‘Heads-Up’ Game Store Update (18th August 2010)

PlayStation Store

Good Afternoon everyone, I hope you’re all well and full of the joys of Summer. Mike has jetted off to Cologne with the Gamescom crew to round up a new herd of PSN games for the coming months, which leaves it to me to bring you the latest goodies.

A quiet week this week since everyone who’s anyone is at the big GC, but we’ve got a few nice bits and pieces for you to tide you over into September. We have brand new demos of EA’s NHL 11 and Ubisoft’s H.A.W.X.2 for the PS3 crowd, along with a host of new add-ons for some great games.

As Richard already told you last week, Uncharted 2 gets a new skin pack, adding some more multiplayer characters for you to choose from (and don’t forget the dynamic theme). We’ve got two new characters for you to launch from your PAIN-a-pults, including Sergeant Jay and Jolly the Elf, (we figured August was the ideal time to give you a Christmas themed character). The final set of Marvel costumes releases this week as well, including Hulk, who I’ve heard is fond of smashing.

Six new PSP Essentials join the others on the Store, including a brand new digital release of Open Season, plus the latest LittleBigPlanet kits.

The real stars of the show this week are the oodles of Gamescom trailers we’ve got for you in glorious high-definition. All the big hitters are present and correct, with new trailers for KillZone 3, Motorstorm: Apocalypse, inFamous 2 and LittleBigPlanet 2, but don’t forget to check out the PlayStation Move line up too – you’ve not got long left to save your pennies and hopefully these trailers will help you choose which titles to grab come launch day. May I suggest Sports Champions? Disc Golf is an office favourite.

That’s all for now, your comments are appreciated as ever and I’ll be here this afternoon to field them. Until next time, adios!

gamescom Diary: Day One

Countries: , , , ,

As gamescom 2010 begins its assault on our senses, we’ve already been witness to staggering number of games set to create a stir on PlayStation for the year and beyond. Two conferences were the order of the day, the first kicking things off with a massive Electronic Arts showing.

In an impressively large – and often ear-bleedingly loud – auditorium, the company unleashed a range of titles. Among a massive selection, including a startlingly good trailer for magical role playing game Dragon Age II, some rather special visuals from first person shooter Crysis 2 which showed off an intense multiplayer session, news of FIFA 11 featuring an 11 vs 11 gameplay (as well as the chance to train as a goalkeeper so you’ll have no excuse for butterfingers if you’re the man between the sticks) and the debut showing of The Sims 3 on PS3.

However, the stars of the show came in the glittering shape of two of the company’s most eagerly awaited titles. The big news everyone dared to dream about finally came into reality as BioWare’s acclaimed sci-fi adventure game, Mass Effect 2, was announced for PlayStation 3, due for launch in January 2011. BioWare Group General Manager, Dr Ray Muzyka only had one thing to say about the announcement, which came with some slick games footage and then thunderous applause: “That’s frigging awesome”. Can’t argue with that.

Spine-tingling sci-fi horror Dead Space 2 also took some well earned plaudits, with an incredibly attractive demo showing the series’ star Isaac Clarke taking on some zero gravity as he navigated through space debris towards a colossal space station. Amazing lighting effects and a booming yet atmospheric sound stage made the announcement of a 28 January 2011 launch seem all too far away. Oh, and did we mention that the PS3 version will come in a limited edition pack which includes PS Move compatible title, Dead Space: Extraction, in full High Definition?

The double team of EA and Sony Computer Entertainment became even clear during SCEE’s press conference which followed immediately after, leaving little time to catch our breath (luckily both centres were right next to each other) – as Medal of Honor took part in the SCEE presentation to show off the news of Linkin Park contributing to the game’s soundtrack, while the group’s vocalist Mike Shinoda blazed through a level which saw him taking up the controls of a heavily armoured attack chopper. To top things off, EA announced that Medal of Honor: Frontline would feature in a special limited edition version of the PS3 game.

There were plenty of SCEE titles which impressed too, as the unveiling of Insomniac Games’ Resistance 3 and Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One took everyone by surprise. While not much was shown of Resistance 3, the mysterious teaser video hinted at what you’d want from the first person shooter series – more action, more horror, more Chimera, set across a despairing and desolate backdrop that simply dripped with atmosphere. Closer to the opposite end of the tonal spectrum, sci-fi adventure Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One was a tad more humorous, boasting four player drop-in/drop-out co-operative action for the first time in the series as you choose between the titular heroes, Dr Nefarious and the bumbling Captain Qwark. A lovely demo showed off the sort of livewire co-operative play we can expect in 2011, with puzzles, platforms and boisterously big bosses to contend with.

SCEE president Andrew House also made a big show of the imminent PlayStation Move motion controller and stereoscopic 3D, both of which offered new game experiences – whether it’s racing through the lavish tracks of Gran Turismo 5 (which hits PS3 November), ripping through the Helghast in Killzone 3 or slamming home a winning shot in Virtua Tennis 4. Phew.

We’re barely scratching the surface of what’s at gamescom 2010, which means there’s plenty more to enjoy. Keep reading for more reports fresh from the show floor.

Ratchet And Clank: All 4 One Coming To PS3

Countries: , , , ,

Hi everyone. My name is Chad Dezern and I’m the Studio Director at Insomniac Games‘ North Carolina studio. I’m here to share some exciting news. We’ve been hammering away in our secret shack in the middle of the woods since January 2009. Now it’s time to emerge into the sunlight and hold our creation aloft. It’s alive!

We’re excited to announce that we’re hard at work on the first ever one-to-four player cooperative, online/offline, drop-in/drop-out Ratchet & Clank title, Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One!

We knew from our earliest meetings that we wanted to give players a chance to play in the Ratchet Universe with Ratchet and Clank at the same time. And after we started, we felt an almost moral obligation to include Captain Qwark and Dr. Nefarious; there was just too much comedy potential in bringing this group together for us to pass up the opportunity. Their bumbling idiocy, prickly antagonism, and unfettered evil was a perfect reflection of how we play All 4 One here in the office. I’m looking forward to telling the story of how the four of them find themselves together . . .

Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One [Gamescon 2010]

The game is about cooperative play through and through. We want to make it easy to get together with friends and family, get in a game and have fun in the Ratchet universe. We’re working hard to capture the feeling of fighting through amazing battles with other players, whether they are on the couch next to you or playing online half-a-world away.

Our official reveal happened at the PlayStation Press Conference during gamescom in Cologne, Germany. We will be following up with a panel at Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle on September 4. There, I’ll be joined by other Insomniacs: North Carolina Production Director Shaun McCabe, Senior Writer TJ Fixman, and Senior Community Manager James Stevenson. We’ll talk about all things Ratchet (including comics and action figures), and we’ll show all of the content from our announcement.

We can’t wait to show you more of the game. We feel like the game we want to make lines up perfectly with the game our fans want to see–the time is right for Ratchet coop! Keep an eye out for more info in the coming months. Don’t miss a thing: follow @InsomniacGames on Twitter, and sign up for our community and newsletter on InsomniacGames.com to stay up-to-date with new announcements.

So long for now, we’ll talk more soon.
