For the past couple of months I’ve tried to become an elite jetfighter pilot: dogfighting, bombing targets from amidst the clouds, shadowing stealthy enemies – I’ve done it all. Not in real life though, I’m actually Sorin Muresan, a Community Developer working at Ubisoft Romania. In doing my job I get to rub elbows with the devs and talk with the fans, write news, capture screenshots and videos, organize events and, hardest of all, I have to play a lot of games.
The one I’ve been working on and enjoying lately is H.A.W.X. 2, an aerial combat game that put me through a rollercoaster ride with fireworks going off all around.
From the first cinematic, I got a glimpse of the Tom Clancy storyline: I was in the middle of a world conspiracy with terrorists threatening to use stolen nukes against whoever doesn’t meet their demands. So I got comfortable in my chair and ready to dispense some justice and peace with my trigger finger.
The first mission started me off easy, with a take-off from an airbase to inspect the area around. Piece of cake! Full throttle, pitch up and the sky was the limit! But I would later find out that landing is not a piece of said cake, especially when attempting it at night on an aircraft carrier, even with the onboard computer helping me a little. And it seared a mental note into my brain: always make sure to lower the landing gear before attempting to touch down. I still have no idea how I simply forgot to do this. Twice.
I guess I’ll just blame it on not having had any other aerial combat game to play for quite a while. Nevertheless, there I was, back in the cockpit, refreshing my aircraft piloting skills. While I recognized a lot of the planes from the first HAWX, the way they behaved felt different. With a much more life-like physics engine, I had to scrap some of my old tactics, like flying inverted to have a better view of the ground targets. When I tried this in H.A.W.X. 2, the plane would fall towards the ground and I had to constantly correct the flight path.
But I quickly adapted and evolved so I was flying better and better, ever so close to the edge of control. This was a must during dogfights against some pretty cunning and agile enemies. They evaded my missiles, would often outmaneuver me and seemed to find those sweet spots where I couldn’t get a lock on with the heat-seeking missiles and I had to chisel away at their planes with the cannon.
Even with a more cunning AI, I still got many opportunities to use all of the missiles, rockets and bombs in my arsenal throughout the scenarios. In some missions I got radar guided missiles with which I safely took out enemies from afar. While in other missions, I quickly cleared out entire tank squads with some cluster bombs. And I had some FPS-like fun with the stand-off missiles that I could guide right up to the impact point through their onboard cameras.
As a change of pace, the game also had me fly silent Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) in covert surveillance missions. I marked the ground targets and later on I got to take them out from high in the sky. Those insurgents never saw my precision bombs coming. And in other missions, when the allied ground troops were in trouble, I was dispatched to provide close air support in the AC-130 gunships from which I was operating some very powerful cannons and clearing paths for the advancing squads.
And the more I played, the more I got in return. You’ll know what I mean if you join me in a Team Battle multiplayer match and see how I customized my plane’s weapon loadout through the new Plane Mastery system. The demo’s out already for the PS3, so get it now and practice a little! The game will be cleared for launch in 2 weeks and I’ll be waiting for you in the game lobby.

First!??
anyway care to explain why our version was delayed a week?
was it to fix the god awful voice sync?
Posted on 26 August, 2010 at 2:51 pm by Sorin Muresan
The game has been finished for some weeks now, submitted and approved by Sony. Any delays after that step are actually business related or specific to geographic regions. For example, the USA PS3 players will get the game at the same time as the Xbox 360 players.
And was that an issue you noticed in the demo? Rest assured we’ve polished the game a lot after we built the demo, which happened way back in the beginning of July.

Just a quick question. Is this game all third or first person. I know its just an arcade shooter but I prefer to be inside the cockpit for these types of things.
Posted on 26 August, 2010 at 4:36 pm by Sorin Muresan
You can choose between three camera modes: 3rd person (behind and slightly above the plane), 1st person (can’t see any part of the plane, you sort of are the plane), and cockpit (you can see the interior and move your head around).

Tried the demo, not too keen. I don’t like that I can only control the plane “properly” in 3rd person. In first person it feels sluggish. Pity really as I did enjoy the refuelling and landing the planes. So close, but no cigar yet.
Also, who posts “first” these days? What are you 12?

If you’re referring to the sensation of speed, that is something you can fully sense only when you have reference points close by and a more neutral perspective (POV) on the surroundings. For instance, when taking off, and especially when flying close to the ground during a bombing run, you’ll feel the speed!

First!?
Anyway, I have the first Hawx which was fun, so really no need for this game as the demo is pretty much the same game.
And why spend time making a video showing a game using FMV for 99% of it? Surely if you are proud of your game you should show 100% in game footage? Game play footage?
I also researched this game which lead me to IGN which showed a boring chappy from Ubisoft playing it on a XBOX at E3? Do you think its wise coming on a PS3 Blog when clearly this game was produced and promoted on an XBOX?
Thanks, have good day.

The demo is not the same, try it right after playing the first H.A.W.X. and you’ll feel the differences!
That video is the announcement trailer, we have also released a story trailer and a release trailer is in the works. Meanwhile I’m capturing some in-game footage these days, I’ll release some as soon as possible.
The E3 demo that you saw on IGN was done on Xbox 360s because the PS3 was not yet fully enjoyable at that time due to the differences between the platforms. Also, we were invited by Microsoft to their stand and H.A.W.X. 2 was actually the only Ubisoft game they wanted to feature there.
But no platform was considered a priority, which is only one of the reasons why I’m here. Everybody will get the same quality game. I understand you might have strong feelings about this, but I don’t want to get involved in any console wars.

I tried the demo but it think the controls are to sensitive.. And i had the problem that i was moving my head the way the plane went..
So not really my cup of coffee but i might give it a try.. If i could adjust the sensitivity..
Posted on 26 August, 2010 at 3:33 pm by Sorin Muresan
How sensitive the controls are depends on the plane you’re flying. For instance, the A10-A Thunderbolt II can be flown with more finesse. But the real-life jetfighters that we’ve included in the game are very quick to respond to any input from the pilot. That’s exactly what you need during a dogfight!
When I first played the first H.A.W.X., it took me a short while to get used to the new perspectives (like flying inverted and pulling high-G maneuvers) and I was also tilting my head almost to the point of snapping my neck!

Are you serious so this game is out in the US but the EU has ben left standing in the cold again.. and it is suppose to be SUMMER over here..
Posted on 26 August, 2010 at 3:36 pm by Sorin Muresan
The game isn’t out in the US. Again, these are business decisions and I think you shouldn’t really look too much into them. The US usually sees releases (not just games) on Tuesdays while the EMEA gets them on Thursdays. It’s just how these different markets work.

Maybe I’ll try some low passes on the demo. Then do a flyby past the tower. I feel the need. The need for speed. Pity the night ops tell you to fly high.
If the sense of speed is better you’ve won a sale.
Posted on 26 August, 2010 at 3:39 pm by Sorin Muresan
Do try some high-speed flybys! And that’s not the only night op mission in the game.

We’ve announced the Uplay Actions and Rewards just two days ago. Check the official website! The biggest prize, a new multiplayer map, sounds pretty sweet, right?

I liked the demo, and I’m considering picking up the game. What I liked especially was that there seems to be some decent story, proper briefing cutscenes etc.. That has been missing from most flight games for quite some time. Static briefing menus aren’t enough for me personally.
Is the level of “storytelling” in the demo representative of the full game?
Posted on 26 August, 2010 at 3:58 pm by Sorin Muresan
Most of the plot is conveyed not only through cinematics and briefings, but actually through the more varied missions that have you complete all sorts of different objectives. Besides being fun, the missions also deepen the story.

Thanks for the answers i will give the demo another go.. keep your fingers crossed for me so i won’t snap my neck and go out and buy this game..

Just played a quick mission. It seems I’m still slightly tilting my head sometimes, although not as much as I used to. I guess I still look like some of the pictures from a Google Images search for “curious dog”.

I wanted to know if this game has STATUS updates like MW2 and Super Street Fighter 4 that tells you what your friends are doing eg:HAWX playing team dogfight.
THIS feature is so important.
Posted on 27 August, 2010 at 12:13 pm by Sorin Muresan
In H.A.W.X. 2, you can see what your friends are doing from the friends page.

Although I didn’t really enjoy the first one, I might give this a go…Definitely looks better than the first HAWX…
BTW, Sorin, I can tell you are kind of new to the blog here, so its probably not wise to mention the U.S. getting it first… We will let you away with it for today!
Thanks!

The graphics have been improved and you’ll notice this in the various settings where the action takes place.
Concerning the different release dates for different geographic regions, I’m actually in the same situation as you guys, since I’m also European. And it has caused me some frustration in the past.
But let’s go back to the game. What else do you want to know about it?

tried the demo, can’t say i’m sold… I liked the ace combat games on the ps2, and the controls there seemed much more organic. In the you see the enemy planes pulling some dubious moves like pitching up to a 90 degree vertical climb with a snap instead of a progressive curve. i know you’re not going for a sim but somethings shouldn’t be ignored when it comes to how the planes behave (angle of attack limitations) and how a pilot would react like with black outs.
If i had to choose between hawx and an old ace combat game, the oldie would prevail, even if hawx has the whole tom clancy storytelling behind it, i prefer the better aesthetic and slightly greater realism of ace combat
