Hi Everyone, you may have heard in all the E3 hype that we are launching a new premium subscription service called PlayStation Plus, so I just wanted to give you all a quick heads up on what you can expect to get from this great new service so you have all the info before launch on the 29th June.
The first thing to note is that PlayStation Network is still free to join and all the current features will remain free. PlayStation Plus will be offering you a service above and beyond this, including loads of content and exclusive, member-only, PSN features.
From 29th June you’ll be able to purchase a 1 year or 90-day membership from PlayStation Store and instantly get your hands on the following premium features. Plus, if you sign up for a 1 year membership between 29th June and 3rd August, we’ll also throw in a free downloadable copy of the award winning LittleBigPlanet.
Games:
As a member you can expect to get your hands on at least four games a month at no extra charge. Each month there will be a selection of one PSN game, two minis and one PS one classics available on PlayStation Store for you to download. You also get premium avatars and dynamic themes each month, many of which are exclusive to members.
Talking of exclusive, there will also be discounts available on loads of PlayStation Store content, just for members, so make the most of them as these will change each month as well.
Finally, wherever possible we’ll be making sure that members are included in some selected demos and beta trials before they go live to the public so you can be the one to tell all your mates about the next big game they ‘must’ get.
Just the games, avatars and themes alone are worth at least £200* per year, so even before the other benefits, this service is great value for money
Full Game Trial:
This premium feature gives you the chance to try PSN and Blu-ray disc titles before you buy them in a whole new way. We are not talking normal demos of selected parts of a game here. With Full Game Trial, you can download the full game and play it as if you owned it for approximately one hour, depending on the game, before you decide if you want to buy it or not. So you can check out the online modes, play against friends or anything else you’d normally do with a game.
The other great thing is that your progress and trophies from the trial will all be unlocked if you buy the game so no need to go back and start again.
Automatic Download:
We wanted to offer members the speediest service possible so sign up and you can set your PS3 to automatically receive the latest game updates for all the games you play, PS3 system software updates and even have game demos sent directly to your PS3 without lifting a finger.
Just set the time you want to receive them and your PS3 will automatically wake up and download everything, ready for when you next want to play. No more waiting to play your favourite game because there is a new patch or having to remember when the latest system software is launching, let your PS3 do the work.
Details of this great new service, including a list of content available for the first 2 months will be on playstationplus.com between now and the 29th, but don’t forget to get on the Store and sign up before the 3rd August to get the added bonus of a free copy of LittleBigPlanet.
It would be great to hear what you guys think of this new service and I’ll be back one here on Wednesday morning to try and answer any questions you have.
Cheers,
James

Hi Australia will get LBP

James why is the automatic update feature part of the plus service? Surely this should have been rolled out for all users as it is a fairly important feature? Maybe a cutdown version for nonsubscribers? One which can be started manually rather than scheduled by time.
However the rest of the benefits look good… just not sure if it’ll be worth it for myself.

I’m still not sure about this would be getting things like voice messages anything to do with the PS2, to be able to download PS2 titles, eumlation for PS2….anything? £40 pound for that is still not selling me. Then to hear you lose access to some things if you aren’t subcribed….seriously.

James Europe has the worst selection of ps1 games out all regions and also get delays with most psn games so do you guys think people are going to pay 40 a year for such a poor service and choice of games when other regions get better stuff . Very unfair if you ask me

question how will PSN+ affect the free PSN will it mean that the free PSN get lesse content
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 4:55 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, not at all. The current offering from PSN will remain free and there are no plans to reduce the service. In fact we are still very committed to this offering and are continuing to work on developments to PSN and now PlayStation Plus

@ James
Thanks for the answer to my question about digital downloads.
Great to hear and yes i am sold on it. Getting a years worth as soon as its live.
To add to that question though…..
Users are limited to two trials per month. But does it also limit users to only 2 digital download purchases per month?
eg. if there are some games appear for digital download that i know i want without even trying the trial for 1hr, can i still purchase the full licence?
——————————-
My second question about comments not showing….dont worry about that. my browser playing up.
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 4:57 pm by James Thorpe
you won’t be limited on purchases, we are offering 2 full game trials a month but if other content comes to the store then there is def no restriction on you getting that as well
357
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 12:51 pm by seany1
Think it’s safe to say not a lot of users will be subscribing from Europe for this especially with how dire our content is and the delays we get hit with . Monkey island anyone

Well, I think the PLUS service, while it does need work, is a good start. I’m already a beta trialist so access to beta demos is kind’ve pointless to me though. I just think there needs to be more features and content. The whole point of having a subscription service is to give people exclusive features.
Do members get to download movies/games without paying extra or do you still have to rent or purchase them?

Would I be right in thinking this will be the standard version of LBP rather than the game of the year edition for free?
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 4:59 pm by James Thorpe
hi, you would be correct in thinking that

if i subscribe at the end of the month, as i have planed ^^
and dont download the games from august, say im on holiday, can i still download them at a later time. if offcourse i was a ps+ member during that time.
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 5:02 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, you can only download the content during the month it is available but you can then keep and play for as long as you subscribe. Maybe ask a friend to download it all from your PS3 while your away, or even use remote play if you have a PSP??
361
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 12:58 pm by Fantatier
oh and is first play included?

Also does this mean the Movie store will go live for those of us in Ireland before 2012?

Kudos to James for answering so many questons. Even on page 8.
I’m gonna subscribe to this service the second it’s available! What I’m most exited about is the try out Blu-ray games for an hour thing. I really don’t like demos at all, but this is very different since I can try the full thing from the start and then get to keep the trophies I may get. I also like the fact that these games will be downloadable.

Thanks! Makes it worth while!!

James any chance u can tell us size of lbp in gbs as mm said it was a 40 gb game
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 5:03 pm by James Thorpe
Don’t know the exact size but all the laguages have been separated out and it has been reduced as much as possible. It’s no way near the 40GB mark

One more question. If I join late, do I get access to the back catalogue of free games or just the ones released from the date I joined onwards?
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 5:05 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, you get access to the games available from the date you joined

I’m not bothered about stuff expiring after the subscription runs out.
I would have subscribed for this if there was a choice, i.e. monthly tokens instead of forced to take stuff i don’t want or already bought.

At the moment I am not sold, I dont want to play ps1 games or ps minis, I have also got wipeout and lbp, I like the avatars and dynamic themes, are they dynamic? If you do something with throphies and auto sync them plus let us be able to change our name at least once a year I would be more interested, its just the ps1 and minis dont interest me unless they had trophies. So this wouldn’t benefit me but if more cool features like I mentioned be added, count yourself an xtra customer

I’m glad you are continuing the free PSN , at least i have some choice there.

hey Sounds good to me! I mean GREAT! people who dont like it dont need to pay for it, its so easy, you get the same as before.
THATS great!!
I have one question, is there already price for Switzerland??? Euro to Franken calculation is always different.
thanks!
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 5:07 pm by James Thorpe
yep, the CHF price is 69.95 for a year and 20.95 for 90 days

Hi James.
I’d like to thank you for your involvement and answering so many people so far (even if you don’t really answer to people wondering about the cross-game chat).
I have a question regarding the full game trials. If I correctly understood, we will be able to download up to two full Playstation 3 games per month, and try them for a limited time (seemingly a one hour trial). Does that mean we will be able to purchase full Playstation 3 games through the Playstation Store, like does the Xbox 360 with the Games on Demand service?
If so, do we know which games will be available? Will there be recent games, or is that limited to old PS3 games? Will there be third party games, like Fallout 3, or will it be limited to first party games, like inFamous?
Thank you James (and thank you Playstation, I was already sold regarding the Playstation Plus even before it was announced).
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 5:10 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, yes, the PS3 games that are available to PS Plus members for the full game trial will then be available to purchase on the PS Store. A full list of content will be on PS.com in the next few days so you will be able to see exactly whats on offer

Very Important Question:
Will we all be treated the same if we buy this? So for example US playstation plus members won’t be the only ones who get a certain beta. Everyone who has playstation plus, no matter what country will be offered it?
373
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 1:12 pm by TriXter11
Automatic download should of existed since the start. Plus it should be a free service
374
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 1:12 pm by fcp10
I think you should offer more things like CROSS GAME CHAT to make it worth 50€!!
375
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 1:12 pm by SolidusDave
regarding automatic downloads:
Will the patches also install themselves?
also, how will this work for game demos, will it just automatically download every free demo not yet downloaded?
What about games I bought from a different PSN account/region, will those update, too?
oh and: do you need a subscription for each PSN account on your PS3 if e.g. your brother wants to have PSN+ as well?
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 5:19 pm by James Thorpe
yes, patches will also auto install themselves and the demos will be selected new demos so you won’t just be bombarded.
I’m not 100% but it looks at the last 10 games you played, then the 10 before that, etc, and so I don’t see why it wouldn’t.
It’s the master account that needs to subscribe to Plus but the other accounts on the PS3 will also be able to play the downloaded games. Generous hey?!
376
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 1:20 pm by azzyere
hasn’t everyone already got littlebigplanet? Is that the only game on offer for immediate subscription? If so, i don’t think many people be rushing to sign up to take advantage of the free offer
377
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 1:23 pm by ClassicGOD
Hi, Sorry if it was asked before but in the situation that I’m a member of PS+ and given game is free but I still want to buy it will I be able to do so? For (hypothetical) example FFIX is free but I still want to buy it so i can keep it when my subscription runs out.
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 5:19 pm by James Thorpe
Yes, if you would rather buy it then thats totally fine

Quick question, seeing as its £40, if i buy two £20 cards from the shop.
Can i redeem those and use it to buy the subscription?

Hey James. Will there be a PlayStation Store for Turkey in the near (preferably very near) future? We’ve been waiting for it for a long time and I was going to get a PSN Plus subscription for my US account but wanted to wait just for this.

yo James,
i will definatly buy this, from my point of view the service is a bargain
however, i would like to know if the store will ever contain ps2 games, i reeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaally miss starwars battlefront 1 …

Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 1:46 pm by dean1076
Access to some content, excluding discounted content, terminates at the end of the subscription period. (thats bull)
think i will wait there is nothing in it for me except to be able not to wait for updates i dont use the rest tbh think too many people will wait theres not enough to justify 200 worth a year especially since i and most people already own a large collection of psn titles
we want more before we shell out our hard erned cash

Hi, will PlayStation choose the 4 games you can download?
Or will there be some sort of list of PSN games, making it your choice to choose one of them to download. And so on for the mini’s and classic games.
385
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 1:47 pm by NSKYLINE34
does this mean we will stop seeing new features come to the free version or will every (good) feature just go straight to being part of the paid service?
386
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 1:49 pm by Xenostar
So the full game trial will be limited to your choice of two games each month is that right?
Or can i go back and play every game ever released on PSN for an hour and see if they are worth buying?

Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 1:54 pm by Rikketikkie
Hi,
Is it possible to put the Minis & PS1 Classics on a PSP? Because when you do, you can’t actually check if the owner of the PSP is a member or not.
So you won’t lose your Minis & PS1 Classics if your membership expires, because they are on your PSP.
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 5:22 pm by James Thorpe
You can def play the minis and classics on your PSP. you will have to go online once so the PSP knows you are a subscriber and it will then know how long your membership lasts for

The free games that are offered each month, can i play them as long as i want?
For an example – there is a free psn game in december and i’ve downloaded and played it in december – now a month later in january i want to play this game again, can i play it? Or is it only free and playable in this month?
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 5:23 pm by James Thorpe
playable for as long as you’re a member

James,
Could you raise a few points with your leaders?
Questions…
1.) Will the full game 1 hour trial period be reduced by how long it takes to download a game? Why not offer 24 hours instead?
2.) Why not offer subscribers the ability to upload their own avatars? If abused, suspend the subscription.
3.) Confirm PSP / PS3 version of LBP. The link is for LBP PSP.
4.) Auto download of patches & firmware should be FREE OF CHARGE. If kept premium, then why not fix bricked PS3′s due to firmware updates?
Sony needs to offer more for £39.99 per yr…
1.) Cross-game parties & voice chat.
2.) Cross-game + XMB custom music.
3.) Make more PS2 games available for PS3.
4.) Auto trophy sync + gamer-cards.
Keep up the good work, but Sony must strive to do much better!

Stupid question maybe.. but if you trial the full games for an hour.. do you also get the usual amount of ‘first jump’ ‘first shot fired’ and ‘managed to find the power button on your console’ trophies you usually get at the start of a game ?
On one hand that sounds like a great way for trophy scavengers, but also a terrible pollution of your trophy list if it would be the case.
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 5:25 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, you can earn all the available trophies during the trial but these will only be unlocked once you purchase the full game
392
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 2:29 pm by playstion3man
James, if you do the full game trial do you have to purchase the downloadable version to keep your trophies and other progress or could I go to the store after playing the trial and insert the disc and get my trophies and other things that I had unlocked?
Also can’t wait. I’m gonna subscribe the day it hits the store.

how do you get the free games.do they download automaticaly or do you go to the store to download them ?

hi, you will need to go to the Store and choose what you want to download from that months content

We all appreciate your taking the time to answer our questions, but there are some looming that you seem to be avoiding. All I need to know is wether or not FirstPlay will be included with the PLUS subscription. Simple answer is yes or no, that’s all I ask.
Posted on 16 June, 2010 at 5:27 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, the current features are as stated in the blog post so there will be no firstplay at launch. I don’t know whether it will be added later at this time

Just a couple of questions here.
Will you be rolling out a lot more avatars & dynamic themes each month, and will these be from the best games, like MGS4, MW2, Resi 5 etc? I would like to know what kind of avatars there will be before i buy, also will the avatars & dynamic themes be free if you buy the subscription, or will they be a discounted price?
And what about the PS1 games that subscribers get, will these be classics, like MGS, Resi Evil etc?

Free Access to PSOne Classics, PSP Minis, and PS3/PSP Themes
Get a fixed number of PSOne Classic games, PSP Minis (bite-sized games), and PS3/PSP themes per month to keep for free for as long as you are a subscriber.
So in reality when we stop your subscription we lose acess to games, and other stuff we get for “free”.
Dunno with others but that is a “no thanks Sony” for me. If that get changed then im all for PS+.
