Like what?
MUBI is coming to PS3. Which means your console will become an online cinema.
Cool. Why?
Well, most people who are into gaming love cinema, which pretty much answers the question.
When?
From October.
Where?
Straight to the point! We like that… So, to begin with it will be available in the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Australia and New Zealand
How much?
Certainly no messing around with you. Ok, an ‘all you can watch’ monthly subscription is €12.99 / £9.99. Individual films are €3.59 / £2.99 each. Sweet, right?
Can you expand a bit?
Sure. Didn’t expect that one but I’ll improvise. MUBI is an online social cinematheque that will bring the best independent, classic, and international films to your living room. Watch favorites like Amélie, Pan’s Labyrinth, and Mulholland Dr. to festival gems and award winners from every festival in the planet.
MUBI is also social; it’s not just a virtual cinema but also the cafe next door, where film discussion takes place. You can rate and become a fan of films, share your recommendations on PlayStation Network and Facebook, follow your friends, and get real-time updates on the films they love. That came out right I, thought…
Didn’t get any of that but anyway… What’s with the haircut?
Ehhh…

* By the way, this post is based in an imaginary Q&A between Efe Cakarel, Founder of MUBI, and a girl from The Netherlands who’s been playing with her PS3 for six straight hours.

This is great and all, but we still need video rental. But this is indeed a great step forward!
And thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you soooo much for making sure it’s available in (almost) ALL countries! THANK YOU!

If we buy individual films at 3.50 does this mean we can watch them as many times for that month or is it a once off and we have to pay again if we want to watch it again.
?
Posted on 20 August, 2010 at 5:47 pm by Efe Cakarel
Hello. Pay per view is a 7-day rental. You have 7 days to watch the film. And you can watch it as many times as you want during that period. We never liked to have only 24 hours to watch a film. That’s why we offer 7 days. Enjoy.. /efe

Dont understand people complaining about the prices?
All you can watch for €12.99 / £9.99 a month is nothing! I recon the people saying its to much are children and not working for a living…becaus its pocket money realy…
And if you dont want to subscribe you can rent a movie from your own livingroom for €3.59 / £2.99!! Thats NOTHING….
So thanks for brining this service to the Playstation and the pricing is just about right so dont mind these silly posts.

i have a few questions.
the individual price, is that for buying or renting? and are the movies strictly streamed or downloadable?
and will the service on ps3 use the psn wallet or a seperate billing system?
Posted on 20 August, 2010 at 5:51 pm by Efe Cakarel
Progressive download. Like YouTube. You press play, and you instantly start watching. We think that’s the right user experience. And it’s also why we are not offering HD on day one (very very few people have enough bandwidth to instantly start watching HD content). We’d rather have you start watching a very good quality video instantly than HD video in an hour.
The service is integrated with PSN wallet. No separate billing.
Thanks. /efe

“Countries: AE, AU, GB, IE, NZ”
Hi, why is ‘AE’ (United Arab Emirates) included in the countries tag when it will not be initially available here? Can you please clarify this. I’m already a PlayStation Plus subscriber and will also subscribe to this if it’ll be available here.

In Norway there is 24 pages with movies we can watch on Mubi, compared to 749 pages in the US.
WHAT THE?? I went trugh the movies we can rent here in Norway with Mubi and it’s realy realy poor.
If this is what we get then I realy hope you are gonna work HARD and FAST to get more content. Becaus that was just hillarius…

You have no idea how hard we are working to offer as many great films in as many territories we can. The pressure is on. And, we’ll continue working hard. /efe

Nice, but really when is the videostore coming to the Netherlands……never if you ask me, Sony doesn’t keep his promises. The least they can do is keep us informed and not in the loop.

are the films streamed ?
are they HD ?
£2.99 . . ouch !
how “independent” are the filmmakers ?
will we see more mainstream movies or are you exclusivly “independent”
nikita in the original french with english subs – pretty please
angel.a – pretty pretty pretty please, sugar, cherries
pans labryinth – awesome film
what are the actual mechanics of the service ? (sorry sony but yours sucks)

Hopefully it’s not only old films that’s on this service and I may consider renting some films

Posted on 20 August, 2010 at 8:12 am by Snoopyfreak
I think this is overpriced. One OLD movie for 3,59€?! That’s pretty much. At mine local movierenter, it costs me 0,70€ for and old movie. Movies from 1 month old, I pay 14 movies for 10€!
Sorry, too much for me, I’ll keep going to my local movierenter, where I even have the possibilty to copy the movie.
Question:
If you’ve rent a movie, for how long can u watch the movie (by example, it’s late, i fall asleep, can i wacht the movie further the next day)?
Grtz

absolute load of rubbish.
after looking at the mubi website theres absolutely no current, or even older AAA films.
just a collection of straight to tv rubbish that you might find on amazon dvd store for 1pence second hand.
if you want to see some really really old black & white B movies in taiwanese then its ideal, if youre looking for the likes of predator, alien, captain corellis mandolin, big trouble in little china, transformers, pandorum etc etc then you have got no chance.

Great news I’ll be there day one as my lovefilm subscription is just about to run out. I think a lot of people seem to be missing the point age is not a sign of quality just because a film was out six months ago doesn’t mean it could stand up to something like The Bicycle Thieves.
What I would advise is a way to help people not familiar with art films, for instance “Like Pulp Fiction? You should check out Amores Peres”. A series of personal recommendations by the Mubi team would also help unearth those hidden gems you’ve never heard of.

This looks cool but I’d much prefer to see a lovefilm app as I’m only really into mainstream movies.

I really don’t see the point of this since we already have a video section in the playstation store.

That’s great news I love independent/film festival movies, though I doubt it will be released in Ireland. Like it happened with the PSN video store… any news on that btw? What’s the progress and status of the movie service for Ireland?

Posted on 20 August, 2010 at 2:15 pm by gypsiee
Honestly to the people complaining about it not having mainstream movies… what the hell is wrong with you??? Clearly this site caters for a different type of movie fan.
I for one think it’s fantastic as I am a great fan of world cinema which can be very hard to get hold of in your local video store.
I will be subscribing from day 1 although I do we will see a larger list soon like the USA has.

I love “foreign” and classical film, so this would be perfect! 361 films in Netherlands is a good start, and the price is right for unlimited viewing.
But there must be three things before I subscribe, and I have a feeling I reflect the requirements of a good share of movie aficionados:
1. English subtitles and original audio. Efe’s response “original language with either local or English subtitles” isn’t clear on whether they are both available for all films. I’m fine as long as at least English is available for all non-English films.
2. At least 720p for movies which are available in HD, or I won’t subscribe. This is 2010 and there’s no excuse to stream something in SD if HD version is available. And none of this bait-and-switch of streaming 720p content with DVD bitrates. “Movies are high quality” is vague uninformative marketing speak and doesn’t even start answering the question of what quality, resolution and especially bitrate we’re talking about.
3. Support for surround sound and preferably DTS and other high bitrate codecs. Many films will only have stereo, but several on the list have surround sound.

been dying for this service to launch, and £9.99 a month sounds like a good price point BUT you guys really are going to have to boulster the amount of films available before i subscribe (i know Efe you’ve said that there will be more by launch, but i’ve been checking the UK listings now almost weekly on the site and they don’t appear to be changing at all. this has me worried as i am really really looking forwards to a dedicated service for classic and indie films. dont let me down!)
also, if any Sony suits are reading this – sort out as streaming rental subscription service for the PSN Video store, it makes NO sense to me at all that you guys haven’t got this. DO IT. i’ll subscribe to that without a second thought, regardless of price!

Hello. Great questions..
1. The reason some films will be offered with English subtitles is because not all great films get distribution in every territory, and therefore never get released with a local subtitle. I’d rather bring the entire filmography of Fellini to you even though only a few have local subtitles.
2. I never liked marketing BS. And I did not intend to be vague. Films will be encoded at 640-720 resolution (depending on the master) at ~800kbps. We believe the right user experience is instant viewing. Not waiting for an hour and a half for the film to download. HD encoding is not complex, we wrote the book on it (literally.. one of the guys who wrote x264, the library that h.264 uses, from scratch is in our team). But this is not about technology; it’s about user experience. I want you to start watching a film in less than 10 seconds after you click the MUBI logo on XMB.
3. Same story. We are working with Dolby on this. Currently surround sound/ DTS has too much information. I could give you surround with low bitrate but I won’t – that’s what people do and it sucks. It will be Stereo for now at high bitrate, and it sounds great.
Thanks.. /efe

How nice, once again lots of questions are answered and everyone skips over the genuine question about accessibility for disabled users (post 14). Why does the world hate me for something I was born with? I attempted to find the answer from your site but no where are subtitles even mentioned, so looks like once again there is a service I want but will be unable to use. I guess I should get used to it.
Posted on 25 August, 2010 at 3:47 am by Efe Cakarel
My apologies. I assumed this was covered with my answer to post 12: “Films will be available in original language with either local or English subtitles.”. Films won’t have close captioning at this stage. We are limited here by what the rightsowners give us. And many of them do not have their films with close captioning. I’m sorry that we don’t have this essential feature with this app. /efe

Thanks, Efe. That sounds good enough for now at this price point so I’ll subscribe at launch to check out especially the picture quality. I would definitely expect higher quality in the future on the audio side.

I find it quite funny how many people are missing the point of MUBI. It’s not a blockbuster rental service, it’s a provider of independent and international film, stuff that can sometimes be quite hard to find and a god send to people who like classics from their own country. And you can do all this without getting off the sofa!
They have also made the point that for each country there is a different distributor so I think they’re doing a pretty good job releasing this in 18 different countries from day one. I look forward to seeing what is available at launch.
