Hello again! This is Ollie Barder from doublesix. Since I spoke here last, the studio has been really busy with Top Gun – a new air combat game for the PlayStation Network based on the classic 80′s film. Needless to say it’s been a lot of fun making this, as screeching across a blue sky in a F-14 Tomcat never gets old.
For those curious as to how we’ve tackled the game we went down a more arcade focused route for air combat, more so than other games in the genre. So instead of having to micromanage finite ammunition, stalling and the vagaries of an overly complex flight model, we’ve streamlined all that down and removed as many restrictions as we possibly could. The reasoning behind this was so that the player would be able to focus on just enjoying the combat and shooting down planes with either guns or missiles. This means things like your health replenishes over time and your guns won’t ever overheat. We wanted to give people the freedom to fly through a blue sky and basically get to feel like a fighter ace.
Following on from that, we were really keen to get the atmosphere and tone of the film into the game and make all of that nicely functional too. From using the same HUD elements as you see in the film (such as the missile lock), to your co-pilot spouting one liners each time you down an enemy – it’s all there to tie into the game’s functional feedback. In fact, we had Jack Epps, Jr., the original screenwriter for the Top Gun movie, write the script for the game to maintain the feel and attitude of the Top Gun property. Naturally, the game features the wonderfully nostalgic “Danger Zone” too as well the Top Gun theme.
The final element that we thought that would make all this gel was the addition of Controlled Flight Instability (or just CFI), as this acts as both a target camera and modifier to the flight model so you can pull much quicker turns mid-air. This came from that annoying habit of players in multiplayer doing loops to avoid being shot, CFI basically means the enemy has nowhere to hide now.
From 11 campaign missions, a horde mode and 16 player online multiplayer (with 5 modes) there’s quite a fair amount of content for a digital download game. You may also play as any one of six different jets: the US Navy’s F-14, F-16, or F/A-18 or the enemy’s MiG-29, MiG-31, or Su-27 We even support a custom button mapping for Saitek’s Aviator flightstick too. We all hope that people enjoy the game as much as we have had making it and always remember, you can be our wingman any day.
Top Gun will be available from PlayStation Store on Wednesday 8 September

This game should be free for PSN+

I’m afraid, as we’re only the developer, that’s out of our control – sorry!

Hope this won’t be more than £6-7, as it’s not reviewed all that well and has the classic afterburner to contend with.

@3 this is just a ploy to knock the plus post off the front page and hide all the neglect

Looks cool, as long as it’s sub £9.99 then I’ll pick it up.
I’m a sucker for “Highway to the Danger Zoooooooone!”

Will it have the same homo erotic theme running through it that the film did?

Will it have a demo/trial? When it comes to PSN games, trying before buying is a must for me.
Posted on 3 September, 2010 at 12:45 pm by Ollie Barder
There’s no demo for the game I’m afraid, again that wasn’t our call.

If you had released this in this week’s PSN update (or last week’s when it went live in the US), I’d have bought it straight away. But now you’re releasing it the day before I’ll be getting HAWX 2 so I’m not going to have much time on it before what will obviously be a better/bigger experience comes out; so now I’ll be waiting until it’s either reduced or free through PSN+ to pick this up.
I’d say a lot of people will be doing the same, so you’ve lost a lot of money by delaying the European release.
Posted on 3 September, 2010 at 12:37 pm by Ollie Barder
We didn’t get to pick the release dates I’m afraid, either in the US or in Europe.

@3 I think it’s up to the developer/publisher if a game is free for PSN+.So unless these guy’s say so.or there is a contract that they sign up to that states, after a certain number of months on the store, it can be offered to plus user.
Maybe that’s why the number of content has been a little weak on psn this year.
Posted on 3 September, 2010 at 12:38 pm by Ollie Barder
Actually, PSN+ is down to the publisher. We only developed the game this time (unlike Burn Zombie Burn, where we both developed and published the game).

If there Is a demo of the game I will try It out first. Before I buy the full game.

@12
I think it’s more likely that Plus users FREE content is based on what isn’t selling and how old is it rather then any timed specifics.

@5: Sure, that’s always the reason why we get new blog posts on the blog, to “hide” the “failed” attemps before.

Same weekend as HAWK2 though, bad choice of release dates?
Posted on 3 September, 2010 at 12:39 pm by Ollie Barder
As I said above, we didn’t get to choose the date. That was the publisher’s call.

Ace Combat X on PSP looks better than this
Posted on 3 September, 2010 at 12:44 pm by Ollie Barder
Not sure I agree with that, plus the PSP Ace Combat games cost three to four times more than Top Gun (X had no online multiplayer either).

I Dont understand why people say it should be “Free for Plus” members, new releases should never be free Plus Member or not plus member, this would actually make sony and not the Developer rich, because then all have plus membership, and the Developer dont get [DELETED].
Ollie im not a big fan of Fly-Simulator Games, because they are hard to control without sticks … this reason is i dont buy H.A.W.X etc .. but as i have seen or watch i believe Top Gun is more Arcade Controlled so its more simple ? … I have looking forward to this since it was published as a Release earlier this year, but now its almost here it can not go fast enough to get it. I havent been able to get it from US store because of some Sony Issue adding money, so i just wait another week to get it from my EU account
.. Great Work Ollie.
And Ollie next time dont explain your self to people about “Why, Why” its just people who dont want to check there facts and know how it works with digital publishing.
You guys have done a great job.

Thanks!
As for the game, it’s a more arcade and simpler flight combat game. So similar to HAWX but without a lot of the micromanagement as I said in the piece above.

The publisher didn’t want to release a demo or Sony? I was kind of interested in the game but it hasn’t reviewed that well. A demo may have persuaded me. Might have put me right off as well I guess but no demo pretty much guarantees I won’t get it.

@ollie I don’t think Ace combat ever needed online MP, the SP just never gets old in those games (also I prefer AC’s made up world and events over those based on a movie)
I’m not really too interested in this, That’s just my personal opinion though
Posted on 6 September, 2010 at 10:00 am by Ollie Barder
Well, the point Bilouze was making was that Ace Combat X on the PSP looked better than Top Gun – which I don’t agree with. I added the comment on MP as an aside to show that this game also has more content (for less!) than Ace Combat X did.
