Hello again everyone,
First of all I’d like to say a massive thanks to everyone who tried episode 001 last week, and for all the feedback we’ve received. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and as we learn what all the shiny FirstPlay knobs and buttons do, it’ll only get better from here.
And just to prove it, episode 002 will be up on the Store from this Thursday (15th), featuring a review of Super Street Fighter IV alongside previews of explosive racer Split/Second: Velocity and dog ‘em up Dead To Rights: Retribution. We’ve also got another packed set of Network Highlights – including a countdown of your best FIFA goals – and a first look at Shinji Mikami’s new shooter Vanquish in our screenshot galleries.
This all comes at our regular, cheaper-than-a-posh-packet-of-biscuits price of 99p (or £8.99 for a 90-day subscription). And to make the deal even sweeter, this week we’re giving away a full minis game worth £2.49. Not to bang on or anything, but that’s pretty awesome.
And lastly – we’d love to hear from you guys. To tell us what you think of the latest episode, or to let us know about ace LittleBigPlanet levels, FIFA goals or Just Cause 2 videos you think we should feature, please email us at FirstPlay@futurenet.com or on Twitter at @firstplay_uk.
See the Future of PS3. First.

Ok thanks for the answer, well done for creating such a great show for such a great price! I’ll be subbing as soon as I have the money in my virtual wallet.

Do you really need to localize this for every PAL country? Large portion of us speak english you know, otherwise we wouldn’t be able to comment here, for example

Just subscribed but was a bit puzzled as I couldn’t download anything just yet. Then I read you have to log out the PSN Store and go back in to download, and Ep.1 was then marked as free. I thought the PSN had these subscription-things worked out, but it’s still a bit of an hassle.
Wouldn’t it be better to do it the Qore way? (Subscribe, then download from the download list.) I really like their yearly subscriptions that don’t automatically renew as well, but I’m guessing the three-month thing is because this is still kinda a trial. Auto-renew should be optional imho though, unless you pay attention it’s too easy to miss…

@48 Agreed re Home. Would like to work more Twitter functionality in if possible. We can be found @FirstPlay_UK.
@49 It’s a interesting dilemma. We’re keen not to upset either the subs or single issue people. I guess it’ll depend how many beta keys we get to a degree, but currently the plan is enough for everyone.
@50 Cool, thanks!

@52 Having localised languages is down to individual territories to decide. It’d be *much* easier for us if everyone was happy to take the existing version, although from my days working on PlayStation.com I think some of the humour and local references might get a bit lost in translation.

This is a little off-topic, but can I sub to the magazine if I live in Ireland?

@57 Sure thing. I think you may count as overseas, though, if you’re in Eire rather Northern Ireland. http://www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk/store/displayitem.asp?sid=548&am p;id=14108

Loving the the episodes both episode 1 and the beta.
Do you have any plans to get free content for Playstation Home?

I think the idea of a FirstPlay software application (in the same vein as VidZone but stored with in the Game tab or the Video tab) is an excellent idea and would really allow you to expand the scope of the service, examples that spring to mind include…
- The option to download an episode’s content piece by piece
- The option to stream content/view part-way through the download
- The option to stream lower quality video (iPlayer quality) for people with a slow internet connection
- The ability to easily stream/redownload purchased back issues
- The ability to offer ‘better’ freebies to subscribers only
- Easier to manage your subscription or download episodes from a customised PSN Store ‘in-game’ interface.
- Potentially smaller downloads as only content packages would be needed rather than the full interface (though I suspect most of the size is the HD video)
- Potentially removes the need for the long ‘install’ process after download of an episode
- Potentially the option to include some sort of PSP Remote View connectivity

I love the way you can save these HD screenshots onto a USB device. How about an app for the PC that allows you to view all this on it. Would be pretty cool same also with it being able to be viewed on a PSP device.

I think giving subscribers special treatment is a bad idea.

There giving away a free mini so they sell more i think its a waste of money realy once you have watched them once you wouldnt watch them again they also take up to much room on ya ps3 over 1gig each i downloaded the 1st 1 i dont think i’ll download anymore i didnt think much of it

@60 It should work with remote view already. Will certainly take the streaming suggestion onboard but a change that significant would form part of a full 2.0 version.
@63 Many thanks!
@64 Fair enough. The idea wasn’t that you keep them and rewatch over and over again. At 99p it’s intended to be weekly and disposable. But thanks for having a look anyway.
@59 Definitely going to look into Home stuff. Would people want clothing etc.?

Maybe giving away exclusive HOME items (Clothing, furniture Etc) with FirstPlay would be a good idea
Anyway love your product, keep up the good work guys!

Personally I’d prefer to have it in Ireland than have FirstPlay Home clothes! Please get it to us soon guys, we speak the same language so we should be easily expanded to

Posted on 14 April, 2010 at 4:45 pm by Nathan Ditum
@68 Given the language thing I expect Ireland to be top of the list!
@66 & 67 What kind of furniture – a FirstPlay coffee table? Drinks cabinet would be more appropriate right now.

I`m still undecided about this. Loads of potential but excessive ads, huge downloads and slow download speed (quick enough to play games online but download speeds vary ridiculously in my area. Hustle Kings 45mb update took 20mins to download last week) are making me reluctant to subscribe. Can`t the downloads be split into sections? That way I could pick the section most interesting to me to download first then download rest when I want too later on.

@70 Sadly the package file is bundled together at this point. Might be easier for us to submit/QA it if it was separate, hence also our interest in the streaming idea, but the 1GB size isn’t so different to standard demos which people download regularly. Again, we’ll take the comment on board with regard to future planning.
As discussed previously, the ads enable us to keep the issue price down and become skippable once watched.

I actually like the ads, they don’t bother me at all.
They remind me of the games I’ve yet too purchase.
More verity would be nice though, more Blu-ray/cinema ads (Kick-ass) Etc

You’d think that Sony would have learnt by now that their “divide and conquer” strategy isn’t proving to be a popular one…
“Obviously again it’s a tricky logistical thing to pull off, what with all the different languages.”
If you’re going to force me to buy it in Finnish instead of English, here’s how much I’ll end up spending on it:

Just viewed the first episode and I do think some of the typical British humour would be lost in translation, but any translation to Dutch would be horrible anyway. It just doesn’t sound right. I certainly wouldn’t buy it if it was all in Dutch.
Wouldn’t it be easier to only include optional(!) subtitles instead? This way the people that can understand English are happy (most of the Dutch gits), and other countries that don’t as well as the younger audience has subtitles.
I think Home stuff is only interesting to a limited age group that actually use Home, but I liked DLC in this episode for JC2 though. As well as betas and such are way more interesting than virtual clothes.

here’s a litte proof that people will download firstplay just for the DLC or extra content….
keep the content for subscribers!

Whilst we’re getting questions answered, is there a fix on the way for BD Remote support? Specifically the Enter button and video playback using play, pause, ff, rw etc?
I liked the earlier suggestion (@20?) about exporting some video content, PlayTV does that really well at the moment.

@ Roxas598
Its a win win, people will buy it for the DLC etc… but the content on the episode will also catch there eye. If you want my opinion I like the fact all the content is available for all customers not just subscribers

Hi Tim! I just have one question and it may of been asked! Would it not be easier for you to have a client that we download originally then it updates when we enter it! Only for subscribers though! Much like Vidzone does, Would be much easier and may reduce file size!

i’m liking firstplay so far, i’m a big fan of lucy porter so i’m happy to hear her doing the voice over, it would be nice to see her too though instead of just a voice over.
one feature i would like to see is a backup option, so i could save episodes i like and be able to restore them and watch them again without having to redownload them.
the only consern i have about firstplay is the weekly release schedule, isn’t it going to be hard to keep a steady flow of material?
incidentally does lucy write her own scripts for the voice over?

This is just my kind of show. More content to PSN is just great whatever the content may be, and this concept seems to already work from what I’ve read from comments and forums.
Soo, release it in Norway
I simply can’t wait for this. And someone mentioned something about language, and I bet most of the people in Europe especially Norway would appreciate getting the show in english.
A question for someone who have seen the show, how long is it in total? Are we talking about over an hour?

Anyway i bought this one cause i was intrested in the Mini cheaper and then i was pleasantly surprised by the content and quality of the content for the 99p i payed
Great host, great content very well done. I may end up subsribing for this.
