Greetings, PlayStation travellers,
Big thanks again to everyone who’s tried FirstPlay episodes 001 and 002 so far. They’re both still available on the Store for the princely sum of 99p, and include good things like a Super Street Fighter IV review, a free minis game, and as many jokes as we could write in a week without going mad.
Episode 003 will be up on the Store from this Thursday, featuring an HD review of EA Sports’ 2010 FIFA World Cup, and previews of bad-tempered arcade racer Blur and 2K’s elegantly hatted gangster epic Mafia II. There’s also another round of Network Highlights – including a look at PS3’s best online shooters and the latest downloadable movies – and the latest screenshots of UFC Undisputed 2010 andDead Rising 2.
As ever, this is all yours for just 99p, or even less if you sign up for a 90-day subscription.
We’re also looking for ways to get FirstPlay more involved with the PS3 community. If you’ve got any PS3 videos you’d like to share – maybe you’ve captured some awesome Modern Warfare 2 kills, or a flawless WipEout lap, or anything at all – we want to hear about it. You can get in touch with us through our new YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/FirstPlayUK, email us at FirstPlay@futurenet.com or hit us up on on Twitter at @firstplay_uk.
See the future of PS3. First.

I’m a little disappointed with this series so far.. The beta (episode 1) had 3 reviews and more content – Episode 2 had just 1 review and episode 3 is following suit with just the 1 review… I’m not convinced this is value for money…
I do like the quality of the reviews and how it is presented, but I don’t think we’re getting a lot of content for the price, especially considering the games reviewed are all free to read / watch in HD online from most gaming sites… and there’s little in the way of exclusive previews that hasn’t been seen elsewhere…

Obviously First Play is a success from what I’ve read from different sites and so on. So why not just release this in Norway now? Can’t get what there is to loose to release this in a few other countries aswell?

Looking good, I’ve loved the first three episodes so far (Beta and 1 & 2) and it seems I will enjoy this week’s episode just as much. Keep up the good work guys!

wiiman07, I know what you mean – while the British soak up FirstPlay and the Americans have the sexy Veronica Belmont in Qore it seems as usual us Kiwis and Aussies sit on the sidelines and get forgotten about (do we even get that ‘The Chaser’ or whatever that PSN reality show is called?).
By now wiiman07 you should have already guessed that SCE New Zealand and Australia along with SCEE are ‘teh_suck’, except for when it comes to advertising new stuff that they want you to buy (funny that).
To bad our rants “only fall on deaf ears” even though SCE think they know what we want (however, they are fooling themselves). Sometimes I wonder if there is only 10 employees working on 25+ projects for SCEE regions and every now and again they remember we exist (and I’m darn sure there is only 1 person that develops the firmware updates for the PS3).
Another Facepalm due to Sony’s continual fail or maybe due to them maximizing profits?? To bad this comment, like many others, will simply be ignored – or even deleted – by the powers that be.
Peace out wiiman07, you are NOT alone.

Having the service only in the UK is just ridicules. Spaming this site with info about a service that one little country gets is just damn irritating.

There’s this other version of online reviews and content etc that costs you nothing – it’s called the internet.
Buying this seems like the rip.

boo! more boring football! why can’t they include anything else but football? i can’t see myself buying anymore episodes because of the huge attention to football compared to other game reviews and features in the episodes, on top of that we have to see wayne rooney’s ugly mug too.

This post is for LarZen. (And my BIG country) it’s time the UK got a little something that others don’t have. And for the size we are we are sore bigger then you think in more ways then one.

Why don’t they create a division for the UK only (ie. SCEUK)?
Oh right, to cover up that SCEE has almost no online services/content available in the rest of the EU.

@5 The number of reviews is dependent on what games are being released, obviously, but in terms of overall content there shouldn’t be a drop-off as we do the same amount of stuff, give or take, every week. More specifically, they’ll always be 4/5 videos in the HD reviews & previews section.

@16 We cover FIFA because it’s a new game, the series is incredibly popular, and there’s the small matter of the world cup coming up. But we’ll be paying the same attention to all the big games, and plenty of smaller stuff too. It just happens that FIFA is about to be released, hence covering it.

Regarding all the comments on licensed versions for other countries, I’d reiterate this is absolutely the plan but can’t just be switched on over night. It requires new staff working to a weekly schedule for each territory. The logical plan was to test in one place first before pushing ahead. Future (who make FirstPlay) is a UK company, so it’s natural we started off here. But the plan *is* for it come to *all* of Europe.

I trust that plans for expansion are underway, until there’s more word (soon please!) I’ll sit patiently waiting

Posted on 20 April, 2010 at 4:56 pm by Raider197
Wait, I think I misunderstood. “It requires new staff working to a weekly schedule for each territory.” Do you mean, in Ireland for example, there’d be a different team making an Irish version of FirstPlay instead of just giving us the UK one?

FirstPlay shouldn’t be available on the PlayStation Store as downloads!
That’s were PlayStation Magazine UK got it wrong!
It should be a software like VidZone, meaning that we do not download the content, but stream ALL the videos, wallpapers (till we download em onto our HDD), etc. etc.
P.S. NO CONTENT (Wallpapers, Themes, Videos, Reviews, Adverts etc. etc.) should be deleted, more and more should be added, just like VidZone again =P
That way we’d get the best outta FirstPlay, and for those who think they can outsmart the system by subscribing once a month, THEY’RE WRONG!
As if they try to access some content, only available for one week, and you’re like 2 months late, you have to pay 99p to add ALL of the content for that week onto your PSN ID =P

@26 Ireland is an exception, as is Australia, in that we speak them same lingo – but it’s still down to individual territories to decide if they want to carry the UK edition or reversion it locally.
@27 Yes, this was a point made last week and I agree it’s interesting (and might actually make our lives easier). You’re talking about a serious amount of development work to switch delivery systems though, so all I can say is it will likely be on the table when we come up with v2.0 of FirstPlay, but in the immediate future it won’t be changed.

Vidzone & FirstPlay = Poland! When Poland?

Posted on 20 April, 2010 at 5:42 pm by Bonyman
FirstPlay needs to be first with a lot of it’s content for it to be a success imo.
I think hands-on previews of games in progress, before anyone else, rather than reviews will be the making of it.
OPM should be well placed to get access to such material and I think with games like Agent and The Last Guardian on the way FirstPlay could be poised for some very good reveals in the near future, hopefully.
And there’s nothing wrong with a free mini or 2..
I personally neither reside in UK nor have access to PSN ( 3.15 > 3.21
) so i won’t be buying the current run of FirstPlay, however i’m still interested in seeing how it develops … it’s early days yet. Plenty of time to get it right before unleashing it on the rest of us :b

As I stated when I PSN messaged you guys ( much thanks for the reply by the way, highly unexpected but hugely apprieciated! ) you guys are kings in your own right and FirstPlay is AMAZING.
Yes the Internet gives you reviews “free of charge” but I like the content you cover, how you cover it, and the freebies always help too
all these naysayers need not apply but they are missing out big time!
Is it possible to introduce the ability to DOWNLOAD the galleries as ‘wallpapers’ or include some downloaded screensavers / pictures of new games??

ah, if you read OPM you’d know the whole team is gay for FIFA and jump at any chance to mention it again.

@32….Most of the screenshots within the Galleries can be downloaded to the Photos section of the XMB. Simply hit Triangle I think, and the screenshot is conveniently saved into an album named ‘FirstPlay’.
Note than some of them do not include this feature, presumably at the request of the developer.

Why don’t you guys just release it the way it is now (as in: in english only) in the rest of Europe in the meantime, while you’re busy working on other region-specific versions? If anything, I think this here blog proves you the vast majority of continental Europe speaks english, surely?
You could maybe offer it at a discount for a while, due to it only being in english, I don’t know…
What I know though, is that you must have more than just a couple video reviews/previews. I was expecting Qore to be something akin to the 2,5-3 hr-long DVD that was once offered with defunct PSW mag, only to realize the content was even more shallow than the couple of cr*p VG-related shows we’ve ever had in France. Such a disappointment…Make sure you don’t fall in the same traps with 1stPlay and w/e other similar stuff you come up with, ok?

After viewing a few episodes of Qore last year I have been eagerly looking forward to OPM HD/FirstPlay.
I’ve so far found the content to be quite superficial. For anyone who frequents gaming blogs the reviews & features are already quite dated by the time FirstPlay is released.
Qore has features other than the obvious reviews of games; such as the Insomniac Mo-Cap sessions for Resistance 2, or the arcade convention & interviews with the OST artists for SFIV. These were interesting features which weren’t already available elsewhere.

@divine1000 – ON – THE – MONEY!
hey. for guys who are complaining about not having this, it’s actually not that great. the reviews are pretty standard and to be honest you’re better off going on to GTTV cos that’s free and the reviewers are impartial (to a point i guess). it’s basically the same presentation (superficial as above). one problem is guess that you’ll have difficulty getting on there through the PS3 browser because it’s half-assed.
better still go to epicbattleaxe.com – please just check it out.
not only that but compared to the US and JP stores it’s still weak.
as much as i love my PS3, this is just sycophantyic propaganda.
the GOW3 review was pretty rubbish. i love the game and i’m struggling through on titan mode, but the review missed out on all of the crucial pros and cons, gave it a 9 and said “go buy it!” what else do you expect?
37
Posted on 21 April, 2010 at 12:16 am by PAUL1708
I thought that the gow3 review was good it spent a good few mins on it so not rushed. I have to say that i got the frist Episode and signed up for 3 mths for £8.99 brillant price for what you offer. TThe free downloads are good as well so you are kinda geting your money back anyway. Episode2 had a free mini all tho very basic game this still would off been at least a few pounds on the PSN store.
I think the only improvement that could happen is to see a app off frist play no downloads from PSN but steam as some one elase said earlyer in the blog.
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK GUYS AND DONT CHANGE ANYTHING.

tim, half of the games and apps on the PS3 arent even translated in skandinavia. and lets face it, the ppl who would be interrested in first play probobly know english good enough to just get the UK version…
some ppl do enjoy subtitle in games with good stories, but for some quick news the majority dont need subtitles… please try to bring this to us, we dont even have a video store…
and also, love ur podcast!

tbh, I prefer it to be download rather than a vidzone equivalent… Streaming HD content just doesn’t feel as crisp (amount other reasons)… I can understand downloading 1GB of content a week is a bit of a put of but for me it isn’t with 50mb broadband.
If it was to switch to dedicated software streaming, please leave it optional and continue to keep it on the ps store for download as well.

I’ll have to get you that hat, though – so far no other complaints… I’ll make sure we reply properly as soon as we’re clear of the madness.

I did subscribe, but if the content doesn’t improve within the 90 days I won’t be renewing.
I would compliment Lucy Porter for her delivery, she often is the best part. Kind of reminds me of Violet Berlin of Gamepad.
There are several of the same type of games mags for the Xbox which are as interesting and free, and as others have said there’s always the internet.
