Hi Guys, just wanted to send you a second post on the details of PlayStation Plus and to clear up some of the confusion/answer some of the questions you have raised around the previous post. Apologies for the length but there is a lot to cover!
Ok, here are the basics of the new premium subscription service, PlayStation Plus:
- Launching on the 29th June
- The current PSN features will remain free. We are still very committed to PSN as a free gaming service and are certainly not planning on reducing this service following the launch of PlayStation Plus.
- Plus is an evolving service and the features included at launch will be:
- Games
- Discounts
- Exclusive items on PlayStation Store
- Full Game Trial
- Automatic Downloads
(More info on these below)
- Membership to Plus can be purchased through PlayStation Store on PS3 for either 90 days or a whole year (365 days)
- Local prices for membership can be found below, payment is a one off fee for either of the memberships and can be purchased with any of the current Store payment methods – Credit Card or PSN Cards
- If you sign up between the 29th June and 3rd Aug for the 1 year subscription then you will also receive a downloadable copy of the original LittleBigPlanet game for PS3, completely free! This is yours to keep and is not tied to the period of subscription
Here are the features in more detail –
Games & Special Offers: As a member you can expect to get your hands on at least 4 games a month at no extra charge. Each month there will be a selection of 1x PSN game, 2x minis and 1x PS One classics. A list of the games available in month 1 and 2 can be found below. You will be able to download these games during the month they are available, until the new selection replaces these.
Once downloaded, these games are yours to keep and play as long as you are a member of PlayStation Plus. If your subscription lapses and then you re-subscribe the games you have already downloaded will reactivate, so you still have access to them. Additionally, if you delete one of these titles from your PS3 but decide you want to get it back then you can re-download from the Plus section of the Store if the games is still there, or, if the game has expired from the Plus section of the Store, then you can simply search for it on the Store and download it again at no extra cost.
Each month there will be 2 dynamic themes, 2 premium avatars and premium game elements/add-ons for you to download and many of these will be exclusive to members only. These are yours to keep forever once you have downloaded them.
Plus members will also be given exclusive PlayStation Store discounts each month that are above and beyond the current Store discounts available to everyone. These discounts will range from 20% – 50% and anything you buy with these is yours to keep and enjoy forever.
Finally, wherever possible we’ll be making sure that members are included in some selected demos and beta trials early, before they go live to everyone, so you can be the one to tell all your mates about the next big game they ‘must’ get.
As I mentioned, just the games themes and avatars are worth over £200* a year and with unrestricted access to 48+ games each year and all the other features, we think this service is great value for money.
Full Game Trial: Each month we will be offering members the chance to download 2 full games, try them out for a period of time (1 hour unless otherwise stated). Then you will have the choice to either buy the game and carry on from where you left off, or delete the game from your hard drive. This is a unique way to trial the full game experience and means you don’t have to be restricted to certain levels/game modes when you test out a game.
The games in full game trail will become available to all Store users to purchase but only Plus members will have the chance to ‘try before you buy’.
The other great thing about this feature is that you can continue from where you were at the end of the trial period if you decide to buy the game. All game saves and trophies earned during the trial will be unlocked and will show up on your trophy list and your trophy level, when you purchase the game. You don’t even have to re-download the game, just purchase and go back to the XMB to access the game.
Automatic Download: Members will be able to set their PS3 to wake up from standby at any time of the day or night, download and install any game updates for the games you have been playing and we will also send you new game demos that will be ready and waiting for you to play when you next use your PS3. System software updates will also download automatically (manual install still required) and then the PS3 will turn itself off again.
Game updates and demos will also automatically install and the next time you turn on your PS3 you will see a brief on screen message letting you know what has been downloaded and updated.
Some other answers to frequently asked questions from the last blog post -
- Cross-game chat is not currently included in PlayStation Plus.
- You need to be the master account holder on the PS3 and be over 18 to purchase a Plus membership but other accounts on that PS3 will be able to play the games you download for as long as you are a member.
- The 4 games you can download each month are yours to keep for as long as you are a member.
- Playstation Plus is for PS3 owners as membership can only be purchased on the PS3 Store. However, some of the content – minis and PSOne Classics – available each month will also be playable on your PSP if you have one. Download them on the PS3 and transfer to your PSP, or download directly from the PSP Store or Media Go for PSP.
PlayStation Plus is an evolving service and we have taken on board all your comments from the previous blog post. We will be looking into these and we also welcome any other suggestions you have.

So basically it’s just a ripoff, the download manager should be free anyway and minis classics etc are a waste of money. Your hardly satisfying my gaming hunger with this offer. You should try adding new stuff for free first to replace the otherOS you stole a while back. Your dragging behind don’t matter how much E3 hype you spin.

oh and i do wish we got some monthly magazine like qore or first playa along with this system. cause if im not mistaken the US gets this but EU doesnt. the pre-order deal for the EU is less appealing because most ppl already own LBP , we dont get a digital magazine and on top of that we dont get 3 months free.
you guys should have given everyone 1 month free so they could get a feel for the service even if it was with limited content like only one free mini or just discounted games but no free stuff.

Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 6:25 pm by SpyDudeFX
I think EU gets the better offer with free LBP, I wish we had that in the US. Can you explain info about PS Home content? When does it launch and will it expire too? Also consider offering Plus members a large friends list like 150 and the cloud storage for game saves.

james you say about dynamic themes and avatars are £200 worth alone but what about people who have bought every dynamic theme and all the avatars available off store , yet again less content and punishing loyal buyers for supporting store . this has not been thought through at all by people that are smart
Posted on 24 June, 2010 at 12:45 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, the cost of the themes and avatars are just a part of the £200 value. It’s the games that are given as part of the service that make up most of this value. There will hopefully be loads of content throughout the year that will appeal to everyone and there will be loads of exclusive themes and avatars that no-one will have even seen yet

Cheers for the post, helped explain things.
However, you wrote “A list of the games available in month 1 and 2 can be found below. You will be able to download these games during the month they are available, until the new selection replaces these.”
I haven’t, as yet, seen an EU list of what we can expect – will this be released ahead of PlayStation Plus launch?

Hi, sorry for the error. list is in the first few replies on the page and is being added to the actual post now. cheers

A list of the games available in month 1 and 2 can be found below
Nope don’t see them.
What do we get instead of qore that the US get? nothing.
Also would want the 3 months free instead of LBP.
Just a sign of things to come US will get it much better.

Just a couple questions I want to ask
1. Since America is getting access to Qore with their Playstation Plus subscription, will we get access to FirstPlay with ours?
2. Their is confusion regarding DLC as it has been previously stated that DLC exclusive to Playstation Plus will not be tied to your subscription but the new PSN terms and conditions state that premium content (which I am assuming refers to DLC) is tied to your subscription. So is DLC/Premium content tied to our subscription or not?
Posted on 24 June, 2010 at 12:54 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, sorry for the cofusion. All the DLC (e.g. Killzone DLC, etc) we are currently offering is not tied to the subscription and you will keep it forever. This will always be the case unless stated otherwise in the description of the content on the store.
The reference in the T’s & C’s refers to a situation where we may, in the future, offer additional ‘Premium game elements’ and these may be linked to your subscrition.

Also get this Blog and the playstation forum working properly on PS3 its a travesty that it doesn’t, nearly a year ago i believe it was Jeff Rubenstien saying it was being looked into, and whist i’m at it fix the browser, seems to be locking up more and more these days (youtube quite often)

+1 on the missing sections (prices and games)
Also, I agree with the free game option, EVERYONE already has Little Big Planet, it’s cool that we won’t need the disc to play anymore but there’s literally no one who to lend the game to!
Thanks for the explanation, I just didn’t get this: If I subscribe a year from now, can I still download the games that subscribers got for free now?
If so, what exactly CAN’T you do after “the month they are available”?
Still on the fence about this, I’m not sure the amount of freebies+discounts for the content of my liking compensates the annual fee. Will stay tuned to decide
Posted on 24 June, 2010 at 12:58 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, we add new content every month for subscribers to download, if you join after that month then you won’t be able to access content from when you weren’t a member.
If you download something when you’re a member and then delete it from your PS3/PSP, then you can still find that content on the store and re-download it as long as you are still a member

Great. Well… except that we do not have _ANY_ PSN in my country (Slovakia, part of EU and NATO for many years). You can not even enter PSN for the free content, nothing. So I am “little bit” fed up with articles like this! This is silly, I want to pay and they do not allow me to… So I have Poland account for the free stuff (but can not pay there neither), and I will not create another one. It is not fair that I paid the same (or actually more) for PS3 and yet I do not have the same service as in other countries.

Do i smell eventual LBP2 beta access to PSN+
62
Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 6:31 pm by Sereal_Killer
@52 i disagree that its a ripoff.
the download manager is debatable but if you dont like mini’s ore cant use them then dont get psn+
and well otherOS technically hass nothing to do with the store it has more to do with the ps3 itself(even tho i agree it shouldnt have been removed or atleast replaces with something else)
@54
i think the US gets a better deal because most loyal psn fans woukd have LBP by now and the US gets Qore(if im not mistaken) included aswell for the first year atleast.
@55
wll i guess you have a point but it doesnt nececarely mean we dont get new minis and new avatars etc, you can always wait to see what th contnt is gone be for the next 2 months and than get a 3 month subscription.

Looks very nice, I think i’m going to buy it.
LBP is very cool too
but please release the prices and month 1 2 games :S

Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 6:32 pm by LarZen
Basically this is just like Xbox Live but with a twist…”free” games that you can play as long as you pay.
Cant see why I would want to pay for this?
65
Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 6:32 pm by Evil_Dr_Z
Yep! had LBP for longer than I can remember, played it last over a year ago.
don’t think I’ll bother ta. it’ll take more than rentals to make me think the grass is greener.

I am excited about PSN Plus but was hoping for Cross game chat…and the following are a concern:
The 1 PSN game you get every month is chosen for us, and that probably is not the best ones as you will want people to pay for those anyway. The 2 minis…well Minis are not really good. The PSone classic could be Little Mermaid for all I know.
The full game trial is clever, but I would not be surprised if very few titles support it. I mean there are only a hand full of full games on PSN to begin with.
Also, yeah you forgot to list the prices and available games for the first month.
Posted on 24 June, 2010 at 1:01 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, it’s our intention to try and pick the best games we can but please feel free to tell us on here and on the forums what games you would like to see and we will def try our best to include them
67
Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 6:33 pm by StrykerIsland
Disappointment reigns supreme.
No chat, a “selection” of games meaning I can’t get the actual games I want, just crappy shovelware most likely, access to my games is lost if I decide to stop subscribing… no thanks.

@61
it iS SAD that alot of countries arent supported yet but different regions have different rules and different publishers for content etc. the same with comic and video stores not being global yet.
even tho you dont want to create another account i would suggest you do it anyway and just go online to buy PSN cards for thar account if you want real(add on, avatars ect)content.

whilst were at it what size will the full game downloads be
Posted on 24 June, 2010 at 1:05 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, For PSN games this will be listed before you download them and tend to vary in size a fair bit. for the full game trial titles we are working with the studios to try and minimize the size as much as possible. Please let us know if you think there is a max size limit and we will def consider this when the games are chosen

Is it really that hard to include Qore!? Is it not made by Sony?
Posted on 24 June, 2010 at 1:06 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, in Europe we have firstplay which is made by Future Publishing rather than Sony and at the moment we don’t know if it’s possible to include this in Plus
71
Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 6:36 pm by seany1
@ 63 i dont doubt for 1 second that u.s will get a great service and content from psn plus but i know for a fact all of us under scee will get a lot worse content and deals , straight off the bat its already happening with scee not including firstplay in psn plus were as u.s get qore a more expensive service in theirs. also we get lbp which costs what about £4 quid these days boxed and u.s get 3 months free im sorry but i will not line scee pockets with £40 of my hard earned cash up front for them to shaft me over the year with rotten content

Hello,
Will we ever have the ability to change our PSN IDs? I truthfully wouldn’t hesitate to pay a fee for that option.

Hi, This is something we can look into
73
Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 6:37 pm by Sereal_Killer
@StrykerIsland
alot of ppl keep saying this but you ony loose acces to the ga,es they “gave” you for free not the ones you buy and you get to keep all other stuff.
i see it as a rental service with alot of free bonuses and discounts.
but like i said before you can always wait to see whats comming up the the folowing 2 months and get a 3 month subscription if the discounted or free extras are worth it or if you wanna try out a game.
and you can always resubscirbe if you wanna play the games they gave you for free again
74

@ 68 with you saying that is enough for you too get banned fella as you are trying to influence others opinions of me when im doing nothing wrong so why dont you stick to your own business ehhh

You seriously?
Avatars and dynamic themes does not equate to £200. He’s talking about the minis, PSone Classics and other stuff. 48+ games = ~£200.

Each month subscribers get access to 4 full games. If I stop paying for PSN+ I won’t be able to play those game until I buy new subscription.
One thing is not clear as you offer new games each month. Do I have to actually download the games in the month there are available or if I was subscriber for let’s say June but I didn’t use PS3 in that month and I would like to download free games from that month in July will I be able to?
Posted on 24 June, 2010 at 1:12 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, yes you do have to download the games in the month they are available but if you delete them from your PS3 at a later date you can find them on the store and re-download them, provided you are still a member

“Local prices for membership can be found below” – I don’t see the prices also where are the games available in first to months?
82
Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 6:44 pm by Sereal_Killer
@ 73 i do agree with the qore thing but i see why they did it.
Qore is a US only things and the psn+ there is a US service price.
the EU psn+ is for more countries than only UK(wich only has firstplay) but they should have reflected that in the price.
i still dont know tho if Qore is gona be a free gift for the first year or if its gona be continued after.
i also think the US got a better deal like i have stated before. i do wish we got 3 months free not only because LBP is cheap now but because most ppl already own LBP.
the SCEE is improving tho and we are getting some stuff before the US but the US is one giant place while the EU is divided in so many different countries with all different rules etc that isee why its hard. but the lack of stuff should have been accounted for in the price.
i am gona get it becaise i havent bought alot of stuff from the store so alof of the free stuff is gona be worth it to me and because i have a psp.
but in the end its your money and if you feel its not worth it you can wait to see what content is comming or just hold of for a year so you have a higer change of getting free/discounted stuff that you dont own yet.

“A list of the games available in month 1 and 2 can be found below.”
Where?
And I concur with the others. I already own LPB, so there should be an alternative (perhaps, some of it’s DLC for free… or 3 months free of PSN+ membership).
84
Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 6:45 pm by BLACK13
i also heard Infamous was one of the try before u buy 1 hour demos, i hope this isn’t indicative of the age of games to trial , games should be new or a couple months old at latest

Exactly! These publishers and companies just think they can take a p*ss out of us UK gamers every freaking time!
Just because GP £ is the highest value currency in the world, they all turn greedy and want to rip us off!
Little Big Planet went on sale for £3 brand new in Amazon UK 2009 when I bought my Beast/PS3. Media Molecule who resides in the UK have sold more copies in the UK than other regions. Now they want to give out a free Little Big Planet game in the UK.
Talk about obvious p*ss taking right in your face!
If it’s a Little Big Planet game+ DLC free, then we’ll re-consider.
If not, I’ll think about getting a PSN+ next year.

@ 80 ArturNOW
from what i understand from the other blog. it has been said you need to download them in the month they are free so you cant download them if the month passes bye as they wil be replaced with the new 4 free games.
but if you did downlpad them already you can probsbly re-download them in another month if you deleted them.
but i gues this is where the download manager will help aswell so it could technically download the new games each month so you dont miss them. but the exact workings of the manager are still to be revealed
Posted on 24 June, 2010 at 1:17 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, Yes is the simple answer. If you have deleted them then they won’t be in your download list but simply find the game on the Store and you will be able to download it again at no extra cost. It’s worth noting that the automatic download feature is for updating the games you aleady have and play

“Plus members will also be given exclusive PlayStation Store discounts each month that are above and beyond the current Store discounts available to everyone. These discounts will range from 20% – 50% and anything you buy with these is yours to keep and enjoy forever.”
Will the discount apply to all content from the PlayStation Store or selected content only? Thanks!
Posted on 24 June, 2010 at 1:19 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, because we are offering higher than normal discounts for Plus members it has to be on selected content only
90
Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 6:52 pm by AcidCrashX
Hi James,
quick question about the discount that will be offered. will this cover ANY purchases i make on the store or is it Sony selected content?
I’d be interested as I buy a lot of content for PSP so cutting the prices down on that would be brilliant.

“Cross-game chat is not currently included in PlayStation Plus.”
But there are plans to integrate it though in PSN+ though right? I mean you can’t say “is not currently included” without the feeling of it will be later on.
People think that this service is for the people who download a load of various content, cross game chat should be for everyone, which is only fair for all gamers.

Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 6:55 pm by Sereal_Killer
@91 ArjanNL
they are determined by them just like the specials each month.
i dont think they want to upload lets say LBP2 on the store and sell it at 20-50% off lol its a big loss.
and alot of prices are determined ny publishers so sony might have to actualy pay them if they sold those games at a discount.
PS im just using a US account im in the Netherlands LOL. the account was created when i was living somehwere else that didnt have a store

i dont see how people dont think this is value for money
you get 4 free games a month thats 28 free games a year.
you get discounts on store content.
everything you buy you keep regardless of your subscription running out.
you even get to keep the free avatars and dynamic themes you get.
this all adds up i mean 48 free games for £40 plus you get discounts and features that will be addded in the future.

why should cross chat be free though , this is the problem with too many people these days always wanting a free ride . CHARGE for cross chat as the other companies charge and nothing is free in this life thats the problem with this country too many want stuff for free and its a disgrace

Regarding Wipeout HD as one of the four free games to choose from in the first month, does it come with the Fury expansion pack?
Posted on 24 June, 2010 at 1:26 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, the Fury expansion pack is available with a 20% discount for members in the second month so that you could get Wipeout HD and then see if they wanted the expansion pack
