As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.
We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.
Errors include:
- The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
- When the user tries to sign-in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
- When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game.”
- When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
- Users are not able to playback certain rental video downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date.
We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.
As mentioned above, Please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologise for any inconvenience caused.
For the latest status on this situation please check either PlayStation.Blog, Twitter or PlayStation.com.

Like others, I have my worries that you may just be thinking “lets see if it sorts itself out after midnight”.
That aside, I hope you will be investigating a fallback solution for the future – ie if there are problems with PSN then we should be allowed to play games WITHOUT any need to connect, and without the need for the trophies info to synch. Obviously this is possible to those without an internet connection, and for those of us who, from time to time, may have problems with our internet connection (ie nothing related to Sony or PSN), so a little bit of code that says “ah, things aren’t working, so let’s just bypass it” shouldn’t be too difficult to write.
After a long day at work, and still with about 3 hours of work to do which I’ve brought home, all I want to do is play a couple of games of FIFA – I don’t care about my trophies!

Is this just Sony’s way of boosting revenue and getting rid of the old to make way for the slim?

Just how sorry are you for the inconvenience?
Sorry and dignified enough to offer us some recompense? I hope so as I am on the verge of vowing never to buy another Sony console.

My PS3 date is set to Dec 31 NOT Jan 1!!! Whats that all about?? Also, my premium themes are now classed as ‘corrupted data’. I hope when this is sorted out, my themes are restored or I will asking for compensation!!! This is VERY poor Sony, very poor. This should never have happened. Basically, until this is fixed, in maybe 24 hours, I have a useless lump of £300 plastic, just why I bought a PS3 in the first place. Jeez,at least the Wii is reliable!!! My faith in the Playstation brand has severely dropped because of this, I bought a PS3 because I thought they were reliable and the hardware was superior kit compared to the Xbox 360. What other ‘surprises’ does the PS3 have in store????? Poor.

lol @ the conspiracy nuts
this is not a conspiracy as I am sure sony are aware that even those of us with expired warranties have a great legal case against them and there are potentially millions of people worldwide who will all have a case against them and in all likely hood would win.
if this is not fixed it will cost sony many millions.

Hang on a second people. I’ve had my PS3 for 3 years now and this is the only problem I’ve had. I too miss a good go on COD online but patience is a small price to pay seeing Sony have never charge us all to play online and enjoy our games to the best we could possibly ask for. This just goes to show that the playstation is a great console and will always go that extra mile for their customers. Keep up the good work Sony.

LoL… i was thinking
maybe Sony didn’t expect the older PS3 systems to last so long…
its the PS3 version’s of the 2012 Maya predictions xD

have you guys ever heared about the “y2k-bug”? the console is far to expensive to have these kind of problems and by the way,
since you advice everybody to NOT put on the ps3 until the bug is fixed: sony, would you be so kind as to refund my 3.50 euro to my psn-account for a rented blu-ray (that i will have to give back tomorrow)?
thank you for a ruined evening and yet some more lost money…

will we lose are trophies and data because my mw2 data and trophies are gone..
113
Posted on 1 March, 2010 at 6:45 pm by LiiXed
@P-bassi AKA #111
No, all trophie data and what not is server based, that is why when you want to view your trophies it has to sync first.
once bug is fixed or fixes itself, data (game, not media) will be back to normal.
you’d better cross you fingures Sony, cause in in for a world of hell (and debt) if you don’t get this fixed.
hate to be you guys right now…

this isnt good. i felt like i had been EMP’d last night, pc cpu overheated and died and playstation stopped working. At the time i laughed, network error, as i was playing single player game but then it kicked me out. I hope my data isnt gone, i did notice that the trophies for what ever game you try to play seem to disappear but the data is still on the hard drive itself cause i checked. so it must just be the system saying the data isnt there but fingers crossed to those who have lost data that the data will come back, seems to me that its just the registry file that tells the playstation the data is there has failed to load.
Anyways lets hope ps3 fix this before 12 cause if this just fixes itself al be super pissed.

Alright…. We all know there’s a problem and it should have been fixed yesterday….
But Stop Wining About Trophies Being Lost !!!
Trophies are synced with the server, so when this is fixed and you can sign in properly, you can synchronize with the server and the trophies will be set back.
Only trophies achieved during the error ‘could’ be lost, but not for shure.
Is easier said then done, I know, but just turn off youre system and wait for a fix or solution from Sony.
Stay Kool…

Dear Sony.
Didn’t you notice, that only games with trophy support and downloaded content was affected? I can play all my games that do not support that childish trophy thing, but I would like to play a game, that made me to invest in Sony machine in first place – Heavy Rain. I took day off today from work only to finish the game. It’s around 120 EUR that I will not earn – I would not mind, if I could spend that time the way I planned it. Because of the “bug” that your engineers have not a single clue why happened – you owe me that 120 EUR.
Other thing is that I bought a console on day of release – I paid for it 535 EUR. If I can not play my games with it – you will have a VERY unhappy customer here, who will advise all the friends around to stay away from Sony products.
And I was going to buy a Bravia this weekend

This “fix” is all well and good, but what is sony going to provide me for the lost hours and game saves, are they going to pay me per hour that ive “worked” achieving all this, technically speaking if this was an MMORPG (I.e. Worl fo Warcraft) you can sell your hours but all property remains to the game maker, so therefore i may bill sony for loss of items/per hours played. I think theres a few freebies in the wings here folks.

the problem lies with the update so with common scence, you would think they had the tech to step back the update to a previous and then fix the problem, but am i talking ka ka because it seems we all are in the same boat without the proverbial paddle.
And we just spend more money and time to get nothing back, you would think with the size of sony the would have a simular fix like the y2k bug fix to use on the bios system with a pc llllol….
________________________________________________________ __________
If they role back the updates then that will affect the slim users as this is why the last big update came!
Its the same old adage to in that we are all “old” customers, they don’t care about us (This is not just sony)! they like many company’s are only interested in “NEW” customers because they don’t have their money already.
im a bit narked that i cant play some games, Fifa 10 for instance, i don’t remember seeing a label on the game when i bought it saying that this game is only available to play if you can connect to the PSN!

Maybe Sony should spend less time fiddling with the OS to free up 70megs of RAM and more time on making sure that the console actually works…

@ the guy who says don’t whine about trophies.
I must have got about 15 trophies yesterday and a few of those were gold and they had not been synced and don’t even try and say “you should have synced them” because I played until fairly late last night and turned my ps3 off to go to bed, nothing wrong with doing that and it is not my fault in any way that this has happened and my trophies were not synced after my last play session.

@ Borzol_gro-Olog yeh i have had the same problem as you, it was coming up with error code 80010514 – (cant read disc) aka code of death apparently. it said that for about 10 minute then it stared to come up with this error to do with the time. so im hoping the code of death is gone when the time issue is sorted.

Lets hope that they can’t resolve this issue because if they solve it we will all be expected to accept whatever happens and Sony will get off easy. If they can’t get a fix we’ll all have a massive case against Sony.

yeh i think that sony should give us FAT ps3 owners some free downloads

Sony you are having a laugh?
If I were to provide a service like you are doing I would be out of business. Come on get your act together, do you really think telling your customers not to use there £350 console is the answer. Me thinks the Xbox 360 is winning the war and you have just given them more ammo. I would like to know who is getting sacked for this one.
Poor Very Poor.

i have very mixed feelings about all this. This is the first time i have had a problem with any playstation so I have some patience with Sony on this but on the other hand I do think i should be able to play offline without any problems. I am slighly concerned with the “lets wait til tomorrow and lets see if that sorts it” apporach. I hope its an easy fix when it comes!

I seem to remember a similar problem not so long ago when a firmware update fried the blu-ray chip meaning discs could not be read. I was left on that occasion having to replace my whole system. Why do we consumers fork out vast amounts of money on what is sold as brilliance in a box (and when it’s working it is) only to be fobbed off when things go wrong. And it appears that when it does go wrong, the fat cats at sony are only happy to sit back and keep their fingers crossed and hope it sorts itself, or that we just shell out more money on new systems. I for one am seriously considering getting rid altogether and moving to xbox.

So this “PSN error” wasn’t isolated to just the PSN. And my PS3 crashed and died, yellow light and everything. What am I supposed to expect from sony, I cant afford another console I’m hoping there’s going to be some sort of reimbursement for me and people in my situation. Of all the tech that’s incorporated in next gen consoles it’s the clock that ruins everything.

i think the same , hoping it fixes itself after midnight , how can a company as large as sony make sure a stupid mistake, its due to something to do with leap year as it messed up midnight 28th Feb, HELLO, its not a leap year , i had taken the day of work , to have a long weekend to chill out and play heavy rain OR ff8 ,(which i bought the other day , and why do we get ff8 7months after it was released in us/japan.
Sony really need to sort this out it not acceptable , so thats a days holidAY WASTED
and one last thing, sony a lot of your business is from EU, maybe pay us a little more attention, thats got nothing to do with the 8001050 nonsense but might as well have a moan , seems the best time to,
U HAVE BEEN SIGNED OUT OF THE PSN NETWORK , its just a clock and date , please get it right next time

Sorry Sony but its time I had my say
After waiting for an update all day I am cheesed off that this problem wasn’t solved within an hour or 2, I am especially pissed off that people with Playstation Slims are getting away with it.
I would also like to say that my friend who owns a Phat PS3 is still online with no connection errors at all, i dont understand what is going on!
A stupid clock error should not affect PSN services/Trophies etc. My mate who got Modern Warfare 2 on Saturday and had completed the game and now has to go through it again as he has lost his trophies and his save data.
Luckily i havent had any formatted data or lost any trophies (YET) but i’m still annoyed that this has happened, it should have been tested before it happened as now Sony are pretty much in deep water.
I also hope that we are not going to get shunned if you cant fix the problem, i demand that you sort something out so that we can have our ‘Phat’ PS3′s recalled and replaced with slims, this seems to be a fair option
Good luck fixing it Sony

I have a few questions here if the official don’t mind answering please.
By 24 hours, when is the 24 hours starting from? GMT?
Some people may not have been paying any attention to this website or from any other source, how would you advice those people who are currently online with an unaffected FAT PS3? Turn it off or keep it on till the next day?
Please if Sony official have 5 minutes to answer the above questions, include them in your next update post.
Thanks

If it is true that you are merely waiting until 24 hours (and therefore the next calendar day) to see if the issue resolves itself, then it is absolutely unacceptable. You should be working through the night at full capacity fixing the issue.

thank god i pay £4.99 a month for insurance, but those that dont pay will still have a case as its sony fault they have admitted it is, so if it does all go t*ts up they need to give ps3 slims to all affected fat ps3′s, but sony wont want to do this as it will cost a fortune and be a nightmare for them publicly..what i am so angry about is i don’t care about bloody trophies so why on earth cant i play my games offline??? i bought an xbox 360 the other day becuase i wanted to play L4D2 but i refused to buy the wifi for it, so i play all the games offline, why on earth cant the ps3 do this??? its baffling..

Sony for some reason i think that you knew this was going to happen but if you didnt then i think it should be fixed by tommorow but even if we cannot get online to play with all of our friends we should at least be able to play the disc itself offline! Sony keep working hard and try to have this BIG problem fixed by tommorow.
Thank you
