Members of the Official PlayStation Forums have been a huge help in submitting some questions for the MAG developers. Answers have been provided by the Game’s Producer Alan Van Slyke, the Designer Jason Olander, Designer and the Senior Community Manager Jeremy Dunham. Did your question get asked?
1.) How the whole MAG idea was created? It’s the final product what you had in mind from the beginning or it has changed?
Alan Van Slyke, Producer: The initial idea for MAG was “battles on a scale never seen before.” To have huge air insertions, mortar barrages, and platoons of players fighting for common goals. In this sense the core of the project never changed. Every feature in the game had to pass our filter of, “does this contribute to the sense of scale”, and add to the core pillars of what MAG is.
The final product is very much what we had in mind from the beginning. We did strip away a little complexity to provide an experience that’s approachable even to casual gamers, but were keenly aware that we needed to retain certain designs (command structure, squad cohesion, squad communication) in place to ensure that a game of this scale wouldn’t devolve into complete chaos.
2.) Which one was the biggest difficulty you had to face while developing a game like this?
Alan Van Slyke: Testing! We had to beg, borrow, and steal participation from other Sony studios to assist in testing the game throughout the development window… both to shakeout design ideas/ maps, as well as to ensure stability at scale. Later in the development cycle, our internal and public Beta phases were invaluable at ensuring that we had a smooth launch – thanks all who participated!
3.) How did you come up with the 3 Factions’ idea? Why those Factions?
Alan Van Slyke: The factions initially started as aggregations of existing international Special Forces and evolved into their current (completely fictional) manifestation over a long period of time. SVER/ Valor/ Raven faction identifications gave players the ability to differentiate (visual aesthetic, weapons, vehicles, skills…), resulting in more choice and replayability. It also leaves the door wide open for us to add new weapons, skills, and gametypes in the future… there’s nothing preventing us from adding the ability to load all 3 factions into the same battle, for instance.
4.) There have been rumors that there will be a 4th fraction. Is that true? An African or Asian faction would be amazing.
Alan Van Slyke: While I won’t comment directly, I will say that one of the things we’re happiest with about MAG is that we’ve built a capable platform. Adding gametypes, factions, weapon types, vehicle types, expanding command structure… the opportunities are limitless, and we’ve only scratched the surface of what we can do with our engine and networking capabilities.
5.) We recently hear a lot about 3D movies and games; can we expect MAG to be in 3D one day?
Alan Van Slyke: Not something we’re currently exploring, but another great idea!
6.) We know eventually that included DLC will be new maps but what else can we expect in terms of DLC? New game modes, new weapons, new gear, new attires?
Jason Olander, Designer: MAG was designed and built to be an ever-expanding platform, so without revealing specifics I think I can safely say that we are constantly evaluating making additions to almost all aspects of the game, which would of course include weapons, gear, uniforms and more.
7.) When are you going to implement a solution for us to launch into games in multiple squads? The actual system is very limited for the Clans.
Jason Olander: As you know, MAG really shines when players are able to group up and play round after round together, creating a great team experience. Limiting how many squads could group up and enter games together was a decision made to ensure that players not in large groups would not be overwhelmed in combat by huge groups of coordinated enemy players. We continue to evaluate whether allowing more than one squad to group together is in the best interests of good gameplay for everyone, so this may change in the future.
8.) In addition to the question before, we expect a “Clans Battle” feature soon, but could you tell us more about it?
Jason Olander: I can’t give details, but I can say that we feel MAG is the ultimate “war game”, and so we will continue to push the bounds of large-scale organized combat with additions down the line.
9.) Will we see any additions to leadership abilities? Such as the OIC having the ability to provide visual prompts which direct squad leaders on the direction of their assault, or even a battle planning screen pre-match which allows the OIC to draw out a ‘plan of attack’ for their team.
Jason Olander: Large-scale combat, an easy to use and understand command system, and rewarding players for working together are ideals we strive for in MAG. Expanding the current command abilities and systems is a key component of enhancing the game, so stay tuned J
10.) Are there any plans of change regarding the vote to kick system? People are getting kicked for not fairy reasons (groups of people feel their friends should be squad leaders rather than them) which can be very annoying especially if it is near the end of the match and you lose all your XP…
Jason Olander: Vote-to-kick is a system designed to enhance the game experience of players by enabling them to remove players that are ruining that experience, and so of course we do not want that to be abused by players just kicking others to make room for their friends, or kicking leaders in order to just take their place. It can be tricky to get this balance right, and so we are always looking into ways to improve the system.
11.) How do you think about the possibility of switching teamkilling off during the first 5 seconds after spawning to avoid instant deaths?
Jason Olander: If you are referring to the occasions in which a player spawns and is accidentally still shooting, knifing etc, and kills a teammate unintentionally, we are working on updates to fix that very problem.
12.) Is there any chance of a leadership tutorial or at least a help guide within the game? A lot of leaders I’ve had recently don’t seem to have a clue about Frago’s or their abilities. The only place I’ve found this information is this forum, there is little mention of it in the manual.
Alan Van Slyke: Additional tutorials and training is definitely something we hope to assist players with. If you’re a new player, ask your squadmates how the FRAGOs work… and if you’re a veteran player, feel free to help your squad leader if he needs it… you’re all in it together!
13.) We are reading many comments in EU about people who can’t find players of the same language inside the games. Are you aware of it? Are you thinking in something to help them such as “lobby” system to organize games per language?
Jeremy Dunham, Senior Community Manager: We’ve definitely discussed ways to make games easier to find on a regional level, but haven’t anything to announce yet regarding any possible solutions. Where we ultimately go with this will be based on demand and the practicality of changing how we originally set up our matchmaking. It’s a tricky thing to iron out, obviously, since you want people to be able to play a game with their countrymen if they so choose, but you also don’t want to break up the audience as a whole too much because then wait times for getting into a game could suffer.

Great FAQ, lots to look forward to by the looks of things. I can’t stop playing this game and wished other people could see why it is great.
One more question, can you make one of the requirements for squad leader to have a mic. Really annoying not having communication.

Are there any improvements planned for managing the clan member list like sorting the member list by on-line status, last time on-line etc.? How about sending messages to all clan members?
When the list is long it’s quite annoying trying to find who are online since you have to browse the list all the way to find all the people who are on-line to send them group invites.
Also a better lobby system would be a welcomed addition:
- see what groups have been formed
- who belongs to a group
- group-to-group messaging

MAG is simply AMAZING! XD
But I think it needs the feature of In-Game Music from our HDDs/USBs/Directly from VidZone etc.

“there’s nothing preventing us from adding the ability to load all 3 factions into the same battle, for instance”
Would LOVE it.

Good to see some things are still in the pipeline. Please do not add the facility to play music in game or at least make sure it can’t be heard be everyone else in the squad!
Pity about the multiple clan squads though.

Why dodge so many questions? And if you have new maps or a new PMC that could be implemented down the road, just say so.
I appreciate this as it keeps MAG in my stream of consciousness (I was thinking it’d been abandoned), but there really isn’t much information here other than “we’re looking into it” or “we’re working on it.”

To sum this up for people who don’t want to read;
- we can’t talk about anything.
- a map with 3 factions on is not impossible.
Look, guys, I like what your doing with MAG but you guys need to understand this; being slow delievering DLC loses more users than gaining them, and not giving people anything to chew on will make them chew on something else.

For anyone down about the clan answer in this post, make sure you check out the official forums.
Check this out (from Zipper): “Clan support will be seeing upgrades as time goes on — I can’t give you exact details just yet; but we are improving this. Probably more so than most would think.”

wardragon989, I agree with your sentiments. I think Sony funds game-changing content. So part of this is Zipper hinting that things are possible, and whether or not it’s created is somewhat out of their hands.
That’s my guess, I don’t really know. Also they don’t want to promise features if Sony decides to pull back and they never release something.

I like the game a lot,but i’ll be trading it this weekend
Main issue is lack of numbers,it’s difficult getting into large games when only 400 of my group are playing domination, that’s 4 games I can try and get on.
Total lack of communication from leaders, most wont issue orders, teamwork is regularly abandoned in favour of personal glory.
I think a system were by the squad leader can assign formations would help,as a player you would see a position Icon on the floor and you gain a steady stream of xp for being in formation.
I would remove sprint, obviously the distances wouldn’t help this, but the fact people can just run off without any thought breaks the teamwork.
Possibly a hot and cold zone system would work, this would be based on were the main contacts are happening, the closer to a hot zone you get the less sprint yoiu have,it could help keep squads together and working as a team because they wouldn’t be splitting.I suppose a few seconds in a hot zone would be enough to get away, any longer under fire and you’d die anyway.
Great game let down by people not playing to it’s strengths.

@StalkingSilence
Yeah that could be why.
But the longer the nothingness remains, the shorter time people will stay around, since there nothing there.
I mean, I heard that there is a version 1.4 or 1.5 which is coming out soon (which is in checking at Sony right now), with 1.5/1.6 being a real big game changer. Why didn’t they promote that instead of the “we can’t comment” line? Not being able to comment for most people is you have nothing. =/
Its just a shame =(

Nice interview, but I think He’s forgetting where some of the inspiration came from. I recall numerous discussions on the Playstation forums during the development of SOCOM 2 and SOCOM 3…including epic battles with 3 adversaries, more objectives on a map and even the current controller scheme used in MAG. Your community helped build what you have today…let’s please not forget that and give credit where credit is due.
Thanks

I really wish they did get into a little more detail about what to expect in the future. It was just a lot of hinting and not really answering the questions. Somebody at Zipper has taken one to many PR classes, because they sure are avoiding any real questions.
In all, it left me hopeful, but BBC2 took me away from MAG and I just started playing MW2 again over BBC2. I could use some enticement Zipper and not merely teasing at possibilities.
First step for you is to make a game type with all three factions battling at once. Then make some new maps already, because it does start to get old. New weapons and outfits I could really care less about at this time.

When MAG works, it works very, very well. I’ve had great games against similarly capable players (for me, middle of the road, not great but not fumbling around so much) with the squad keeping each other informed, calling for support, and coordinating effectively. That’s probably 1 in 10 games at best, and was 0 games when starting out with a sniper rifle that won’t stay still while enemies could pick me off from the other side of the map, and machine guns whose barrels fly all over the shop. The bipod was my saviour when I could finally get it! Zipper need to get this good-game ratio much higher, and the above QA points don’t address that. The designs of MAG and ideas above are all focussed on a best-case situation serving those players who play as a team, but that misses what the typical player is actually like, who doesn’t care for plans, won’t follow orders, and lacks voice-chat. Zipper should create some dummy accounts and play the game as observers to learn what life outside of a large, well-organised Clan, sometimes against impossibly imbalanced teams, is like. Their grand vision of wonderfully coordinated teams in exciting battles just isn’t happening.

i think team killing should just be turned off completely, not just the first 5 seconds, half the time a lot of people are in the same place, and its that chaotic that you accidentally team kill, whereas in other games of the same genre, this doesn’t happen. also, they really need to do something to help snipers, they’ve put invisible wars on every place that looks remotely like it would be a good vantage point, making it impossible to be a sniper, other that those two points though, its one of the best war games i’ve played

So.. does the fact that few of the people who bought the game are actually still playing it.. bothering anyone at Zipper, then? That after the patching, and after removing any throughput requirements on the client and server sides – we went from 20.000 players online during the day, and down to less than 1000?
No? So when there’s 20 minute queues – even longer than in the semi-public beta – this isn’t any cause for alarm at all? No wrong choices made along the way here? In any way?
It simply is normal that an exclusive Sony shooter should end up being trashed by after-market patching intended to broaden the appeal of the game – and things of that sort?
