The greatly anticipated SingStar summer update is here, and boasts a whole array of great new SingStar features for you to get your teeth into.
The update allows players to compete in an Online Battle against their friends. If you and a friend own the same song, get your mics ready, send them an invitation and let your SingStar battle commence!
You can now create playlists on your PSP with SingStar Remote so that your SingStar party never gets interrupted, and get feedback on your natural vibrato when you sing with true professional style.
Many of you are keen to know more about SingStar Dance and SingStar Guitar, which will be launching later this year. Dave Ranyard, SingStar’s Game Director has kindly taken some time out from his busy schedule to answer some questions about both titles.
If you want to know more about either of the games, feel free to leave a question on this post for Dave and the team to answer.
Will I have to buy all my SingStore songs again to play SingStar Guitar and SingStar Dance?
You will be able to upgrade your existing SingStore songs to be compatible with both titles for less than the cost of a full song. We will be rolling out song upgrades in our regular SingStore updates. Pricing will be confirmed nearer to launch.
How many people can play SingStar Dance and SingStar Guitar?
Up to four people at any time can play – two singers and two dancers, or two singers and two guitarists.
You won’t be able to play Dance and Guitar at the same time.
Do I need to have the PlayStation Move motion controller to play SingStar Dance?
You can play SingStar Dance as a normal SingStar, with two microphones. You only need PlayStation Move controller for each person who wishes to dance, one Move controller per dancer.
Will SingStar Dance and SingStar Guitar have the same My SingStar Online features as a regular SingStar game?
Yes, all the online features remain the same, including Online Battle! We can’t wait to see all those great videos and snapshots of the community dancing and performing, doing what they do best.
Can I buy the SingStar Dance and SingStar Guitar disc and just play it like a regular SingStar game?
Yes, players can choose only to sing, removing the other elements from it.
When playing SingStar Dance do you only see the live camera feed or can you choose to have the artist video?
As with SingStar and PlayStation Eye, you can choose to display either a camera feed on-screen, or display the artist video in the background, so no change there. We have added a quick change button so that you can switch between the camera’s live feed and the artist video.
Will the features be downloadable or unlockable from the SingStore like the SingStar Video Editor, or will they be patched in?
We are always planning new features in the SingStore Extras section, so please watch this space.

I’ve got to be honest I’m a big Singstar fan but the new addons don’t interest me at all. Singstar is all about singing dancing games are for dancing and guitar games are for guitars. There are very few songs where I can see all three being warrented.
Guitar Hero is a guitar game it doesn’t offer singing.
Rock Band is a band and singing game it doesn’t offer dancing.
Dance Dance Revolution is a dancing game it doesn’t offering singing or guitar.
I feel Singstar is getting away from its comfort zone and adding adds on for the sake of Playstation Move.
Singstar developers should be taking more time to improve on the current product. Further enhancing online capabilities, song libraries and enhancing singing systems (rap scoring is still rubbish!).

Hi phantomfish,
The choice is yours of course, if all you want to do is sing then all the new discs and songs can be played just as a singing game, without selecting the additional gameplay elements.
We’ll continue to add great songs to the SingStore that will always work if the player only chooses to sing.
Hope you continue to enjoy SingStar!

The only feature Singstar REALLY needs is to be able to dump all the songs from the Singstar discs you already own on to the hard drive. Swapping discs all the time is a pain when people want to sing different songs.
I understand there is licensing issues, etc. but can’t there be some sort of check when you start up Singstar? Something like inserting all your other Singstar discs at the beginning as a security check before you are allowed to use one of the discs songs from the hard drive? I hope that makes sense.

Will i have to buy Singstar Dance & Singstar guitar to play converted exisitng songs or will i be able to patch my existing singstar game?
Posted on 8 July, 2010 at 3:34 pm by Nina Scherer
Hi Mkwone,
You will be able to upgrade existing songs from the store (only if Dance/Guitar is available for them of course).
Cheers,
Nina

@SyncroUK I’m 100% with you on that issue.
Another way to ensure you own the discs is to send the disc or their serial number back to Sony and then Sony should make them available for download to you. You should verify your Identity with a one time code.
I’m against the fact that we have to pay an upgrade fee for songs we have already purchased. Guitar Hero and Rock Band have added features to their games and they didn’t ask for an upgrade fee. Please reconsider this as it’s unfair to all us loyal fans of the game.
The PSP feature is my favourite.
Well done.

“You will be able to upgrade your existing SingStore songs to be compatible with both titles for less than the cost of a full song”
Is this a one off fee/download for all the SingStore tracks we have purchased or is this a per track basis purchase?
I.E. I have Lady Gaga Bad Romance and Snow Patrol Chasing Cars
2 songs that came into my head first don’t mention how Chasing Cars wouldnt necessarily work well with Dance lol)
Will I have too pay a fee for both tracks or just a one time only fee?
“We will be rolling out song upgrades in our regular SingStore updates”
Does this mean old SingStore tracks will be used as Filler for smaller updates making them look bigger than they actually are? Basically will it hinder getting more NEW Tracks on the Store? Or will they be treated as seperate updates within the same Brand Update, like Both come out on Weds Both on Store same time etc but one lists the Upgraded songs, and one lists the real new additions.
Thanks in advance.
Posted on 8 July, 2010 at 4:00 pm by Chris Bruce
Hi BlaizeK,
There will be a cost per add-on.
The add-ons are on a per-track basis, some songs may suit dance, and some guitar, or both even!
This won’t hinder getting new tracks on the store, and we’ll plan to release new tracks with their add-ons at the same time where possible.
Hopefully this makes it clear!
Thanks!

I agree with mJ_mSv – I would like it so you can play with anyone worldwide versus being limited to people on your friends list. I don’t have any friends with singstar therefore I now really can’t use this online battle feature.
If anyone wants to add me feel free as i’m online fairly often and have tons of downloaded tracks – i’m dying to give it a whirl!
Posted on 8 July, 2010 at 6:04 pm by Chris Bruce
Sounds like its the perfect opportunity to make some new friends or join some new clubs! Good luck finding other online battlers!

Thanks Chris for answering those.
I’m gonna reserve judgement on having to pay for Dance/Guitar “Upgrades” until the price of “Upgrading” Tracks I already have is given.
Could be a Good “Meh thats not too bad” or a bad “OMG HOW MUCH?!?!” lol. So I’m gonna wait til London Studios is ready to divulge this info
And I’m glad to hear it wont hinder Regular SingStore updates

No problem, BlaizeK – watch this space for further info! Enjoy the new features in the meantime…

Upgrading for guitar or dance costs money? What a terrible way to treat your loyal customers.
Any news on the locks on the new songs in the store?

Just a few things:
1. I understand that if we have already a song we can upgrade it for the move function, paying something extra. But what about the new songs that you will upload to the singstore, they are gonna remain the same price as now? is there gonna be an option for just to buy the kareoke song( or now when we buy a song, are we buying for move, guitar and koreoke function) ?
2. Are you thinking in have some bundles like: camara+move+game or the big one camara+move+WIRELESS mics+newgame?
3. just for feedback, the psp control system is great! but it would be perfect if we can “rid” of the ps3 controller and only use the psp for navigation for example after a song ends.(‘cus after finish a song i have to press x in my ps3 controller to play next song, i think is kinda frustating still have to use both controlers it’s not practical in my point of view) please consider it!
4.haha i just can’t stop asking this song: I gotta feeling-Black eyed peas. please make it happen.
cheers…and netherlands world cup champion.

I’m guessing if separate Dance or Guitar tracks are released on the SingStore that the will cost more than the normal tracks. Am I right?
Looks like it’s going to be an expensive time with the Playstation. Song upgrades, Singstar Dance and Guitar and Playstation Move. Let’s hope my Playstation Plus account can help with some of that.

Can you add a Youtube feature were you can upload your videos to youtube?

suncroUK – I’m with you!
I would even consider paying a fee for every dumped song, or some check at the begining of the game. That would make life so much easier!

Yet another update has gone by without implementing a simple ability to select which discs you own and have all your songs shown on the carousel. It has been said that there are legal issues involved in getting permission to allow people to format-shift from the discs to the hard drive (though we know that this is not an insurmountable problem as Harmonix have managed to implement this feature without a problem in Rock Band – and given that Sony owns the rights to many of the songs on these discs anyway, it doesn’t seem beyond the wit of man to implement the same feature for a small, fair fee), but a simple checklist would take very little time to code and test, and would answer the prayers of your most loyal customers – those who have bought and continue to buy the most discs. It’s a really quick win.
The PSP functionality, while great, is also crippled by not being able to queue up songs which are not on the disc in the drive.
I don’t want to be cynical, but it’s almost as if Sony are unwilling to implement such a simple feature because they would rather people buy the songs that they already own again from the Singstore. But Sony wouldn’t act like that would they?

In the video is shown 2 players on the same console playing against other 2 same console players online. So it can be played 2 vs 2 online?
I haven’t tried it yet.

Dear Chris,
These updates are great (especially the vibrato one).
However, there is onle little quirk that I would really want to see fixed. Because of its gameplay mechanics Singstar is well suited to be used with the PS3 remote, but it is not as straightforward as it could be. As now, it seems that the “OK” button on the remote has the functionality of the “circle” button (back/cancel) instead of the cross button (select). This causes a lot of unwanted cancels with people who are not familiar with the game.
I think this quirk would be quite straightforward to fix, and it would enhance greatly our Singstar experience at a minimal cost.
Thanks for your time, and best regards.

Disc Based songs – could we not just import the name/title and thumbnail image into the carousel, but then still require the disc to play it? Therefore, we still need the disc to ‘play’ the song, but all titles can be browsed via the PSP/main carousel.
A nice touch would be for the game to say which disc to load in next i.e.
Next up.. Artist/Song
Please insert Singstar: Popworld
Not rocket science, and still retains the ‘must own disc to play it’.
The PSP function – brilliant, speeds up the choice so the fun is never interrupted!
Now just let it see my entire Singstar Catalogue!!!!

it would be good to see if we can have more than one player singing at the same time- would be good also to see others who are playing as so if we wish we could add as friends so we play with more people..also does it allow for disc changing to the playstation 2 singstars or is it only compatiable for the singstar3 discs…otherwise i really like it..

Couldn’t agree more with the comments about either importing disc based songs (PS2 and PS3 discs), or at the very least being able to tick the disc you own and all the songs appear in the main menu with a insert this disc option. we’ve got a bout 10 discs now and this would make playing the game much more user friendly.
As has already been pointed out, it’s being done already with Rockband

Hey, do the online battles also count for the “In It To Win It – Play 200 songs in Battle mode” trophy?
If they do, I’ll continue with online battles only. I Love it
Short additional offtopic question: I’m thinking about a Sony AINO, which can be used for remote play. Can I use the Singstar playlist option with it?
Thanks for the good job!
