As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.
We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.
Errors include:
- The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
- When the user tries to sign-in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
- When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game.”
- When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
- Users are not able to playback certain rental video downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date.
We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.
As mentioned above, Please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologise for any inconvenience caused.
For the latest status on this situation please check either PlayStation.Blog, Twitter or PlayStation.com.

This update is not an update. I hope its fixed in the next 24 hours just as much as they HOPE its fixed lol.
Can we play our offline games in safety? Will save game data be ok if I save it now? Before and after the fix? If i earn trophies, will I keep them through the fix???
Should I just leave my PS3 powered off until further notice and play nothing??? Give is an UPDATE, if you can’t give us a fix…
Please

I’ve got to say, this situation has been managed really, really badly.
Everybody knows that sometimes things go wrong with technology – there’s no getting away from that. It cannot be helped.
However, what can be done when this sort of thing happens is for the company – in this case Sony – to manage it’s customers’ expectations properly.
There was absolutely no statement released from Sony for around 12 hours before this one – which is effectively telling us to wait another 24 hours!
I cannot believe that it took the large Sony engineering team that amount of time to diagnose a problem that the PS3 community and guessed at just a couple of hours after the problem started to appear on a large scale.
There should be some kind of internal enquiry at Sony to identify why we have all been left in the dark over this… and why the root cause of the problem was (we know it was the internal clock – but WHY was it the internal clock?)

SONY, you better learn the lesson and ADD MOROCCO TO THE OFFICIALLY SUPPORTED PSN COUNTRIES so that this chaos doesn’t happen again !

Oh, but my fellow users, this is the best. This is hilarious.
“Those affected can still use their machines for offline play or other functionality that doesn’t require network access.” – David Wilson, Sony executive.
”
When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game,”" – Jem Alexander.
Truly, an applause for Sony, whose own employees are at disagreement for whats going on. This is true hilarity!
Welcome to the ApocalyPS3, Now lets quickly repent and go buy Wii-Wiis and Hexbawxes.

and sony have dropped the ball AGAIN. how many times will PSN crash before sony gets it right. and sony wants us to start paying for this s**t. in a comment by sony they said “developers are just getting to grips with our softwear and will be releasing some great games” well sony you couldnt get your own clock right and caused all these consoles to crash. if you cant get it right then i have no faith in your developers to either

I have this error problem too and I am Mad. I am a loyal Playstation owner I bought the original ps then the ps one, The PS2 then came out so I bought that $599 ,then newer games would not work on that so I bought PS2 slim and i have 2 of them then I bought 2 PSP systems one for kids one for me then spent $499 on 80g PS3 then the slims come out for $299 and the old ones we all rushed out to buy dont work. Is this a money grab or what? I WILL NOT BUY A SLIM!!!! I AM NOT MADE OF MONEY!!!!!! IF ANYTHING SONY SHOULD ALLOW US LOYAL CUSTOMERS TO TRADE IN OUR OLD “FAT” ONES FOR 250G SLIMS!!!!!!! WHAT DO THEY SAY TO THAT?

Hello,
Why not let us know in the future on our e-mail problems following our listing on the Playstation network?
We must constantly whether we who must make the step to see why its not working, I found myself as a good customer and there are probably millions of good customer, that the least thing is us Notify on different issues.
Can you keep up the good conduct of affairs and not just tell us in the next 24 hours.
Thank you in advance

This needs URGENT action…I hope Sony HQ are working round the clock on this! I dont understand how there can be an issue with the system calendar when this isnt a leap year….UNLESS, the Algorithm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leap_year#Algorithm) was actually written wrong and the phat PS3′s think that it should actually still be February….well I guess we just wait until tomorrow to see if it corrects itself.
I cant see how they can deploy a software patch over the network now that people cant actually connect to PSN…unless they deploy it via USB…
If they offer to replace bricked phats for slim versions, they had better build a slim model with 4xUSB ports, memory card slots and PS2 backwards compatibility for me!!!

I’m sure that Sony is working hard on this issue, I can’t believe the people who think they’re waiting until midninght to see whether it will fix itself or not. Regardless of whether that’s the case or not they will need to adress it in order to make sure nothing like it happens again. It has already struck like lightning and stabbed them in the back.
Sony are probably doing their best in fixing the issue as we speak, heck I wouldn’t be surprised if someone is working overtime because of this. I’m hoping this is fixed soon, I hold my thumbs for you Sony

I’ve just spent 6 months fighting my way to Commander Rank in Warhawk…if I get busted back down to a Wingman because of this, Sony will have a suicide on their hands!
Why not venture outdoors????? What sort of suggestion is that!!!!

good to hear your on the problem at least, either way after this I’m getting my hands on a PS3 Slim so I don’t have to have the same problem again.

There’s no need to log into the PSN if an update is needed, you can do it from the XMB system update.

Wow…just wow.
The amount of bile being spewed here is amazing. The problem has been around for 1 day…..hell I’ve seen company servers stop working due to software glitches (which is what this is) for weeks while a patch is made. And that’s people who paid thousands of pounds for there equipment. Sony are working on the problem. And for everyone shouting there mouth off about the consoles being faulty they are not, this is a software glitch that has knocked out the DRM which is why you can’t play any games, and seriously seeing that a bug was going to hit on the 1/03/10 is not really something obvious and would probably slip past any companies testing team.
Yes it sucks but these things happen. Are you saying you have nothing else to do. I surely hope not.
I don’t think Sony are waiting till midnight to see if this resolves, since the clocks have been set back to 1/1/2001 I would think that at midnight they will change to…let me think….2/1/2000.
And before any one ask yes I has an original 60gb PS3 which has been affected.

PS3 had not listened to Clocks by coldplay
when it says
closing walls and tickings clocks
anyway thats great that sony is fixing this in 24 hours not in one week

Thanks for keeping us up to date on the issue.
As we have not had access to our PS3′s for over 30 hours (due to NZ being first to get the clock glitch because of timezone), what kind of compensation is going to be given?
83

So if this problem is not fixed within a certain amount of time, will we all be sent a new console?

Posted on 1 March, 2010 at 6:18 pm by richiethebimbler
Well your advice is to not turn the system on. The advice over the fone today was to format my hard drive which i have now done!! hows that for corrupted data!!!
Microsoft may have the RROD but at least they offer to fix it free, Sony have the error code of death 80010514 and do naff all about it!!!
by the way sony thanks for keeping us informed throughout the day of what was going on, its great to be kept in the loop……Sarcasm detetcted??

OK. Although I don’t particularly want to do this at the moment, I shall defend Sony from several retards that have posted herein.
Some of you people are saying along the lines of “why shouldn’t I be able to play my purchased games without internet connection (or connection to the PSN)?”
The fact is: YOU CAN! When the PSN goes down, there are never these sort of problems – in fact the PSN is UP right now. The problem here (although I assumed it was obvious) is that there is a mismatch between the internal time on some of the older PS3s and the actual time on Earth. I.e. games are programmed not to work should the actual date or date at which the game was produced be later than the date at which the PS3 places itself. There must be a similar sort of problem when trying to get online for trophies etc, at which point when this error occurs the PS3 blocks access to online services.

this is bad if this is not fixed tommorrow i expect sony to give all of us a new slim line. if they fix it great we can all play again but if they don’t then we all get a ps3 slim line. we all win both ways.
92
Posted on 1 March, 2010 at 6:23 pm by Goodgemeister
The thing that caused this mismatch in my opinion is very likely to be a bug relating to the PS3′s calender whereby it believed this year was a leap year, or something.
Anyway, summary of this is don’t complain that the Xbox wouldn’t do this or anything, the point you are arguing is different. I’m sure any system would have severe problems should such an issue occur. PS3s do usually work with all games offline or without connection to the PSN.

So, my sons 13th Birthday today. Big party planned – all of his friends over. Nice meal and my wife and myself picked him up a few games yesterday to play after the party ended.
All his friends sitting around the TV … Playstation 3 is turned on, Heavy Rain inserted – massive excitment all round as we all love Sony. WHAM. Error message. 3 hours later, all the kids go home after a very unhelpful phone call to support about the matter. I find out online after my own research that this is basically an internal hardware issue and something that the engineers missed years ago, and weren’t even aware of until it happened.
I think we all expect issues with Technology and problems to occur now and again, but for software that was purchased to be effected in such a catastrophic manner, regardless of whether the system is online or offline is shameful.
It makes me wonder what else might happen in the future that engineers have ‘missed’ during the building and testing phase. Certainly has not served Sony up as being a technological proficient company, thats for sure. Why would they ‘hope’ the issue would be resolved in 24 hours? do they still not actually know?

Posted on 1 March, 2010 at 6:27 pm by Paulus-NL
i am still waiting for my new ps3. so no errors for me today. i also read that even developers have these problems with there debug-ps3′s. i am wondering why this isn;t with the slim versions? they are all running the same OS and firmware updates?

Posted on 1 March, 2010 at 6:28 pm by Ddave_73
@ 91
I win if they replace my ps3 (4 usb ports, card reader, ps2 backwards compatibility, linux as second OS) with a Slim (2 usb ports, no card reader, no ps2 b/c and no linux support) ???
nahh that’s not me winning, that’s me being shafted.

Posted on 1 March, 2010 at 6:28 pm by QTEC
the problem lies with the update so with common scence, you would think they had the tech to step back the update to a previous and then fix the problem, but am i talking ka ka because it seems we all are in the same boat without the proverbial paddle.
And we just spend more money and time to get nothing back, you would think with the size of sony the would have a simular fix like the y2k bug fix to use on the bios system with a pc llllol….
