Hello all,
Here’s something you might not know. I write these weekly blog posts on Friday, so the Sony team can check I’ve not gone completely mad before putting it live on a Tuesday. Something I just thought I’d mention before moving into my usual topical intro. So, did you all see the World Cup on Sunday? Great/awful, wasn’t it? I’m glad that Spain/Holland won. That David Villa/Wesley Sneijder, eh? Quite the player.
Even better than the World Cup final I’ve definitely already watched is this week’s FirstPlay, which hits the Store on Wednesday. This week we have a behind the scenes look at Killzone 3, in which we go hands on with the game and also talk to the lovely folk at Guerrilla Games, plus a preview of scuzzed-up crime shooter, Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days.
We’ve also got a reviews round-up of recent releases, including Alpha Protocol and Pure Football (you’ll probably be unsurprised to hear it hasn’t replaced FIFA during our lunchtime gaming sessions). Then in our network highlights section we’ve got a look at the best racers available on PSN, including WipEout HD and PixelJunk Racers, a round-up of PSone classics, the best of your LittleBigPlanet levels and a huge guide to making money in Red Dead Redemption. And not just by shooting people. How inventive of us.
Of course we’ve also got our screenshot galleries, this week including the latest on Driver: San Francisco, Red Faction: Armageddon, Shaun White Skating and Marvel Vs Capcom 3: Fate Of Two Worlds. All of this comes at our regular, tiny price of 99p, or even less if you take out a 90-day subscription for £8.99. Which all your cool friends already have.
We’d love to hear any feedback, suggestions for content, or algorithms for predicting sporting events, and you can get in touch with us on Twitter at @firstplay_uk, FirstPlay@futurenet.com, or the official EU forums.
See the Future of PS3. First.

Does it have any decent exclusive downloadable content, or are they still running with that crap 2 month old Back Breaker demo that nobody in the UK gives a monkeys about!

Let me guess and the exclusive backbreaker demo ” yawn”.

Ah a Killzone 3 preview and sitdown with Guerrilla Games, that’s more like it FirstPlay! That’s the sort of fresh up-to-date content people will be happy to pay for (assuming it’s original and not a rehash of the E3 stuff), you’ll still get people missing the point of FirstPlay entirely and wondering where the freebies are though…

This should be included in ps+.
Who is Wesley Schneider btw? Is he German?

I fail to see how PixelJunk Racers can be considered among the ‘best racers’ even on PSN. It’s just not fun especially with Wipeout HD and especially Burnout Paradise available on the store too.

Nathan, Third paragraph, “Pixuljunk racers”?
Pixeljunk racers.

Apnomis I know that Firstplay is a magazine style review thing, but each month it’s not really offering anything you can’t get off the web for free, except for the annoying voice over, when I first subscribed it was decent, but the last 2 months it’s really gone downhill, they totally missed everything E3, you’d have thought they could have had some footage on there or something, but nope! Also, I’m not annoyed that they don’t have anything new in the downloads option besides a demo you could get off 360 live over 2 months ago, that they’ve been giving away for the last 4 weeks, it’s made from the same guys who make PS3 magazine, surely they could include something off they have given away on the front of the magazine, I’d rather they either put something else on there or not bother and include more screen shots or reviews, it makes you think if they’ve got no exclusive content to give away, maybe the people who supply the content have lost faith in Firstplay.

Money guide to Red Dead? I can’t really comment because I haven’t played it much myself, just watched friends playing it and read reviews, but isn’t it one of those games that you’re pretty much knee deep in money by the end of the campaign?
Also, Pixeljunk Racers should never be mentioned in the same article as Wipeout HD, Wipeout deserves better than that
@9: Yeah the voice over girl wasn’t bad at first, but i seriously can’t stand it when they do jokes like when she starts singing or something, makes me cringe and actually annoys the hell out of me :/

the sooner you guys cut a deal with sony and put firstplay in psn plus the better for everyone as firstplay just doesnt cut it on its own imho without freebies as i can get everything else on web for free

Exactly, I know for a fact I won’t be renewing my subscription when it finishes, why bother when I can find everything for free, and even make my own themes by using an image off my PC.

Lots of great content on firstplay this week! One note, should pixeljunk racers be spelled Pixeljunk, not PixulJunk?

I agree with seany1, do like the stuff but really think should be tied in with ps+, have subscribed since launch but probably not going to bother renewing now.
Content is ok but nothing you can’t find on the net and the free downloads really have seemed to have dried up. Would still be interested if it came with plus but otherwise I will just download a few individual episodes if something amazing appears on it.

I done spelt gud.
Sorry folks – dreadful on both Wesley Sneijder and PixelJunk. I’m properly ashamed.
As I say in the post there is more downloadable content on the way, but we’ve always tried to stress that it’s unrealistic to expect something every week. And if you like what we’re doing – and we work hard to make sure as many people as possible do – then half an hour’s video content every week, plus extras every now and then, is more than good value for 99p, or even less on the subs price.

Well this is the third week i’ll just pass on downloading it even though i’m still subscribed *sigh*.
But hey 1/2hour of video every week for a price… oh wait theres tonnes of websites that churn out over 2hrs+ of video and 2hr+ podcasts (i’m looking at you GiantBomb) for free.

Wow, guys. MERN MERN MERN 99p IS RIDICULOUS I CAN GET ALL THIS FOR FREE ON THE WEB MERN MERN MERN
You don’t have to buy FirstPlay. It’s not compulsory. If you don’t like what you see from the episode’s description (posted YES – FOR FREE – on the PS blog and lots of gaming sites) then don’t buy it, simple as that. There’s no need to slam FirstPlay like this, really. I like it, but there’s definitely room for improvement, and I’m sure that as the service grows, the content will get better and there’ll be more of it. For now, if you don’t want to fork out 99p for it, then keep your change in your barely usable pockets and fire up the tinterweb.

The Killzone2 content seems like gd stuff, if it’s new that is. It’s not just old E3 stuff and other footgate that’s been on the internet for a few weeks is it?
Still will not be buying any FirstPlay for a while, while I focus on my PS+ subscription (which FirstPlay should definatly be a part of) but I may start buying them again if the content improves i.e better content and more up-tp-date stuff.

Here is a copy of an e-mail I sent to Future Publishing last week.
“I have just checked my e-mail account and I have 2 e-mails from the Playstation Store, regarding Wallet Funding and Purchase Confirmation. I opened them to find that FirstPlay has renewed my subscription without asking me, and added £5 to my wallet from my bank account to pay for it.
I had no intentions of renewing my subscription because I don’t believe the quality of the content has been good enough to warrant it. And I certainly don’t remember agreeing to anything that would let a company take money from my bank account without asking me.
So what I am asking for is a refund of £8.00 to my account and for my FirstPlay subscription to be cancelled. I did download today’s episode because it said it was free, and I thought my subscription ended last week. I realise now that it was only free because my subscription had been renewed without my knowledge, but I am willing to pay for this episode (14) because I have downloaded it to my Playstation 3.
Thank you in advance for your assisstance.”

As I say I sent that last week, and I haven’t received a reply from FP. This is extremely annoying and I hope you can help me out Nath, or at least give me a reply which is more than Future Publishing could do

I noticed the automatic subscription renewal as well Alex; I wasn’t too impressed, especially as I’d just forked out for PS+, but I would have re-subscribed anyway. There’s definitely a reason to be ticked off about it though; I don’t remember signing up to an automatic subscription renewal, and have not found any facility to cancel or opt out of any further automatic renewals short of removing the card details from my account, or cancelling the card with the bank.
In other news; why is it now whenever I read an aside pretty much anywhere, in my head it’s in dear Lucy’s voice? I’m already a fan of short cute ladies, and now there’s one in my head! AAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH!

FYI tehPete, I know what you mean about the automatic renewal. It is set as a default to on, the way to get round it is not simple to find, but the steps are as follows;
> Playstation Network Tab
> Account Management
> Transaction Management
> Service List
> Firstplay Subscription
> Firstplay 90 Day Subscription
> Option to stop auto-renew is here
Hope that helps anyone in a similar boat.

As firstplay is only available to only in UK and ireland, they can’t really put it into playstation plus as firstplay would have to be in other countries in europe

I dodged the autorenewl bullet thanks to my debit card being changed to a Visa and thus new details. I’m pretty sure as a day on subscriber it said I would have to RENEW at the end of every subscription manually but that I would be offered the same low price of £8.99. (A price which is yet to change hence it wasn’t really an offer?)
My advice is either call it a day or make it monthly and bigger and stick it in free as part of Plus.
Without a freebie its worthless considering we have THE INTERNETZ!

FirstPlay should be free to PlayStation Plus subscribers, like Qore is in the US.

Hello all,
Nath is off seeing FIFA 11, so you’ve got me instead. Appreciate all the feedback, good and bad, and have noted the debate over PlayStation Plus. There are no immediate plans at the moment, as we believe FirstPlay is a slightly different proposition (specifically, an editorial one) that’s compelling in its own right.

@34 You’re right…
There’s already been an article on the best racers on the PSN: Episode 12:
“PSN Racer Round-up – a look at the best racers on PSN
* PixelJunk Racers – Q-Games’ often underrated first title in the PJ series
* Outrun Online Arcade – still good fun, despite being a remake of the classic 80s arcade game
* WipEout HD Fury – definitely one of the best racers (and games) on PS3″

Thanks for the info Tridentmorph – nice to know the option exists! I’m happy enough with the content though to carry on subscribing
It’s a shame about the auto-renewal thing though, there’s obviously a lot of people who are on the fulcrum with regards to which way to go, and that might be the decider for some. Hopefully not for all though, as I really think Firstplay could be several kinds of awesomesauce; it’s just a new format of content delivery, finding its footing.
