Hi Everyone, you may have heard in all the E3 hype that we are launching a new premium subscription service called PlayStation Plus, so I just wanted to give you all a quick heads up on what you can expect to get from this great new service so you have all the info before launch on the 29th June.
The first thing to note is that PlayStation Network is still free to join and all the current features will remain free. PlayStation Plus will be offering you a service above and beyond this, including loads of content and exclusive, member-only, PSN features.
From 29th June you’ll be able to purchase a 1 year or 90-day membership from PlayStation Store and instantly get your hands on the following premium features. Plus, if you sign up for a 1 year membership between 29th June and 3rd August, we’ll also throw in a free downloadable copy of the award winning LittleBigPlanet.
Games:
As a member you can expect to get your hands on at least four games a month at no extra charge. Each month there will be a selection of one PSN game, two minis and one PS one classics available on PlayStation Store for you to download. You also get premium avatars and dynamic themes each month, many of which are exclusive to members.
Talking of exclusive, there will also be discounts available on loads of PlayStation Store content, just for members, so make the most of them as these will change each month as well.
Finally, wherever possible we’ll be making sure that members are included in some selected demos and beta trials before they go live to the public so you can be the one to tell all your mates about the next big game they ‘must’ get.
Just the games, avatars and themes alone are worth at least £200* per year, so even before the other benefits, this service is great value for money
Full Game Trial:
This premium feature gives you the chance to try PSN and Blu-ray disc titles before you buy them in a whole new way. We are not talking normal demos of selected parts of a game here. With Full Game Trial, you can download the full game and play it as if you owned it for approximately one hour, depending on the game, before you decide if you want to buy it or not. So you can check out the online modes, play against friends or anything else you’d normally do with a game.
The other great thing is that your progress and trophies from the trial will all be unlocked if you buy the game so no need to go back and start again.
Automatic Download:
We wanted to offer members the speediest service possible so sign up and you can set your PS3 to automatically receive the latest game updates for all the games you play, PS3 system software updates and even have game demos sent directly to your PS3 without lifting a finger.
Just set the time you want to receive them and your PS3 will automatically wake up and download everything, ready for when you next want to play. No more waiting to play your favourite game because there is a new patch or having to remember when the latest system software is launching, let your PS3 do the work.
Details of this great new service, including a list of content available for the first 2 months will be on playstationplus.com between now and the 29th, but don’t forget to get on the Store and sign up before the 3rd August to get the added bonus of a free copy of LittleBigPlanet.
It would be great to hear what you guys think of this new service and I’ll be back one here on Wednesday morning to try and answer any questions you have.
Cheers,
James

First off I wanted to say that i love ps3 and sony and im so glad to see all the new improvements,games, and stuff they have added lately!
I think PS+ is a pretty good deal i mean its only $50 or $40 for a year thats pretty good i don’t see why its such a bad idea! good job sony i hope you guys keep it up and add alot of cool new stuff to PS+ i will be getting it!
As to cross-game shat and party chat i think if we had that the psn would be complete and you would better pursue people into leaving the 360 for ps3 like you did to me!
i have one question though about the plus! will you have to get it for every account in your ps3 or is it for the every account in your ps3 because I have 3 online accounts in my ps3 (please answer!) and thanks

Wait, full PS3 games for sale on PSN Store? Does that mean that PS2 games on PSN is coming in the near future?
But that’s not the question. The question I actually mean to ask is this.
Games obtained for free trough PS+ last throughout the subscription, and won’t be accessible once subscription ends, right? So, will it be possible to actually buy that same game WHILE the subscription still runs? So that, once subscription ends, you can just effortlessly play the game without having to buy the game afterwards, since you’ve already bought it in advance?

I think this is an awesome and reasonably priced service! Don’t think so do the math – the lowest gamefly.com account = $190/yr for a 1 game at a time rental service!!!! I’ll be signing up 6/29th!!!

49,99 for 200 worth of “stuff” sounds like a good deal if you disregard that most “stuff” are overpriced in PS Store to begin with.

I’m still a little on the fence about this, on the one hand it works out as only 83p a week if you take a year’s subscription but I can’t help but think what if the £200 worth of free content ends up being either crap I would not be interested in or content I already own.
Full game trial I won’t benefit from. As many have said why waist time and bandwidth on downloading a large game only to not be interested, but the way I see it even if I would be interested, knowing the PS Store pricing for the game would be cheaper to buy on disc from an online retailer.
Auto-download seems to be the only sure thing but who would want to pay for the luxury of automatic when you can do it manually for free?

Hey James,
what about the German Playstation+
Will it be limited or can you purchase there 16+ and 18+ titles as well?
Because in the Playstation store you can’t in Germany!
If in PS+ (Germany) not this would be really sad!

Hello. I live in the uk and already own little big planet. Are there any other offers to choose from if I subscribe for a year?
I feel like if I’m being loyal to the psn, I should be rewarded for it.

Not sure if anyone is still monitoring this discussion… but I’m curious, as a Canadian, if I purchase PSN+, and I already am part way through my Qore subscription … assuming Qore is part of PSN+ (which I understand it is), how does that work for me?
Do I get a pro-rated price on PSN+, because I still have time left on my already-paid-for Qore subscription?
Or do I just “lose” the money I spent on the full-year Qore?

god everyones complaining about the price and not getting enough for the money. for god sake you are all idiots if you don’t like it then f**k off to xbox. the reasons people own ps3 is because they’re better than xbox we have our own unique stuff im sure sony are working on cross game chat as i want it too.
but what you’ve got to remember is psn is still free xbox isnt they’re scamming people to be able to play online.
im sure cross game chats on its way just wait you haven’t had it for 4 years 1 more wont hurt.

I personally am hyped for the service; however, will reserve final judgement (as all should before throwing a “hissy fit”) until the actual final specs are released from Sony. I blindly throw out my money for three xbox 360 subscriptions each year in my household and don’t mind putting a little into Sony’s pocket if it helps throw more cash flow into the extension of the PSN service. There are too many rumours and not enough facts out about the service now and that is what gets people riled up. I must say that Sony should have done a better job at publicizing the actual facts about PSN+ before just throwing basically just the name and price of it out there. Alot of stuff (not that there was alot of time spent on the subject which I find amazingly dumb) that was touched on could be construed different ways. Sony just needs to go ahead and release full specs and start the subscription process ASAP. I am ready to throw them my money for it.

I would also like to know the answer to Lawati9′s question.
Also, we all know that people from countries without playstation store support sometimes make accounts in countries with the PSstore to access the content and spend their hard earned money. My question is will those people be able to enjoy the full benefit of Playstation Plus?

It really seems like a great concept, and currently I’m strongly considering subscription at launch, but I’m curious. Lots of people have asked for clarification that they have to belong to PS+ during a particular month to access that months content, but my question is more subtle.
Once I have access to the content (obviously I still have to be a member to use it), but what happens if I delete it, or my PS3 goes on the fritz, or I simply run out of space?
Will I be able to re-download any content I previously had access to, even outside of the month it was available for? Or am I now responsible for backing up my PS3 regularly and buying an enormous HDD, just to make sure that I can still play a game that I had access to 9 months ago?
Also as an aside, I’d like to throw into the melting pot, a suggestion that PS+ members see discounts on things they’ve got for free, so that they’re more tempted to buy it, if they ever have leave the subscription.

Hello Sony,
This initiative is not my interest.
I prefer to buy video games and blueray by store.
I do not like the playstation connect to the internet without my supervision.
Avatar one and I am satisfied, for which I need to have other avatars.
Good luck
Best Regards
Alberto

Great discounts? You are getting people to pay for it for goodness sake!
The discounts are paid for by any mugs who would give you money for this nonsense.

The thing everyone is forgetting is that microsoft charge £40 a year just so you can go online and play against friends in the first place. Sony dont charge you nothing for that basic function, your saving yourself £40 a year just by using the ps3 over the xbox. If you dont want these features, fair enough, atleast your not paying to play online and maybe be paying for some features you wouldnt use.
If you like the features of psn+ then its your choice to pay for them.
One final note, PS3 FTW!

Sorry. Like millions of other gamers. UNTIL YOU GET CROSS GAME CHAT I’M NOT BUYING THIS GARBAGE. I PERSONALLY AM STARTING TO BELIEVE THE PSOCRAP 3 IS NOT CAPABLE OF ANY CROSS GAME CHAT. I MEAN YOU NEED A DISK TO USE NETFLIX STILL.XBOX LIVE IS SO FAR SUPERIOR TO WHAT YOUR OFFERING ON PSN+ THAT YOUR SERVICE IS A JOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOKE

Would be nice to have the ability to determine what content is download with the automatic download feature.
Actually, I’d preffer just updates to be downloaded but not demos.

firmware update is rubbish again n facebook intergration that i can gather its a app you put on your profile. and you can upload you pic of your ps3 onto facebook. *sighs*
video feature point less!!
yeah i bought + just for the free stuff and half price content but ONLY just decided too.
ps makin out there giving us somethink, all were doin is givin them money
besides witch way is ps pushin this machine towards??? multimeadia or gamin machine!!
i wanna see some major updates!! this machine has for better spec but its just not quite there, give wot the gamers want.we dont want near pointless updates. let face it xb has a better interface, ie reading deleting messages,sendin game invites, cross chat and all tht was from a rushed designed console!!
instead of pointless rumours n changing your minds all the time you guys ned to get you act together
one more thing it would be nice to no tht your shutting your servers down buy simply letting everyone no buy sending a message to are ps’s with details. instead of people thinkin tht they got problems there end (we should not have to check the ps web site all the time and why should we, after all were the costumers)

If you all look in the terms and conditions for Playstation Plus, when you subscription runs out you will lose all access to games that have been downloaded during the time of subscription (if they were via the plus subscription) but you get to keep the dynamic themes and avatars.
Quote from terms:
your ongoing rights to access and use Subscriber Content after your Subscription Period expires are as set out below:
Type 1. You will still be able to access and use the following Subscriber Content after your Subscription Period expires, provided that you downloaded it before expiry:
* Premium avatars
* Premium themes
Type 2. You will no longer be able to access and use the following Subscriber Content after your Subscription Period expires, even if you downloaded it before expiry:
* PlayStation®Network games
* PS one® games
* Minis
* Premium game elements
If you do not renew your subscription immediately at the end of each Subscription Period, but later renew your subscription, you may lose your rights to access any Type 2 Subscriber Content.

Sounds brilliant, I will hopefully be able to get this. For all those complaining aswell how is this just a rental service?
You get LBP, a free game every month, two minis and one free ps1 game every month (Which are always updating so you’ll always have games to choose from), new avatars and dynamic themes (Which look sweeeeeeeeeeeet). and like James says that all costs more than 40 quid so if you get that over twelve months youve made a massive saving for constant fun. Also it will always be expanding so Crossgame chat will most likely come soon but then you also get to test games before you buy them, saving you even more money if you dont like the game. And when the subscription ends, guess what you can pay 40 quid, get last years stuff and the next years things aswell making an even more humongous saving …

I got my 1 year subscription on the first day! Very good service, I think everyone is ignoring you when you say you are trying to add more to the service. Think how basic PSN was at first and how great it is now. In 6 months this will be a MUST BUY. I’m weirdly addicted to the 2 PSP minis that came free, and next month you are giving me 1 I came close to buying a few weeks ago. Its very exciting. And don’t worry Sony, people are moaning now but the minute they see a Plus user on their friends list with “LBP2 Beta” below their name the jealousy will kick in and they will soon have the Plus sign next to their name!

im so dissapointed with sonys attempt to level up with the other consoles live service. sony knew what we wanted but haven’t delivered the goods.as a gamer using both consoles ( sony : xbox ) its not hard to see which one offers the best service , and im sorry sony but its nots you ! i know its free to play online which is hardcore cool by anyones standards but x box live takes its gamers more serious,cross game chat,sky tv, ign video help guides,facebook and twitter,the list goes on and on ! come on sony
536
Posted on 2 July, 2010 at 6:44 pm by pete_tommo_28
i mean dont get me wrong im glad sony are improving the psn and i hope that they add many more features to the new plus ,it could end up being the standard as x box or even better, the free psn is close to it as is but when you compare what u get for the 40 pound a year plus to the 40 pound a year live i know were my moneys going… x box ,its just more user friendly,you feel more like you’re a part of live , the service they offer is second to none ! yet ! ! ! if sony offer a more stable network,
537
Posted on 2 July, 2010 at 6:56 pm by pete_tommo_28
meaning i dont get randomly signed out or lose the network half way through a game which never happens on live, if they offer free weekly vids about games,walk throughs,trophy hints stuff like that ,get a dedicated facebook service and of course cross game chat then it`ll be worth 40 pound a year of my money

Sorry, but what set PSN apart was that unlike the XBOX Live Gold rip off, you did this for free. Your system cost me a lot more than buying an XBOX, but I thought that overall it was a good deal considering the extras that came with a PS3.
This Playstation Plus idea simply isn’t worth the money, one of the free games I already own, and I don’t waste hard earned cash on Avatars anyway, so what on Earth would I be spending £40 on!? Stuff I can’t keep unless I keep paying, where did you get this idea from the tube, where you pay for a seat but only get to stand with your nose in someone’s armpit?
No, not for me, anyone who buys into this, has already had a Planet of the Apes style lobotomy!

Oh Sony look what you’ve done.
I must admit this play station plus seems to be more like playstation negative
In the video on the store I hear unprecedented value. Yet all I see is a load of rubbish.
This is a rental program we can get that from lovefilm.com
In adding push downloads and updates to members you have basically admitted that the package is poor and so a little cherry has been added. Bad move this should be standard.
You say 2010 will be the year for ps3 yet you offer us ps1 games and some apps ripped from apple. Xbox at least offer premium games. Like sensible soccer.
Cross game chat – answer the question Mr Thorpe
You have no chance in my signing up for this and all you have done is made a customer doubt you. More loyalty on my boots card.
