UK is getting the Extended version (which is the same as the Unrated version IIRC) but is the version that the publisher submitted for sale in the UK.

Do you have any plans for supporting video rental/purchases using tesco / sainsbury’s club card points? e.g. swap for psn credits, or get code to redeem on the video/game store?
The reason I ask is we use our points to swap for blockbuster vouchers. So you could easily change our habits from goin going out to the shop to watching from the internet via the psn store if you introduced such a thing.

It’s true, the service is massively overpriced. For a SD rental £2.49 – £3.49 seems fair. But for HD rentals and particularly for purchasing, there is no way I’d spend any where near that for such a restricted license. This is coming from a user that has spent over £200 on psn games and loves to watch movies.
But put simply blockbuster is cheaper, charges no extra for blu-ray and offers customers discounts when renting multiple movies at once. Alternatively there is love film, charging £12 a month for unlimited postal rentals.

Posted on 18 January, 2010 at 3:17 pm by ptpete
If there was a chance of charging via a subscription service (not unlike netflix, but implemented directly through the PS Store), I’d be much more interested in parting with my cash. With regards to purchasing movies, unless the price is considerably dropped (currently they are approximately 30% more than play.com charges for the DVD!) or DRM restrictions are relaxed/removed I see no reason to get involved. It’s a shame because I live in the middle of nowhere and as such this system of renting should suit my situation perfectly, but it’s over priced and the pricing model isn’t geared towards those of us that like to watch movies regularly. Anyway I’m off to buy GTA Chinatown Wars for £6 on my ipod. My poor PSP..

I think ill just repeat what I wrote last week since it’s about all I can do;
What I’ve read about the ‘PSN video delivery service’ (catchy btw) since its launch is pretty sad. For a company of Sony’s standards some of the problems just shouldn’t be happening.
-How can 5.1 audio not be standard?
-How can you not be offering orginal audio language?
-How can you not be offering optional subtitles?
-How can downloads take such an enormous amount of time?
-How can you not being offering older films (e.g. Pineapple Express – A Sony film btw) to rent? Every film on the store should be available to rent (barring the new releases you are not permitted to alllow rent from day 1.)
-How can the store remain such an unfriendly mess to navigate?
-How can prices remain so high when the content is sub-standard?
Why does it all feel so thrown together?
Rather then bringing this service to new countries, why not bring it up to an acceptable standard to the countries that do have it first? I for one wont be touching it if it comes to Sweden in its current state.
And Olga your posts could be in abit more detail. :/

Hello, i’m a Brit living in Germany. I would like to know if you will have eventually a original language option for the films ( there all mostly films from the US, so crazy not to right?). As i can’t stand something that’s been altered from the original picture like this. It’s just all dubbed. I think most Germans would want this option too. Also i can’t get the Video store from my British account, that must be so kind of Regional lock? That would make sense.
I would love to hear some kind of response about original language option because we were really excited about the video store until we discovered this flaw. Thanks.
I saw The Hangover the other night, very funny indeed!

@17: She always seems to skip the difficult questions that point out the major problems with the video store. How about at least an answer explaining why we can’t have an answer?
(Answer: Because the answer to the pricing question is one that makes Sony look bad any way you spin it…)

@almighty slayer… Yea olga really replies to all the questions that post a negative view on the Video store doesn’t she? These are the questions that people really want answered yet she avoids them.
Stop brown nosing slay.

I’m not brown nosing…In fact i agree that she doesn’t agree to the worst questions (but then neither does Kebby, does he? I don’t read all his replies, but i have never seen him reply to questions involving pricing etc).
I simply said that she does respond to questions. All you said was that she “isn’t committed to replying” and i said she does often reply to comments…Gosh

Why are the video store updates getting smaller every week?
Nov & Dec was a lot bigger than this and was updated daily with movies.
Also why do videos keep getting removed from the store? last time i looked in the rental section we had 608 movies available to rent now it’s on 603

yes i mentioned that aswell and olga denied there were movies getting removed lol they cleary are
Posted on 18 January, 2010 at 5:50 pm by Olga Puzanova
hi seany1, the movies are usually offered as a rental for a limited time period, once rental window expires it dissapears from the rental category but it might eventually come back. We do add new films as rentals every week thou and we dont normally remove any films that are available to buy, as a matter of fact we add more every week

also when will The Final Destination(4) be out to rent on the store? cba paying £13 for it on dvd in the shops.

i am really disapointed with this service all the movies i want to see are not available to rent in hd taking pelham 123, gi joe, g force and so many more, i buy all my movies on blu ray but i like to rent movies also, so does my father he had a samsung bd player and i convinced him to get a ps3 because it does so much more, but he thinks he has wasted money buying a ps3 because when a new movie comes out he can go to the shop and rent it straight away where has this service we got to wait weeks.
34
Posted on 18 January, 2010 at 3:49 pm by seany1
also olga why dont you guys actually upload the film icons onto the main page of new releases today as this is posted yet you need to actually do a search to find the new films lol this is such a half arsed service its unreal lmaoo

Posted on 18 January, 2010 at 3:52 pm by FBZ1501
I agree with most of the above points and feedback and would like to add that there needs to be a ‘whats new to rent’ section to save you from having to surf around for it.
I have Apple TV too and rented my first movie on that, i chose it over the PS3 (even though i wanted to use my PS3) because the movie had 5.1, and Apple don’t have a minium spend so a £4.50 movie didn’t cost me £5!
Incidently it was ready to watch in seconds after hitting download.
Come on Sony, gives us an incentive to use the video store!!

Posted on 18 January, 2010 at 4:00 pm by seany1
its probably just olga that works on the europe video store from her house or something lmao sorry but it sure feels like that with the total lack of everything really . We waited over a year for the store and im sure every1 like me thought with that wait we would be getting the same quality service like the u.s store has with day on date buy and rentals and weekly special offers also all new movies 5.1 with subtitles but i guess its not the u,s team we have its that other team that basically ruins sony game division called SCEE

Hi Olga,
I have emailed SCE Ireland but unfortunately their reply wasnt really helpfull.
I asked about the video store coming to Ireland, can you atleast confirm for us that you are planning on bringing it here as it appears that those who didnt receive it at launch are being forgotten about as we are not hearing any updates.
Thanks

Posted on 18 January, 2010 at 4:36 pm by Shin-Ra
I started an HD rental of Inglourious Basterds on Saturday evening and I haven’t left my PS3 on constantly but it is taking a ridiculous amount of time to download. It’s taking 10-15 seconds just to download 1MB. My connection’s capable of 6MB/sec from servers like Adobe’s, the PS3′s 802.11G WiFi limits that somewhat but I still expect downloads at least in the region of 1-2MB/sec for any paid download.

Posted on 18 January, 2010 at 4:48 pm by Pamperdamps
Hi Olga
In spite of best intentions I have yet to download a movie. I cant help noticing lots of people commenting about slow download speed. I suspect I will have issues as even previewing content from the movie store can stutter.
You mentioned last week that you get very reasonable download speeds. What type of connection do you have (ADSL or cable) and what speed?
I have an 3.5mb ADSL connection. What sort of time do Sony believe it would take me to download an average SD movie.
Lastly but not least what if any recommendations would Sony suggest to improve the speed of downloads e.g network settings on the PS3 or changes on our routers.
Looking forward to your response.

Same old moans, not surprising really, c’mon Sony; authorise somebody to reply to these criticisms, it’s really not fair to just ignore the questions you don’t like (not aimed at the people who respond, I’m sure you’d love to reply!)
I’d love to make more use of this service, but the download speed means I’m unlikely too. Why is it I can download 2.5Gb of “Uncharted behind the scenes” videos in less than 3 hours but it takes over 6 hours to download a 1.6Gb Movie rental? It’s clearly at Sony’s end of things and they appear not to be interested.
Your loss; read the comments: We want to use this service but you’re not making it very attractive or worthwhile.

Same complaints from me I`m afraid. I`ll admit to being bit of a Sony Fanboy but the video service is way to expensive. I`d rather buy the DVD cheaper and at least I can trade it in or sell it when I`m bored of it. If the service is to be huge success like Vidzone then prices need to come down and downloads need to be quicker. Digital downloads will struggle while physical media is cheaper.

I’ve download the odd rental movie and bought one to see what the service was like. I know what people mean about cost, LoveFilm have pay as you go for about £1.99 per film… that includes Blue Ray movies… so its a bit expensive…
But it is a handy service to have… some good movies..
It also works with remote play !
