Less than a year since VidZone launched on June 11 2009, we are extremely excited to announce VidZone can offer our very own music TV Channels and many more new features and improvements.
The timing could not be better as VidZone on PlayStation3 has just clocked over 3 MILLION USERS who have played over 350 million streams. Just to put it in perspective, this is over 2500 years of videos streamed!!
What is ‘VIDZONE TV’?
Just so there is no confusion – the VidZone we all know and love will still be available and re-named ‘VidZone On Demand’. ‘VidZone TV’ is a new feature and a different way to enjoy VidZone.
We have dreamt of having over 100 music TV channels at your disposal for any mood or occasion at the touch of a button – this dream is now a reality. Via a small update to your existing application, VidZone TV gives you all the music you can wish for. Channels will fall under 5 categories – Artist, Genre, Year, Label and General (for everything else!)
We think you’ll enjoy VidZone TV just as much, or even more, than VidZone On-Demand because, just like regular linear TV, it means you can simply select pre-programmed music TV Channels and let the music roll. No need to search the VidZone catalogue and no need to create your own playlist. In other words, prepare the party or get lazy and let VidZone do the work! Some of our favourite channels include Pop Punk TV, 80s TV, Rock Legends TV, The VidZone Chart TV, All Time Classics TV, Celebrity Playlist: Dizzee Rascal TV, Dave Grohl & Friends TV, VidZone Interviews TV and Video Of The Day TV (where all the exclusives and premieres will feature). There really is a channel (or three!) for everyone. And more – VidZone TV has also launched Kids TV, Teen Pop TV, Karaoke Favourites TV and Music Divas TV!
MORE NEW FEATURES & IMPROVEMENTS
New main menu carousel – Sparkly brand new look carousel screen for selecting links to VidZone: TV, Featured, On Demand, Settings and upcoming other new upcoming features.
Search function is improved – It is now possible to perform ‘like’ searches – e.g. “Kill” for The Killers.
In-store game purchasing – Purchase selected PlayStation Store games / content advertised in VidZone without exiting the VidZone application.
Full screen experience enhanced – It’s now possible to see which video is coming up next. There is also a key for all functions and ticker bar available to provide valuable information to users about new/must see content.
Video of The Day TV – The music industry is helping us offer one ultimate video of the day, every day. It will play immediately after opening the application.
Clickable pre-rolls – Some pre-roll advertisement videos are now clickable and launch the Internet Browser.
Title changes – “Related Videos” has been renamed to “More by this Artist” “Home Page” renamed to “Featured”.
Email settings – It’s now possible to sign up or unsubscribe to emails in Settings > Help menu. If you want to receive updates or competitions from VidZone you need to be registered by email.

Ben, the app keeps freezing on me constantly. The videos still play, but the navigation keeps crashing.

Mine doesn’t even do anything.
I wait almost an hour to get it start, and then it just doesn’t play anything.
I’m sorry, but I find it useless as I can’t do anything with it and keeps making my PS3 crash.

Had to put up with some obnoxious advertisement music video which is 4mins(!) long and locks up vidzone everytime I change the channel or boot up vidzone tv.
How incredibly intrusive I wont be touching vidzone again until this is fixed, disgusting.

Hi Bahamut44-4,
This should be fixed now! Sorry about that.

This is a great service! Never used VidZone before, but I will now!
Although I do think the “advertisement” (which is in fact a 4 minute music video) needs to go. Come on, every 3 songs we get that?

Few things that could be improved:
- Background wallpapers make reading menu text difficult
- The left side of the search bar is off-white with white text overlaid – difficult to read
- UI and video stutters for a second when changing views, making some other inputs
- I can see why you’re using the letter scrolling method for realtime search results but even if the on-screen system keyboard can’t be made to do the same, it’s still far quicker an input method and should be more immediately accessible

@101
Actually EHRGEIZ-XIII, there were more than 100 000 PS3 sold in Poland before June 2009. It’s one year later and I think we can safely assume that that number is much higher now. Considering how expensive the console is in Poland, that is a pretty good result.
Therefore the question “When Poland?” is justified.

Will retry asap and update!

At first I thought this update was the best thing since sliced bread, but after using it I hate it. A little bit.
Why? First of all almost a fourth of the screen is obstructed for several seconds ever 20 seconds. That just kills the joy of watching a beautiful music video. There’s no need for that huge manual/interface/info/adblock and if it stays there I might as well not use the service at all.
Either show it less often or make it more discrete (preferably both).
I was also a bit disappointed that you can’t skip tracks on Vidzone TV. I get it. It’s supposed to be tv. But man, a skip button would be golden.
I hope you guys fix it, because if you do, you’re on to a winner.

The black text against black background advert problem I submitted yesterday is not properly fixed yet. I see you switched some text color from black to white in the Featured page but everything else is still “black on black”. It’s really painful to navigate and unpleasant to the eyes.

Hi Marcel,
You’re right, it’s not perfect yet. I’m afraid we simply ran out of time last week. It’s been pretty busy in the office!
We’ll try to get this fixed as soon as we can but the skin isn’t permanent anyway so it should be gone soon.

Hi, I like that you are trying to improve the UI (that really needs some fixing, my gf curses everytime she uses it). The New UI element how ever good looking the are dont match the rest of the UI, which should always be be big no no when creating UI’s. One suggestion that would make the vidzone experince more like the rest of the PS3 is to change the x and squar button fuctionallity, it would just make more sense like that, especially if you are using a remote control.

Hi Mr. Ben!
I wanna say that I think that the VidZone service is just amazing, I love it. It’s the best update for the PS3 in a very very long time.
I just would whish that the sound quality was a bit higher, the sound is pretty ok at normal to low sound volume, but when turning the volume up a bit more the flaws in the sound quality become apparent, the sound becomes harsh hard and noisy. I have an excellent hifi setup, and I listen to SACD’s even, so I know it’s not my setup.
Please please please, is there any way of pumping up the quality of the sound being streamed? I doesn’t need to be CD quality but just a bit higher than what it is now. Most people have 5-50 Mbit broadband connections now, so bandwidth shouldn’t be an issue.
Thanks.
Posted on 26 April, 2010 at 10:38 am by Ben Creasey
Hi EmpireNO,
This may be something we look at in the future with the development of higher speed broadband, but at the moment the average connection isn’t 5-50mb in all VidZone territories.
If we were to up the sound quality there would still be a lot of people who would no longer be able to use VidZone properly.
As soon as average broadband speeds increase across all VidZone territories we will look at increasing the size of the files.
Thanks,
Ben

Alright, I’ve been happy about the update, but guess what? It crashed my PS3 a few times… What’s wrong with that new VidZone?
125
Posted on 24 April, 2010 at 11:33 am by DEKOWOLF
Sorry to tell you, but you won’t go anywhere praising the good feedback and ignoring the rest.
You only get mostly bad feedback because…well guess? it’s what’s going on.
Vidzone is a great featured, but it’s causing too many problems.
Ever since it was made available in Portugal, I can’t get into it not even once.
I can never see any videos and it crashes all the time.
I would appreciate at least some decent support, instead of telling me to shut up and deal with it.
If that’s the case, I’ll just deleted from my PS3, as is taking useless space.

@Dekowolf
Ben hasn’t ignored the negative feedback. It can quite clearly be seen he has even replied to some people. ie. the Italian person who complained about hard to read text got a reply.
Have you even emailed customer support?? Because I’d put money on it that they didn’t say “shut up and deal with it” or anything remotely close to it.
Why don’t you actually try emailing them before having a go.
Idiot.

Alright, I decided to try it again (cf my comment at #128)… and once again, it crashed again.

Hi Maddymad,
We think we’ve found a bug and are currently fixing it.
Thanks,
Ben

Great update to Vidzone, i had grown a little tired of it but this has made me want to use it once again, so good going on that one!
Just one little thing i would change, on the TV channels, a skip to next would make it amazing!
I mean love listening to the alternate channels on there, but there are a few tracks i would never listen, to would be nice to be able to skip past them.
Thankies!

Well, now that i’m back on PSN i decided to give the update a go.
It was only when i re-downloaded it and had to update (took about an hour to update catalogue :O) i discovered that all my playlists were gone… I thought they would be stored seperately like a game save? Perhaps that’s a feature that could be implemented in future.
So, i checked out Dave Grohl Tv and was shocked by the double-pixel appearance of the video…
)
The ‘info’ bar is far too obstructive ( should at least be at bottom of screen instead of foating a few cm above it), and it should fade out 10 secs into video and re-appear 10 secs before the end.(imabho
I would also like to be able to skip to next video in the TV channels.
Ok, time to search for one of my favourites and a track i actually discovered thru vidzone previously, Bob Dylans Cold Irons Bound… found it…playing it… WTH… who smeared vaseline all over it…?
I’m not going to delete it straight away, gonna give it another little chance although it’s a daunting task refilling my playlists again… Please make them seperate from the app.

Why do you have Arcade Fire listed as Artist with no videos to watch?
