Hi Guys, just wanted to send you a second post on the details of PlayStation Plus and to clear up some of the confusion/answer some of the questions you have raised around the previous post. Apologies for the length but there is a lot to cover!
Ok, here are the basics of the new premium subscription service, PlayStation Plus:
- Launching on the 29th June
- The current PSN features will remain free. We are still very committed to PSN as a free gaming service and are certainly not planning on reducing this service following the launch of PlayStation Plus.
- Plus is an evolving service and the features included at launch will be:
- Games
- Discounts
- Exclusive items on PlayStation Store
- Full Game Trial
- Automatic Downloads
(More info on these below)
- Membership to Plus can be purchased through PlayStation Store on PS3 for either 90 days or a whole year (365 days)
- Local prices for membership can be found below, payment is a one off fee for either of the memberships and can be purchased with any of the current Store payment methods – Credit Card or PSN Cards
- If you sign up between the 29th June and 3rd Aug for the 1 year subscription then you will also receive a downloadable copy of the original LittleBigPlanet game for PS3, completely free! This is yours to keep and is not tied to the period of subscription
Here are the features in more detail –
Games & Special Offers: As a member you can expect to get your hands on at least 4 games a month at no extra charge. Each month there will be a selection of 1x PSN game, 2x minis and 1x PS One classics. A list of the games available in month 1 and 2 can be found below. You will be able to download these games during the month they are available, until the new selection replaces these.
Once downloaded, these games are yours to keep and play as long as you are a member of PlayStation Plus. If your subscription lapses and then you re-subscribe the games you have already downloaded will reactivate, so you still have access to them. Additionally, if you delete one of these titles from your PS3 but decide you want to get it back then you can re-download from the Plus section of the Store if the games is still there, or, if the game has expired from the Plus section of the Store, then you can simply search for it on the Store and download it again at no extra cost.
Each month there will be 2 dynamic themes, 2 premium avatars and premium game elements/add-ons for you to download and many of these will be exclusive to members only. These are yours to keep forever once you have downloaded them.
Plus members will also be given exclusive PlayStation Store discounts each month that are above and beyond the current Store discounts available to everyone. These discounts will range from 20% – 50% and anything you buy with these is yours to keep and enjoy forever.
Finally, wherever possible we’ll be making sure that members are included in some selected demos and beta trials early, before they go live to everyone, so you can be the one to tell all your mates about the next big game they ‘must’ get.
As I mentioned, just the games themes and avatars are worth over £200* a year and with unrestricted access to 48+ games each year and all the other features, we think this service is great value for money.
Full Game Trial: Each month we will be offering members the chance to download 2 full games, try them out for a period of time (1 hour unless otherwise stated). Then you will have the choice to either buy the game and carry on from where you left off, or delete the game from your hard drive. This is a unique way to trial the full game experience and means you don’t have to be restricted to certain levels/game modes when you test out a game.
The games in full game trail will become available to all Store users to purchase but only Plus members will have the chance to ‘try before you buy’.
The other great thing about this feature is that you can continue from where you were at the end of the trial period if you decide to buy the game. All game saves and trophies earned during the trial will be unlocked and will show up on your trophy list and your trophy level, when you purchase the game. You don’t even have to re-download the game, just purchase and go back to the XMB to access the game.
Automatic Download: Members will be able to set their PS3 to wake up from standby at any time of the day or night, download and install any game updates for the games you have been playing and we will also send you new game demos that will be ready and waiting for you to play when you next use your PS3. System software updates will also download automatically (manual install still required) and then the PS3 will turn itself off again.
Game updates and demos will also automatically install and the next time you turn on your PS3 you will see a brief on screen message letting you know what has been downloaded and updated.
Some other answers to frequently asked questions from the last blog post -
- Cross-game chat is not currently included in PlayStation Plus.
- You need to be the master account holder on the PS3 and be over 18 to purchase a Plus membership but other accounts on that PS3 will be able to play the games you download for as long as you are a member.
- The 4 games you can download each month are yours to keep for as long as you are a member.
- Playstation Plus is for PS3 owners as membership can only be purchased on the PS3 Store. However, some of the content – minis and PSOne Classics – available each month will also be playable on your PSP if you have one. Download them on the PS3 and transfer to your PSP, or download directly from the PSP Store or Media Go for PSP.
PlayStation Plus is an evolving service and we have taken on board all your comments from the previous blog post. We will be looking into these and we also welcome any other suggestions you have.

Question about Full Game Trials.
You say we can purchase after playing but the wording you use suggests that this is the download version of the game only. Can you clarify whether you can buy the retail Bluray version of the game and play from where you left of too?
Some of us don’t want to waste HDD space if they can help it!
Posted on 24 June, 2010 at 1:30 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, to clarify, the version of the game you buy after the full game trial is the downloadable version from the Store. As I said, we are working with the studios to make sure these are as small as possible but don’t forget it’s realy easy to update the size of the PS3 Hard drive

Seeing the first two months offer, I think I’m into it. They don’t look amazing but promising to me (I already own LBP and Wipeout…).
Stupid question: what’s a “push demo”?
Posted on 24 June, 2010 at 1:31 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, Push demos are the game demos that we will send directly to your PS3 with the automatic download feature

Psn+ will NOT work with those games, i think sony need to rethink about the free games before tuesday 29th
109
Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 7:02 pm by Sereal_Killer
@Peetee36 , @ARMitre
i think the push demos are demos psn+ get acces to before others.
i am liking this even tho i own zen pinball etc i do like the avatars and DLC.

while i do think Xgame chat shoud be for everyone since it was shown long ago i dont think it will be free.
but this makes me wonder how it will work across ppl with psn+ and psn players.
113
Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 7:04 pm by seany1
only things that are exclusive are two dynamic themes that wont be that good as they arent game related at all and 2 fat princess avatars lol ouch thats a trip to burn unit for people who fall for this service

No Sale…
HDD backup online would be an instant sale. If anything goes wrong with my ps3, all my game saves can be downloaded, as long as all my downloaded content automatically re-installing and organising back to the folders i had them in before..
Also, why can PSN+ not effectively be an extended warranty on my system?
..at the moment I feel like I’m being asked to pay for games I don’t necessarily want. I buy lots of PSN titles, but this offers no guarantee that the stuff I will want is the stuff that will be free or discounted.
At the moment, it feels like Sony want our money, but they’ve had to try really hard to think of things to offer us in return.

Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 7:08 pm by Sereal_Killer
@seany1
i dont get why try to convince everyone that this is a bad service.
the only thing i have fomr that list is zen pinball so it is worth it to me.
but yo do have a point that if this was aimed at the core gamers most of those would already be bought by them. (i dont have the money to buy all those things each month so the games are worth it to me.
but i didnt expect super awesome things in the first 2 months tho.

For the “Games & Special offers” you say : “A list of the games available in month 1 and 2 can be found below” where is the list ???
Are all those offer, psone game, mini, psn game, full game, dlc going to be only Sony first party / published games ?
Because for now the only game you have talk about are all first party or published by sony, wipeout hd, infamous, littlebigplanet.
One week from launch and we dont know what we are going to have for our subscription… You talk about full game trial, but cant even name the first few games.
You talk about “A list of the games available in month 1 and 2 can be found below” but you dont even show this list…
Its really look like Sony dont know what is going to offer to PSN+ subscriber! We want name ! Full list of what to expect !

seany1 if your not going to subscribe thats fine but you dont have to constantly comment over and over again saying how rubbish it is and calling everyone who is going to subcribe to it fools it acheives nothing and is just annoying
thank you

If the offer game was ModNations instead of LBP (everyone has this awesome game). I would buy it day 1…
I have almost everything you guys are offering on the first 2 months… so no PS + for me… at least for now.
127
Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 7:16 pm by Kung_Fu_Russ
Modnation is too new, Luis_FFgamer. They will only ever offer older titles for ‘free’. It makes no sense to give new titles for free, but they may well offer discounts on new titles, if it promotes sales.

yea i do agree LBP is in theory a good choice but in practive 99% of us already own it. they should have just given us 3 months free.
and there is no way you get a new games that still at 60euroes value for free lol. that would be a huge loss

How I can use Plus when the Store is not available in my country?
Posted on 24 June, 2010 at 1:38 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, unfortunately Plus can only launch in coutries with a Store, however we are always working to add new Stores so hopefully this will be available for you soon
134
Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 7:19 pm by BLACK13
would be better to have say 20% off any 2.99 or under content or say 50% of any 1 9.99 to 14.99 rather than limit it to predifined titles this service needs more choice
135
Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 7:20 pm by Topov81
Disappointed. Nothing to tempt those of us who’ve bought many PSN games already. Reading through the list of month 1 & 2 content, I already have :
LittleBigPlanet
Wipeout HD
Zen Pinball
Shatter
Age of Zombies
Infamous
Flower
Mushroom Wars
Super Stardust HD
Heavy Rain
Modnation Racers
Maybe I should NOT buy new games in the hope that they’ll be including in future PSN+ updates.
Posted on 24 June, 2010 at 1:39 pm by James Thorpe
Hi Topov81, is there a list of games you would liek to see? If so, let us know and we will do our best to include them in the future

Will cloud storage for saves ever be made a part of this?
137
Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 7:24 pm by malebolgi
@ 124 & 126 yes ok just saw the list ! thx.
But it kind of confirm what i fear, it look like its going to be only Sony first party/published stuff, so how long before they dont have any good content…
They allready have to go back to all stuff to fill in the list… But i like the premium game element ! KZ2 map pack first month and motorstorm map pack for the second :O
But i allready have kz2 map pack!
And its going to be the problem if its only Sony content, because alot of us own that allready.
And the Full game trial, for PSN game, its basicly like xbox live where every arcade game have a demo before purshase…
Since it look like Sony is going to use only Sony content, they should have added a free sony movie every month or a discount for drama, scifi, and so on every month !
138
Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 7:26 pm by Sereal_Killer
@137 still the same problem.
you cant discount games if the publishers doesnt allow it.
so if konami is selling lets say MGS2 at 19.99
and sony decides to give you 50% discount that means that sony would have to pay konami 9.99 eacht time because the game would have sold for 19.99.
for sony games this is another story tho.
but in real life it never happens that its really 50% discount on everything lol. its a big loss if they decide to relaase a new game on psn this way and may actualy push them to no release it on psn since the would get more money by selling it in a normal store.

Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 7:27 pm by stormyuk
@131 so they can mug as many people into getting PSN+ as possible. Looks like we wont ever see new features on the standard PSN now which is a real shame, everything will be driven into PSN+ to make us pay.
Posted on 24 June, 2010 at 1:41 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, its important to note that we are still very committed to PSN as a free service as well as the new Plus. We understand that we have a great free service already and will continue to develop this and Plus in parallel
140
Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 7:28 pm by Arion87
This contradicts the new PSN terms and conditions which state
Type 1: Premium Avatars and Themes, which, so long as you download when originally available you can re-download after you end your subscription.
Type 2: PSN games, PS1 games, Minis and “Premium Game Elements” which we assume is a fancy word for DLC. This, as you’d expect, will no longer be accessible for use after your subscription period expires, even if you downloaded it before expiry.
Posted on 24 June, 2010 at 1:44 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, all DLC on Plus is yours to keep forever. We added ‘premium game elements’ to the t’s & c’s as we will hopefully be giving members other game content that may be linked to your subscription

Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 7:28 pm by BLACK13
going by first 2 months , i’d be paying 11.99 for a few avatars , the odd dynamic theme and the vague hope a beta may be around the corner , very disappointed
142
Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 7:28 pm by seany1
@ 140 im sorry but you are constantly hounding me for my views which is something i could easily report you for but i wont as im bigger than that . when do i ever mention any other psn users name like you have with me time and time again , i dont simple as that as im not ramming my views down any users throats im stating things over and over with my views so scee get the point that loyal customers like myself are not happy with this psn plus alienating core gamers like me just coz i have bought over 50 of the best psn games and 11 ps1 classics and 5 minis also have bought all dynamic themes and avatars available m8 so im well and truly alienated from this service which im not happy about
143
Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 7:30 pm by Sereal_Killer
@141 that is the problem with any service. you always risk not getting what you want , so you have to decide if the content is gona be worth it to you.
its ezier for sony to do this with their own content becuase they control their own proces other content prices are not determined by sony.
i like the video idea tho but for counties without a vide service it would suck unless they put it on the store.
but this again has problems because they rights to the videos are different per country >.>
144
Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 7:30 pm by JoystickJedi
I’m also disappointed by the offering- free LBP is a poor choice for your target market and the plan for month 1 and 2 is just not compelling in the slightest
145
Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 7:33 pm by Sereal_Killer
@144 stormyuk
i do think that small features will be for all psn users but you are right in thnking that big features will be only for plus memebers. it might sound unfair but sony needs money to make these services so its only logical.
but on the otherhand as a paying costumer our voices have more power because we can say that we pay for this so we expect more.
in the past we could ask for more but they could just say hey its free just be happy you have this at all.
sony is a company and that means making money

Having seen the contents of the first 2 months, I already have most, and the rest are things I wouldn’t want to go near….
and really? Is it meant to be a special thing that it can push a demo of a game I downloaded the demo ages ago?
Sorry, no sale after all.

You seem to have forgotten to post the prices.
Also, this doesn’t use PlayStation 3′s subscription feature like FirstPlay does? With FirstPlay the subscription is automatically renewed unless cancelled. Do I need to manually renew my PlayStation Plus subscription? If this is the case then I’d far rather it be automatic to be honest.
Posted on 24 June, 2010 at 1:47 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, sorry for the error, the lists are in my comments on the 1st page and will be added to the post ASAP.
Regarding the subscription to Plus there is an automatic renewal feature that is set to ‘on’ when you purchase Plus, but this can easily be turned off if you don’t want it

Not sold for the first few months as i already have wipeout HD, i don’t like LBP, 90% of the minis don’t interest me. Not speaking for everyone its just my opinion.
I shall wait to see if this improves any more. I agree with all who say we should have an alternative to LBP, if i was to try it i’d rather have 3 months free than LBP.
I’ve been using my PC more for the last 4-5 months anyway so we shall see.

Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 7:37 pm by stormyeu
@151 Agreed, I can understand it but call me a cynic but if we start seeing all the blog share features going into PSN+ I will be very disappointed. One of the reasons I got a PS3 instead of a 360 was because PSN was always touted by Sony as being FREE. Seems now they are starting to get a settled user base the FREE means we wont be getting much improvement which is a shame.
Posted on 24 June, 2010 at 1:49 pm by James Thorpe
Hi, we are still very committed to the free offering of PSN as we recognise it as one of our key usp’s. we will continue to develop free PSN but we also wanted to offer a premium service to those who want it

Posted on 23 June, 2010 at 7:37 pm by ARMitre
This is what I would add to the PSN+, looking at the current offer. I’m not going to mention cross-game chat, PS2 emulation or things of the like, just following the line it looks Sony is having:
· A couple of film rentals per month – only this would be a huge success for the money paid.
· 20% discount on every item on the PSN Store for PSN+ subscribers, 50% only to a small selection (seriously, current discount system on PSN+ has been the biggest let down for me… very very very little to choose from. Lower prices lead to more purchases, I’m sure profit will increase)
· Some PS Home articles (now few people use it, if things are offered, more people will use it and interest on the platform will increase)
· Finally, of course PSN+ must evolve, this is nice to begin with, but I’m sure every PS3 owner expected much more of it…
