As gamescom 2010 begins its assault on our senses, we’ve already been witness to staggering number of games set to create a stir on PlayStation for the year and beyond. Two conferences were the order of the day, the first kicking things off with a massive Electronic Arts showing.
In an impressively large – and often ear-bleedingly loud – auditorium, the company unleashed a range of titles. Among a massive selection, including a startlingly good trailer for magical role playing game Dragon Age II, some rather special visuals from first person shooter Crysis 2 which showed off an intense multiplayer session, news of FIFA 11 featuring an 11 vs 11 gameplay (as well as the chance to train as a goalkeeper so you’ll have no excuse for butterfingers if you’re the man between the sticks) and the debut showing of The Sims 3 on PS3.
However, the stars of the show came in the glittering shape of two of the company’s most eagerly awaited titles. The big news everyone dared to dream about finally came into reality as BioWare’s acclaimed sci-fi adventure game, Mass Effect 2, was announced for PlayStation 3, due for launch in January 2011. BioWare Group General Manager, Dr Ray Muzyka only had one thing to say about the announcement, which came with some slick games footage and then thunderous applause: “That’s frigging awesome”. Can’t argue with that.
Spine-tingling sci-fi horror Dead Space 2 also took some well earned plaudits, with an incredibly attractive demo showing the series’ star Isaac Clarke taking on some zero gravity as he navigated through space debris towards a colossal space station. Amazing lighting effects and a booming yet atmospheric sound stage made the announcement of a 28 January 2011 launch seem all too far away. Oh, and did we mention that the PS3 version will come in a limited edition pack which includes PS Move compatible title, Dead Space: Extraction, in full High Definition?
The double team of EA and Sony Computer Entertainment became even clear during SCEE’s press conference which followed immediately after, leaving little time to catch our breath (luckily both centres were right next to each other) – as Medal of Honor took part in the SCEE presentation to show off the news of Linkin Park contributing to the game’s soundtrack, while the group’s vocalist Mike Shinoda blazed through a level which saw him taking up the controls of a heavily armoured attack chopper. To top things off, EA announced that Medal of Honor: Frontline would feature in a special limited edition version of the PS3 game.
There were plenty of SCEE titles which impressed too, as the unveiling of Insomniac Games’ Resistance 3 and Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One took everyone by surprise. While not much was shown of Resistance 3, the mysterious teaser video hinted at what you’d want from the first person shooter series – more action, more horror, more Chimera, set across a despairing and desolate backdrop that simply dripped with atmosphere. Closer to the opposite end of the tonal spectrum, sci-fi adventure Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One was a tad more humorous, boasting four player drop-in/drop-out co-operative action for the first time in the series as you choose between the titular heroes, Dr Nefarious and the bumbling Captain Qwark. A lovely demo showed off the sort of livewire co-operative play we can expect in 2011, with puzzles, platforms and boisterously big bosses to contend with.
SCEE president Andrew House also made a big show of the imminent PlayStation Move motion controller and stereoscopic 3D, both of which offered new game experiences – whether it’s racing through the lavish tracks of Gran Turismo 5 (which hits PS3 November), ripping through the Helghast in Killzone 3 or slamming home a winning shot in Virtua Tennis 4. Phew.
We’re barely scratching the surface of what’s at gamescom 2010, which means there’s plenty more to enjoy. Keep reading for more reports fresh from the show floor.

Yeah, Mass Effect 2!
But I’m afraid I won’t buy.
Not unless they release the first one as well so I can import my save to 2. Many people around the web feel the same as I do.
Why not release it under a different name like Team Ninja did with Ninja Gaiden Sigma to circumvent legal issues?

Good spot – we’re putting out some serious word count this week so one or two were bound to slip through. We’re just off to collapse for the night but we’ll log on tomorrow and respond more fully to everyone’s comments. Night night.

It was a good day.
I am happy I get to play Mass Effect 2 on my PS3 but no Mass Effect 1 makes you miss part of the story.
I new Ratchet and Resistance is a highlight of the day. I wish they were out this year.
Want annoyed be was no mention of the video store in Ireland we waited a year and we heard nothing. Is it happening at all? I was certain it would be out this year.
Secondly all these different iplayers and still nothing for Ireland. I watch BBC, ITV and lots of other channels and we can’t get access to the player.

So will this “mubi” be availble in Scandinavia?( i mean, 18 contries – its gotta be, right?)
And also, when will the Movie store get to scandinavia?, I belive it was promised in 2007 or 2008 that the moviestore would be in all EU contries by the end of 2010. I CLEARLY remember that David Reeves stated that in the conference.

You didn’t happen to see any gameplay for Dragon Age 2 James? I love Origins that much, I just hope DA2 won’t end up like ME2 when you compare it to ME.

OMG MASS EFFECT 2 FTW
Like someone has stated, I hope that we get Mass Effect 1 aswell
not only does it give a backstory, but the choices that you make affect MS2 (and MS3)
I’m getting it regardless.
Mass Effect is probably the only reason I still have an xbox

don’t care about old crappy movies in mube.
short for “more unintressting Boring Enterpainment”
the EU Customers, paying your salary, demand a videostore for the EU (yes its bigger than the Uk,France & germany)
ps playtv2 will that be released in the Benelux,
or is the crappy management in the Benelux again holding this back.
and ps2 ,
instead of the crappy service of the livetv of the NOS,
which only shows news instead of everything which can be viewed online
please use the RTL & SBS group.they broadcast everything online
if it works on a crappy EMinent mediatank,it should be possible
on a powerhouse called PS3.
however……….
more things have disappeared in the past, which made the ps3 a powerhouse

The first game i played on the my PS3 was Resistance Fall of Man.
It was so good I got Resistance 2 big let down.
But the thing is the adds suck, like just there with the real people on the train. who ever came up with that idea should be fired.
Still going too get Resistance 3…
27
Posted on 18 August, 2010 at 1:21 am by Dragonstorm25
I’m hoping we can see some Resistance 3 gameplay soon (I hope they make it miore like the first one, second one was kind of a downgrade to COD level.
I will definastly get ME2 (the only reason I still keep my Xbox, but I really think they should release ME1 too, otherwise it’s just plain stupid.

RE: Mubi A cool addition thanks Sony, I dont watch many foreign or indie films but its nice to have the choice. Now just get 4oD on board please so I can watch Southland on my PS3
RE: Dead Space 2, cant wait for this, not finished first yet, not due to it being too hard but cos it scares the shizzle out of me. I always have a couple of pairs of pants on standby when I play Dead Space lol
RE: Mass Effect 2, thank you for bringing this to PS3, shame you couldn’t get the first game but oh well. If you can get Gabe Newell to bring the LD franchise over too then ill have no reason to ever buy that other console.
RE: Resistance 3 FINALLY a weird but effective trailer, was hoping to see some gameplay or at least cut scenes or anything in game as it has been nearly 2 years since R2. My only concern is the apparent post apocalyptic setting, i fear people are getting jaded with this setting after all in the past 2 years we’ve had Fallout 3 and New Vegas soon, Killzone 2 looks kinda post apocalyptic, Borderlands, Motorstorm Apocalypse coming soon too (plus others I cant remember at this time). I just hope in the extra time Insomniac have had to work on R3 that they have thought up something that will seperate R3 from the pack.

Excellent Gamescom, better with a stream but hey can’t have everything, and you guys are doing great bringing all the content to us. Dead Space looked amazing though on the EA conference.

@#28 p4zinho331
I got the impression that the Resistance 3 trailer was more of an American Depression-era setting rather than a post-apocalyptic one. With the alternate history of the Chimera invasion, a delayed depression in the 50s/60s could fit quite well

@32. the guy walking down the tracks has ascar simular to capalli. i too thought the time frame seemed abit out of wack till i saw the train go past a 50′s cadillac.
The way i see it is they will somehow tie retribution and resistance 2 ending for the R3 story as they are likely to give the franchise a rest after 3 which would be a mega shame.
i dunno why people hate resistance 2, i loved it and R1 was first game i had for ps3. (i had sonic but it didnt work so took it back and got resistance instead)
anyway great showing at gamescon SCEE and lets hope the momentum keeps up till end of the year. Now if you can start tweaking other issues and service fixes before end of the year no one will want a 360 next year. fix & suggestions (4OD,working pal ticker, dedicated ps3 facebook app, fix issues with hardcore purchasers on plus, make remastered ps2 games more frequenty and deliver digitally via psn, x game chat video/voice, implement custom soundtracks as mandatory, back patch old first party games with trophys, make in game youtube support mandatory, more beta details.)

Great news from this GamesCom BTW.
Resistance 3. Ratchet & Clank A4O. And the game of the show, Mass Effect 2 on PS3.

Hey James, could you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE AND IM BEGGING YOU make a request to have FirstPlay thrown into Plus weekly.. now, hold on, I dont mean for free
I know it would cost €44 a year to put in a years FirstPlay so that would be unfair. But, the US do get a $25 Qore subscription which is half their money back again.
So, my idea is, give us the option to subscribe to FirstPlay at half price. So, we can buy a 90 day subscription for 5.50 instead of 10.99 ?
Could you pass it on to James Thorpe for me ?
Thanks, I have downloaded a couple of free Qore episodes and 2 Firstplay and love them so, if you could get some kind of offer for us ! Thanks a million.
Cant wait to hear about LPB2… hope we get the collectors like US or I wont be happy…..
So, if you can pass that on, thanks !

Mass Effect 2 is great!
And I think that while not the best solution, there’s a moment where they ask shepard what happened during some key points in the first game. When that happens they could put some 30 minutes or so sequences of play where you decided what to do in those moments.

Virtua Tennis with Move support is actually the best and biggest surprise for me, I really wanted a real tennis simulation with motion controls for a long time (and neither Wii Sports, nor Grand Slam Tennis with motion+ control have done that for me).
Also I’m really happy for all those of you that haven’t played Mass Effect 2 yet, it really is one of the best games in the recent years.

James/Corey, can you see if you can dig up the specifics on PlayTV. Is it just a software update or is there new hardware (i.e. HD in the UK) on the way as well?

hey there thanks for the news hope your enjoying Gamescom, Can’t wait to get my hands on some of these future releases.
Can i ask has there been any news on the 120gb price drop and date when that comes into effect ?
Just got a pre owned console yesterday and i’m about to return it as it was unhappy with its condition and want to make sure i get a good deal.
Also with the playstation move is that going to be patched in all future games from now on or is it just for specific games ?
46

@prime1982
It will only be a few games like Heavy Rain and RE: Gold

It had more surprises then the E3.
Why no live stream.
Half of all sold PS3´s are sold in the EU.
It´s about time we don´t get treated as second class.
I want netflix, PlayTV, a much better PS Store (prices, content, etc) and be able to download comics!
