Here on the PlayStation.Blog we give you plenty to read but perhaps not enough opportunity to speak. That’s going to change, starting with a new regular feature: The Friday Debate.
Each week, I’ll set a conversation topic and invite you to speak your brains in the comments. It could be the hot gaming topic of the week or something completely off the wall. If anyone would like to suggest a discussion topic, let me know in the comments or via Twitter.
This week’s topic came to mind during yesterday’s live chat with four minis developers. One of our readers, Rebecca, asked if the guys knew many female developers and, while they did, they said that the industry is still predominantly male.
As an extra bit of background, the reader survey that was conducted on the blog recently showed that more than 98% of respondents were male.
Are you a female gamer, or a woman that works in the games industry? Are your gaming communities, be they on forums or your PSN friends list, mostly guys? Do you think that there are particular games that appeal to women or is it a case that we’re all gamers, regardless of gender, and that it’s pointless making the distinction.
Let’s discuss this in the comments section and, as with anything new I try on here, let me know if you want to see more of this in the future.

I am a girl gamer with no female friends on my PSN friends list… While I have a couple of female friends who play an occasional game, I have even fewer that could be considered gamers. Most of those primarily seem to play rpgs though… If narrowed down to the over 30 crowd, the number of girl gamers I know becomes non-existent. I play everything but fps, a huge genre I really need to get into… In my household, I am the gamer, my husband watches me play. He prefers games with a solid storyline, rpgs mostly. I started gaming when I was 5 and raised my 2 younger brothers to be hardcore gamers.

Male or female, were all the same when it comes to games I think, I’m always willing to give any game ago (well as long as it doesnt involve loads of puzzles
), but puzzle games aside if you look at my list of games I have a wide genre. From the posts Ive just read on here many females arent just into the ‘cute’ games but are def up for showing us lads whos boss, COD, Killzone 2, Uncharted 2 etc and I really like it that way, its how a gaming community should be. My girlfriend is more into the handheld games and plays my collection of rpgs on the DS (she’ll prob steal my Go when I get one for my bday in september
) and always gets engrossed and enjoys watching me play away on the ps3

Interesting topic. Personally I haven’t come across many girl gamers online.
Great idea for interaction as well.

I am a female gamer and I have to admit when I bough my PS3 at midnight a few years ago! I was playing Ridge Racer 7, Motorstorm and Burnout Paradise! Girl Gamers um…yes there were a few others but we were definetly in the minority.
Singstar has helped in my opinion to boost the female gamers online! As there are loads now!
Although I am not sure if we are still taken seriously i.e. I am in a female clan called Hope-Gaming! (Hi @jenxy_). I was trawling the net for teams to challenge joined one site and they were very sexist and said my clan tag should be OVEN. I was really shocked by this lol and promptly left this site.
And I don’t get why guys like to pretend to be girls either. It’s common in PS Home and a guy attempted to be a girl by using voice changer on MW2. I don’t know the answer but we must be special to want to pretend to be us :p

i know they probably thought that ad would be seen as showing women can be in strong and in command, but then showing the woman in a kitchen wearing marigolds kind of goes against that.
if that isn’t on topic enough, one irritation i have with games is titles that let you customise your character in probably thousands of ways, but restricts you to creating a male character.
too much work is the usual excuse, it’s really annoying in the fps genre where women are pitifully under-represented, how many socom games did they make before they finally added a woman? i don’t even know if she’s playable yet.
i can understand where a game is tightly scripted and the protagonist has a very specific story arc, but there are plenty of games where you play a character you pretty much define what kind of person they are, how they behave, the decisions they make, almost everything, except their gender.

I’d like to see more female game developers. Sure, a woman can produce exactly the same kind of game as a male developer.
Still, I think there’s a chance that we might see something different, something with a different style.
In fact, it would be good to have more developers that are not “young american/english white guys”. This industry desperatly needs more variety in every aspect.

I’m a girl that games… I don’t play “girlie” games either. Prefer the games obviously aimed at the male target market. Most of my female friends are gamers too, we all play the same sort of games.

I like watching my husband play Call of Duty and MAG, but only when he has the headphone on! I even get into the game when he is playing and start yelling ‘shoot em’, to your right get em! I like playing LBP, the minis and Rock Band.

I’d bother to offer an opinion except I’m too busy shooting the guys in Killzone 2 multiplayer.
Helfire13 – 38 year old veteran female gamer (whose boyfriend PSN ID: thiefreaver won’t play against me online for fear of being beaten!).
P.S. Made the journey in to London on Saturday exclusively to get Sean (Colonel Radec) Pertwee’s autograph on some KZ2 artwork. Top bloke and sadly he confirmed that Radec will not be resurrected for KZ3. Those who have played KZ2 on elite will probably be breathing a sigh of relief about now.
