The forum regulars among you may know that we have been running a feature known as The People vs: alongside MusterBuster and his colleagues on the official PlayStation Forums.
The idea is to take questions from the community and put them to the developers behind the latest and greatest games. You get the interviews you want and I don’t have to write any questions: everyone wins!
I thought I’d share our latest edition: The People vs: Red Dead Redemption. Below are a few of the responses that didn’t make the final edit and you can read the full interview at eu.playstation.com. From now on, I plan to get you blog readers involved from the very start, so that you can pitch your own questions in the comments.
How significant a role will Auto-Aim have? Will we be able to turn it off and manually aim? (Milos-san, Poland)
Yes, you can switch your settings to free aim in both single and multiplayer games, but Red Dead Redemption’s default setting isn’t Auto-Aim: it’s a snap-to-target system that helps you fine tune your own aiming. We’ve implemented three levels of difficulty in the game that are primarily based around changes to targeting, which is something we have never done on a game before, but felt was useful on this game as some people may want to play it as a shooter and some as more of an adventure.
On the Casual setting, you have a full auto-lock targeting system, making for a much easier experience all around. On the Normal setting, you will snap to a target, but once you move the right stick you’re in free aim. Expert mode is free aim with zero lock-on.
How big is the map? Will it be possible to explore it right from the beginning? (Alwear-23, Spain)
The map is huge, and covers three separate but interconnected territories, with only New Austin open to you at the beginning of the game – but New Austin is a huge space and should be plenty to keep you occupied for a long while.
John Marston’s journey starts in the frontier towns there, and then takes him down into the Mexican border territories and finally, up into the Great Plains area of West Elizabeth and the more modern city of Blackwater. You’re always free to act any way you please, but the areas themselves open as you progress through the story. It’s certainly the biggest open world game we have made.
How does the in-game economy work? (renegadefunk6, UK)
You can buy and sell items in townships by visiting the local doctor, gunsmith, or the general store. If you’ve been hunting, you’ll be able to sell your skins, animal meat or things like elk antlers in order to gain cash. It pays to know what’s in demand within each area. A bear skin, for example, fetches a much higher price down south in Mexico than it does up north by Manzanita post, where there are plenty of bears. You can also buy new weapons, horses, bait for hunting, or maps that will help track down specific herbs or treasure.

Now thats a question.

not keen on the deadeye system above level one, i mean level one was cool, hit r3 go into slo-mo and take your shot, level two and you paste aim over the target then hit fire.. hrmmmm, not keen at all as you can’t seem to aim where you really like, more where the game thinks you’d aim.
apart from that though the game rocks.

I think it’s a disaster for the multi-player part that they left the auto-aim customizable. There are plenty of expert aimers who use the casual setting just to increase their stats, a.k.a. lamers. This setting should be automatically defined by your recent performance.

When will you be releasing Game of the Generation edition ?
I had pretty much lost hope in Rockstar after GTA IV, given how much I loved the previous (3d) games, but this game has just blown me away. I can’t wait for GTA 5 now – make it FUN with lots of distractions like RDR. Bring back the kill 30 enemies in 2 mins with a rocket launcher etc from Vice City and make it worthwhile for you to explore. While beautifully rendered, GTA IV’s environment was soul-less.

@2 and lower quality graphics, I love RDR on my PS3 but the 360 version is technically superior in pretty much every department, which is a poor show for R* IMO.

@stormyuk your wrong if you knew anything about hardware… you know what, whats the point ur just a idiot no point trying to explain it.The graphics arent different in anyway I think the PS3 is slighty darker if your eyes can see it but if you want it brighter change the video settings. Theres no difference between the systems, for some reason Rockstar decided to cap the video quality at 720p doesnt really make a difference to graphics at all if you were smart and had any idea about what you were talking about you would know this and i wouldnt have to tell you. But besides that if the PSN premium service takes any of the free services or anything i use and have for free right now im getting a XBOX 360

LOL I am an idiot? I don’t even have a 360, but I am guted that I am treated as a second class citizen as a PS3 owner by R*. I have seen numerous comparisons on very well respected websites. I don’t have to know anything about the hardware. I can see with my own eyes the 360 version is superior. PS3 has lower detail levels, worse distance pop up, a lower resolution etc etc. Take a look at the digital foundry comparison.

I love the game, generally love most stuff R* puts on the market… BUT (it’s a big one), I totally agree with StormyUK, how the **** can they put out such an abysmal PS3 version on the market, this is the second iteration of their Rage engine. In GTA IV the differences between both versions were also there, albeit not in such a profound manner. It seems that the Microsoft dollars are still doing the talking at R*

To anyone who’s been keeping up to date with gaming news on the internet, it has been made patently obvious that there are notable issues with the ps3 version. It’s still a fine game, one which i’m actually liking more each time i play it, unlike gta4. But it is disappointing that R* haven’t improved their coding prowess with PS3.
I just hope R* aren’t using the same engine for Agent and have instead built a PS3 specific engine instead. It is supposed to be exclusive after all.. hmmm..

I’d like to know why we the PS3 has a technically inferior version.
Not buying it.

Why is the resolution not 720p? There is no way you can expect people to buy this game if its superiorly coded on another console! I say the DLC is not worth the lower resolution, are you atleast gonna fix this?

@stormyuk
you know if you spent less time [DELETED] about how this game looks slightly better on the 360 you might enjoy it. The comparison is so small it dosen’t even matter.

Wait, what? These questions have already been answered, and that’s like 1 month ago. But i guess this is for the people that are kind of slow when it comes to these things.

Yes it’s inferior to the 360 version, but that doesn’t make it any less of a great game. I’m absolutely in love with it!

Yeah , why can’t Rockstar make a version comparable to the 360 version. Instead PS3 owners get a shoddy, sub-HD, lower framerate, more pop in port with missing assets and poorer textures. Not good enough from a AAA dev this day and age considering we are paying the same price. Devs like Criterion and DICE seem capable, why can’t R*?
Sony should be working closely with AAA developers to make sure this doesn’t happen. Poor show.

Great game, but sad to see yet again another multi-platform what is tecnically much worse on PS3 than Xbox, and that seems to happen alot.

I didn’t know about the differences til now. Doesn’t hurt my enjoyment of the game much as it’s just so much fun but yeah I already could tell it didn’t look anywhere near as technically great as Uncharted 2 or God of War 3, games made for the PS3 specifically (and would probably struggle a bit on the 360 without some changes). It has become only the second action game I love playing online (the first being Uncharted 2) and the story mode is fun too. Plus I got the game relatively cheap so I’m not that bothered.

Yeh, lets hope they get Sony on board with Agent to really get the best out of the PS3. I am still loving RDR on the PS3 but when developers like Rocksteady can do almost identical versions of Batman:AA between 360 and PS3 its really time R* got to grips with the PS3.

@funnydude6556 I am loving it
@Fr34kyUK I am glad I pre-ordered it mate, also seems NONE of the supermarkets here even have it on the shelves. ODD! No wonder the 360 out sold the PS3 65% to 35%.

I bet you they are developing Agent on Xbox then porting it to Ps3 then in about 6-12 months after Agent is out they release it on Xbox. No way are they going to develop on Ps3 its “too hard” for them

Graphics aren’t everything, it’s the same game with the same story at the end of the day. I have a playstation for other things (as well as gaming) anyway, bluray anyone? Free online access?
As red dead is based on rage, its an engine originally designed for the 360 so I think no amount of changes are ever going to have it running the same on both machines.
Enjoy the game, I’m still waiting for it to arrive as my mum didn’t post it to Italy until last Friday!
