Hello again everyone,
First of all I’d like to say a massive thanks to everyone who tried episode 001 last week, and for all the feedback we’ve received. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and as we learn what all the shiny FirstPlay knobs and buttons do, it’ll only get better from here.
And just to prove it, episode 002 will be up on the Store from this Thursday (15th), featuring a review of Super Street Fighter IV alongside previews of explosive racer Split/Second: Velocity and dog ‘em up Dead To Rights: Retribution. We’ve also got another packed set of Network Highlights – including a countdown of your best FIFA goals – and a first look at Shinji Mikami’s new shooter Vanquish in our screenshot galleries.
This all comes at our regular, cheaper-than-a-posh-packet-of-biscuits price of 99p (or £8.99 for a 90-day subscription). And to make the deal even sweeter, this week we’re giving away a full minis game worth £2.49. Not to bang on or anything, but that’s pretty awesome.
And lastly – we’d love to hear from you guys. To tell us what you think of the latest episode, or to let us know about ace LittleBigPlanet levels, FIFA goals or Just Cause 2 videos you think we should feature, please email us at FirstPlay@futurenet.com or on Twitter at @firstplay_uk.
See the Future of PS3. First.

Nice, I was getting Ep 2 for the preview of Split/Second anyway but a free Mini is a nice bonus!
Oh and before we get the usual influx of whinging about this being the ‘EU Blog’ note at the top and bottom of this post – “Countries: GB”
This is a GB specific post, just like the French, German, Spanish, and Italian specific posts on the non-English language versions of this blog…

@5 – Super Street Fighter IV is a new game due out on April 30th. Way to make yourself look like an idiot. Proof that many of the posters on this blog complain for the sake of it.
Looking forward to the episode.

@seany: I think you’ll find that there is a key word called “Super” found and adds new features…..
The free mini is a nice way of getting new peeps on board.
Keep up the good work guys!

i do apologise to firstplay guys bt i did think that was street fighter 4 and thats why i ranted bt im wrong so i may purcahse to say sorry now lol . file sizes are too big though as id like to keep episodes on hdd

i think dat FirstPlay, should only be a software download, and there shouldn’t be new editions, it should just keep on adding reviews, wallpapers, themes, free content, EVERY TIME! XD
Alongside betas, demos, add-ons, discounts, exclusive game footage and trailers, perhaps walkthroughs, screenshots and those kinda things etc.
All of these should be streamed, and not downloadable, and then FirstPlay will be AMAZING! XD
So you should never fear missing another episode again X)
So 99p just lasts you a week, and we all know how much for 90 Days etc. etc.

@ Seany,1
I agree about the file size issue. I was also hoping it be stored under videos, not games, as that way we could copy them on to PSP or PC.
21
Posted on 14 April, 2010 at 1:37 pm by seany1
@ 20 great idea m8 id defo subscribe if it was like that . 1.2 gb is way too big for a few reasons
22
Posted on 14 April, 2010 at 1:39 pm by seany1
@ 21 yea same dude but hopefully guys at firstplay can maybe sort something out with file sizes eventually
23
Posted on 14 April, 2010 at 1:42 pm by Ants_Pai
@22 I completely agree, back when I had download limits on my internet it was pretty annoying
@21 Yeah! There should be a tab on the XMB for these things called eMags or Apps so you could put the Singstar viewer and MGS4 Database etc in it
@20 That is also an excellent idea, letting you automatically download based on subscription or choose which episodes to download from within the software application otherwise

Also, because the file sizes of the service is quite large. Why can’t there be an option for downloading the videos?
For example, we download the first play service, download the videos off the service like we do with the screenshots, then delete the 1gb+ episode. This way we don’t have to keep all the episodes on and worry abouot running out of space on the hard-drive.
May not make alot of sense! Just thought of it and rushed to type it!

so6 great idea too theres a large amount of people who would deinetly like to be able to keep the episodes on hdd but even with 250gb and 320 gb hdds 1.2 gb with over 10 episodes is a hefty chunk and some get capped speeds after downloading a certain amount , hopefully u guys can maybe look into this and give us some feedback if anything can indeed be done . thanks

Hopefully someone from Sony is reading this ‘cus these are so great ideas I know for me at lease I hate when things that aren’t games are under my games section also the ability to extract the parts of these episodes you want to keep is a great idea to save space good for the consumer as we get extra space and good for Sony ‘cus they can sell us more PSN Store games with all that free space

The future of PS3, only in UK. No future for the rest of Europe.

@1: I think every episode downloaded will get access to the mini. Not just subscribers.
Looking forward to this, last week’s was good, episode 2 is going to be even better.

@28 Well you have atleast VidZone, we have nothing… Just 50% higher prices on everything on our PS Store. Which is quiete funny, since on average we take 100-300% less income…

@29, I’ll happily trade Vidzone for Video Store.

Stop making the adds compulsory.
I’ve paid for the content, so let me get at it.

Woo, free mini. Sold.

X201 – You can skip it after you have viewed it. Ads keep the price down; if there were no adds then it would be a lot more expensive.
Enjoyed Ep001 very much guys, looking forward to more episodes of FP

Wow do they show advertisement on content you paid for?
It´s just like a real magazine in´t it?
Hope this comes quickly to the rest of us paying customers in the EU.

Can we get more previews of upcoming games please. Last weeks effort was shocking plus there was a demo of the game released at the same time so you’re preview became pretty invalid as we could just try the game ourselves

Hello all,
This is actually FirstPlay’s Tim Clark rather than Nath (they’re making me a log-in in the log-in forges right now).
I’ll be fielding comments this afternoon…
@14 Thnaks! I love you.
@18 We *are* in the process of trying to do deals for full PSN games, and I’m hopeful, but it’s obviously quite complex. As with all the DLC stuff, it will vary from week to week, but we’ve got some cool stuff lined up and the bigger FirstPlay becomes the easier it will (theoretically) get. Currently all items go to both subscribers and single issue purchasers as that seemed fair to us. The advantage of subbing is that it’s hassle-free and a significantly lower price.
@20 Really interesting comment, and certainly something that may be considered at some point in the future depending on how things go.
@21 and @22 The file size is a factor of wanting to deliver as much content as we could each week and for that content to be in HD. Have been genuinely surprised at the number of people asking for an SD version, because our ethos has always been to show the games off looking their best. We kind of imagined people would simply delete each episode after a week and replace with the new one.
Hope that helps.

you guys should give something exclusive to subscribers, at the moment all free DLC or other content is given even if you buy the 99p ones and most people will just buy the 99p ones when some decent content is in it.
perhaps exclusive content to subscribers only or even early access to episodes
at the moment there’s nothing in it to buy a subscription other than the lower price which tbh doesn’t matter when your just waiting for an episode with decent free stuff

Some other comments I’ll add. Europe is absolutely on the rest of the agenda. The UK is essentially a trial, to establish proof of concept, after which the aim is for a full PAL rollout. Obviously again it’s a tricky logistical thing to pull off, what with all the different languages.
Also, as we press on you should find the content – reviews and previews especially – quickly become more timely.
I’ll be back to field more comments, possibly even with my own name, in tic. (What the hell is a tic anyway?)

Is there the ability to offer money-off the PSN games you preview, via a link to the store in First Play? and can you do more PSP previews/ reviews?

If I subscribe to OPM will there be any cut in FirstPlay’s (FP) price or vice-versa?
Also, When FP is released in Ireland, will the the poor internet infrastructure hinder your roll out of the FP?

Posted on 14 April, 2010 at 3:02 pm by rymanb
Hi Tim,
Quick question here. Will subscribers to OPM see any offers for FirstPlay in the near future? (not that anyone would need a ‘special offer’ for that price
)
Thanks

@39 We hope that people enjoy the editorial content as well as the free stuff, and watching it becomes something to look forward to.

yeah i agree but most people will abuse the service for cheap DLC mostly
but as i said before give subscribers more reasons to actually subscribe rather than just the low price

Posted on 14 April, 2010 at 3:07 pm by Nathan Ditum
@44 and 43 It honestly is something we’re still looking at doing but haven’t come up with a solution yet, due to the vagaries of how the different subs systems between Future and the PlayStation Store work. It’s tricky, basically, but we haven’t given up. One idea is that if you can show us you’ve subbed to FirstPlay we’ll then be able to give you extra money off, or a gift, for your next sub to OPM. That seems to be the easier way of working it, but I don’t expect it to kick in for a little bit. I’ll chase up with the subs team here again and please know we do appreciate the subs especially so want to work something out.

FirstPlay needs a Space in Home or the ability to view it within one of the apartments (it will be less effective if you just stick a vid in the Home cinema) plus FirsPlay items in Home.
Is a Twitter link going to be integrated into FirstPlay ?

i do think that maybe there could be exclusive content for subscribers,
maybe only subscribers will be eligible for beta trials that are avaiable through FirstPlay
