Do the phrases ‘Bagel Toaster’ and ‘Deadly Donut’ mean anything to you? If so, then you’ve probably been with us from the start.
On Wednesday it was 15 years to the day since the original PlayStation launched in Europe so it seems fitting, this week, to use this space to share your fondest memories of a decade and a half of PS consoles.
Personally, I’d choose playing Pro Evolution Soccer 5 with my housemates at university. We probably averaged a dozen matches a day and I still believe that game cost me a grade in my degree. Nevertheless, who’d think that four guys staring open-mouthed at a screen for two years, silent with concentration, could have such a bonding experience?
Tell us your stories.

What I mostly remember is playing my first rpg in psone which was Legend of dragoon.A very good game with a fantastic story.I spent hours and hours trying to master all the moves.I was waiting the moment to return from school so I can play this game. All the playstation consoles are great but the most epic was,is and will be the psone as it is part of my childhood memories

We had a post earlier in the week with someone saying that the first zombie in Resident Evil was a great moment, and I totally agree. I loved all of the consoles, but the original Playstation was just so different to anything else out there at the time that it had a great impact.

i’ve gotten the most enjoyment out of the ps2 of all the playstation machines.
i’ve lost count of the number of hours i’ve spent on ps2 rpgs, hundreds and hundreds of hours i reckon.
if there has been one thing a little lacking in the ps3 line up in the past it’s the jrpg, though that’s changed recently.
then there’s classics like okami, ico, mgs 3, beyond good and evil.
and series like gta, kingdom hearts, god of war and the silent hill games.
next to the megadrive, my favourite games console of all time.
Posted on 1 October, 2010 at 5:26 pm by James Gallagher
That’s a pretty strong argument. The PS2 is definitely the machine I’ve spent the most hours with. For me it was sports games with my mates and GTA games when alone. I lost my PS2 (long, bizarre story) in the third year at uni and was too poor to replace it, so I missed out on the likes of SotC, God of War and Okami.

PS3. Mainly because I don’t/didn’t own any of the others. But I also had a lot of fun on the PS1 over at a friends house.
And I got a recommendation for (one of) next weeks debate: How much do you care for the cover/box/disc graphics of a game.
Because I know I’m not the only one who doesn’t like the layout of platinum versions of games. I would like to see what people prefer (or don’t care and just want a disc to play the game, even if it is a pink disc!).

Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 and RE: Chain of Memories, plus Final Fantasy X and all the Ratchet and Clank games, PS2 gets my vote! Though a close second is PS3, can’t get enough of LBP!

PlayStation 2. This console has the greatest game library of any console, ever.

Mike does a superb job on here and this week he was unavailable. It’s not a big drama.
Special offers are not my department, but you guys who sign up to Plus did get to play the Assassin’s Creed beta this week… it doesn’t relate to the anniversary but it is great, exclusive content that people have put in a lot of work to secure.

The most fun I have had with a game is a hard choice between eye toy play and LittleBigPlanet. Both were brilliant games.
My sister ended up breaking the light when she got a little carried away on eye toy play!
I think the PS2 was the best console, because it had the awesome timesplitters games. Those games were brilliant.
Posted on 1 October, 2010 at 5:44 pm by James Gallagher
Just played LBP2 at the Eurogamer Expo and I get more excited each time. I hadn’t seen a level with the gravity turned way down before but it was really floaty and surreal.
Seconded re: Timesplitters.

My Ode to the Playstation family brand:
PSX was amazing – 3D gaming in the home! Tomb Raider! FFVII! MGS! GT! Buying the OPSM and getting s free demo disc was very exciting as a 13 year old! And the games were so “easy” to get hold of, if you catch my drift…thank God Sony didnt stick with Nintendo to finish the SNES CD-ROM thingy! This was my first ever Compact Disc player too!!
PS2 was probably my most enjoyable though…and my first DVD player (my first DVD was Enter the Dragon)! I actually bought the first Dynasty Warriors before the console launch as I was too excited. Then I stayed up ALL night with my school mates playing Time Splitters death match on launch day! Then we had blockbuster after blockbuster! The first 3D GTA! God of War! The PS2 even brought console gaming into a new era with games like Killzone and Hardware (that free one you got when you signed up for Central Station)…oh and MGS3 online!
PSP was ok……I still play it to this day, but only big exclusives like MG:Peace Walker, I’m afraid…

continued….
PS3 is my current console of choice and I’m proud of it! Free gaming. Blu-Ray fims! PlayTV! Uncharted 2! Warhawk! PS Home! LBP! Killzone 2!
Singstar online! Resistance! MAG! Media streaming from PC’s! You know the score so I wont go on.
I am a PS FanBoy I guess, I’ll have to admit – I own all the other consoles but Sony are safe and legit!
Happy Birthday to you!
Posted on 1 October, 2010 at 5:37 pm by James Gallagher
What a pleasant post. I also remember the DVD player on PS2 being a big deal. We had one on the house but that was mine, in my room!
As I’ll probably say heaps here, Ps2 was all about sports games at uni for me, including working in shifts to finish the endurance races in Gran Turismo 4. There was so much pressure with my flatmates watching me, ready to kick my behind if I lost concentration and span out after all that work.

weird poll TBH
Which has given you the most enjoyment?
people voted for ps one and ps2 alot
that means, that people still not enjoy ps3 above psone and 2.
that must be a sign, that sony must focus more on the gamers.
more exclusive content, listening to people about cross chat, our any other extra.
tbh what i miss is a forum on this blog, if you encounter any problem in a game, its a pain to get help, our that the problem be forwarded to the developers.
Posted on 1 October, 2010 at 5:52 pm by James Gallagher
PS3 is in the lead and, considering we know from a previous poll that most readers here are hardcore gamers, it’s doing pretty well.
You know we have the forums over at http://community.eu.playstation.com.

As I said in my post on the story on wednesday, my first memory of the Playstation brand was in a childrens’ hospital in Dublin, where my sister was being treated for her first dose of leukaemia. I went to the activity room in the cancer ward while she was getting a check-up, and played the first Spyro the Dragon. My mind was blown, and now 12 years later, I am a proud owner of a still working launch 60GB PS3, my sister got the all clear in August and I am, and forever will be, a proud and loyal Sony customer!
Here’s to another 15 years, and beyond of the wonder of the Playstation brand!
Posted on 1 October, 2010 at 6:05 pm by James Gallagher
Wow, thanks for sharing this. A few people in the office clear out their drawers and send a few games to Great Ormand Street hospital just before Christmas; if you have any gathering dust then it would be really kind to do the same.

The PS1 was my first console, and I’ll never forget the day that my mum finished Spyro 2 before me! But really, the PS2 was my love. The first time I put Final Fantasy X in and watched that opening cutscene cemented me as a gamer for life.

@george1821 yes That the idea unfortunately SCEA has No idea of the purpose of a birthday & silly enough to offer it‘s user base offer it was Not much of the offer.
you could say SCEE was smart but others won‘t agree.

Ps2 gave the best enjoyment Ps3 just seems to keep taking things away or taking too long to add new functions, like im not buying ps2 games all over again cause you want to put them on blu ray, Start bringing some stuff out, make more god damn avatars ive had the same one for 3 years now, we dont want just game avatars make sum, you know pay a artist to draw somthing ha maybe work on backwards compatiabilty its really getting annoying how we cant play ps2 games dont have money to waste on buying another ps2 console. Things need to changed, change how you work bring in someone who can train you or give you advice on new software to get things done faster

I have to admit, I have a WII, an Xbox, a 360, a PSP, a Nintendo DS and a PS3, and I must say, from now onwards, I will never buy an XBOX again. I was once a vicious opposition of the Ps 1 & 2, but the PS3 has changed me, so that got my vote!

Posted on 1 October, 2010 at 6:15 pm by Tricai
Ps2 was the first gaming console I ever bought for myself, so I guess I have my fondest memories with it.
(I always wanted ps1 as a kid though, but my parents never let me buy one.. Got to give a huge plus for ps2′s backwards compatibility! )
Not to mention Ratchet and Clank, Okami, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts… So many good moments.

Of course, the PS2 and PS3 are amazing. But you can’t beat the PS1. The best console ever made. Whether it was driving my blocky Subaru in Gran Turismo, or trying to save my workmates from being turned into Mudokon pies. Ahh, the memories…

That’s a tough one James, I love them all and my PSP/PS3 see almost daily use just like the PS2 and PS1 did.
I think I’ll have to go with the PS1 since that’s where I first played a lot of my favourite franchises/games. I’m talking games like Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Future Cop:LAPD, Blood Omen/Soul Reaver, Metal Gear Solid, Rollcage, Ape Escape, Final Fantasy and so on.
I only bought my brother’s PS1 of him when he lost interest in it because of Tomb Raider 2, I played the first game to death on my Saturn. If TR2 had’ve been released on the Sega Saturn I may have never bought a PS1….and missed out on a some of the best games I ever played, that’s a scary thought.

All those fond memories of the PS2 take the cake, honestly. The PS2 was my sister’s when I was younger. Some really great times of watching her play Silent Hill games while sat cross-legged on the floor. I moved away from my Gamecube after a while and got myself a PS2 from which I went through one some of the greatest games ever made.
It really was the best console and still is because of its library. No modern game no matter how advanced and epic it is can compare to the weird old horror flicks I picked up or the obscure games like The Suffering, Urban Chaos (one of the best shooters in the world), Devil May Cry 3, Manhunt, Forbidden Siren, Prince of Persia, Silent Hill and of course, GTA.

PS3 wins, hands down.
Before the PS3, I knew that I liked games a lot, I had forty odd games for PS1 and just shy of thirty for the PS2. Then the PS3 came along, and I realised how much I loved videogaming, it became a way of life in a way, I started to spend time browsing the web for the latest news, I even got myself writing for a PlayStation website.
The PS3 just made everything so much more real for gaming: the incredible graphics, the networking, the multimedia centre all in one box, and the high definition.
It was the PS3 that made my decision on what I wanted to do for my working life – I wanted to make games.
So yeah, PS3 is definitely my top console – who knows what the future may bring.

All hail the PS2! I don’t think I will ever get the same amount of enjoyment out of a console ever again, and it’s mostly because I’m growing up. I enjoyed the PS1, and I love my PS3, but Playstation’s second iteration just so happened to coincide with teenage years, a.k.a gaming central! =D

I can’t believe PS1 is coming last place in the consoles! I have so many fond memories
It can have my vote, I’ll never forget Spyro 2 & 3 or Crash.
Maybe I’ll vote again for PS2, since I remember the Jak & Daxter demo being incredible.

Hmm, I’m torn between the PS2 and 3, since I have a lot of memories from the PS2, as learning my GF how to hover/fly with Spyro the firt time she tried the PS2 (no need to say that today she loves playing PSs) or when I met her kids for the first time and they almost immiaditly accepted me as I played Playstation and they never met an adult playing that (or watched cartoons)
With PS3 I also has a lot of fond moments, like the look on the kids faces when they got their own PS3 for X-mas 2 years ago or geting the first trophy and later getting the first Platinum.

PS1 gave me the most enjoyment. JRPGs were the main reason I bought the PS1 and PS2, and the PS1 have some truly great JRPGs. Unfortunately, the PS3 doesn’t come even close to the previous consoles in this regard.
In any case, Suikoden, Suikoden II and Final Fantasy VII are all utterly brilliant, and then the excellent Final Fantasy VI was re-released for the PS1 as well. The ultimate JRPG machine. And then there are more good games like Wild Arms, Star Ocean 2, Legend of Dragoon, Vagrant Story and so on.
The PS1 also have the best platform games ever made, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Klonoa: Door to Phantomile.
And the first Megal Gear Solid is still the best entry in the MGS series.
So yeah, the PS1 is where it’s at.
Some PSOne Classics I would love to see on the Store:
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (on US PSN, but not here, why?)
Suikoden (on US PSN, but not here, why?)
Suikoden II
Klonoa: Door to Phantomile
Wild Arms
Mega Man Legends
Mega Man Legends 2
It would be absolutely wonderful to see the PS1 game Chrono Cross on PSN too, it was never released in Europe during the PS1 days so we never got any chance to play it, so why not make an effort to bring it to us now?

Hard to choose:
Ps3 personally brings me back to Gaming. Never finished so many Games since Ps3.
Ps2 was good. First Online Experience, Ratchet & Clank, Amplitude(!!!!!), Socom, Singstar, Eyetoy, Tekken Tag
PSOne my Childhood:
Resident Evil, Tekken , Tony Hawks Pro Skater (played the Demo 100 times), Phandemonium, Life Force Tenka (First Game!), Figthing Force, Time Crisis, MK4, Die Hard Trilogy, Kurushi, Crahs Bandicoot, Metal Gear
Psone are in my memories. But PS3 brings me back to Console Gaming and i enjoy it more than the PSone and PS2 Time.

I say Playstation 2 because I spent 9 years with one, so that’s a lot of enjoyment over the years.
And the countless awesome games it has makes it the one that gave me more enjoyment… so far, because Playstation 3 will give me even more.

I absolutely LOVE my PS3 and I mean that but I had to say PS2 simply because I had my PS2 for so long and played so many games on it it was unreal.
When I have had my PS3 as long as I had my PS2 then my choice may possibly change.
