Hi, Just wanted to let you know that the guys at Cambridge studios are working really hard to develop some great new features for PlayTV. The next update for PlayTV is due later this year but testing of some of the new features has already begun.
I don’t want to give too much away and spoil the surprise but a little hint to one of the new features is that PlayTV will have links to the worlds most popular social network site, Facebook. Other great enhancements to PlayTV and brand new features will also be included in the update.
As soon as these exciting new features are ready for you I’ll give you all the details here on the blog.
Hope you are enjoying your PlayTV on your PS3. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to add them and I’ll be back on here on Monday to answer as many as I can.
I look forward to getting this update to you later in the year.

I really wouldn’t mind if you spoil the “surprise” – in fact I’d prefer you to let us know what’s coming!!
I would really like to see
1) Better stability – since getting the new version it freezes a lot and you have to reboot the whole PS3. This happens if you leave it on the main menu (with Live TV, Library icons etc.) for more than a couple of minutes. If you leave it on the library it seems not to crash. VERY ANNOYING and I’d like to see a minor update ASAP to address this. [Yes I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling - I even took my new Slim back to the shop and exchanged it but I still get this issue.]
2) Better volume control – it’s quicker to fumble around for the TV remote than to wade into the dark depths of the menus to find the current volume!
3) Freeview+ support – it’s embarassing not having proper Series Link etc. when my friends with Sky+ have such a better experience.
4) Uninterested with the Facebook integration – despite being a heavy Facebook user.
5) Are you going to bring out an HD version? I’m guessing you will eventually – but would it really hurt that much just to tell us all that you’re going to?

I hope that everyones comments abput Facebook are taken on board, that this feature is ditched and you don’t decide to force it through just because you’ve already started work on it. Can we just have features that are relevant to watching TV please?

Agreed, this is unbelievably poor PR. Did they expect people to go ‘Wow, with this never-demanded Facebook functionality in eight months’ time you’re really spoiling us?’
Well apologies for asking pertinent questions, by the time Sony get round to making a statement on Freeview HD, series link and everything else people actually want no doubt most of us will already have got something that’ll do the job.
I’m not going to come back here to check again. Badly done, Mr Thorpe: badly done.

Haven’t read the whole thread, but here are some features that are BADLY needed in Australia:
1. Australian TV networks have no idea how to schedule their programs so that they start and finish on time, so believe it or not, ending my recording 10 minutes late is not enough. I’m sick of losing the last few minutes of my recording because our networks are inept.
2. Let me press RECORD and keep recording until I press STOP. If we rely on the guide to record, recordings are almost always cut short, particularly when recording an episode of a series…
3. If I schedule two recordings that overlap, give me the opportunity to cut one short. I tried unsuccessfully to schedule a recording that finished at 21:01 on one channel and one that started at 21:00 on another. At least let me choose to stop the first one when the second one starts.
I’m sure there is a smart person at Sony who can read this and get it to the right person!

Totally agree with effy_101…Aussie TV broadcasters are driving me mad they are useless and its always those dancing with the stars/masterchef/so you think you can dance shows that go over!!
my wishlist:
1. 10 min delay isn’t enough.
2. Series Link would be grand.
3. Record two shows at once (obviously you must watch one of them) but what if i’m recording a show for my mrs?
4. More regular updates please.
Otherwise I LOVE PLAYTV great work Sony!

Seriously Facebook? Not remotely bothered about that i mean you can use the net on your PS3 anyway so pointless
1) Series Link, this is what everyone wants
2) Allow a check boc to get rid of message telling you everytime you switch channels your going to lose data, duh!
3) Faster load up times
4) More stability with updates to match the PS3 ones to stop crashing /freezing
5) Also i liked what someone else mentioned which is log into your PS3 account anywhere in the world/country and set record times for shows
6) Recording 2 channels at once. Record one watch one is so 80′s i could do that with my vcr
MOst importantly why don’t you just tell us what is going to be in the update we’re not kids plus if you tell us we can tell you wether or not we approve or wether it would be totally useless.
These may seem like alot of gripes but tbh i still really like Playtv its just these few tweaks would make it perfect.

*it probably cant be done but would be really good – play tv having a website like sky so you can remotely record tv on your laptop/phone ect.
*series link
*once all recordings are finished turn ps3 off (whereas as at the moment if i turn my ps3 off at 12 and im recording somethink at 12 and a scheduled recording at 4-and i turn my tv off so it says once recording is finished it will turn off – the recording at 4 wont record)
*faster loading
the first one i would really like, but play tv at the minute is amazing thanks

just to clarify – point one, i would like a website with a tv guide that lets you select for example ‘the simpsons’ from a tv listing list it would be sent to my ps3 and would be recorded when ‘the simpsons’ starts.
Thanks Bradley

About setting recordings over the internet:
You can actually do this already even though it requires a PSP. Register your PSP to your PS3 via “settings / remote play settings / register device”. After you have completed this, set “remote start” on. This enables you to switch on your PS3 from anywhere in the world as long as you’ve got a wifi signal to connect to with your PSP (and you need to sign in to PSN with your PSP aswell).
About recording multiple channels:
Even old linux boxes with dual tuners can record over 10 channels simultaneously. With one tuner you can record one mux which transmits 5-6 channels, hence with two tuners one could record two muxes (MUX is a datastream containing multiple channels). Only thing you need is a bus that can transfer those muxes (one mux tends to be around 25Mbps) and a harddrive fast enough to save them. Decoding video from the stream requires more CPU power naturally.

I’ll see what I can raise from Sony about getting a response to this but I doubt I’ll get anywhere.
For me, PlayTV has pretty much worked perfectly since I bought it. The only thing wrong with my PS3 is the fact that I need an ethernet cable every time I want to go on the internet, because the WiFi isn’t strong enough.
Therefore, Facebook integration would be useless for me, and I’m a very heavy Facebook user. I use my iPhone or laptop instead, which handily have a proper keyboard built-in to both…
Perhaps it could be an idea to allow remapping of the controller? I don’t have the remote, and just use my PS3 controller (the standard gaming one), and it’s a bit of a pain sometimes to do things that require multiple clicks (such as subtitles). It would be handy to allow a user to make their own mappings.
Series Link is a must, and HD would be preferable, although I have noted an improved picture throughout all of the updates.

Facebook is zero interest to me.
I would be looking for
- ability to remote record program/send record requests remotely from either a web based login page, or a mobile or pc. This is of great use when I am away from home, being able to set and schedule recordings.
- series linking – please.
- ability to view recorded shows on my laptop/pc, even if it has to be through some proprietry SONY “viewer”. I don`t own a PSP and see no logic in why I should need to buy and carry one around just to watch recorded programs from MY PS3. I should be able to do this from any laptop and/or mobile device.
- HD
