Hello, fellow PlayStation fans. We’re really excited to bring you Flight Control HD on the PlayStation Network. You will be the first people able to experience Flight Control on the big screen! If you haven’t come across Flight Control on other platforms, it’s a really simple but elegant game that invented a new genre, combining path mechanics and time management. It’s also incredibly addictive.
3D? In Flight Control?
Believe it or not, the stereoscopic 3D mode in Flight Control HD has some real benefits. It helps to separate the important action (the planes in the air) from the landscape, which is more distant. You can play any map in 3D mode, which feels like looking into a diorama or a snow globe. You can also easily switch back to 2D to enjoy full 1080p HD resolution.
How do you control it?
Flight Control HD supports both PlayStation Move and DUALSHOCK controllers. We weren’t really expecting the Move controller to work so well, but it’s incredibly precise! You simply move or point the controller, hold the trigger or Move button to select a plane and then trace its path to the correct runway.
The DUALSHOCK controller was a tricky one to get right and our coders spent a lot of time on this. The magic was in finding the right speed and acceleration for your selection cursor, combined with some subtle targeting magnets and a few other tricks to make the controls really natural. Anyone familiar with the analog sticks should find it easy. You can mix and match different controllers any way you want in multiplayer – they all work together.
Collaborative Multiplayer
We’re calling our multiplayer mode “collaborative”, but the way much of our own games turned out at the studio, I think collaborative is a very loose term. Each player can join or leave a game at any time and the idea is to work together to land as many planes as possible. It can get pretty crazy; we found that the best way was to assign very specific duties to avoid everyone going for the same plane.
However if you ignore a problem in another player’s domain then it could be game over for everyone, so the temptation to mess with their area is huge. Of course if you do have designated areas of control, at least you will know who to blame if there is a crash!
Here are a few Controller Archetypes we discovered during our extensive “testing” sessions:
- Control Freaks absolutely must grab every single plane but rarely do anything useful with them, leaving others to tidy up in their wake.
- The Ace leans back on the sofa looking far too relaxed (which really bothers everyone else). Somehow he manages to never crash.
- The Tourist always takes the scenic path and draws long, meandering loops. You’re dying to correct his paths because it kills you that they are not optimally efficient.
- You’ve just drawn a perfect path. The planes will zip past each other with sublime elegance, shaving dangerously close in optimum trajectories with mere millimeters to spare… except that the Backseat Pilot rips apart your brilliant paths because he is convinced that the planes will crash.
- The Field Marshall is so busy barking instructions at everyone else that he doesn’t watch his own planes and causes a crash. Usually has a very red face by the end of the game.
- The OMGer continuously yells “omg! omg! omg!”, and may also bounce up and down on the sofa.
So, over to you – let us know what your Flight Control “collaborators” get up to!

It’s a pretty fun game while it lasts. But 5 euro’s for this piece of iPhone minigame is way too overpriced. 2 euro’s would’ve been a fair price.

I was very pleasantly surprised at how well move work with the game; it’s really relaxing and frees you up to concentrate on the onscreen action. Well done Firemint!

@MrLopes
You can actually speed things up using the arrow at the bottom left of the screen.

I love this game on my iPhone… but 5 euro is too much indeed! Why would I buy a game which I’ve already bought on another device? OK it’s HD… but that’s not worth 5 euro’s… so just waiting for the price to go down to let’s say 1 euro

Already bought it, already love it. It’s worth noting that Flight Control HD allows custom music. Just pop onto your in-game XMB and select a song. Kenny Loggins’ Danger Zone anyone?

Purchased this yesterday – it works great with the Move controller – very precise and intuative and super fun, but crikey does this get tricky fast. Great value at £4.
Shameless plug of my full Move impressions: http://www.consolemonster.com/newspost.php?id=0000007323

Why isn’t there more fanfare about Move. I haven’t seen a single ad on TV. This is the first post today about it, and today is launch day in the UK.
I know there is bits on the blog earlier in the week for the other country launches. Surely us Brits should be given a little more of a push today.
Its a good product so come on Sony market it!

I bought this on Wednesday and played it with the DS3 which works very well, found myself becoming very addicted to it very quickly!
But I got Move yesterday, and the game works fantastically well with it. The best bit? Try playing it by yourself with two Move controller and see how long before your brain starts to melt lol

Hi James
Thanks for replying. Not saying there isn’t any Move stuff, just a lack of it today. I am hyped for Move and because it launches in Blighty today I expected the Blog to be full of new Move related content.
Please don’t be offended by my rant, I am just exited and want it to be a success.
I’ll try your suggestion for the Plus icon!

I bought this yesterday in anticipation of playing around with my new Move controller today. TheSixthAxis convinced me to buy it with their great review. So I fire it up and was seriously impressed. It’s such a simple concept really but once you’ve got 10+ planes on screen the game really shines, it gets quite difficult playing by yourself. It’s very addictive trying to beat your high score.
I highly recommend this game to anyone looking for something else to try out with their Move. If you don’t have a Move, the Dualshock controls are very good too, it’s pretty easy to trace paths for each plane.
I love the music (sounds very 50′s to me) and the sound effects too, all around a very good package ^^.

Bought this for the sake of £4 and love it, it’s a simple yet addictive little puzzler and had has that ‘just one more go’ feeling when you try and beat your previous score or get higher on the leaderboard.
I can’t even imagine playing this game with a traditional controller though, it works so well with Move – the accuracy is incredible and it’s just so intuitive and natural to draw the lines on the screen. It’s a brilliant use of the tech and makes it easy and fun to play.
I recommend this game to anyone as it’s a bargain for £4, but if you have a Move controller it’s an essential purchase!

Great little game that works very nicely with the Move. I also can’t imagine playing it with a DS3. It’s also pretty ideal for short gaming sessions.

Oh boy. I bought this. It’s so simple, and yet so stupidly, maddeningly addictive.
It was great with the DualShock3, but when I got my Move yesterday it became even better.
I know this sounds stupid, but I have to be honest – if you buy this game for £3.99 and enjoy it, it is TOTALLY worth buying a Move just to play this game – it WILL improve your game.

I would recommend PS+ users not bother downloading new releases. We dont get compensated if we already have the game, when its eventually released for +

I love this, and it’s great fun. Like it much more than on iPhone, very smooth controls (great pointer, and great assists) and the multi-player modes are very good. It’s almost impossible to find fault with this game. Perhaps I would have liked friend’s list leaderboards visible as soon as I’ve selected a map to play on (and after I’ve done playing), but that’s about it!

i hear you gr0undp0und, the reason i am not going to waste my time with ps+ is because i already have a considerable amount of psn games, so the ps+ would be a total waste of time by offering games i already have at marginally lower prices, the problem is anyone who has already purchased the items that interest them on psn, its not worth them going ps+ and the new releases still dont make it worth it because the vast majority of + offers are on old games i already have
