As you may know, there’s a reasonably popular football tournament happening in South Africa this summer and PlayStation is one of the major sponsors. Also, I’ve wanted to write some retro game features for a while so here’s my tribute to one of the greats.
I’ll never forget Pro Evolution Soccer because it introduced me to PlayStation. I was at an event called Match of the Day Live in Birmingham and I was pulled out of the crowd to play PES on-stage against another teenager.
It was notoriously difficult to score in those early titles but somehow, Argentina’s Butatista (not a typo, that’s what he was called in the game) reacted to a rebounded shot and scored the winner with seconds to go. I won and Garth Crooks gave me a PlayStation and a copy of the game.
I spent most of my time playing four player matches with my friends via a Multitap, but whenever I played on my own, I would spend a lot of time in the edit mode that was tucked away in the options menu. I even spent a summer recreating my school team and simulating matches using different formations; I considered taking the PlayStation to school and presenting my findings to the P.E. teacher, I was that much of a loser.
I find it can be easy to idealise retro games and then be a bit disappointed when you go back to them but the original Pro Evolution Soccer is still a winner in my book. In fact, in terms of playability it’s hardly different to the most recent games in the series, despite the two generations of hardware between them.
And the standard of animation was amazing for its time; the players might not have had as many pixels as more recent games but their actions had a kind of stylised realism that made everything look like a moving oil painting.
That’s my Football Flashback, now I’d like to hear yours in the comments. Which beautiful games live long in your memories? And let me know what you think about us running more retro features here on the PlayStation Blog.

never really been a fan of sports games, if I ever wanted a game of football I’d go outside. But I do like to keep going back to my PS1 collection now and then (when I had room I’d even plug my Mega Drive in on occasions) and it really is amazing how many games have actually aged well, not only that but you can see how everything these days is the same, where as back then you had all sorts of stuff, now everything seems to be an Action game or FPS.

Great game.
A PSN download would be really good.

That’s awesome James. I like this feature! Look forward to seeing more like this in future (Tomb Raider? Resident Evil?)

Thanks very much, I’ve been wanting to do more retro stuff on here for a while. Those are great ideas for games but I was thinking of doing a couple more football ones, given the time of year! I’d also like to write longer features on first party games like Crash Bandicoot or the Getaway, and try and get quotes from the developers behind them. Watch this space!

Excellent. I’d definitely love more of these. The history of Playstation stretches further back than its primary competitor and definitely is an aspect that needs to be explored more. I’d love a WipEout, Tomba (Put it on PSN too by the way! Its a cult classic), Metal Gear Solid, Medievil etc flashback!
Posted on 31 May, 2010 at 8:13 pm by James Gallagher
Hmm, WipEout is a good idea… I could even approach the Liverpool Studio team to chip in to a retrospective feature. Thanks for the tips.

Amazing game but has had an unimaginable fall from grace this generation
The graphics, style, music, well… everything of Wipeout 3 remains my favourite of the original PlayStation. Timeless and effortlessly amazing. How many games can have a plain grey menu background with a few lines of font yet make it look as spectacular as it did?

Retro features are nice
For me, the most important PS1 games are Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Suikoden and Suikoden II, all from Konami.
Suikoden II is my favorite PS1 game, the story is absolutely brilliant and get me into tears multiple times!
I would LOVE to see these 3 games on PSN!

Since I’m forever lost in the past I’d definitely welcome some more retro flashback articles on here, to help me cure the boredom of all the damn SingStar and Vidzone updates
Good to see love for the Wipeout series, its visuals have stayed unique since its creation and it was one of the first games to put an effort into its soundtrack too… not to mention it’s another awesome example of what can come from British developers.
On the subject of football game nostalgia though, who remembers Sensible World of Soccer on Amiga? Wouldn’t mind seeing that or any of the Sensible Software games appearing on PSN, that would make my day for sure
Posted on 31 May, 2010 at 8:15 pm by James Gallagher
Remember it for sure. Do you remember the Sensible Soccer reboot that appeared on the PS2 with cel shaded graphics? We dug that out for a few games recently.

This has nothing to do with this post, but still.
Hello Games is based in Guildford. Why is Joe Danger’s release date announced on the US blog and not here? Seriously…

Lol ‘that much of a loser’. Mad respect for that. But I have always been a FIFA guy myself. I don’t have any early football game memories. But when my beloved Chelsea won 2-0 against Liverpool (to more or less secure the title) this year, I had played the same match online on FIFA 10 the night before and got the same score
Weird coincidence. Bring on the World Cup.
Posted on 31 May, 2010 at 8:17 pm by James Gallagher
I had the same thing happen to me once; I think it was before a Charity Shield. Weird thing was it was a crazy score, like 4-2.

Although I like to play football myself, I’ve never really liked playing football games nor watching football. I find them both boring.
I think my first game was NHL 98, at least I have good memories about it. Hopefully it hasn’t got too many scratches because I actually want to try it sometime.
Crash Bash is my favourite PS1 game. I’m looking forward to playing those minigames in LBP 2!
“Tomba (Put it on PSN too by the way! Its a cult classic)” Oh yeah! My favourite game on the demo disc. Never got a chance to buy the game and its sequel, though.
I’d love to see them on PSN.
Looking forward to more retro features.

I wish I could share your enthusiasm for PES but I own a PSPGo. More like PSPGo F*** yourself I guess.

I feel old as heck when you refer to PS1 as ‘retro’. To me ‘retro’ is the 8 and to some extent 16 bit days of gaming. It be the only thing about the Wii that I wish the PS3 would specialise more in on it’s store. Nice getting things like Gunstar Heroes (I want more pixelled games, was hugely disappointed with Rocket Knight’s rather bland 3D version graphics) but I’d like to see more original ones. If a good old style Turrican sorta thing came on the store I’d likely buy it in a second.
Anyways I always preferred Konami’s own International Superstar Soccer on the SNES to the Pro Evos, though if I had to choose a football game it would have to be Sensible World of Soccer on the Amiga (and played with one of them weird Cheetha Bug joysticks that seemed to right for controlling tiny, tiny people). Then I remembered I don’t actually like football at all so…

I have to say, the Pro Evolution Soccer demo for PS2 was probably my most played demo ever! Absolutely played it too death with my brother for weeks and weeks; we were never all that bothered about football games, so it was a huge surprise to find it so incredibly addictive. Eventually our mum gave into our nagging and bought us a pre-owned copy of the full game. But here’s the heartbreaking part, we got home and the disc wouldn’t play! The tiniest scratch was causing the biggest of troubles! It would be another 3 weeks before we could replace the game, probably the longest 3 weeks of my life lol.
Finally got a working copy and I was in love with the Pro Evo series from that point on, throughout the PS2 generation at least
Posted on 31 May, 2010 at 8:21 pm by James Gallagher
Great story! I too was was a PES fiend during the PS2 days – I still believe that I would have got a first in my degree and not a 2:1 if it wasn’t for PES 5.

The amount of games me and my mate used to play was unbelievable.
But the commentary – oh my God – even by PES standards was beyond atrocious, yet hilarious at the same time.
“Hello football fans, I’m Martin Williams.
“Along side me is Terry Butcher. Hello Terry”
“Hello Martin!”
“So Terry, what do make of the formation England are playing?”
“Well Marti-”
…and at that point you’d start the game and never heard from Terry again!
So funny.
Posted on 31 May, 2010 at 8:24 pm by James Gallagher
Haha, that made me laugh out loud (I don’t abbreviate). Commentary has come along so far this generation, I think. The latest FIFA and Fight Night games are great examples.

This was an interesting article, wouldn’t mind more retro features to remind us of the games of the past. An article about Crash bandicoot 3 would bring back memories!

Truly a magnificent franchise! Captures the love of football
like. no. other.
Don’t mean to start a footie game war but PES, you are still my favourite this gen! PES10 was a great effort and PES11 looks to be a classic PES beater!
Awesome post by the way. Memory recalls like these will keep your fans loyal.

FIFA 98 Road to the World Cup. The most complete world cup game ever-
Who can forget 5vs5 indoor mode! I want a feature on this! For the memories.
Posted on 31 May, 2010 at 8:36 pm by James Gallagher
YES! I have interviewed the FIFA developers five or six times now and every time I ask them to bring back the indoor arena. That and to put Kidderminster Harriers back in their games.

Great Article. What a game.
And would just like to take this moment to let everyone know that Ryan McDonnell (brother in-law) deleted my Master league game save, over a year’s worth of work. What a team I had built to. He said it was an accident. “due to the poor layout of the game saves on Pro Evo” Even after 4 years it still hurts.

I never really got into PES. I played ISS Pro a bit on PSX, but my fave on the system was always Libero Grande – far from a perfect game but when it’s so different to all the others a few issues here and there don’t matter so much. I’d love to see it on the store, but won’t hold my breath as I know most people would (sadly) pass right by it.
Best footy game ever? Emlyn Hughes International Soccer. Amstrad CPC version. Yeah I’m old – leave me alone…

@ James
I’m now convinced I actually had an effect on the result (I also consider my presence at matches part of the winning formula – never seen Chelsea lose a match
), I’ll have to play all the big matches next season (and this World Cup) to ensure everything is won lol.
Maybe I’ll catch you on FIFA 10 sometime as well?

As far as football game goes there is none greater than the Sensible Soccer games on the Amiga.
I sold my Amiga just before SWOS came out and have never actually played it.
I know the SWOS have a massive following still and that the game has been re-released on the 360.
Any chance you could pester Codemasters into releasing it onto the PSN??
I have emailed them numerous time myself, but never get anywhere!
I’ve still got the PS2 version but it’s nothing compared to those cute little pixel men!

Is this true, Sony may be planning to bring more PS2 classics to PS3? (Well GOW collection might have been a test). That is a gamers dream that is, with trophies as well. Imagine playing ICO or Dark Cloud again but with trophies. Maybe even the Bouncer, with online co-op enabled. Ah, and not to forget MGS 2 and 3. Man that would be heaven even though I have them still on PS2.

Back on the SNES I used to play A LOT of International Superstar Soccer.
I remember playing with Colombia a lot because of Carlos Valderama unique sprite and the sheer speed of forward Faustino Asprilla (Newcastle and Parma fans probably remember him).
That game was football heaven at the time.
Kudos for mentioning Gabriele Batistuta (or should I say Butatista) my all time favorite football player.

It would be great to see more retro articles. It would be good if they were a bit longer and also included screenshots of the game in question, it would be good to do Tomb Raider or MGS etc
Good work on this article!

My mate had an early PES and would woop me at it when I went to his house.
Later I got myself a PS2 and when it came out, PES4.
After many hours of Master League (about 7 seasons). I laid down a challenge to him.
He has never beaten me since, on any version
