The big day is finally here. As Yakuza 3 begins the journey to stores across the west, we take another look at what makes Yakuza 3 something you’ll find only on the PS3. For this blog, I’ve roped in my colleague Aaron from SEGA of America as he’s a huuuuuge Yakuza fan. So, over to Aaron.
“If there’s one thing about Yakuza that these last few months have taught people,” I thought as I sat at lunch on Monday, “It’s that the fans are a force to take seriously. …Usually.” Fans can be the biggest allies and proponents of games that may not be the huge, multi-million sellers like (insert generic FPS here), or (insert additional generic FPS here). They can create amazing successes for games that were never expected to have them – looking at you, Valkyria Chronicles – and they can just as easily do the opposite, in some cases.
But more than anything, most fans just want to be heard. Fans want interaction, and to be responded to. So let’s begin this blog post by jumping right in to one of the biggest things fans have been asking about: the content.
Yakuza 3 is huge. Besides exploring Tokyo and Okinawa, you can also visit restaurants, pick up ramen at a local convenience store, go golfing, bowling, fishing, karaoke, or bust some heads in a local street fight.
As someone who enjoyed Shenmue, my love for Yakuza grows in knowing that some of the people who developed the original Shenmue games also work on Yakuza now. The similarity in feel between the two is no coincidence – and the epic feel of exploration, and Japanese culture, that the game offers are things you won’t find anywhere else. I’m also a big fan of playing darts while drunk –- the extra level of difficulty is quite entertaining, besides being notably safer in Yakuza 3’s virtual world than it is in real life. (Note: I do not condone playing darts while intoxicated. You’ll probably take someone’s eye out.)
Also, we’d like to make special note that while not everything from the Japanese version made it to the western shores, that our community team has been -– and will be -– reading, compiling, and passing all of that feedback upwards here at SEGA. I can’t say more than that presently, but know that you are being heard, and we’ll make sure of that for you. To clarify additionally, as has been mentioned: Hostesses are in the game, and you can take them out on dates, build relationships, and sing Karaoke with them to your heart’s content.
As Yakuza goes out the door and into the homes of hundreds of thousands of fans, I’d also like to take a moment to give some thanks to the people that really deserve it –- and that’s you guys. It goes to the people who pushed from the beginning to show SEGA how much they wanted this game here. To those who post in the comments sections encouraging us, offering bright and helpful viewpoints even when the going got rough. And finally, to those who continue to support this PS3 exclusive by picking up the game, and in doing so give the franchise the legs on which to stand.
Know that we appreciate the support so many of you have already given to this series – and that we are now, and will continue to listen to your feedback.
That said – here’s to Yakuza 3!

I’m still annoyed by the removed content from the western version

I’ve got my copy waiting for me and I can’t wait to play it. I loved Yakuza and Yakuza 2. They truely capture that “Japanese movie” feel.
Good luck, guys. Really hope we get a chance at playing Yakuza 4. I don’t want Kazuma’s story to end here.

I got Yakuza 3 yesterday and so far, I’m in love. Great fun to play with a (so far) fantastic story. All of you buy it. Now. :O

I had this pre ordered until I heard about the cut content, then I cancelled my pre ordered and bought GoW3. I’ve played 1 and 2 and they are great games but removing content was stupid on Segas part.

is it true that few copies of Yakuza 3 were produced ? I’m currently away from home and hope I can find it an affordable price when I return back to my country.

I hope the pre-sell minigames DLC won’t take too long to be released..

@ SnoopDop: It’s around 60 € for the Normal Edition and around 65 € for the “Premium” Pack in France.

Give us a chance guys we may not be so gobsmacked by japanese culture as you think. In fact if you put more japanese culture in our media it becomes normal.
Seeing a hostess club in a game isnt going to cause me to bust a vein and drop dead (yes i know you said they are in there still), seeing somone eat onigiri isnt going to put my fist through my tv in a rage just like i dont get upset when im watching american shows and you see somthing like the NFL mentioned.
Not a rant aimed directly at you guys just the industry in general. No need to remove japanese culture from japanese games.
Oh and BTW seeing as its SEGA i’ll forgive most anything, but seeing as you and sammy are in bed together can you possible release the berserk game from the PS2 on the PSN or somthing? i dont know if you know but berserk has a big following in europe.

I finally got my hands on Yakuza 3! Finally! I said to myself from the beginning that I could accept the minor cuts that were made. At first it did annoy me, but I just wanted to play the game as I’ve been waiting forever for it……..Unfortunately though, minor cuts aside I was not expecting this….
http://kotaku.com/5491650/yakuza-3-players-say-a-lot-more- was-cut-than-hostess-bars
SEGA really…..I mean come on
Sorry but I’d rather you have waited and released a complete product (saying that you couldn’t because of time frames is a complete and utter lie) then release the game at all in this state. I’m returning the game this week, as are 3 of my mates. Yakuza 3 is an awesome game…..in its original form, but the way you have released it in the American, Australian & European territories is a disgrace and an insult to your loyal Western fans. We are not dumb people and we do NOT appreciate being told we wouldn’t “quite get & understand” the cut content.
14
Posted on 12 March, 2010 at 3:40 pm by Simmo44
What annoys me is that this was probably (purposefully) done to then release later as paid DLC…..haha no way is that happening, sorry SEGA you’ve just made your loyal fan base angry.
You know this really sucks. I was full of praise for you guys in one of the previous PS Blog posts. But alas, being deceitful about the cut content will get you absolutely no where.
I would love for an official reply to this matter. It’s absolutely everywhere on the official Yakuza forums. Also word gets around quick, people will more than likely not want to purchase the game now.

i also heard that one of the things that was removed was a mahjong minigame O.o is there anybody here who doesn’t know what mahjong is?

maybe make a free Japanese Culture DLC pack with all the stuff that was cut for free? it would be enough to make me buy it i guess..

We understand Japanese culture. Yes some of it may seem odd at times but we understand that other countries have different customs. Its by seeing these customs in film, TV and games that we learn, please don’t just cut stuff out because you think it won’t translate well.
Please remember that Europe is not America. If you must cut content due to worries about stores in the US not stocking your product due to ratings. Then please have the decency to release a version in Europe with the content intact. We are able to understand the artistic decision behind nudity in games, films and TV and we don’t then feel the need to call for things to be banned.

Thanks for finally bringing this game out in Europe Sega. Just wondering if this does well enough can we expect a faster turn around in the localization of Yakuza 4? Or even a release of Yakuza: Kenzan!?
I have played the Japanese version of Kenzan and I really like the game. Plus Yakuza 4 is hitting Japanese store next week and I would love to see that been released by Christmas.
Here’s a thought: When Sega is making the next Yakuza game, why can’t they have English subtitles added in from day one?, so that the hardcore fans of the series from the US and UK & Ireland can import it and play it??? Instead of waiting over a year for a localized version of it.

Sadly, according to kotaku even less of the game made it to our shores that was originally said (http://kotaku.com/5491650/yakuza-3-players-say-a-lot-more-was-cut-tha n-hostess-bars).
I won’t be buying until either the missing content is released as paid-for DLC (SEGA’d be fools to say no to free money, I know I’d pay for it), or the game’s price is reduced significantly in the shops.
This way I can make my small protest against the cuts, whilst still supporting the devs. Since the Regular Edition is the Premium Editon, I won’t be missing out on anything in the mean time.
Sure if more people like me do this, SEGA may never release Y4, but I won’t be blackmailed. Thanks for eventually releasing it though.

Been playing non stop. The Yakuza franchise is the best to come around since Metroid.
You naive fools need to stop complaining about what was removed from the game. It has no affect on the game at all.

Posted on 12 March, 2010 at 4:38 pm by Jebus2477
I think my biggest issue is not that they cut content, it’s that they feel westerners won’t get cultural references and remove certain mini games and missions but then leave in stuff that westerners wouldn’t get… LIKE HANAFUDA! How do you remove Mahjong and Shogi but manage to leave Koi-Koi in? You can’t complain that you want to make the game more accessible to the western audience by removing content that is “foreign” and leaving in other content as equally as foreign.
I also feel like the job to remove content was lapsidazical. The dates for example, if you wanted to remove the hostess clubs why don’t you remove the heart meters since they obviously have no real effect, and remove the stores that sell gifts for the hostess girls. How is it I walked into a store in Okinawa and they were selling all kinds of rings that one would normally gift to the girls but if bought would have no purpose. Same with the pawn shop. They have an item in there that increases your attractiveness to women but in the end buying said item would be a waste of in game currency because the item is useless.

I’m going to have to agree with the other comments here.
Cutting content from a western release because we ‘wouldn’t get it’ is the most ridiculous explanation I have ever heard.
The majority of people who will buy Yakuza 3 are those that want to experience the Japanese culture…so cutting that from the game just gives us another generic brawler in a Japanese location.
Also I don’t think SEGA is in a position to claim they didnt have the time to localize the game, as it has been out in Japan for over a year now.
I will be buying the game however as I believe in the franchise, its just a shame that as always corporate ignorance gets in the way of what would have been a great product.

Posted on 12 March, 2010 at 4:59 pm by HazelAM
it’s just a shame that despite taking a year and not even doing any dubbing sega still felt it necessary to cut quite a bit of content out of the game for it’s western release, because they apparently didn’t have time.

@dazexus: I totally agree at this.
“Cutting content from a western release because we ‘wouldn’t get it’ is the most ridiculous explanation I have ever heard.”
“he majority of people who will buy Yakuza 3 are those that want to experience the Japanese culture…”

….Also re-reading the blog post again.
I think it will be utterly disgusting if SEGA is intentionally holding back this content, knowing full well there would be a reaction, then releasing the content as paid DLC ‘because we begged for it’
I pray they dont try to take the [DELETED] by selling us content we have essentially already paid for.

Posted on 12 March, 2010 at 5:45 pm by TailsTheCat
Japanese anything is better in its original language, no dubs. Are people too lazy to read? Yes. The subtitles take nothing away from the experience.

“Know that we appreciate the support so many of you have already given to this series”.
The way Sega managed the western versions would have made me think otherwise…

2 bad sega sucks at making games cause like bayonetta this game is more incomplete than sega would like you 2 believe it’s missing a number off side0missions check yakuza forum for a list off more missing stuff it’s like 70 procent complete they destroyed this game just like they did bayonetta
31
Posted on 12 March, 2010 at 6:32 pm by TheAlp
@TailsTheCat
i like that theres Japanese voices, and i don’t mind that i have to read subtitles, i hate when stuff is translated in TV so i like this, wont make up for the missing stuff..

Well it’s a good and a bad news at the same time…
I’m so happy to be able to play Y3 in english but the cuts… really?
And the localisation time argument is a little weak!
So not for me except if you use the time you have now to add the missing parts by a DLC (and not a 12€ one i hope)!

If you buy 8 brand new games it costs you +/-€560 that is equivalent to a brand new LCD HDTV.

The removed content did annoy me greatly. When i heard the game was coming out in the west i was overjoyed, i played the japanese demo back along and i really loved it.
I also loved the first one (never played the 2nd).
That extra content would be great Sega, you know what you have to do.

Actually the lack of time is a really good excuse for the cut content. The people who say “it doesn’t” clearly understand nothing about software development process. There are many times when even obvious bugs are left in to the game/software just because fixing them would cost too much. However this doesn’t remove the fact that they where unable to bring full Yakuza 3 experience or the funding of the project was not enough.
But if “content was cut because western audiences don’t get it”. Do western gamers cut out important features from games because Japanese people don’t get them? No. Like every country, Japan should be proud of their cultural differences not shut themselves in to a cellar because they are afraid foreigners might not like the way they do things or think.
Besides Yakuzas core fans are mainly fans of Japanese culture so they might actually understand far more than one might think.
So I hope Sega (AND EVERY OTHER COMPANY) at least learns a lesson or 2 from this.
still getting the game tough, I hope the free pre-order goodies will somehow “cover” at least some value of the cut content that was cut.

most of you guys above me are all retarded hypocrits youve been whining to sega for years for them to bring this out in the west and now they have your whining because they have removed 9 side missions from ONE chapter seriously guys sega is taking a pretty signifigant risk bringing it out here.
i wll be buying this when i get the money im broke at the moment and god of war is out next week then theres heavy rain still need get the sabatuer too damn my wallet whimpers every time games like these are released

@ Damielmccue
It’ partially SEGA’s fault that you can’t buy the game right now.
They did not plan this out. Ryu Ga Gotoku 3(japanese yakuza3) has been out for ages. SEGA rushed this localisation the last minute and removed content to boot.
Then they release it the same week Freaking Final fantasy XIII is out.
Next thing you know, they will blame their fans for not supporting Yakuza 3 when they deny blatantly lying to their core audience about cut content in the first place.

Well, I’m another person who was going to buy Yakuza 3 but I’m not interested in a cropped and “edited” version. I was pretty peeved to hear the mah-jong games have gone too apparently? I just want this on the record: I LOVE mah-jong. Why cut that? If indeed it was?
Ah, makes no difference to me, I won’t be getting it unless the cut bits make it back in a patch. Otherwise I’d always have that feeling that I am missing something while playng it.
Please also tell Sega that there are no excuses for the PS3 Bayonetta looking so washed out and inferior. We PS3 owners know what it is capable of (see: God of War 3, Uncharted 2, Final Fantasy XIII, etc).
Always been a big Sega fan since I got the Mastersystem back in the day… but I’m not going to spend £40 on an ill-advisedly edited game!

Sorry but cut content is a big no no in my book, the cultural interest was the biggest draw for me, the cuts being heard in the media completely turned me off.

You’re welcome for the support (I should get my hands on the game by tomorrow) and I, in turn, sincerely thank you for trusting the fanbase enough to bring this game to the west for all us Japanophiles to enjoy!
However, should Yakuza 4 some day see daylight outside Japan, make sure it is left unedited. Cutting content out of Yakuza 3 was an incredibly stupid move and if the next game would suffer the same fate, you might as well keep it – won’t support this kind of foolishness twice.
49
Posted on 14 March, 2010 at 4:02 pm by Shuya86
I Bought this upon launch day to support the series (as I did Valkyria Chronicles) fantastic game as the previous two are but the ridiculous cuts really have a noticeably negative impact on the enjoyment of this.
Mahjong and shogi parlors can still be walked into yet you can’t play in them due to the cuts?
Items can be bought from shops like Le marche (very expensive ones at that) yet the items have no use anymore thanks to the cuts.
People will still say things like “Here take this and go to your hostess club. It’s the least I can do for your trouble.” despite the fact that you can’t as they too have been cut!
That would be bad enough but then there is 22 quests missing from the western version as well …
Honestly Sega this is unacceptable it’s 2010 hacking away at things at localization to make it more “western” should be a thing of the past even the previous 2 Yakuza games made it here without that happening so why now?
Help us help you, please bring back what was lost! Put the missing content on PSN for us to download, surely if you can throw money away at rubbish like Iron man you can afford to at least finish the job on subtitling this (one of your best game series since Shenmue …)
