Today at IFA 2010 in Berlin, Sony announced that Music Unlimited Powered by Qriocity, a cloud-based digital music service, will be coming to PlayStation 3 later this year.
The service will give you access to millions of songs that are stored and synchronised through the cloud and can be accessed via PS3, BRAVIA TVs, Blu-ray Disc players, Blu-ray Home Theatre systems and VAIO computers, with one single account and without the need to manage digital files.
Further details, including exactly when and in which countries Music Unlimited Powered by Qriocity will launch, will be announced soon.
“We are excited to offer our customers high quality, cloud-based entertainment experiences across many of Sony’s network-enabled devices,” said Kazuo Hirai, President of Networked Products & Services Group, Sony Corporation. “Services ‘powered by Qriocity’ will revolutionize the way that users play, listen, watch, share, communicate, learn, discover and create their digital entertainment content.”
We’ll share any further details here on the PlayStation Blog as and when we receive them.

I´m sure it won´t be in the Netherlands and I don´t care.
I can´t listen to my music while I´m on PSN, or home and I don´t turn on my PS3 for music.
It is typical Japanese copy, past strategie. They like Itunes, they copy Itunes. So sad…

@ JHips
Notice how Vidzone starts stuttering whenever that annoying banner comes up, even on optimal/low streaming. If we could disable the banner…

Please don’t forget to make it available to Morocco among the first countries. I am reminding you in advance so that you have enough time to do it.

Oh wow… “1 million songs”.. but just not in Belgium, Netherlands, etc right?
Another great Sony service for the select few. Been waiting for a year for the Video Store to arrive… and the Comic Store. And now this.
The eternal wait continues.

sounds a pretty good idea. a couple of the websites are saying that this service brings streaming video to the ps3? any confirmation of this because if it does i am in instantly. i’m going to sign up to MUBI but also want a service which would allow me to stream more recent releases and this sounds like it will fill the void. fingers crossed. nice idea, but if it is just the music i may not subscribe as i only have a PS3 no sony laptop and plus i have 25k songs on my own laptop which i can stream wirelessly to my stereo so have no real need for this app.

i’d like to know how its going to be impented to make it unique to the PSN. Say for eample can i stream the music into a game that has customer soundtracks. while it be included in plus service. will it have dedicated app on the XMB. How much is it gonna cost?

I… I have a feeling that this is sort of the same thing as Spotify but started by a bigger brand can certainly give you one hell of a start. I was hoping for Spotify to hit the PS3 though. .___.

France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK, although it’s mentioning the video store I imagine it will be one application for those countries

So, is Qriocity a replacement or an addition to the Movie store? Streaming of movies would be good, but I echo other comments here that VidZone’s streaming recently appears to have gotten worse, so I worry what the quality of this service will be like.
Also I am interested in costs of this. A good idea would be to include this in the PS+ service, at least the music part anyway. A hook to get customers in and good value for the community.

@Pamperdamps,
Sounds like you have a bad internet connection. The other guy who talks about vidzone buffering is from Australia which is notorious for slow internet and vidzone never buffers on my 20meg line on highest quality setting.
73
Posted on 2 September, 2010 at 10:34 am by Bodyinabox
@JHips
I VERY much doubt you have a 1500MB/second line. I doubt it even exists in Australia so you’ve probs got a corrupt version of VidZone

Would be nice to have it on the PSP too….

Posted on 2 September, 2010 at 11:04 am by Pamperdamps
@Bobinabox, I have about 3.5MB which used to be fine for VidZone. These days it seems to constantly buffer. This seems to be more prevalent when I use the TV channels, but not so much when I use the On demand service. Weird huh!

Seriously, why post stuff as news if you don’t know any details or anything at all related with it?
After reading hal comments page i stopped because there’s a lack of replys and when you reply only thing you can say is “i don’t know…”.
If you where a seller you would be fired in secs just to say that short sentence.
Next time please learn about what you’re posting before posting so you can clear up real doubts, otherwise this is just another article flooding the blog.

I’m not a ‘seller’. This is news, as you can tell from just about every other major gaming site picking up on it. And it’s not a case of me learning or doing more research, it’s that NOBODY knows too many details about this service yet, other than the people working very closely on it, as they possibly haven’t even been finalized.

Fun fact: Switzerland has music videos through Vidzone and Movies through MUBI. So third parties are able to provide this service….but sony, which OWNS countless music labels and movie studios cant get this working! [DELETED]

I don’t get it.
Is it an audio only vidzone, or a bandwidth eating, power hungry, over expensive radio?

Okay, I think it’s time to submit ALL of our ideas for this service about Music Unlimited onto PlayStation Blog.Share, quickly before the service becomes massive!
Even though they can simply update it, I want them working on our ideas as quickly as possible =P

The arrogance in your reply fits you well i must say, that’s a shame you know but hey as European and specially Portuguese i’m used to that kind of treatment from you guys. Really shame.

A nice, iTunes type GUI would be welcome, instead of the retarded music folder system in place, with the ability to tag properly and support for lossless formats. Forget ‘clouds’ and streaming, any serious muso will buy the CD first anyway. Having a proper app on the PS3 to store your CDs is a priority.

Don’t forget that Qriocity has over 4,000 film titles as well. This beats having to go to block busters to look over the same 2,000 films ever week! What I am not sure about is wheather Google TV will be turned off (Not supported) in the new 3D TV’s. Currently Sony’s 3D TV support Qriocity and Google TV. This seams a little odd, as they both provide the same service… Can anyone provide any insights into this, all my requests to Sony have fallen on deaf ears.
