Just before setting off for Germany – the birthplace of my favourite film of all time, Lola Rennt – I found time for a coffee with Efe Cakarel; the founder of MUBI, connoisseur of Hong Kong cinema and all-round great guy to spend time with.
Below is a video interview that, we hope, will shed light on the cinephile’s paradise coming later this year to European PlayStation 3 owners.
If you want a sneak preview of what the service has to offer, head over to mubi.com and feel free to follow me – my username is my name.
And before you ask, MUBI will be available in the following countries: United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Portugal.

Later this year? Can you narrow it down a bit? Quite interested in this although I’m currently in Japan and so won’t be able to access it. Really wish Sony would make these apps available globally.

The date will be announced tomorrow at the SCEE press conference.

I’ve been looking forward to this since it was first announced, I’m sure there’s a ton of great movies that I’ve never heard of.
Just logged in with my account and searched for your name, there’s two of you…lol Which are you?

Oh really? I’m the one that gave five stars to Run Lola Run!

SO SO excited for this. Music videos aren’t really my thing so Vidzone passed me by, but this sounds absolutely fantastic. I can’t wait to get going on this and see what films I’ve missed out on! Chunking Express is a brilliant film too, recommend it to anyone who hasn’t seen it yet.

I looking forward to MUBI it will be a good addition to the network.
I have a few questions:
How will it be implemented? Will it get its own icon on the XMB or access through the store?
Will this replace the movie store on PSN? Ireland still has to get it.
Posted on 17 August, 2010 at 9:35 am by James Gallagher
It’s application that you download, just like VidZone, and the films are streamed as opposed to downloads. It won’t be replacing the Movie Store

great news, can’t wait for this….aah loving my ps3 even more now

the video isn’t showing up for me!
cannot wait for MUBI. have been eagerly anticipating this since it was announced. am a HUGE film fan, have liked the PSN movie store but really think it could do with a subscription based rental service, streaming the film instead of having to wait for the download to complete. MUBI looks to fill this gap, but sadly is devoid of more recent blockbusters (don’t get me wrong, some of the older / foreign films are the best made, but i’d still like to sample what hollywood has to offer)
so yeah, along with MUBI add a streaming rental service to the PSN videostore (with optional subscription packages) and i think you’d become my number one movie outlet

MUBI looks like a great service. but if theyre very selective about their movies. will we get movie download on the PSNstore in addition to this?? cos while classics and weird art films can b great, its still nice to watch movies like “hangover” sometimes.

I hope SCEE aren’t blowing their load a day before the conference. I hope you guys still have some genuine surprises left for us, other than the rather obvious PS3 software announcement we are all expecting.

Any plans for Russian support?
We have no Video Store, no PSN+, no Vidzone and now no MUBI. SCE has a lot to catch up.

MUBI could render the normal videostore completely useless if we could rent/watch all those thousands of movies which are on mubi.com right now…but when I browse through the tiny and quite frankly not so good selection accessible in my country (Switzerland), it just makes me sad and angry at the missed opportunity. This feature could virtually print money, but with such a limited offer (in my country at least), I don’t see it being successful at all.
(Several months ago the catalog on mubi.com displayed over 500 pages full of movies, from “Blade Runner” through “The Life of Others”, but only around 20 odd pages were available in my region. Now I can’t even browse through the whole catalog anymore, must be thanks to an IP region block…from a marketing standpoint it is understandable, who wants to see what he cannot rent?)

I am slightly confused about Mubi i checked the website and most of the movies I saw were from foreign countries and I didn’t see any movies that have had an international release.

Great that Sweden finally is getting some kind of movie service! Now it is MY continuing ritual to ask this:
WHEN will we get the PSN movie store to Nordic countries?! XBOX has it already ans SONY owns a movie & TV company…it is just silly.

yaaay. been looking forward to this since I first saw it announced. I don’t see why it’d be very popular with general PS3 audiences though.

will it be available in other countries like UAE?

Posted on 17 August, 2010 at 7:00 am by Danipenn
Anyway…the selection of movies is unbelievably poor, at least in the country I am living at the moment (Finland) even though they told me that they have more films offered in Finland than in England for example…lol
The list of movies present in their site includes most of the movie ever being made, which are not necessarily the list of movies the offer. It is also a community so every movie is discussed even though they do not offer the possibility of watch it.
The available titles though are mostly for geeks and/or people who really appreciate art/alternative flicks…ehm…hello? Is anybody there? He says that it’s their selection of movies…I say they are the movies that they are allowed to show, I don’t think they would decide not to show certain kind of movies just for the fun of it…omg are these people really thinking that we are stupid?
The service is probably going to fail big time unfortunately…good luck anyway. I will probably subscribe for a couple of months to support them anyway because in the end I appreciate these kind of services but they need to offer a better service if they don’t want to be replaced straight away from a more daring company.

Run Lola Run is horrible! I am currently studying that movie in class in english. OMG I HATE IT! I have seen it like 100 times in like 2 months and written way too many essays on it. But seriously how is it your favourite movie? there are far better movies than that.

Posted on 17 August, 2010 at 6:45 pm by didzej1
When Poland? I hope for a time, when someone actually answers that question describing who Sony has trouble with, so we can petition them or something. I don’t know… With XBox Live coming to Poland sooner than later PS3 users are left behind
43
Posted on 17 August, 2010 at 7:04 pm by Danipenn
I don’t think Sony would just decide not to include any countries when offering new services since it would mean more revenues…I think you have to thank the trading regulations of Poland and of all the other countries where these services are not available I am afraid.
44
Posted on 17 August, 2010 at 11:36 pm by didzej1
@43 It doesn’t seem to be about trading regulations, as those are pretty much the same in the entire European Union. In fact Sony Music (and similar subsidiaries) is one of the biggest publishers here in Poland, where they market their stuff, sell it, produce music videos and generally hold _all_ intellectual property rights WRT to distribution. If it were just for some regulations we would have received an answer as to why those services aren’t available, surely the legal department can issue a few words for a press release (sarcasm not really intended). No answer whatsoever, on every occasion a new service is introduced, means that Sony just doesn’t care about Poland and it’s loyal user base…
