New York is one hell of a town. SCEA held a media day there last week and Sid Shuman, resident zombie expert over on the US PlayStation Blog, was there to check out the latest and greatest PlayStation games. I particularly enjoyed his hands-on impressions of Dead Nation and would like to share it with you guys. No love for Shaun of the Dead, Sid?
I’m a pathological fan of zombie movies. Night of the Living Dead. Return of the Living Dead. 28 Days Later, [REC], Dawn of the Dead — I count these films among my all-time favorites.
So I was obviously itching to get my mitts on Dead Nation, the upcoming PSN shooter from the creators of Super Stardust HD. Luckily, I got some extensive play time from last week’s NYC PlayStation media day. Here’s what I learned.
You can upgrade your guns…a lot. Dead Nation’s environments are dotted with fenced-in “safe zones” that give you a chance to catch your breath and buy supplies from a convenient gun shop. In addition to buying health and ammo, you can purchase mods that will enhance your various weapons in different ways, depending on the gun. You can upgrade a wide variety of stats: damage, ammo capacity, firing rate, reload time, and range.
The Shotgun is devastating. The Dead Nation build I played featured three weapons — the Shotgun, SMG, and Rifle — with more to come in the final version. Early on, I decided to pour my money into upgrading the Shotgun’s damage and spread capability. The results were impressive: My buckshot blasts became massive cones of death, ripping through the ghoul hordes like a wet sneeze through a store-brand tissue. Sometimes I swapped to the SMG for its rapid firing rate, or the Rifle for its long-range capabilities. But come Dead Nation’s release date later this fall, I know what my go-to gun will be.
There are many zombie types. After you shake off the initial shock of battling dozens and dozens of zombies, you’ll quickly learn that not every zombie is created equal. You’ll see fast, gangly zombies that rush up close but fall quickly to melee attacks. You’ll see big, tough zombies that take a licking but move more slowly. I even spotted a few zombie cops that wildly fired their service revolvers while they lunged at me.
Mobility = life. Housemarque’s previous game, twinstick PSN shooter Super Stardust HD, is clearly an influence on Dead Nation’s fast-paced gameplay. For example, rapid kills fill up your combo meter, which in turn sends your score into the stratosphere. As in Super Stardust HD, you’ll also realize the importance of staying mobile to avoid incoming enemies — to get cornered is to die. Luckily, you can throw mines and grenades to clear some temporary space, or use the “rush” move to push your way through a line of hungry flesh eaters.
Dead Nation will be released on PSN later this fall. Have any questions about its core gameplay, or zombies in general? Ask away in the comments!

This game looks totally awesome! Can’t wait. I take it there was no news on the community features? They haven’t been covered very much currently :/

Expect more on this… We are just polishing and tuning this area at the moment and don’t want to show or discuss until we are happy with it.

Oh brilliant, Is it easy to get past the zombies when they trap you, (thats kind of a silly question) And are safe spots overused. (I hope not, there is nothing better than ripping your way through Zombieland style)

“Have any questions about its core gameplay, or zombies in general? Ask away in the comments!”
Does anyone know if the levels are open,or is each level arena based? It wont buy it if it’s fancy looking burn zombie burn.It looks open but i’ve not seen enough to be sure.

I’ll probably buy it as I love Super Stardust HD but I’ve never seen the appeal in killing zombies. They’re so boring and stupid that it never feels very satsifying.

I cross the fingers for a good story and not a mere purpose for kill zombies…and the gameplay looks so ordinary.

Hoping this is story focused and not just arena based also

I am guessing that this is an arena based shooter, in the same vein as SSHD, with the chief goals being high scores and survival.
I know that we are all craving something to give us a ‘Left 4 Dead’ type fix on PS3, but I don’t think this is the game to deliver it. Having said that, the theme, design and lighting on show, together with the developer’s track record, still all point to it being a great game, and I for one cannot wait to download it.

@kap
If im right i played the early alpha ( @ GAMES CONVENTION)german 2009
the game was scripted (like all games mostly) you start at point a and have to go to point b end point
i really dont know if the changed something, the have to otherwise it would already been released after game convention
graphics are perfect even back in beginning 2009 when i played it so it only can be better

Hmm, I’m a born procrastinator so I guess I’d sit in a rocking chair, nursing a shotgun… naps are a hazard there.
Actually, I’d probably just quiver in the shed.

“No love for Shaun of the Dead, Sid?”
I’d hope not – dire, dire film that was.
But as for Dead Nation… really looking forward to it.

How many levels will this game have?
Does it have a variety of scene settings? (I hope so)
Will it have online co-op? (wishful thinking)
Will it have a survival mode?
I have have one eye on this game and £40 PSN vouchers at the ready, make me spend it.

It looks insanely fun, is it like Stardust where you get one zombie on you and your out or do you get a life meter of some sort?
Also any idea on how many weapons we’ll have at our disposal?
Can’t wait to pick this one up
Posted on 3 August, 2010 at 11:21 am by Robert Karp
There is a health bar. We also have lots of weapons, keep your eyes peeled for an upcoming trailer, which will give you a glimpse into some of the weapons on offer…

Even though it’s an old-school fixed perspective game the graphics look sweet and right up to date. Even the torchlight and shadows look cool . The more i see of it the more i’m liking it.
I’m not big into zombie games but i can see why they are a popular choice for video games. Vampires are creepy wanting to suck your neck all the time and werewolves just a little too vicious . Mummies perhaps but then how do you explain hordes of mummies… yep, zombies it is then – perfect fodder material and easy to explain with some chemical leak or whatnot
I do have a question about Dead Nation. Early on when i first heard about the game i thought there was some talk about each area of the game map corresponding to which country you live in so you could fight for your own nation or something to that effect. I haven’t heard anything about that since so now i’m wondering did i imagine it ?

@ Bonyman – I remember the same article.
Just checked, and on the Dead Nation page at Playstation website it says “Track your zombie kills with the daily online world map and reduce the zombie virus with other Dead Nation players in the country you’re playing”
IGN hands-on confirms this too: “As the PlayStation Network checks your account for geographic location, Dead Nation will actually start users off in their virtual country of residence, along with other players from that area. Then, players will cooperate as a whole to kill the zombies in that nation collectively and stats are displayed on the world map as you go.”
Sounds cool.

Really looking forward to this.
A bit disappointed with the content coming out on PSN of late especially considering what’s been coming out on XBLA’s Summer of Arcade. The PSN staff should be aiming for at least one quality, must-have title per month whether it be a beautifully crafted indie platformer, psychadelic rhythm game or a fun twin stick shooter like DN.
If possible would like to see some news on Machinarium , Under Siege and also the ‘Ferrari The Race Experience’ PSN game supposed to be coming out in September(!). This game is by the makers of Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli and despite being PS3 focussed they seem to get little PR from Sony.

Will there be a “special” (cut) German version of the game? If so, no buy

Looks like Alien Shooter, very nice \m/ I was thinking though by looking at the screens.. Anychance of them adding a no HUD mode, or dont you know? It’d look awesome with just no ‘rubbish’ on screen. (Think of performance mode on GH). Defo gunna buy this.

wow, you answered one qeustions. Which had nothing to do with the game! Yet many legit questions go unanswered. What is the point of this blog again? because i fail to see any reason people should post here.

I try to pop on at weekends to respond to comments but I had some friends visiting this week and didn’t have much free time. Also, I’m trying to get answers to your questions but the original article was written by Sid in the US. I’ve just emailed the producer to see if he has time to pop on and respond.

Thanks for the replies Robert – I am very pleased to hear that the game is level based – it is sounding better with every hands-on/preview that appears.
Can we please have it soon though?
