Hi Everyone, you may have heard in all the E3 hype that we are launching a new premium subscription service called PlayStation Plus, so I just wanted to give you all a quick heads up on what you can expect to get from this great new service so you have all the info before launch on the 29th June.
The first thing to note is that PlayStation Network is still free to join and all the current features will remain free. PlayStation Plus will be offering you a service above and beyond this, including loads of content and exclusive, member-only, PSN features.
From 29th June you’ll be able to purchase a 1 year or 90-day membership from PlayStation Store and instantly get your hands on the following premium features. Plus, if you sign up for a 1 year membership between 29th June and 3rd August, we’ll also throw in a free downloadable copy of the award winning LittleBigPlanet.
Games:
As a member you can expect to get your hands on at least four games a month at no extra charge. Each month there will be a selection of one PSN game, two minis and one PS one classics available on PlayStation Store for you to download. You also get premium avatars and dynamic themes each month, many of which are exclusive to members.
Talking of exclusive, there will also be discounts available on loads of PlayStation Store content, just for members, so make the most of them as these will change each month as well.
Finally, wherever possible we’ll be making sure that members are included in some selected demos and beta trials before they go live to the public so you can be the one to tell all your mates about the next big game they ‘must’ get.
Just the games, avatars and themes alone are worth at least £200* per year, so even before the other benefits, this service is great value for money
Full Game Trial:
This premium feature gives you the chance to try PSN and Blu-ray disc titles before you buy them in a whole new way. We are not talking normal demos of selected parts of a game here. With Full Game Trial, you can download the full game and play it as if you owned it for approximately one hour, depending on the game, before you decide if you want to buy it or not. So you can check out the online modes, play against friends or anything else you’d normally do with a game.
The other great thing is that your progress and trophies from the trial will all be unlocked if you buy the game so no need to go back and start again.
Automatic Download:
We wanted to offer members the speediest service possible so sign up and you can set your PS3 to automatically receive the latest game updates for all the games you play, PS3 system software updates and even have game demos sent directly to your PS3 without lifting a finger.
Just set the time you want to receive them and your PS3 will automatically wake up and download everything, ready for when you next want to play. No more waiting to play your favourite game because there is a new patch or having to remember when the latest system software is launching, let your PS3 do the work.
Details of this great new service, including a list of content available for the first 2 months will be on playstationplus.com between now and the 29th, but don’t forget to get on the Store and sign up before the 3rd August to get the added bonus of a free copy of LittleBigPlanet.
It would be great to hear what you guys think of this new service and I’ll be back one here on Wednesday morning to try and answer any questions you have.
Cheers,
James

Awesome. But I have a question. Do we need to pay with our credit cards or are we able to use PSN cards or the wallet?
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 11:51 am by James Thorpe
Hi, you can use every wallet top-up method to purchase PlayStation Plus but the auto renew feature of the service will only work if you have enough funds in your wallet or a credit card registered

Hi there,
I was wondering if i could buy this yearly subscription using two £20 PSN network cards or if i HAVE to use my debit card?
I’d prefer to pay the subscription using PSN network cards as i have direct debits set up, and dont want to risk any failed debits from my account by purchasing this through the bank.
Thanks.

Hi, yes the PSN cards will work fine to purchase PlayStation Plus

hahahaha think about it we get crap now and paying for it wont change what content we get. Amercia will still get stuff way before us europeans. UNLESS SONY HAVE BEEN LIEING and the content on the store is completely up to them like when content for the store is givin to the store to sell its sony who decide when the content goes on sell in each region.
@SONY why are you giving us reasons to a get a XBOX?

Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 12:54 am by RavetodaGrave_
Here SONY what everyone really wants is to play PS2 games and cross game chat we really couldnt give a flying eff for the rest of the crap you are providing with the PS PLUS.

I personally am really excited about this. I think it’s great value for someone like me who buys a tonne of games, and I know you’ll keep the features updated with stuff I’ll use.
I’d like to congratulate you and thank you guys a lot for finally releasing something like this. Good work, and I hope the features keep coming.

James, just a question: I already own LBP. Is this the standard version? Or are we talking about a GOTY edition with most DLC that’s been out?
I would definintly think about it if there was some kind of DLC offer (or the choice between the game or DLC/another game). Just an idea

Thanks for the replies James.
Do you have any indication on Asutralian Pricing. I was hoping for a worldwide $49 price point. I am sure you would sell plenty of subscriptions at $49 AUD
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 11:55 am by James Thorpe
Hey, the Australian prices for PlayStation Plus are –
90 days – 20.95
1 year – 69.95
Still good value for money

In terms of payment, will we be required to use a credit card? Or will we be able to purchase this using regular PSN cards?
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 11:56 am by James Thorpe
hi, regular PSN cards are fine to use for this

Oh, forgot to add. I actually find the idea of the playstation plus quite appealing and seems to me most the hate comes from misconceptions =\
And btw, the fact they’re not releasing some of the things we have been asking for (p.e. crossgame chat) as part of the playstation plus is a big… erm.. plus to me. It means that if they do come out, they’ll be free for everyone!

514 pieces of downloadable content and counting.
Looking forward to my free copy of LBP and a wonderful relationship with PS+

So basically, we’re getting the ability to pay for the stuff we’re already getting for free such as demo’s and beta trials, and we’re getting discounted on the stuff we can already get, but it’s not really a discount because we’re paying for it already with the membership? Unless you just decide to cut off the current method of the PS Store and force people to buy stuff lol.
Tell me, do we actually pay monthly even if we’ve not bought anything for 3 month? Or does it only work if you actually buy something?

This isn’t going to get a lot of people subbing from what I’m Reading on various sites . Loads are all saying same thing it’s pointless and a waste for rentals basically and no features we actually want . Thanks but no thanks

Automatic udpates should be free. For Christ’s sake, we’ve been asking this for ages and then when we have the possibility to have it, we’ve got to pay for it.
If we’re not interested in the others Playstation Plus’s features, paying just for automatic updates is just ridiculous !!
Not to mention that cross game chat is no where to be found.

Hello,
I have a very important question!
Multiple persons are using multiple accounts on my PS3.
Can they access the content from my PSN+ account?
Or is it enough to have that account on the PS3 active?
Best Regards
Tomasz
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 12:03 pm by James Thorpe
Hi Tomasz, if you hold the master account and download the 4 games per month then the other accounts on that PS3 will be able to play the majority of the games as long as you are a member. Any content purchase with discounts or full game trial is yours to keep and behaves the same as normal content purchased from the store. Cheers

One thing that would have been better would have been monthly ‘tokens’ for each member to spend as they choose.

Umm James no matter what im still getting PSN Plus but i need a important question answered simply so the question is…. When im a PSN Plus member and i download all the content and stuff like demos and full games and themes and avatars, say after my subscribtion runs out will i lose all my content i downloaded or bought?
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 12:06 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, any content you buy with the discounts or after full game trial is yours to keep forever and you also get to keep any of the premium avatars and dynamic themes that are available each month. The 4 games per month available at no extra charge are yours to play for as long as you are a member of PlayStation Plus

All this stuff should be free anyway. This is a Trojan horse you got to pay for. Who in the he’ll would download 20gb games just to try them for 60 min. What is wrong with current demos. Smart shoppers rather buy hard copies as They can sell them when bored with them. Sony don’t like that.
PSN+ is an insult to gamers intelligence. I would not be surprised if the same guy that came up with psp-go idea came up with this plan. Way too one-sided and sneaky by Sony. Shame on them.
And where the heck is the cross game chat. Hire some programers and buy some servers Sony.

I’m glad PSN as is now is remaining the same as this new subscription package seems well rather bad to be honest.
For the price your asking I could buy pretty much all of the content I desire off the store for the years duration and I am a regular purchaser on psn (enjoying joe danger at the moment).
Perhaps if you had a full range of Blu ray size titles, ps2 games or something more substantial like that on the store I could consider it.

I think people need to calm down a little bit. im sure full information and clarification will come in the next couple of days. I for one can see the value in an Optional service. Optional being the keyword there. I see alot of people wanting alot of stuff for free and it makes me question why did you buy a ps3 in the first place. when ps3 came out none of this was a problem but as soon as an optional service is relesed everyone cries rape? come on. the PSN is evolving and all this negativity is putting off people who may want these optional services. i understand that some people feel agitated about certain features but you are doing damage to the ps3 brand. cant we just stick to the facts and at least look at this evolution as a positive and show some comunity spirit or do we wanna become like live and cry about everything and anything?

What a waste of money, for that sort of price someone may as well just sign up to lovefilm or some other rental service, 4 FULL PS3 games a month, no cutting off after an hour.
What happens if I already own the games that get listed in the rotation for this? >>>I would be paying for absolutely nothing.<<<
Now if you wanted to offer some insurance on my PS3 console incase it were to ever break…

I already own LBP1. Why not give away a new game that I don´t have (like LBP2).
I think the service is a fail. I never played a mini or ps1 game on my PS3 (that is NOT why I bought a next gen console). The services like donload of updates should be for everyone and I don´t care about cross game chat but I think it´s a functionalitie eveyone should be able to use and NOT with the help of a more fortunate friend.

When I first heard about this, I was really disappointed. I recommend the PS3 almost primarily for it’s free network capabilities, and even offering a pay option led me to think that the free users would suffer either by reduction in quality of service or because everyone will basically have a lesser experience due to focus on the pay model.
However after spending more time thinking about it, I now feel you are doing this to benefit the free users rather than punish them. I remember reading a news article/rumour a while ago about how PSN would lose free service in favour of pay, and was shattered at the thought of it. But by you doing it this way, you are increasing your income while allowing users to simply refuse to pay and continue free.
This makes me much more comfortable with Plus. The fact you are doing it in this way pleases me to see you getting your extra money, but leaving your users in the control seat over the situation.
Just please never reduce quality of service for free users or this puts me back into the disappointed state of mind.

well let’s hope we finally get some official news on xgame chat one way or the other. truth is i doubt sony will even acknowledge the pink elephant in the room that has “xgame chat” painted on it. is xgame chat a psnplus feature? Will xgame chat arrive with FW 3.40 for all users? Will beta access be limited to games only? or would they include beta access to new psn features? (such as xgame chat.) idk if i’m getting the plus option yet, we’ll see tomorrow if any additional info will be given…

This ist by far the biggest rip-off since the removal of the other-os-feature. I had a one-year Quore-subscription an I could keep my free games after it ended.
I encourage every Gamer not to waste money for useless stuff like:
Live, PSX-Plus, DLC, (Dynamic-)Themes, Avatars, Home-Items, overpriced Movies and Full Game Downloads.
Virtual-Content has absolute no value when the console is discontinued.

So you pay 50euros (cheap) for 4 free games a month, discount at the store and avatars and themes?

Is the Little Big Planet version that you get the normal one or the Game of the Year edition?
240
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 3:51 am by D-Roca
$50 a year ($3/month) and you get:
*4 games every month (36 games total during the year)
*Free game full game trials that unlocks trophy if bought
*Free Beta Access
*Free DLC
*Free Themes & Avatar
*PSN discounts
*Automatic updates and patches
….cross game chat offers me nothing compare to this and cross game chat should be free

So far, from what I’ve heard and read it seems like a huge rip off.
They should’ve done something like allow us to play PSP games on the PS3, or get free digital versions of the games we buy, y’know incase one of the games break. and something like more account register slots, I’ve already broke my console 4 times so I’m on my last one
last time I contacted Sony they claimed to not be able to reset it. Lame.
They should also fix the browser, it still sucks. Have background XMB music, cross game chat, a PS3-to-PC Instant Messenger service, a PS3-to-PSP remote play to play PSP games on your PS3 (or bypass the PSP altogether) and an application to make mini pizza’s pop out of the disc tray.
and Jetpacks.

Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 5:09 am by TazX14
Sadly I think the whole downloadable games part is a total ripoff. It’s outright a rental service, stop naming it something else and just call it what it is. Blockbuster sadly has a better service with full ps3 games in that you rent it for $4, and return it WHEN YOU WANT, without late fees.
So ya, whilst I may get avatars, themes, one year rentals for psn games, and one hour rentals for games, I’m not really getting that much. For the same price I could rent 16 FULL PS3 games each year, return them whenever I want, play and have enough time to finish them, and still have enough money to buy a coke, lol.
Avatars and themes, while nice are super pricey for what they really are. You’re not actually giving consumers anything but temporary products. Subscriptions to magazines like Gamespot or OPM offer similar things at less than half the price, and at the end of the year you keep everything they give you.
And as for LBP, cool for those that don’t have it, but the people who’ll probably pay for this either have it or have returned it in wait for LBP2. I myself have 2 copies, what use is a 3rd copy which isn’t even game of the year edition?
246
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 5:10 am by TazX14
I guarantee they won’t even answer any of this cause it’s all true. Or they will reply and spin it only to reiterate what you’ll get (temporarily) and talk about the “features” that you get on psn that all users should get but added it to plus to make it seem more worth-while. You got Gabe Newell to come on and talk about steam on psn being only possible on ps3 but only but offer features such as automatic updates, which is something that it totally free on STEAM, only to PS+ members…
I love my PS3 but I refuse to pay for a terrible and temporary service such as this or at least until they make it more worthwhile than it is now.

Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 5:13 am by TazX14
Another good comment was made above, what happens in 5 years time or even say 10 years time when they no longer make ps3′s or discontinue the psn service?
You’re saying that a one year price to temporarily own which you have to continuously resubscribe is better to own them indefinitely?
249
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 6:21 am by FallingStickman
Right now it doesn’t seem to be worth the money. I would rather spend the 50 Euros on games that I will actually own regardless of subscriptions.
I like the idea of game trials though, but I’m not paying 50 Euros to try 4 or 5 games that I’m not sure about during a year.
And the free LBP? Not the best choice as many, many people already have that game, so it’s not a big incentive.

Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 6:25 am by TheRime
Next new feature? The ability to change your PSN name. Even for a fee, this is a feature that Xbox has held over Sony’s head. If PSN user Joe decides he doesn’t like his name, too bad. He can keep it, or make a new one and lose access to all trophies, online stats and game saves. Not very user friendly.
