I saw this had been scheduled for the US PlayStation Blog and figured it might be of interest to you guys. Enough said, from me at least.
Once we decided to go for the old school, side scrolling, beat ‘em up style with Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game, we wanted to go all in! We brought in pixel artist extraordinaire Paul Robertson.
The next step was creating an amazing soundtrack. We immediately thought of Brooklyn chiptune rockers Anamanaguchi. They wowed us (and 5,000 others) at PAX and really captured the sound we wanted for the game. Here, the guys share their favorite songs from the game.

I really enjoyed how the Twin Dragons cue came into existence. It was very unexpected. A couple months ago we were playing a show here in Brooklyn with Ok, Go. I was hanging out backstage with one of my good friends Damon who also happens to be one of the most talented chip artists I know (he goes by Starscream with his drummer George). We were kinda bored and decided to start a collaboration italo-disco song on game boy. He started with an awesome bass line and beat, and I started writing some melody stuff. We didn’t get past the loop that night, but the next day I couldn’t get it out of my head, and kept working on it. I don’t remember at what point I realized it would work perfectly for the game… it sort of just transformed into that cue naturally. So yeah, it’s my favorite because it really started as a song for myself that ended up being for Scott Pilgrim. That natural transition is a great example of what made the project so fun. It never really felt like writing for a video game, it felt more like composing music for life stuff we’ve all experienced – stuff that Scott pilgrim happened to have experienced as well…

“Suburban Tram”Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
I’m especially proud of the track we wrote for the train level – Suburban Tram. When we were working on it, Pete had brought up giving it a sort of Hot Water Music-type sound, and it actually came very naturally after that. I really love positive, uplifting punk and post-hardcore music, and it was a lot of fun to try and translate it into our distinct style. Something about the final version of this track evokes real motion, as in makes you want to move, both from the heart and on the road.. at least that’s how i hear it!

“This is the End”Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
It was really interesting to hear ‘This is the End’ (yes, it’s for the perfect ending only!) go through many different phases as it was being written. At first it was just a straight ballad, but it needed something more… more epic and triumphant. Obviously it’s gotta be the best song ever if you have to be perfect to get there. That’s when Ary mentioned to Pete to think of it more as an epic Queen ballad, and it all came together after that. Pete absolutely nailed it. Not only will this song be extremely gratifying to the player as they perfect the game, but it also ended up being one of the last songs we wrote, and the last song we mixed, so us too were even treated to the ‘perfect’ ending of an incredibly amazing project.

“Scott Pilgrim Theme”Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
It’s really difficult for me to pick just one track to talk about, so I guess I’ll approach it in the big picture and discuss the theme. This was the first song we wrote for the game, I wanted the theme to be everything that epitomizes “Scott Pilgrim” to me. I wanted a melody that was both melancholy and triumphant, I wanted it to evoke a sort of nostalgic John Hughes world and the deluge of emotions and gut feelings that present themselves when you’re completely smitten, which Scott Pilgrim undoubtedly is. That’s what the second half of the song is about, the first half is about punching people, obviously.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World debuts exclusively on the PlayStation Network on August 11th.

James, it’s nice that you’ve posted something here that was destined to be posted on the US blog only. However, you really need to get on to the developers (not just these guys) to post more information on this blog.
We still don’t have any more information on a concrete GT5 or LBP2 release date or special/collectors edition (amongst other things).
UFG (to name but one) post updates every monday on US blog, but we get nothing … do we not exist?
Yet again it seems like developers only seem to care about the US market when they should clearly be trying to get their information out to everybody (US, EU, ASIA). By the same token, I know we get information here that the US blog doesn’t, but this shouldn’t happen (unless a specific title is only actually due for release in one region … which very rarely happens)
Please note this is not a complaint, merely constructive criticism. Hopefully you will be able to help rectify this situation.

Thank you for the feedback – it’s duly noted and I totally agree with you. Getting more developers on here regularly is absolutely my aim and I’m working on it. We had the guys from Evolution here for a live chat and hopefully that will spur them on to get involved more. I also spend a lot of time pushing for information on things like the LBP2 and GT5 editions; I might not always be able to provide the answers that you want but I am always asking for it.
gamescom is just around the corner and I can promise there will be a huge amount of fresh, original content created for the EU blog.
Thanks again for the feedback; this is your blog and info like this helps me a lot.

I need this now as I’m a huge Scott Pilgrim fan. Can anyone confirm the UK price please. Also would love the soundtrack to be released. Since the US could preorder it and we couldn’t will the EU get anything special ?

@James Gallagher On the US blog it says about pre-order. Can we do the same? If so where from? By the way this game look great.
Posted on 29 July, 2010 at 1:29 pm by James Gallagher
No need to pre-order – just download it from PlayStation Store. I’m confident we won’t run out of stock!

James,
It is a bitt off-topic but I think you want to hear it.
) and when I looked at this blog the embedded movies showed up!
Two days ago I was using the PS3 browser (or trying to
But they didn’t play perfectly yet and fullscreen didn’t work. Once I used zoom (the R3 button I think) my browser run out of memory (1 other page opened at the moment) and my PS3 hang and needed a hard restart.
So there is some progress in the embedded movies, keep up the good work, and hope they will work better / more stable soon

We’re working extremely hard at improving our websites for the PS3 browser. Getting videos working was the first small step towards that larger vision. If you’re having memory issues then might I suggest clearing the cache via the options menu (hit triangle)?

I cleared the cache 5 minutes ago (including cookies and search history).
) (Posted on 27 July)
navigated from the PS3 homepage to the blog.
Then watched the “Premier Manager” movie (couldn’t get it to full screen) (Posted on 29 July)
Followed by the Earthworm Jim movie (worked in fullscreen
But when I hit the page back button I already ran out of memory again. But this time my PS3 didn’t completely crash.
After cleaning again the full screen function worked on the Premier Manager movie but I cant really figure out when the fullscreen button works and when it doesn’t.

Thanks for the feedback – I’m going to run a few tests on my PS3 here and see if I can find any reason for the inconsistency.
