By now you may have seen the update on our new PlayStation 3 motion controller, via our live video stream at GDC. In case you missed it, let me introduce you to ‘PlayStation Move’.
We first showed the ‘Move’ controller prototype at E3 in 2009 and we’re now ready with the final design, along with an early look at just a few of the upcoming games…
Take a look at our trailer below, which aims to explain PlayStation Move in more detail:
Our launch games are designed to appeal to all PlayStation 3 fans. We’ve got our own take on social games such as ‘Sports Champions’ and ‘Move Party’ (both working titles) as well as keeping our more serious gamers in mind with DUKES and EA’s Tiger Woods 2010. Many of our existing franchises such as SOCOM will also be enhanced with PlayStation Move functionality – because of Move’s low performance impact on the PS3 system we’re able to add this to our existing games without compromising graphical quality or gameplay. The PlayStation Move experience will offer our players a fun, high definition and immersive gaming experience.
As you know, we’ve got a lot of experience working with motion and camera-based control systems, having created the original EyeToy for PlayStation 2 back in 2003. This experience has really helped make sure our new control system is incredibly accurate and responsive. PlayStation development teams are working hard to create a strong and exciting line-up of games – you’ll be hearing more about new titles in the coming months but for now, here is a list of the games we’ve announced so far:
- Dukes — Brawl your way to the top in this brutal bare-knuckle boxing game.
- Move Party — Chaotic multiplayer where you never know what will happen next!
- Sports Champions — The greatest athletes in the world are ready, are you?
- TV Superstars — Be a contestant in five TV game shows to prove that you are the biggest star.
- Slider — Kung-fu action – on an office chair!?!
- The Shoot — Take out the bad guys but make sure the movie director likes your style!
More news both from first and third party publishers to follow in the near future…
You will be able to get involved with PlayStation Move in several ways:
- Camera + controller (including a “starter disc” with a range of demos for games releasing later in the year)
- A single controller for people who already have a PlayStation Eye camera
- A full console pack which includes PS3, dualshock3, Move controller + camera
- Finally some of our biggest games will be available with a Move controller included
We’ve also announced the Subcontroller this week, an additional peripheral for use with more hardcore titles like SOCOM, which benefit from analogue stick input.
Move is one of our big priorities for PlayStation 3 in Europe this year so look out for our ads and product updates.
I look forward to hearing your feedback and responses to the announcement of PlayStation Move in America this week. Watch out for interviews with Move developers from GDC here on PlayStation.Blog.
Start moving and being at the centre of the action and start a new way to play on PlayStation 3 in 2010…

Slider seems to be made by the people who made PAIN. The shoot seems awesome but slightly dodgey as it has the old batman music, b ut i love that track. Dukes looks sick. So in Australian money the bundle with the game would end up costing us maybe $150 AUD. This looks like a good year for PS3, but i also have a 360, so whoudl i also get NATAL?

umm can you say l.a.w.s.u.i.t its identicial to the wii change the color add a few buttons gotta say ive always been a playstation fan but the design team dropped the ball here or just got lazy they could of had something new rather then a 4 year old idea that nintendo had just sad really

Which developer is responsible for Slider? :p
Reminds me of Incredible Crisis for PSone.

Destructoid writes: “a person swinging his fists — both loaded with a Move controller”. I guess that means you have to buy two controllers to play certain games?
And what about the subcontroller is it included or do we have to pay some extra cash?

I’m sure it works and works well, but there’s no way in hell I’ll ever spend money on that ugly a** webcam (was its design sponsored by Braun or Philips electric razors?), let alone place it anywhere in plain view.

From the look of the games that are coming with this peripheral I am sure I will give it a miss. If I wanted to play these type of games I would already have bought a Wii (if the controller isn’t extremely cheap you may as well just buy a Wii).
Basically, it looks like a toy for a different market, PS is more about cool games, not novelty ones.
Also: DO NOT ADD A TOUCH SCREEN TO THE PSP2!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It looks like Sony is using Nintendo as a blueprint for design now, we like decent games, not clones of wiimote waving kids games or stylus based maths puzzles

Hi ninja_tom – We have only shown a few titles so far and you’ll see a lot more from us throughout the year. We have definately got our PS3 fanboys in mind with this tech and have many games in development which I think you’ll be up for.. novelty is good for some of our gamers but impressive tech and our big name games are what many people also want to see… stay online for more news

One thing I must know: Does it Vibrate/Shock?
If it doesn’t it’s a lot less appealing, also my vote is in to name this controller the EyeMove (Playstation Eye + Move = EyeMove …-> I Move)

Yes, of course it does my friend…

nice HD nintendo controller/nunchuck CLONE.
the price of this will be essential. if the hardware will be too expensive – the “playstation move” wont take off!
will it be playable at the gamescom, cologne?

- A full console pack which includes PS3, dualshock3, Move controller + camera
Now that made me go “Awesome!”. I was worried you wouldn’t be bunling it which would leave a lot of people on the street on this one. Looking forward to how well it’s implemented in the sport games, I also like the idea of some realistic boxing with “Move”. Keep it going!
Note: Yes, of course it reminds of Wii but I don’t really have a problem with that. Good luck on competing with Natal

The European commercial linked here seems to take a slightly different approach than the US intro shown at the press conference. The latter was a blatant rip-off of Wii commercials, down to exactly the same people playing, same atmosphere same games (but in HD).
They even started the press conference boldly claiming to go head-to-head against Nintendo. I think these are huge marketing mistakes and Sony risks alienating their core audience while failing to capture market share from the competition. I seriously doubt a significant number of Wii households will be upgrading to PS3 just because of Move – it adds $100 to the already much higher price and Sony marketing will have a hell of a time to convince that PS3 is worth the price difference.
Hopefully we’ll get more hardcore content than just Socom 4, otherwise it’ll indeed be a WiiHD.

I think Sony is doing a great job so far with Move. I really like the name and the way the controller looks. It might look weird at first but I got a feeling it will a lot more ergonomic than the Wii remote. The only thing I don’t like is the Move logo. It just looks out of place with the rest of the controller. I really hope they change it.
That said, I was quite impressed by the range of games they demo’d at the GDC conference, except for Move Party which just isn’t for me. I was also very pleased to see Move implemented into a hardcore franchise like SOCOM. I’d love to play Dead Space 2 with Move and hope more developers utilise the controller for their games to give people the option to choose between the Dualshock 3 and Move if it’s as easy as they say it was for SOCOM 4.
Anyway, can’t wait for more info!

Hmmmm $100 or ~£70 dont think I will bother, that money is best spent on games, what user base penetration are Sony hoping for?
66
Posted on 11 March, 2010 at 9:06 am by almighty-slayer
@Stormy
That’s £70 with ONE controller (apparently). You’ll still need to buy another to play some games properly. Also, no news on whether than £70 includes the Nunchuck…Wait, i mean “Playstation Move Subcontroller.”
67
Posted on 11 March, 2010 at 9:10 am by Lucreto
Will the controller pack contain 2 controllers or just the one?
68
Posted on 11 March, 2010 at 9:16 am by CloudStorm87
@ stormyuk, almighty-slayer:
I am pretty sure they will include the “subcontroller” with the main controller. I think they both mean the same thing, i.e. Move, and it would make no sense to sell them separately.
And don’t forget, the starter kit also comes with a game. If it’s SOCOM 4, then I’m down for it. I already own a PS Eye so I only need the controller but I think £60-70 will be a great pricepoint if included with a great game.
69
Posted on 11 March, 2010 at 9:27 am by Liamario
Quick question Mark. Will the sub controller be bundled with the Move?
70
Posted on 11 March, 2010 at 9:40 am by AKGermany
How dependent is Move on lighting conditions?
I play with a projector setup, so it usually needs to be quite dark which means I can’t play Eyepet or Eye of Judgment the way I play my other games.
Theoretically the glowing ball on top of the motion controller could help a lot there, but I’m not sure if it’ll work for me.

Posted on 11 March, 2010 at 9:44 am by eatstatic
I’ve just watched all the demo videos over on GameTrailers, and all the enthusiasm I had for this just drained away. It certainly didn’t look as responsive as it did at the E3 demo, and like someone mentioned earlier, during SOCOM the cursor is shaking all over, which does not bode well. It looks like any game that uses this controller system will be far better when played with a standard DualShock!!

Just one question … What it means when there is this line at the top of the news article?
“Countries: AE, AU, GB, IE, NZ”
Will it be that this thingy will only be available on small subset of SCEE market area? (like PlayTV, Rentals… )

However eveything else looks good, cant wait to get my hands on it!

the playstation MOVE looks great! love the design and all but i am a bit worried how much support it will get from the developers, seeing the wii has conqured this part of the market and with the playstation MOVE beeing released somewhere in the middle of the console lifecycle.
The bundles are already known and it will be nice, but the important thing is that there will be a constant stream of MOVE compatible games.

To me it reads in the post that the ‘subcontroller’ is extra so you have to spend ~£70 and then extra on the ‘subcontrolle’

@ Mark Hardy – I have a few of quick questions about Move if you don’t mind taking a moment to answer…
1) The sub-controller is basically the left side of the the DS3 in a nicer package. So with that in mind do users still have the option of holding the DS3 in their left hand – as shown on the TGS Resi 5 stage demo – if they didn’t wish to get a sub-controller straight away?
2) A lot of games shown seem dependent on using 2 controllers (which IMO is one of the best aspects of the system) yet when you say the starter pack comes with a ‘Move controller’ does that mean one controller or two? Is there an option to play these games with one controller if you only own one?
3) Does the Move controller have vibration feedback, it wasn’t mentioned during the conference? Also does the sub-controller have the basic SIXAXIS sensors built into it?
Continued…
Posted on 11 March, 2010 at 11:42 am by Mark Hardy
Hi Apnomis – OK, to answer your questions:
1. Yes, you can still use the DS3 controller if you dont want to use the sub-controller. We designed the sub to be easier to hold and more in keeping with the MOVE experience – its your choice which you go with…
2.There will be options to play with 1 or 2 controllers – some games richer with 2, others you could use the DS3 as the secondary controller too (*i.e Dukes). We will package and sell all MOVE componants in different ways to give our gamers maximum options
3. Yes, the MOVE controller does have rumble.
79
Posted on 11 March, 2010 at 10:05 am by Apnomis
…Part 2
4) LBP was shown with a guy using a DS3 and a friend controlling the moveable blocks, but is it safe to assume there is an option to use the Move controller and sub-controller to cotrol both the Sackboy and the Blocks so a single player can control both elements of the level?
5) Last one, how do you personally think the Move option of controlling an FPS compares to the traditional PC mouse & keyboard method? A lot of PC gamers say a console controller isn’t accurate enough or quick enough to play an FPS, yet watching the guy play SOCOM made me think the scheme was a bit more PC like – using the light sensor to control the camera (rather than a Wii style pointer on screen) and the possibility of very quick/large movements using the 1:1 mapping…
Posted on 11 March, 2010 at 11:46 am by Mark Hardy
More questions!
(Im supposed to be working here you know…)
4. The LBP demo was there to show you the potential of gaming on MOVE – we are working on way-more functionality than this. Its early days, GDC is a ‘dev conference’ rather than a ‘consumer show’ so we just wanted to make sure you guys got the freshest news possible. Keep your eye out for more news as we release it.
5 Its not about what I think Apnomis – make sure you get the chance over the coming months to try this for yourself and let us know what you think. Its about a new way to play and there will be differing opinions on this point Im sure – especially here on the blog…

What’s really annoying me is that you will need a Playstation Eye, TWO Move controllers and a Subcontroller to play all the motion games.
What happens when a parent buys the Eye and a Move controller to find out a game requires TWO Move controllers? When then happens when they have these and the next game requires a Subcontroller?
So if we want to play two player boxing we need to buy FOUR Move controllers?
I want to be positive about it, but I just cant see this working out. There are too many controller options and configurations for the average person on the street nevermind the actual cost of all this extra hardware.
Posted on 11 March, 2010 at 11:54 am by Mark Hardy
OK – lets clear this one up so you know the score…
- All MOVE games will be playable with 1 controller. You can also use your DS3 at the same time to enhance this. There will be modes for 2 controllers as well – our games will work in different ways depending on what kit our players own/want to own.
- You need the camera to make the experience work – without it, there is no video feed and as such no precision, no augmented reality and no voice activation…
- The sub-controller is a bonus extra – more precise and easier to use. However, if you dont feel the need to buy this for those reasons, your DS3 can be used to compliment the gaming experience. We will not be forcing you to buy this to get involved with our games
The core MOVE experience will be easy to use, easy to get involved in. One controller will get you started and we will sell this in a number of packs depending on if you already have a PlayStation Eye or not.
Hope that helps to clarify… Cheers Mark

No way to add the analogue stick to the ‘Move’? Even just a PSP-like analogue stick where the black button is in the middle of the XOVO?
Right now its looking like Im going to have to buy an eye, two ‘Moves’ and the sub controller when this comes out. Help us out here.

The guy in the video said something about getting the controller+ PS EYE+ game for under 100 bucks. But from what i’ve seen in the video a second controller is needed to play most games plus a subcontroller (if you want to play games like socom 4). So I guess the price for the full experience will be at least 150+… or does the bundle include two controllers?
84
Posted on 11 March, 2010 at 10:16 am by Apnomis
P.S. If the Move controller does give a more ‘PC like’ FPS experience then that is how you market this to the ‘hardcore’ market…
Looking at the buttons on the Move + the Sub you have all the buttons you need to transfer any DS3 control scheme to the Move with the light sensor replacing the right stick. For that reason you should put pressure on FPS game devs, even multiplatform ones, to had a Move control scheme option as standard – especially if it’s as easy and low-overhead as the SOCOM devs made it out to be…

Personally the one thing that convinced me about the PS Move was the Socom demo. Shooters, real-time stratey and action games are my favourites so I love the versatility this seems to offer. I actually think this could be a better way of playing than using the venerable dualshock.
The only thing that really worries me is Sony’s horrendous habit of over-pricing in the UK & Europe. It may be too much to take for many customers which will hurt adoption of the PS Move.

I really like what’s been shown of the PlayStation Move, so far!
I hope you will work to get the starter experience in to as many hands as possible (via the PlayStation Store, being one of the ways)?
I read that it is much lighter than competing motion controllers (I found the Wii Remote to be bulky, and the Move controller looks like it has a far sleeker, more comfortable to hold form), which is good, and hopefully, it won’t be too long before it will be available. Good job, so far.

Why doesn’t the Subcontroller have a light ball like the Move controller?
Or should i ask, why doesn’t the Move controller have an analog stick?
This way, we’ll need to buy two Moves, for games that require that, plus the Subcontroller!

Posted on 11 March, 2010 at 10:40 am by PirateThom
Got to admit, I’m not sold on the idea.
SOCOM 4 looks alright, but that’s due to the pointer, not the motion. I’d still rather play with a controller….
That said, I doubt Sony are marketing Move towards me, anyway. I own a Wii, but never really cared much for it. I own a PS Eye, but for the camera rather than the games.
Don’t get me wrong though, I am impressed at how responsive it is, but none of these games are a reason to buy one and any big games are going to support DS3 (no way you’re going to cut out that many users).

Hmmm must say this is a bit disappointing to be honest.
Video capture and more accurate tracking won’t be enough to attract new consumers away from the Wiis we have already grown bored of.
The EyeToy was a fun video capture novelty (that had it’s time) and the Wii MotionPlus has shown that most people don’t care enough about more accurate tracking.
Move Party and Sports Champions seems too analogous to Wii Play and Wii Sports?!
I need more innovation to invest in this than Natal

Looks alright. I’m not big on motion controllers (and the Wii had very little convince me otherwise) but at least the games here look better even just graphically and nothing too overly cute like Nintendo’s stuff. A couple of the games have interested me and I’ll keep an eye on them to see how they turn out.

i have 2 questions.
1. i heard instead of the sub controller you can just use the dualshock along with the move controller , is this true?
2.I saw alot of games using two Move controllers, since alot of them use this are there no plans for selling a pack of two move controllers with a lower cost than 2 single packs?
I think the starter disc is a decent idea but you can just put a PSN code with the Move controllers so we can download the demo’s this way. or just put them on the psn period.
just my ideas.

In my opinion it would have been better if the subcontroller would be an move controller with an anlog stick because if you want to play the motion fighters style game and a 3d shooter you need 2 move’s and one subcontroller.
One questions: Will the move and the subcontroller have rumble and a mic?

Thanks for the response to post #80 Mark, that helps clear things up a bit.
It would have been good if Sony explained this last night. The problem during the conference was they told us all about their planned bundles which all contained one controller. They then went straight to demo’s where the majority of them featured two controllers.
I’m not quite sure how the fighting games they demo’d are going to work with just one Move controller but I’ll keep an eye out for further news and details and see what their solution is. Cheers.
