When I play a game there’s one thing I hate more than anything else. It’s worse than getting owned by some 14 year old kid who sputters profanities like he’s on some kind of drunken phone-call rampage. Worse than someone spawn camping. Even worse than someone button-bashing and still managing to beat you.
Cheating.
Specifically, the game cheating. When I mess up, I know I’ve messed up. I don’t get gratification from the computer fixing it for me. Imagine the AI in games always did that for you? Every shot is a headshot, every time you throw the ball – touchdown, every time you shake the controller – knockout. Fun for five minutes and then, well, might as well just let the console get on with it because it’s not you playing the game; it’s the game playing itself.
John Daly’s ProStroke Golf has been designed to avoid this. When you hit a shot it doesn’t home-in on the hole. It doesn’t magically alter its trajectory in midair because your golfer is just that good. When you hit a shot, YOU hit the shot: if you hit it right it goes where you aimed. ProStroke has realistic physics so, yes, if you don’t plan a shot correctly your ball can skip off the green and end up in the sand. But how much more satisfying is it to know that when you chip into the hole from that bunker that it was all you? No homing-ball, no aftertouch, just your skill and planning.
It’s all about control and so we’ve put that control into your hands, whatever your skill level or preferred control system. Want to use a three-click system? Sure, if that’s what you want to do. Personally, I think you’d have more fun using the analogue controls, as the on-screen feedback is much more satisfying and the system feels closer to a real swing. Why not try the traditional golfer’s view of the game, staring down the club in ProStroke view? Not only can you shape your shot by shifting your stance, just like in the other modes, you can even shift your golfer’s weight as you take your shot! This can be the difference between being a good golfer and being a great golfer. Add the PlayStation Move motion controller into the mix and you’re swinging as if you were playing on a real course. Which in some ways, you are!
All the courses in the game are fully playable 18 hole courses, not just snapshots. In many other golf games the world ends on either side of your current hole but in ProStroke you’re going to be playing on a contiguous set of holes. Not only can you see the other holes as you near them, you can use them just like a real life golfer could. If you think it might be beneficial to drive onto a different fairway, go for it!
And these aren’t just fictional courses either! We’ve got the Brabazon Course at the Belfry, one of the most famous courses in the world and the spiritual home of the Ryder Cup. We’ve got courses designed by some of the most famous golfers in the world: The Shire, designed by Seve Ballesteros; Dale Hill, designed by Ian Woosnam; Chart Hills, designed by Nick Faldo. We even have Mystic Rock, designed by world famous course designer Pete Dye and home to the 84 Lumber Classic and the John Daly waterfall. All these courses are modelled from telemetric data and great care has gone into getting the look and feel of each environment, right down to the individually modelled clubhouses and tee markers. As you play, the dulcet tones of Sam Torrance and Peter Kessler will talk you through the course, advising you on the difficulties and distances you’ll face on each hole.
You will, of course, be playing these courses against one of the most familiar and iconic golfers in the world. John Daly is like a force of nature, hammering the ball down the fairway before delicately chipping it onto the green. He is the focus of the game and you’ll have to face off against him in a variety of challenges on all the courses if you want to make it to the tournaments. He’ll really put you to the test.
As for multiplayer, well, it’s golf, right? You’re going to want to play against your friends so that’s what we let you do. Grab three of your friends, get online and enjoy a round of golf. Watch replays of your friends’ shots or skip them, it’s up to you. If you want to get some friends around the console, hot-seat multiplayer is available for three buddies there too. The dev crew here at Gusto Games have already challenged me to a game!
With John Daly’s ProStroke Golf YOU are in control of the game, not the other way around: Play how you want to play.

Interesting title.
When is this coming to stores?

There’s no firm release date penned in yet but we’re working on that!

Will we see a demo released on PSN for this? Going by the dev diary video it looks like the Move controllers work very well. but I’d like to give it a try before buying if possible.

I’ll second Ravenblade86. The Move controller works very well but implementations vary in quality so much. Nice to try before you buy!

I understand completely. With the new tech that’s coming out on all consoles, it’s really important to get a bit of hands-on time with a game before you drop some hard earned cash on it. If you’ve already got a PlayStation Move, when the demo comes out I’m sure you’ll enjoy seeing how well it works in ProStroke.

Constructive criticism, I like that.

I’m very interested in this title, I have Move and would really like a decent golf game to use with it – after seeing a recent Move gameplay demonstration over at Gametrailers this seems like it could be ideal! From the video Move seemed really well implemented and you basically set up the whole shot without pressing a button – it was all about position and swing style, and the 1:1 feedback looked spot on too.
I would need a Move enabled demo on PSN just to confirm it’s as good as it looks, but I’m definitely interested in picking this up for Move…

We got some really good feedback from the E3 demo of the game. Gamers were flocking from other booths to have a go and were very complimentary about how intuitive and realistic the ProStroke swing system feels…
or so I’ve been told by the guys that went.
I didn’t get to go this year.

@l2ngamesl
Castle Crashers is really poor. I wouldn’t bother waiting for it. Played both the Xbox version and the US PS3 version and it’s still just a boring game that fails to be even remotely as fun as classic scrolling beat ‘em ups.
Anyways in regards to this game. Looks like a good golf game if you like golf though not sure why golf even needs to be a video game. Football I can maybe understand with needing a big pitch a load of people.

Well, not everyone can afford to pay a small fortune in green fees, travel the world to the best courses, buy professional clubs, organise an outing with friends, etc! Also, I don’t know about you, but on a real course, I can’t drive 300 yards!
Like most sports games, it’s all about trying to give you an experience that is tough or impossible to achieve in the real world. We’re trying to bring golf into your front room so that you can enjoy it whatever the weather, with distant friends and even in the company of a professional golfer!

Golf = boring even virtually.

I’ve heard people say similar things about video games in general.
I politely disagree.

My comment were removed because I said Tiger Woods video games suck, wooow!

We try not to fight with other golf games!
We’re more than good enough to stand on out from the crowd and ProStroke is aiming for an audience that’s looking for a more realistic golfing experience.

After hearing about how accurate the Move motion control in this game is, I cannot wait until I get a chance to try a demo.

Hi all. Just so you know, there will be a demo out BEFORE the game is released, so you’ll get to try the Move motion control system before you buy the game. We’re confident that when you try it, you’ll see how accurate it is for yourselves.

The implication of the article is that other golf games adjust the path of the ball so as to assist the player – I’d love to know what golf games supposedly do this? I’ve spent a lot of time with Everybody’s Golf and although it’s got some cheeky tricks at the extremes of ball-spin, I’ve never once felt like the game was giving me a helping hand…
Posted on 29 September, 2010 at 3:02 pm by Derek Hartin
I’m not one to point fingers and name names but let’s just say that, a lot of the time, you might not notice games giving you that helping hand. That’s cool but as soon as you notice the amount of times your ball curls round the back of a hole and miraculously drops in…

@RagingRaven874
Yes Tiger Woods is already out is fairly cheap but the Move implementation is horrendous.

We think we’ve managed to make a really good Move swing system with ProStroke. I’m really looking forward to people getting a chance to try out the demo and the finished game!

I wish they would make a golf game that is a simulator, with good physics & graphics, but also has a crazy golf game attatched and fun party play games. I think they can be too straight-faced at times.
Posted on 29 September, 2010 at 3:10 pm by Derek Hartin
This is a good point. It’s sometimes tough to nail-down a particular market. We’re aiming for people who want a golf game that feels more realistic. We were constantly getting feedback from gamers who were playing other golf games that they wanted better physics, a more accurate swing system, a game more like real golf and so that’s what we’ve gone for.
If we get lots of feedback saying that people want more mini-games and crazy golf, that’s the sort of thing that makes an impact on future titles.

whoa those guys in the vid should have not taken those herbal highs… looks like their eyes are gonna burst if they don’t hit someone first… really off putting
Posted on 29 September, 2010 at 3:05 pm by Derek Hartin
Haha! They don’t look particularly comfortable in front of the camera but let me tell you, acting naturally with the knowledge that you’re going to be viewed by hundreds or potentially thousands or people around the world is stressful!
Did you like the content?

I’ll deffo look at the demo and see how precise it is with my bad boy Move wand

looks infinitely better than ea’s pga tour golf 23 sponsored by tiger woods… particularly the move suppot
Posted on 8 October, 2010 at 10:27 am by Derek Hartin
Glad you think so! It’s a very different game aimed to satisfy a very different style of craving. Sometimes you want a game that’s just that little bit more realistic.

I’m looking forward to try this game. It looks pretty nice. Would’ve been fun with a extra mode for it with mini golfs and such also. I kinda miss that in “pro golf” games. Mini golf is always fun when drinking and just messing around with friends.
Posted on 8 October, 2010 at 10:29 am by Derek Hartin
Hmmm, we’re getting a fair amount of feedback along these lines. It’s good to know what people are looking for. Something to keep in mind for the next game! Thanks!

Seems like they were made for each other, right? The Move controller even looks like it’s got a squishy golf ball stuck to the end!
