Hi everyone – I’m afraid I need to share some news from Media Molecule about the release date of LittleBigPlanet 2…
LittleBigPlanet 2 is a crazy dream, a dream to allow players to make whatever kind of game they want, but also to play though a great adventure of drama and excitement, power-ups and cinematics. But like all the most ambitious ideas, it can be a considerable challenge to turn these dreams in fun games. We’ve all been working like powered-up space ninjas and we’re almost there, but because we love what we’ve made, and we love our little sack-friends, and most of all we love all our fans out there, we couldn’t let you all get together until we knew we were giving you the best experience imaginable. Which is why we’ve taken the hard decision to delay the worldwide release of LittleBigPlanet 2, originally slated for later this year to January 2011.
We know this will come as disappointing news for all you LittleBigPlanet fans, and believe us, we are disappointed too. We are a tight-knit team and we take enormous pride in our work, so to raise the bar we’ve set with the original LittleBigPlanet, a game that has been so embraced by all, we’ve agreed to allow ourselves a bit more time to deliver the experience that our great fans and community deserve. We are truly sorry, but hope you understand that we have to build the best possible game, as it is the foundation of our community.
On the upside, we are going to find a way to give more of you a taste of LBP2 prior to launch, so stay tuned.
Thanks for your continued love and support, it won’t be long – we promise.
Lots of love from all at Mm.
All of us here are obviously disappointed that you won’t be able to get your hands on LBP 2 until January. But with LittleBigPlanet being one of the most innovative – and fun – franchises around, we do believe that it’s essential that the sequel lives up to your expectations, and to the reputation established by the award-winning first game. LBP 2 is an incredibly ambitious and exciting game; I know that waiting can seem hard, but when it launches in January I’m certain you’ll be able to see just how much further the bar has been raised.

I know it’s disappointing – but at least I can cheer you up a little by letting you know that LBP 2 will indeed be localised into Polish.

Thats a let down. The Beta is so awesome. I guess if it improves the game it will be a good thing in the end
Posted on 23 September, 2010 at 10:47 am by Alex Pavey
I’m glad you’ve been enjoying the Beta – everyone here has been impressed with some of the amazing creations that have been uploaded already.
There’s no doubt that this news (although I know it’s a let down) will mean that LBP 2 is just as amazing as people would expect – so it will be worth it in the end.

There are plenty of good games being released before the end of this year, so this might be a good thing.
LBP2 will get my fullest attention in January!

We are looking into a number of ways to give as many people as we can a taste of LBP 2 before it launches – so stay tuned for more info on that soon.

Read between the lines :
“Christmas is simply to strong a time to try and compete for sales with the likes of COD, MOH, Halo Reach, GT5 and other top titles, we will take are chances in the New Year because no one releases a game in January!”
Posted on 23 September, 2010 at 10:56 am by Alex Pavey
Sackboy doesn’t fear anyone
And it’s actually pretty busy with great releases early next year too as it happens. This delay, disappointing as it is, is purely about making sure everyone gets the LBP 2 that they deserve.

End of this year was becoming expensive, so thanks for the reprieve.
No worries about the delay, just ensure the ‘quality’ of LBP is preserved thanks to this delay. You guys at Mm have already shown your dedication to releasing great content with continued and vast support (that would shame others), so it is nice to see you take the difficult decision to preserve this.
Posted on 23 September, 2010 at 10:50 am by Alex Pavey
Thanks for your understanding, Danlisa. You’re right – difficult as the decision was, Media Molecule have set very high standards with all their previous content, and there’s no way that either Mm or SCEE would be prepared to compromise on that.

It’s better to wait a couple of months than get a deficient product.
Posted on 23 September, 2010 at 11:07 am by Alex Pavey
Cheers for your understanding soidut – there’s no way that we’d want to release LBP 2 until it’s anything less than perfect, especially given all the commitment the fans have shown.

It’s okay there is alot of otheres games to play but why is the beta frezzing
when im trying to use the Sackbot, where is the place to report this

On your original invitation to join the beta trial, there should be a link to the Beta Trial forum where you can discuss any issues you’ve noticed.

Btw, is this means beta will be longer?

@14: much longer…

After all the Christmas releases have faded away like New Year’s Eve’s cider, champagne, or whatever you drink, it’s good to have a release like LBP2 to look forward too. These things happen all the time, and if it makes LBP2 even better, there’s no reason to complain. We can wait a little longer for a new Sacky game!

when its released in January 2011 will the UK get the collectors edition that was showcased for the US? (plush, game/book ends and dlc)
btw kudos on the game so far, the beta is amazing!

Thanks for your understanding – but we’ll make sure that we don’t make you wait TOO much longer, we promise!

I love what I’ve seen from LBP2 so far in the beta and if it takes an extra couple of months to make sure everything’s sweet, I’m more than happy to wait.
Posted on 23 September, 2010 at 11:06 am by Alex Pavey
That’s great to hear you like what you’ve seen in the Beta – and that’s just a taste of everything that’s going to be in there when the final game launches. Like you say – we just need to make sure that everything’s sweet

ppl are so gullible: yes we wait, don‘t mind to wait because…….
we are used to WAIT we waiting for resi evil series that May be resolved.
We Wait for other Ps1 classics to be on Par with scea is that to much to Ask.
we wait till Next year for big features to be announce at E3/Gamescom.
Lastly We wait for plus members to get into a beta but again it not 100% for you to get it, it more like a Draw Lots a select,
Not please :‘(
Posted on 23 September, 2010 at 11:17 am by Alex Pavey
Hi Skookie30 – the current beta trial was arranged to test some specific functionality, and it was necessary to limit the nummber of people who could access it. But as I said above, we are looking into various ways to give more fans the chance to get a taste of LBP 2 before launch, so stay tuned.

This seems like a massive blow – LBP2 is the perfect family game and was on a lot of Christmas Lists already, it should have been the poster boy of Sony’s christmas lineup!
This is probably going to be a costly delay for Sony and I can’t believe they don’t have the spare resource to get it out a month earlier – LBP2 is ideal Christmas present material and now a lot of potential casual buyers will probably defer the purchase to their childs birthday when it’ll already be in the bargain bins.
Unless it was serious you’d have been better off releasing it and then patching it in January.
Also there’s already a quite a few big games coming out in January already, why is January the new Christmas all of a sudden?

#23: Yes, we are used to waiting, and used to get less than US. However, I’m sure this delay is GLOBAL, so the Americans will have to wait too!
Posted on 23 September, 2010 at 11:18 am by Alex Pavey
You’re correct, this delay is a global one, so no one will be getting the game earlier than anyone else.

It couldn’t have been an easy decision to make but I know you guys will put this time to good use.
It’s not that a long a wait in the grand scheme of things but appreciate the time you took to bring it to our attention and thanks for explaining to us.
Keep up the good work MM!

Thanks for your understanding – I know that everyone here, and at Media Molecule, appreciates it.

I have an idea!!!
Let’s call the game in the future LBDP!!! (Little Big Dissapointment Planet) LOL!
Come on people…….it’s not the end of the world! The longer the game takes to be released, the better it will be! It’s for our own pleasure.
Posted on 23 September, 2010 at 11:47 am by Alex Pavey
Thanks Outofathens – you’re right, we have made this decision so that you guys get the best possible game. But we do understand why people are disappointed, too – everyone here knows what it feels like when you find out you’ve got to wait a little longer for something you’ve been really looking forward to.

Who ever decided to push LBP2 date back should get a payrise.
Smartest thing Mm could of ever done, there’s no way they could of competed
with Black Ops & Assassins Creed Brotherhood in the same month. No way in hell.
Great news because now LBP will finally get the sales figures it deserves.

Few months delay is not a problem at all… Yes we look forward to the game but I would prefer quality over early release. I support you guys, and I know you have a small development team, and it is actually amazing how much you pulled out from such a small team. And, I also like you are actively communicate to us, so no disappointment at all!
One wish though, please increase the layers in LBP2 from 3 to 6 or more. It will give us lot more freedom to create…maybe it is all a question of complexity in the end … but a wish. Would be splendid start of 2011 with LBP2.

This makes me sad, but it’s also great news. It means they’re taking aboard beta information and doing their best to make it even better.
This also means that next year will be jam packed full of awesomeness.
LBP2, then KZ3 and Portal 2. Then we have inFamous 2, Arkham City, Sotc/ICO Collections, finishing with The Last Guardian. I also have fingers crossed that Uncharted 3 gets announced and released next year, as well as Rising being released next year too. It’s going to be a hell of a year for gaming, especially if you have a PS3.
Alex, since you’ve made us sad with this news, could please let us know if we’re getting the same collector’s edition as the US? Hell, are we getting *A* collector’s edition?

I can get over the whole ‘we want to deliver the best experience’ excuse, but time and again, PS3 fans have been made to wait longer than they should for titles that matter to them. GT5 has taken an eon to finally reach the public, and in the run up to Christmas, it seems a little dubious to say the least that Media Molecule won’t be in the rat race. When MW2 released, many other publishers pushed release dates back as they knew they couldn’t compete, but with such a strong brand as LBP, I’m not just disappointed – I’m angry. November 16th is so close, it’s hard to concieve that there could be so much work yet to be done to this game that more time is required? Delivering the best possible experience should also equate to a timely release, especially considering the hype generated in the past months. A PSN update would surely have sufficed.
You know what? Being forced to wait, as much as it upsets me, is probably a good thing. I’m gonna tack on another two to three months, by choice, and when I do purchase a copy it will be a PRE- OWNED copy. Sorry, Mm, you just lost a sale thanks to your really bad pitch.
Two thumbs down. My Christmas money is on GT5 – you made that decision easy for me. Thanks!

Posted on 23 September, 2010 at 11:33 am by Carnivius_Prime
Disappointing. I was really hoping for that to be the big christmas game for the family get-together and to me it was the main game I wanted to buy. There really isn’t a lot of other promising stuff coming out at that time (the same old boring FPS games usually). I understand you have reasons to delay it but it just seems a really lousy thing to have to do. I’ve really enjoyed the Beta (though since moving home I’ve never been able to have multiplayer in it despite it working in other games fine) and am still looking forward to it.
42
Posted on 23 September, 2010 at 11:35 am by NRX1000
Those of us who have been waiting for GT5 have become immune to game release delays, a few extra weeks to polish an already stunning looking LBP2 really isn’t a problem.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I can’t get angry with you guys(or Sack-boy)
tho because i love LBP so much
+ there is no point crying about it people because it will be even better with the extra time they spend on it.

The Sackboy on the t-shirt I’m wearing while reading this looks happy. How inappropiate of you Sackster!
Anyway, LBP2 was the game I was looking forward to the most this fall. Now it will be the one I look forward to the most for 2011. Well, at least there is less coming out then so I’m won’t be bothered I’m not finishing al those other great games because I’m constantly tweaking me levels or playing the story over and over to nail every part en catch every bubble. January 11 is oficially Sackuary 11 now!

I think Sackboy’s smiling because he appreciates how understanding all the fans are being about this news

I understand that people are upset, and especially those who were looking forward to playing with the whole family during Christmas break. But I’m sure they’re doing this for a very good reason. Imagine how upset you would have been if they had released a buggy game! The option of patching that someone suggested is not really an option. We all want games as free from bugs as they can be, right?
I don’t know what games will be released later this year, but maybe someone can give tips for upcoming, family-friendly games?
Oh, I know one such game, it’s just been released. Tumble, for Move! It’s absolutely brill!
Posted on 23 September, 2010 at 11:51 am by Alex Pavey
Thanks for being so undestanding, tm2010swe – and that’s a really helpful and considerate suggestion to make. I agree with you – Tumble is great fun!

i’d like to say that i wouldnt mind but the way the beta was deemed too good for plus members kind of put me off all together and the fact that there was no response in the forums or answers only people stating the difference between a beta trial and a beta demo which really was insignificant considering ps plus states i would be able to have access to exclusive betas trials which made there points null and void. i rember the interview at gamescom where you said if you did a beta you would try to make it available to everyone. instead you made it available to random people and exsisting testers. I know a couple who got the beta and have only played it once. it’s because of that particular attitude of not being deemed good enough to meet the means test even though you dont know i wouldnt meet it that regardless of release date i am already reconsidering wether i should purchase this game
Posted on 23 September, 2010 at 12:15 pm by Alex Pavey
Hi dante_zero – sorry that you weren’t able to get onto the current beta trial, and I understand that it’s frustrating. Unfortunately there are times when beta trials are required to test specific things, and technical reasons mean that the number of people accessing the trial have to be limited.
Plus subscribers are very important to us, and we know that many of you are big LBP fans – so we are investigating a number of ways to make sure that more of you get the chance to explore LBP 2 – look out for more news soon.

I’m not angry, just really disappointed and wondering what’s a good family game to get on christmas to show all the family that the PS3 is far better than the Wii for such things. The Move games so far have been generally pretty poor and don’t seem to have much coming out anytime soon. LBP2 would have been absolutely perfect. Suppose LBP would suffice though unfortunately scratched my disc taking it out of the PS3 one time and it no longer loads. There’s nothing else that has the playability, appeal, variety and all around charm for all ages that LBP has.
