In-between creating mods of football legends for a competition at playstation2010fifaworldcup.com and writing about the game for eu.playstation.com, I’ve played a lot of ModNation Racers over the last couple of months.
Much of our coverage has focused on how easy it is to create your own mods, karts and tracks. Believe me, it’s no exaggeration to say that you can be racing on your own unique course using your own character and vehicle in less than ten minutes.
So when William Ho, Game Designer from United Front Games, came into the SCEE office for an interview, I wanted to talk about the more advanced creation tools, as well as Career Mode and online racing via PlayStation Network, in greater depth. Click below to watch the full interview.
Letting your imagination spill onto the screen is a doddle in ModNation Racers and, beneath the surface, there’s an astounding array of creative options for you to get your teeth into.
I honestly can’t wait to see what you do with them.

Great interview indeed, I’m looking forward to this game.
Also nice to see that our survey from a while back is being noticed, I personally ticked it would be nice to see more interviews.

Sorry for the delayed response – I’ve been out of the office for the last couple of days. If you have any specific questions about ModNation then I’ll try to answer over the weekend. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll try my best to find out on Monday. Thanks for the positive feedback… very reassuring!

BTW! The loadtimes is not good. To load a track I counted to about 50 seconds. To go back to the hub it takes about 20 seconds. This is very frustrating when you just want to race a simple track. To load the track editor it takes about 30 seconds…

DOn’t know whats so good about it, to me a race game is a race game. Theres probably no story to this at all. I would rather see a twisted metal game than this.

If you mean story in terms of plot, there is a lengthy story that I won’t spoil here. I’m a big fan of ModNation, personally.

@10 Actually, there is a story in this game. And if you think a race game is a race game, then why bother read about it? You seem to know what you get.

it just seems more of a custom-making game to me, thats all

Looking forward to this game, but you could have sounded a bit more enthusiastic in your interview James! Seriously, I thought you were gonna fall asleep or something haha.

I’m very interested but I figure you’re more interested in hearing from the developers than me, so i try to keep relatively quiet and let them speak. Appreciate the feedback though – just put it down to my personality!

I’ve got this on pre-order from Game, so I can get my exclusive Nathan Drake character mod. I usually pre-order at Amazon…but Ratchet and Clank? Erm, no thanks. Although pre-ordering at Play was also tempting for the Kratos character mod.
Can’t wait to whiz around as Nathan in his Jungle Jeep…LOL

@14 – i didnt say my comment was a fact. just an opinion. Just by looking at the game (not actually reading up on it)
Posted on 15 May, 2010 at 7:26 am by James Gallagher
Fair enough, I watched that bit back and can see how it might be confusing. What William was driving at was that the story and the cut-scenes that go with it aren’t going to go on for hours – this is a racing game, after all, so the story gives the career mode a sense of direction and motivation without keeping you off the track for too long.

@18 – I’ve ordered from Game as well. Wasn’t really too fussed over which characters I got, so I decided that the reward points were more valuable. Besides, I can just create my own unique characters anyways : P
I can’t wait to make a track though. I never felt the urge to master the art of LBP, but ModNation just looks so simple! Bring on release day!

The big question is are they working on reducing loading times? This seems to be the biggest complaint in reviews about what otherwise looks like a ton of fun.

James – good point, and it worked well actually because it was a good interview, nice and informative. But I just got the impression you didn’t really like the game. Ignore me

@22
Yes they are working on the loading times, a patch will be available to shorten the time.

@25 Do some research and you’ll find it..
IMPROVING LOAD TIMES
There have been concerns online about long load times in the final game and while even though UFG improved load times since the beta, they are looking into further optimizing the game via a post-launch patch!
