PS3 Firmware 3.21 will be available this Thursday. It will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, we’re now removing this feature.
For most of you, this won’t have any impact on how you use your PS3. If you are one of the few who use the “Other OS” feature, or if you belong to an organisation that does, then you can choose not to upgrade your system. However, doing so will mean that the following features will not be available:
- Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat.
- Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later.
- Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings).
- Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later.
If you currently use the “Other OS” feature and you wish to update to system software 3.21, make sure you back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

Why does it feel so much like “Sony vs Consumers” this generation?
It’s almost like you hate us for buying your product.
I mean, what’s next? Disabling PS2 backwards compatibility in 60Gb
models? The day that happens is the day I buy a 360 and never look
back.
Honey works better than vinegar you know…

“readback+verify ”
this would slow down memory access, making games run slower etc.
the readback/verify will have to take on hw (new RAM)
“don’t allow untrusted code to specify the location for the mapping tables in new contexts”
the thing is…hypervisor is already patchable, there is no need to update to 3.21+ everything can be reversed from 3.15
those who modified their ps3s to apply the exploit wont upate as there are still multiple ways around to be online with older fw’s

Never used the function,I think since launch I know one person who tried it.Sucks if you use the function,but if its a security issue then Sony hace every right to change functions and other stuff.It’s all in the T&C.

No I am not worried about that side of things but the PS3 is getting boring especially the PSN in the EU region its about time Sony stop all this LOCALISATION crap and let us all have the same DLC and Ps 1 classics that the US have..

“If you currently use the “Other OS” feature and you wish to update to system software 3.21, make sure you back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.”
This had better mean the partition table will be destroyed/restructured, rather than that the OtherOS part will be removed.
Of course – not that you would actually know anyway, right? You just know that “most people” don’t care/know about the feature, and want cross game chat.

Other than that – just wanted to point out I’m not going to buy another Sony first party game ever again. The ignorance of the community managers, the systematic way the games are patched apart after launch – it’s just not creating very good games. Very strange – when I actually was in a beta-test, I got to see for myself how anyone with a reasonably structured argument was ignored in favour of.. noise. I suspected this was what happened, but then I got to see it first hand.
And it explained a lot. About how things work. Naturally, the next time another product is unprofitable because it ended up being “adjusted” to unplayable junk during the final stages – the community managers and echo-chamber furniture will be without responsibility. And another studio will disappear, because the game does not sell.
Which, by then, will be because changes to the game was not done quickly enough. Or so they will say.

Seriously, “Sony”. Have to stop listening to your focus-groups now. Or at least try to be aware of who the focus-groups actually represent. ..Not to mention that you can’t combine a “competitive and ground-breaking product” with a weak mass-appeal message.
See, there’s a contradiction there. You need to sell the features, and what makes the product unique.
Of course, why am I even bothering.. And now the SPU programming and quick testing will be gone soon as well, if I want to connect to the psn. Great job, Sony. Really appreciate it..

Como usuario de PS3, y Otheros, reclamo mi derecho a seguir utilizandolo, ya que fue una publicidad en su dia para fomentar las ventas, y ahora nos privan de dicha posibilidad.
NO I will update the firmware 3.21

@53
ok fair enough, I dont know enough about internal implementation to know whether the checks could be done only when running otherOS. And i’m not sure how often game code would be setting up and tearing down contexts in the first place. It’s generally a bad idea for games to even malloc()/new in performance critical code .. if they’re modifying mmu mappings at runtime (other than maybe loading) the I honestly don’t know what to say.
And sure the hackers are already in, and that fix won’t stop them, fine. Is that really a good enough reason to punish the rest of us who just want to use the device, in the manner in which it was advertised at the time of purchase?
For everyone who doesn’t care because ‘not many people use it anyway’ .. Lets just hope next time its not a feature you DO use that gets stripped because sony don’t feel like supporting it or working to keep it secure anymore. The slope is slippery indeed.
Anyway, whatevs – I’ve said my bit.

yeah i had it. got two ps3s, im trading them in for xbox.
i had it. sure, some rly great games. but this nightmare isnt going away.
was just getting ready to play the gta episodes, now theyre delayed by SCEE and we get a downgrade instead,.
i just thought the ps3 had a rough start, but now i see this stuff isnt going away.

already forgot that Sony advertised the ps3 with linux support heh
do we take that as false advertising? thats not legal
praising a feature they remove “instantly”? – yay

What’s going to happen to the people that spend 3000 EUROS on software like CODECSYS that uses other Os features? This is an irresponsible move.

Nice job, Sony, you bastards. I expect a full refund, as this was the main reason I bought a PS3 over an Xbox. Geohot’s exploit was nothing, it wasn’t even usable yet. You’re going to receive a huge backlash from this, especially from hackers.
67
Posted on 29 March, 2010 at 3:43 am by unmemorable
I bought my PS3 for two purposes – game play and access to the OtherOS feature (to learn how to develop for the Cell processor). Now you are forcing me to choose one or the other?
Removing advertised functionality from a product is really highly inappropriate and may even breach consumer rights. I have submitted an inquiry to the New Zealand Ministry of Consumer Affairs asking about how such situations are handled under New Zealand legislation.

I expect this comment thread will be closed what with the predictable community backlash.
This particular removal won’t affect me, but its the principal that they will happily work on firmware updates for this useless downgrade but not bother to put the effort into all the things we have cried for, for ages!
Incredibly disappointed.
If I lose my PS2 backward compatibility next, I’ll be walking away from Sony, and never looking back.

To all the people complaining about losing the other OS option…what are you using to post your comments here? I’m betting not linux on your PS3. Its a games console.
But i do agree they should have put more in the update like….cross gamez chattings for the kids!!!111!!11!!!!

After reading the above posts I expect the following two possible outcomes:
1) Community Backlash results in hackers fighting back by speeding up dev on a Custom Patched Firmware (just to spite sony)
2) a class action lawsuit
Good Luck Sony. This wasn’t the right move, you’ve just created a PR nightmare, and mass awareness of your security issue.
Meh, back to my gaming… Also, can’t believe Xbox got Early Exclusive for COD MW2 MapPack.. [DELETED]!!!

second, maybe u r like 8 or 10. cos if u were an adult u would know that this sorta thing is illegal. when u pay for a product the company just cant take away its funcunality.

Damn [DELETED]??? even I didnt think Sony was this stupid, unless this update adds ps2 backwards compatibility or something equally huge then a HUGE amount of users are gunna stop updating (which means sony loses money both in lost game sales and PSN content sales).
Some awesome logic there (regardless of the looming “threat” of a hack)

Congratulations in becoming the new Microsoft.
What are you going to do when the next competitor’s console comes with a full fledged multi purpose O.S.? Buy Internet Explorer version 4 for us?, implement Askjeeves.com in the XMB? Release additional Dynamic Themes? add MySpace support? sell us boobies pics at 4.99 each?
Oh, I get it, you will release Guitar hero songs and Java shovelware.
It just blows my mind, this isn’t exactly illegal or even paralegal but just plain disrespectful and thoughtless.

Posted on 29 March, 2010 at 5:20 am by themapleboy
this better be an april fools day joke
how many people have a ps3 that can install other os?
how many of them know about the feature?
how many of them use it?
how many of them know about the hack?
how many of them would use the hack?
that’s less than 1% of ps3 owners i say
if this is true i will no longer purchase another sony product. what’s next they take channel 3 from my TV because it allows me to use a pvr.
oh and what happens if i choose not to update but later must send in my ps3 for repair will you return it with the same firmware installed?
i paid full price for my launch ps3 and up until now was not disappointed perhaps you should offer a full refund option.

We must report this to the Consumer Agency.
* Misleading or aggressive marketing
* False advertising identification
* Unfair terms in standard
* Incorrect price
* Dangerous products
* False information after the purchase

FW updates are usually Tuesday aren’t they? I’m calling BS on this one.
I haven’t installed Linux on my 80GB yet, only because I don’t have a keyboard/mouse for it yet. I don’t like the idea of kissing away 10GB because 1% of users “might” exploit this weakness. Now 10GB out of the 300GB I have is no big deal, but I’m not in a position to do a backup and restore to get that memory back in the future either.

THIS IS NOT AN UPDATE…. its a downgrade, what a shame. What is the point of this other than removing the OS? Well we all learn what Sony has up their sleeve and things are only going to get worse.

So now instead of adding features, they are removing them. I wonder when ability to play minis will be removed, or maybe watching videos/pictures.
