I’ve been a supporter of Insomniac Games ever since I played Spyro the Dragon on the original PlayStation that still sits proudly beneath my TV. Therefore, it was a genuine Pleasure to meet the company’s President, Ted Price, at gamescom in Cologne.
First of all, I was keen to hear how it felt to finally spill the beans on the two PlayStation 3 games, Ratchet & Clank All 4 One and Resistance 3, that they have been secretly working on.
“It’s a relief!” Ted replied. “Our fans are very vocal on the forums about what we’re doing and now we can finally confirm that we are making these games and that they are going to be awesome.”
It has been a huge year for Insomniac Games an I was also set on finding out how important it felt for them to reassure PlayStation fans of their commitment to their big first parties IPs.
“We’ve had such a great relationship with Sony over the years that we felt it very important to remind people that we’re still great partners and that we still have great franchises that we’re working on,” he said. “What we’re going to see what from Ratchet & Clank and Resistance is going to be fresh; I think that we’ve demonstrated that at the SCEE press conference.”
I started asking about Resistance and asked why they have opted to debut the game via a live action trailer.
“That was really to set the tone; to give people a taste of what of what’s coming with Resistance,” he said. I asked whether this is something we can expect to see in the full game but, with a smile, was told that we’re not talking about that.
So, moving onto Ratchet & Clank All 4 One, I asked where the idea of co-operative gameplay was borne.
“Co-operative gameplay is something we have been talking about for a long time. We have experience with co-op with Resistance and it’s a natural fit for Ratchet because there are so many people who love to play Ratchet & Clank games with friends or siblings, and we have so many characters that naturally work well together. However, I have to tell you that this is being made by Insomniac North Carolina and I’m sitting back and helping with advice here and there, but they’re really driving this.”
It was hinted in the press conference that the game would be ‘co-op with a competitive edge’, so I asked Ted to elaborate on this.
“You saw it today where all of the players are collecting bolts and earning points, and we’re not talking about what they’re going to do with what they collect right now, but you can interpret quite a bit from what you see.”
It was there we left. It was a pleasure to meet one of my gaming heroes and I’m in an eternal state of wonder over what Insomniac Games will do next. In case you’re wondering too, here’s another look at the two trailers they released at gamescom:

Ted Price is awesome and judging from that teaser, R3 will be much better than R2.

Come on – there’s no way they’re going to be talking about that at this extremely early stage.

Ted Price is a very humble man , he was behind me doing line to play Killzone 3 at E3 , he sat next to me when we were playing the demo , took a couple of pics with him , told him that Resistance Fall of Man was my first person shooter game and because of its story i started to play other fps games , cant freaking wait for Resistance 3 , what i get from the action trailer is that we are going to play as Capelli ,i hope that we get to play as Hale at some point of the story

He is very nice indeed – he had a cab waiting to take him to dinner when I grabbed him for this interview and he didn’t complain once.

Is Ratchet a full single player experience as well?

Sony are right to allow publishing rights to be picked up by EA. No loss.
If Rachet & Clank was released on a Nintendo console it wouldn’t get half the attention it receives being a PS3 exclusive. Nintendo’s first party games obliterate what Insomanic deliver off their conveyer belt of two year production cycles. If I wanted to play that style of game I would dust off my Wii and load up an array of far better family friendly titles.
Until I see some Resistance 3 gameplay footage I’m not getting my hopes up. Live action cut scenes the new trend? Always following behind it seems. How they managed to release a sequel to a launch title that would have been on a strict deadline and have it turn out inferoior in every single way possible still leaves me puzzled.
The only praise Resistance 2 gained from the real critics, the fans was for the Co-Op component which consisted of holding your finger down on the trigger and each enemy absorbing thousands of rounds of ammunition to their face. To my understanding this was never supported post release, the only DLC I ever saw on the store was multiplayer skins.

If we don’t hear that the weapon wheel is returning, guarantees of visual style that resembles the washed out style of the original, less of a focus and time wasted designing 50 storey monsters that can be defeated with single laark missiles, wide selection of customised unranked online matches offered, among many other complaints I harbour this wont be a game I intend to purchase.

@James the last was 2 years ago and they have been doing one game a year for the last 4 years. this year should have been R3 around November.
So either they haven’t been on it for long and doing other stuff (not R&C) or its nearly ready.

Hey as a celebration of R3 and new R$C announced, you guys should see about getting all the Spyro PS1 games on PSN.
I think only 1 of them are there at PSN store.

I’m excited for both the announcements.
Finally a R&C game with -4 players- cooperative; and the new Resistance that promise to be more dark and survival than the other 2 (and I hope so!).
* clap clap *

I own every Insomniac Game since the PS1 and I am really looking forward to the next releases. I even bought Resistance 1 + 2 just because they are Insomniac Games although normally I would never buy an Egoshooter. Its just not my genre.
There is only 1 thing that really disappointed me. Those 10.000 kills Trophy in Resistance 2 was a boring chore. I dislike online competitive modes and spending over 50 hours there was not particularly a good game experience for me.
I really hope that the Platinum Trophy time requirements for Resistance 3 will be less ridiculous. Look at Uncharted 2… that was a really great idea of how to handle with online trophies.

I care not for Resistance but I love Ratchet & Clank and to have 4 players co op like that is excellent.
@jenotron I disagree entirely. I’ll take R&C over any of the godawful crap Nintendo produce these days. And Nintendo would likely have made it sickenly cute like their Mario games and if I have to ever hear that stupid damn voice again I will even smash up my old NES. I liked Mario until he learned how to talk.

Dear James, I wish I knew you were going to interview Ted. I have a great idea for R3, from my own perspective anyway. What about incorportaing James Grayson into the story of R3 somehow. just have him interact, Work together or plan with R3 Protagonist. This way, we can have a great R-portable sequel with a story that is incorporated in R3. playing the same story, from two perspectives on two different platforms. Does it sound interesting?

sweet, but what about as R&C fans who dont want R&C changed?
just because so many people (reviewers in general) ripped on ACIT being a repeat of other games does not mean it needs to be changed!
as much as i wanted 4 player co-op id much rather a good old traditional R&C game with the humor that made the series famous!
o, insomniac please just do a R&C collection!
R&C 1,2,3, gladiator were the best games you guys have ever made and ill take a leap of faith and say ever will!
o, what i would give to play R&C 1,2,3, gladiator and the 2 PSP games on my ps3 in glorious HD with trophies!

btw I think that Resistance 3 will be out february or march, because the film with tthe billboard releases on the 11th march (same as infamous 2s release date i tihnk?) and as I mentioned infamous 2 I think R3 will release mid feb as I doubt sony want 2 1st party exclusives competing (i’d get both anyway lol) and it won’t be aprl as that is now crysis 2′s delayed release date and it would be a bit stupid to have 2 games about aliens with a similar setting be released…. Also is 2 years into development really that early a stage? The trailer was awesome though! Gameplay next please lol
