The SingStar team must be used to sore throats at the end of E3 and this year they can expect weary limbs and achy wrists as well after three days demonstrating SingStar Dance and SingStar Guitar.
They are the two new disc based SingStar titles coming out towards the end of the year. SingStar Dance allows two people to dance along using the PlayStation Move motion controller in addition to two singers. With SingStar Guitar, you can use any guitar controller you have for other games and play along while your friends sing.
Dave Ranyard, SingStar’s game director, stood still for a minute to talk about the latest additions to the hit series.
“The key thing for us is to give people new features while retaining that classic SingStar look and feel,” he said. “For me, SingStar is all about family parties and these new features encourage more people to get involved.”
To give your movements purpose when playing SingStar Dance, there is a dancing avatar on the right hand side of the screen athat you have to mimic to get a good score. Rather than seeing the music video in the background, you see yourself and your friends, as captured by PlayStation Eye.
“I find it great fun seeing yourself on camera singing and dancing and we already know that our fans love sharing their videos via My SingStar Online,” said Ranyard. “With SingStar Dance we’re able to augment the PlayStation Move motion controller so that you see sparkles and ribbons flowing from it. We already have the Video Editor and things like this will allow our community to be even more creative.”
Good music games need good music and Ranyard promises a rich selection of songs tailored to each game; I asked him what the criteria was when selecting tracks.
“SingStar Guitar songs are quite simply those that are most fun to play on guitar,” he replied, “and on some tracks we’ve taken the bass line. With SingStar Dance songs it’s very much about the tempo.”
He added that while SingStar Guitar and Dance support won’t be added to the entire SingStore catalogue, which now includes more than 2000 songs, there will downloadable tracks for both games after launch.
“Slower tracks aren’t so good to dance to, generally speaking, but maybe we’ll find an exception to that rule. In terms of genres we have a broad range, from salsa to country to pop.”
SingStar Guitar needs less explanation as we are all used to playing guitar based music games and it will support most of the guitar controllers that we all have lying around the house. It’s a fantastic way for those people who feel shy about singing to get involved.
Late night SingStar parties will be getting more physical very soon; look out for more details on SingStar Dance and SingStar Guitar here on the PlayStation Blog.

We americans want more song first then we can talk about dancing, we don’t have anything to sing but britney spears and dj Bobo. =(
Just my opinion.

Awesome guys, saw this at E3.
Question though, I noticed in that demo video there are HD videos, any idea when will we be getting these? My Bravia dislikes SD video
…
Also, Dear SingStore: More LAROUX please <3

Well, unless Sony helps me update my credit card information, I don’t think I’ll be buying any updates or anything related, even if they come in discs. I have been calling for the past two weeks and get receiving all sorts of excuses, but in the end, it still doesn’t work. And no, I don’t want to look for a store that sells prepaid cards.
This problem happened to me last year too, so I would have thought this would have been solved, but as I read from other people, I’m not the only one and has been happening for a long time.
I have bought around 150 songs from the Store, almost in every update I buy something, so I thing some consideration should be taken, but no, it is me that has to call, wait, and then receive some sort of excuse that doesn’t solve the problem.

so will this work with the excellent guitar for the game Power Gig: Rise of the SixString (finally a guitar game I want to buy cos it’s actually about playing guitar and it has Layla, my fave song ever on it)?

I won’t be buying until I see what consumer reaction is like and how well supported it is in terms of downloadable content compared to the support standard SingStar has received. It sounds like a great idea though and that it could be fantastic for Christmas parties etc, in particular, SingStar Dance.
I’m mostly happy with the service that SingStar currently offers but the one thing I would love the most is if the PS2 discs could be ripped to the PS3 HDD.
I know that this could possibly/likely bring a myriad of licensing issues though so perhaps each time you put a PS2 disc in, the PS3 remembers what tracks were on that disc, adds them to the carousel and when a track is selected that is from another PS2 or PS3 disc, SingStar lets the player know which disc should be inserted, instead of having to look at the back of game boxes all the time.
I know this has been suggested many times before but I’m just adding my voice to the cause.

Guitar looks excellent, shame it’s not due out till the end of the year. Sure it’s treading on the same territory as the GH / RB games, but it seems like a logical thing to do. And hopefully it opens up more tracks that are available instead of restricting it (assuming the other guitar games don’t have exclusive clauses in their license agreements)
Not bothered about Dance but I have an allergy to cameras, so will happily ignore most of the Move stuff just as I ignored the EyeToy titles

It does look good, but I wonder why they haven’t invested in a Singstar Glee. The majority of the public would be biting their hand off to get a copy.
Seems that the people at singstar would rather shoot their right foot off instead???

wow, I’m just amazed at several things here.
You’re making this discbased? Like in :”oh hey guys you want to play guitar on this singstar song? wait let me put that in, oh no, now we can’t play that song, because it was on the other disc and not DLC!” please, please, PLEASE tell me you’re just going to put this in the PS store or the Singstore, because else there’s not a chance I’m buying this.
Also, I don’t really see it working out if you don’t start incorporating some kind of tutorial modes! Maybe even a little storymode? Oh wait, damn, now you’re just like GH/RB…

@17 Mathlin
That would depend on the contract Konami signed with the Glee people for Karaoke Revolution Glee. The Singstar team might have got there too late and the KR team got exclusive rights, or maybe the price the Glee team wanted was too high, or maybe Sony weren’t happy with just a looping bit of random footage instead of a proper video. Considering the amount of karaoke / GH / dance style games out or coming out soon competing for the same bunch of songs, I’m starting to get amazed that we keep getting any updates at all.
Of course, just possibly maybe (fingers crossed) we might be lucky and the UK rights for the Glee tracks are still available and Sony can release it soon. Personally though, I suspect the only way we’ll get to see it is to get a job in the Singstar team and play it on their devkit – I’m sure Nina has a special version for testing purposes only…
