Two million levels designed by you, the PlayStation community, and still counting; those were the numbers tossed around at the outset of the spectacular LittleBigPlanet 2 unveiling in London last week by Media Molecule’s Alex Evans. And what better way to celebrate those huge figures that you guys have made possible through all your hard work and dedication than by lifting the curtain on the sequel to the awarding winning PlayStation 3 smash hit?
With a packed room in sight, filled with eager games journalists all chomping at the bit to see what Alex and the team at Media Molecule had in store, the event kicked off with slick trailer showcasing the powerful new tools that you can use to build whole games (yes, you read that right – WHOLE GAMES) in this fresh and exciting LittleBigPlanet world including a riff on the classic arcade shooter, Space Invaders.
Throw in a grappling hook, the hilarious Sackbots, the new Direct Control system and a peek inside some of the story-based new levels and it’s safe to say everyone in the room was just as eager as me to get comfy on one of the colourful sofas dotted around the room for a little hands-on time.
Bouncing between sofas and seats, I chatted to a lot of the press and Media Molecule team and the buzz was high; the team really has outdone itself with the ridiculous checklist of new features. And yet, what had everyone talking, including Alex and Mark Healey, was the sheer potential of these new game building features in the hands of you guys, the LittleBigPlanet community. Personally, I can’t wait for it! In the meantime check out a few snaps I took from the event and swing back soon for more LBP 2 news.

I was playing LBP with my nephews over the weekend and I was amazed by the quality of some of the community levels in the ‘Highest Rated’ category. Some of them are better than the original MM levels and some of them just left me completely confused as to how they even created them using the tools provided.
It’s only when you try to design a level yourself that you realise just how difficult it is to create a level of the quality on display by some of the best LBP creators – they must have incredible amounts of time and patience.
One thing I hope they do in LBP2 is to have more templates and complete objects to make it easier for casual/younger users like my nephews to create something meaningful without having to do everything from scratch piece by piece – by contrast they both made amazing race tracks in ModNation Racers with very little effort. It’s great that they are unlocking more tools for the top few percent of dedicated/talented creators, but it would be nice to have an ‘assisted’ create mode to make it easier for novice users too…

In the meantime, I urge LBP-ers to check out LBPCentral’s forums – I believe it’s the largest LBP community on the web and there’s always tonnes of high-quality content being spotlighted there
