Earlier this month I made my first trip to Amsterdam and while I didn’t get chance to visit the Van Gogh Museum, I did get a different sensory treat: I got to play Killzone 3 in 3D.
The select group of journalists invited had little idea of what to expect as they climbed the stairs to a private cinema in Amsterdam’s Melkweg, but soon Hermen Hulst, Managing Director of Guerrilla Games, took to the podium and revealed all.
Killzone 3 picks up where its predecessor left off and it’s a much grander experience in terms of scale and ambition. There will be more variety, more enemy types, massive environments and a broader vision of the planet Helghan and its many terrains. The presentation closed with a beautifully violent video montage of the Brutal Melee attacks, which are the new close range attacks.
I caught up with Hermen after his presentation to ask how community feedback has shaped Killzone 3.
“As you may know, we are always in close contact with the Killzone community,” he said. “The response to Killzone 2 has been fantastic but there is a general response that it had too many ‘corridors’. We have to temper that with the knowledge that many players really enjoy that gameplay style. Our plan is to solve this dilemma with huge variation in gameplay styles.
We had plenty of variety in Killzone 2 but much of it was introduced in the second half of the game. This time around, right from the start every new level has its own distinct feel.”
The level playable at the show was set in an arctic environment and introduced a number of new gameplay elements. One of the most eye-catching is the new jet packs: first you must fight off three Jetpack Troopers, who are quick and heavily armed. Once you defeat them, you discover a spare jetpack that you can strap yourself into. It works like an exaggerated jump, allowing you to soar high into the air and use the forward thrust twice before having to land, and opens up the possibilities for platforming and aerial combat.
“If you remember, the Jetpack Troopers were in Killzone Liberation on PSP and we’ve always wanted to bring them back,” explained Hermen. “When you include aerial combat you obviously need plenty of space so the much bigger levels in Killzone 3 have presented us with the opportunity to include this enemy.”
The story is an important part of the Killzone experience so I asked him to set the scene. Warning: there’s a Killzone 2 spoiler in his response.
“We recognise how important the story is in Killzone games,” he replied, “and we’re making great leaps forward with character development and the quality of the dialogue and the writing. We’re going all-out to make Killzone 3 a rounded experience on all fronts.
So with Visari gone, there’s a power vacuum on Helghan where figures like Stahl, the head of the Helghan weapon producer, are vying for power. Essentially, the surviving ISA soldiers are caught in the middle of a catfight when what they really need is to get the hell off the planet and return to Vekta.
On the ground, this political situation changes the nature of the conflict. The Helghan are now in the ascendency and they are bringing a great deal of new technology to the fray. The result for the player is that you’ll be encountering new weapons and enemy types with their own distinct behaviour.”
Finally, I was told beforehand that we wouldn’t be mentioning multiplayer at this particular event but I knew you wouldn’t forgive me if I didn’t at least broach it, so I asked how much of the team’s energy is going into this component.
“We always refer to multiplayer as ‘the other half of the game’,” he said, “meaning that it’s just as important to us as single player. It’s an area on which we have key individuals working and I can promise true innovation. Right now we’re looking through all of the feedback we received on Killzone 2, particularly around accessibility.”
I came away with so many thoughts and impressions from the event that I feel like I could write a short novel. Head to over to eu.playstation.com to read an impressions piece that I wrote, which goes into more detail on the incredible stereoscopic 3D. Feel free to ask questions in the comments; I have more info and quotes from Hermen that I can drop in there where relevant.

They’re using the same engine as in Killzone 2. Sounds like they’ve given it a huge update though!

I also think that you guys should’ve saved this announcement for E3. You think that InFamous 2 will top this? I don’t really see mediocre party games for the Move or third party titles topping this (Killzone). We already (kinda) know that Resistance 3 and InFamous 2 are coming. So, like in the PS3 commercial : So, whatcha’ got?

@James Gallagher
“Now I can make out that this whole reveal is just for you!”
Thanks, now tell your bosses I also demand access to the latest GT5 demo
In all seriousness I cant wait, the day it got leaked me and brother decided to start playing MP again.I was burnt out on shooters at the time but a good 12 months without one made me appreciate how fun it is,also not going for ribbons at launch means i’ve got something to aim for.
Cant wait until E3.

FIRST DAY BUY!!!
But really they need to enhance the story telling in this game, and make the main characters more BADASS!!. Rico is a fat dude that is swearing lots of time, Zev for a main character was cool but; he needs to do some EPIC stuff through the story of the game in order for you to have a special bond with the character just like with Snake, or Kratos.
And finally the other two guys. Well one is dead and I dont give a damn about the other one.

The story of the game is great, but the way it unfolds is really unimpressive. I was really expecting an UC2 or MGS4 kind of story-telling. Obviously the videos doesn’t need to be that long, but they should have that kind of quality story events.
I don’t know, as an example of what I mean is that in KZ3 GG could show that in some part of the game you are following a Hellgahst Commander, and when you reach some point in turns into a cinematic camera and you fall into a trap, and you end up separated from your squad platoon, also loosing all your weapons, but not your knife. So the cutscene follows, showing how Zev in the middle of the trap with only his knife is being swarmed by a lot of Hellgahsts, so Zev kills some of them in some BADASS WAY!!! and after that you have control again of the character.
62
Posted on 24 May, 2010 at 10:32 pm by Heavenly_king
While you are killing some Hellgasts with some EPIC Soundtrack, you receive a transmission of Rico telling you that the platoon is trying to find a way to reach you, so you have to SURVIVE till they arrive.
Zev fights some waves of Hellgahst that have electric batons and dog hounds; and after you kill almost everyone, the game turn into the cinematic camera and shows that your squad arrives, but only to receive a barrage of rockets that comes from a METAL GEAR!! lol XD. Jokes aside, when zev looks at the mech or a huge battle tank fortress (which MUST look awesome) a voice comes from the speakers of the mech, speaking (a BADASS BOSS speech) directly to you that is when Zev realize that it is piloted by the Hellghast Commander you were pursuing. After some nice chit-chat between the two characters about liberty, war, and some other war topics; he begins to attack you, but you only have your knife; so you dodge and cover.

Posted on 24 May, 2010 at 10:32 pm by Heavenly_king
Then Rico (that is still alive sadly) throws you a bazooka (or the name that those weapons have in the game) and with some cool camera angle and awesome epic soundtrack you prepare to fight the mechanical beast.
64
Posted on 24 May, 2010 at 10:33 pm by Heavenly_king
The camera returns to your perspective and it is show time!!!
Obviously what I have written have a lot of influence from MGS, but you don’t necessarily end up fighting the commander in the top of the destroyed mech in hand to hand combat XD; but you cant deny it would so FU•$ING EPIC A KNIFE FIGHT in first person view in a stage surrounded of mech parts, mech blood (or oil
) and fire everywhere.
So guys what you think of my story telling direction??
I think that KZ need that kind of stuff. Other than that, the gameplay is awesome.
CHECK THE PREVIOUS COMMENTS TO GET THE WHOLE IDEA.

Oh yeah! So my only few requests would be: 1) Get rid of Rico’s voice actor. 2) We need wide spectrum of moods in the game!
I know Killzone is about aggression but great games has many other feelings as well, like suspension, fear of losing something dear to you or just exitement of grand adventure. Many shooters captures these, instead of going from one aggressive firefight into another. Uncharted, Half-life games and offcourse Metal Gear Solid. Could there be anything good within iron walls of helghan? I know helghast has been brainwashed into pure aggression but they are human in the end: long lost brothers.
All I’m saying, less black and white and more shades of gray in the story! Killzone Liberation was the best installment so far, I’m sure you can best that with Killzone 3!

Also James,i’m sure SCE and GG are aware, but please dont show as much footage of the games campaign this time,I know a lot of people who felt they’d seen 60-70% of the campaign before it was out.
A GOW3 approach would be good, they kept it to a couple of levels and the odd snippet of extra footage until launch,it was perfect build-up.

Sorry to repost, but Splitscreen is a must. I don’t care that much about co-ops, but come on! We need good old splitscreen multiplayer!

Great news! Killzone 2 is great to play, both in single- and multiplayer.
Though, I must admit that sharing a couch with friends still wins if I compare it to meeting them online. Please, let KZ3 have splitscreen.

I didn’t buy Killzone 1 because I didn’t like playing FPS on consoles, though I appreciated the mouse/keyboard support it was supposed to have.
I didn’t buy Killzone 2 because it had no co-op and no mouse/keyboard support.
If Killzone 3 one of the 2 things I want in the game, I will buy it.

excited about the game, not so much about 3D…what are they thinking, it’s been what, 2 years since the revolutionary full hd? and now they’re already coming up with this 3D thing :s I had to buy a new TV (plus it’s a 52 inch bravia which i got at a time when full HD was just coming around, it was very expensive to say the least..) just for this generation of playstation gaming..2 years later they’re already coming up with this new thing for which you need a new TV again..i mean c’mon? :s I know it goes fast nowadays but this is ridiculous.. Also, i guess id have to see it in action but im not sold on the whole 3D thing altogether (apart from it begin waaay too soon), maybe they shouldve skipped this part and went straight on to holograms in a couple of years? :d
I get the feeling sony is trying to experiment a lot these days, maybe too much? the Move, the pspGo (what a fail..), now 3D..i dunno, people without an hd tv right now might be interested in this (eventhough real gamers already got their hd tv..) but i don’t see the 3D thing being as revolutionary as HD was..

oh yea about killzone, loved the game, even the short yet epic singleplayer, but one thing a lot of people were clear about are the controlls..it just feels too slow or clumsy..i myself didnt really bother (it takes some getting used to also) since it’s a little realistic, but in terms of fun and general improvement it might be better having more fluent and dynamic controlls, maybe more like COD for example.. that way everyone can enjoy the game, not just the killzone fanboys (who’ll like the controlls in any way, as long as its killzone..)
i actually loved killzone 1 and it’s controlls, but i guess thats too old to compare with..but making the controlls a little less slow and making them atleast feel like they’re more responsive might do good (for those players that play other shooters and can’t get entirely down with killzone because of its controlls..).. however i doubt much will change since it’s coming fast, especially compared to killzone 2 which took like what? 6 years to develop? so i don’t think they’ll change much about the controlls, graphix, engine in general..but then again u never know, uncharted 1 was so so imo, but the second one was a bomb..

Can you patch KZ2 to remove the lock save data?
I don’t really want to play KZ2 too long with risking my save data to disappear whenever my PS3 has problem. I will NOT pick up KZ3 if it has lock save data either. I’m sick of games with stupid locked save data!

Killzone 2 was a masterpiece offline and online, the only things I would change would be a party system for the online and an offline multiplayer like in Killzone 1 on the PS2.

This is great news – KZ2 is one of my favourite games.
But please – in the opening movie for the SP, can you have Rico die in a fire – like blown up with absolutely no possibility of him being in KZ3?

Posted on 25 May, 2010 at 9:56 am by Goseki1
I have a question that’s fairly important as it was the one thing stopping KZ2 being a perfect game, and no other previews have mentioned: Have they changed the ways weapon loadouts work? As in; can you carry any two weapons now instead of any weapon and the default pistol?
Hope you answer this

Just read the first had write up, and understandably it is a little light on details, but a nice hint at what is to come never the less.
One trick that Guerilla missed in KZ2, was including Lean and Peek in the multi-player. This differentiates it from other first person shooters and adds to the immersion. I hope that Guerilla addresses this crucial gameplay element in Killzone 3.

Any news if the developer has been taking notes on the hatred for Rico within the Killzone community? Rico is the weak link within the Killzone franchise & really ruins the overall experience, he’s badly written, poorly executed & stereotypical of some awful Hollywood blockbuster character… surely he has to go!

I LOVE YOU GUERILLA GAMES!!!
Just give us more of the same but better and you will do just great. I would have to see some vehicles, but jetpacks have really got me excited. I really hope they are implemented well into the gritty, realistic gameplay of Killzone.
Please let there be an epic trailer at E3! CAN’T WAIT!!

Please, don’t make the controls anything like the ones in CoD. Killzone controls are awesome and if you have to change anything, fix the lag.
And yeah, no vehicles in multiplayer!!!
I’m really excited and looking forward to the trailer.

The lead-up to Killzone 2 included lots of documentary and tech demo footage about the rendering pipeline, level construction, and postprocessing used to make the look and feel of Killzone 2.
Given that 3D is now in the engine, I’d love to see a repeat of that, maybe sharing the kinds of changes that you’ve made to the rendering pipeline to get 3D rendering to work, what stages you’ve been able to share between eyes, and whether there’s anything clever that can be done to reduce the argument that “two eyes is twice the work”.
Also, of course, I’d love to hear how the shaders have changed over time.
So are you guys doing a reprise of any of the kinds of documentaries that made Killzone 2′s launch so unique?

I love how responsive PSBlog is to commentors! It means we don’t have to rely on rumours and speculation to find out things we want to know (providing its not simply being held back for a more epic announcement). All I want to know is – are any games going to be revealed at E3 that we don’t already know about? Or is that too secretive?

didn’t take a psychic to realise it was coming but nice to have it confirmed. i’m still playing kz2 online from time to time! it’ll be interesting to see if they can improve the great visuals of kz2 while implemented in 3D. i’d be tempted to get a 3D-tv just for this, but will the multiplayer also be in 3D and would it offer an advantage over 2D? it’ll be interesting to see if they can balance that..
as for the multiplayer:
– more than 8 maps this time! there were some great DLC maps, but most games were still on the original maps.
– vehicles *might* work if implemented in the right way (eg. battlefield), or best avoided otherwise.
– more weapon choices per class, but balancing is important. you don’t want to much gadget gimmickery like mw2
– melee with the knife
– i didn’t mind the slightly heavier feel of the controls, it’s not a twitchy shooter like CoD, but for heaven’s sake don’t mess around with the existing layouts!

@hyperguy20
>>More stuff in MP. Vehicles, a MUCH longer ranking system. KZ2’s was
>>over too quickly.
i assume you mean the original ranking?. it was later patched so that there were higher ranks – i have 300hrs online, and i still am only half way to the top rank. i’m far from the world’s greatest FPS player, but my k/d ratio is around 1.2 and i do have about 80 kills per hour, so the top rank in kz2 is time-consuming for an average player.
