It’s Halloween this weekend and, if you’re not going to a party or knocking on doors begging for sweets, quite a few of you may well be playing some scary games. Of course, now is a good time to list the most frightening games out there, but I’d like to extend it a bit further and ask what exactly creeps into your dreams and makes you scared to pick up a Wireless Controller with the lights out.
Are you looking for a good old fashioned leap from the sofa, like when the Cerberus burst through the window in the original Resident Evil, or something more psychological that leaves a grimy residue in your mind for weeks afterwards?
Let us know in this Halloween Friday Debate and have fun, whatever you’re up to.

I don’t think it’s the fright that freaks me out in games, but the quiet before the scare, were your senses are tingling in anticipation of a jump. The best are the ones were nothing happens.

Genuine ‘jump out of your seat’ moments
the other stuff doesnt cut it for me that much

Jump scares all the way, psychologically affecting scares are boring to me for some reason. For example, I found Paranormal Activity scary because I didn’t know what to expect, but I found The Exorcist really dull because I know it’s not real, so nothing psychological affects me when watching.

Scariest things are Japanese horror games. Just plain weird things mixed with genuine “jumping” moments. Fatal Frame one of the scariest games ever.

I would say “jump out of your seat moments”, but those rarely happen anymore these days.
The first Resident Evil zombie dog smashing through the window is probably still unmatched as one of the best of those moments. 15 years later after we’ve seen “everything” and after games have gotten much better to control, more streamlined and easier in general, that kind of scare is hard to recreate.

I think both jumpy moments and the psychological stuff. Dead Space, for example, had a great combo of both and it made for a scary and thrilling experience, especially when played in the dark on your own! Hearing a monster somewhere but not knowing quite where is great and you end up building your own apprehension each time you turn a corner or enter a room as the monster could be lurking there.

@6 Although, adding to my last point, Project Zero is a mixture of both jump and psychological scares, and it’s pants-wettingly terrifying.

Games, like movies, depends on loud noises to frighten people these days. Although Dead Space was a recent game that really put me on the edge of my seat, use to come off sweating after a session with that.
Bioshock 1 had a few moments where you would turn around and a bad guy would be just standing there, likewise Half-life 2 when searching a room and those spider thingys would just jump at your face from nowhere, both of those games, while not being dedicated horror games, probably scared me more than actual horror games.

One thing that will never wear out on me is the high pitched violins whenever something is about to happen. Quite a few games employ this technique, although I think Dead Space had made the best effect out of it, but it builds up the suspense sooo much and creeps me out quite a bit.

It’s scary that SCEA announce their pre-order bouses in plenty of time for their customers to take advantage of, whilst it seems SCEE just don’t bother and prefer their customers to lose out.
Where are the God of War: Ghost of Sparta pre order bonuses, the game is out in seven days?!?

For me that would be the thought that you might be scared in a few moments. You know what I mean?

I vote ‘Something strange… Like triangles” because of Silent Hill 2.
Scariest game I ever played.

I have to say, psychological scares are really what get me frightened. The Silent Hill series, particularly Silent Hill 2, are the only games I’ve played that really get me nervous. I literally couldn’t play SH2 for more than an hour at a time, since that eerie atmosphere, the probing tentacles of unease eventually just wear your defences down.
What bothers me is that there’s basically no games that fit this type of horror game any more. Resident Evil 5 was an action game, nothing remotely scary about it. Dead Space touches closest to it, but there is still an emphasis on action and the “OMG I’m on my last clip and they keep comingohmygodwhatamIamIgoingtodo” reaction, which is fine…but not my preferrence. To be quite honest, the most frightening game on my radar at the moment is Atlus’ Catherine…mostly because I have no clue what it’s about and the imagery is nice and disturbing!

What makes a game scary? Easy. If EA (We want cash because our employees still aren’t underworked and overpaid enough), Activision (Bobby Kotick is gaming cancer) or THQ (Lets churn out another mediocre licensed game to line our useless employees wallets) helped create it.
For PS3 owners, Bethesda (“We like to suck on Xbox [DELETED] for cash, so you can have your DLC in a year, PS3″) also counts

Is that tame enough for your standards, Dictatorblog?

Dead Space for sure!
Like MRigz I ended up sweating sometimes or lowering the voice because I thought I heard another Necromorph coming

The only decent horror game these days is Dead Space and probably Dead Space 2. Silent Hill ruled in the past but no longer. The way it got under your skin with psychological fear tactics was amazing and really opened my eyes to what video games are capable of. Dead Space delivers in the old-school type jump-scare tactics, gruesome monsters and puts players in a position where they have to dismember their enemies – Perfect. Its futuristic settings are a joy to explore, look at and interact with as well as whole space thing being a bit scary – In space, nobody can hear you give a bad review.

Triangles are scary.
Take Pyramid Head for example.

Surprised Silent Hill 2 receives so much more attention than the original. The PSone classic (original version, not toned-down UK(/EU?) release) was the most terrifying. Nothing compares to those ‘skinless babies’ in the school corridors. Then you found the ghost ones… uh, oh; I best not continue or I’ll need counselling again…

I think you guys @ SCEE need to start responding to us here or make a new post regarding GT5 as your silence is just adding to the frustration, we just want a update on whats going on, it’s not good enough staying silent. Please just say something, anything! please!

There is a game called Amnesia: The Dark Descent which has been described as the “most successfully frightening game to have been made.” It’s available on PC. Please, please James, ask someone at SCEE to contact the devs (they are Swedish) and see if they will put it on PSN. There are not enough of these indie games on PSN.

There are some great games to choose from, but for me nothing is as good as the first F.E.A.R. game. (must be played in a dark room with either headphones or 5.1) It’s the suggestive horror of the game that works so well. Is there something behind me….. RUN!

I love stuff like the Cerberus jumping through the window in the original Resi – but I much prefer what Silent Hill 2 did, where the fear was constant and sustained, and it totally messed with your head in the process.
Pleeeeeeeeeeease release this somehow on PSN (I know it’s a PS2 game, you guys can figure it out though!).

I won’t say what it was so as not to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t played this, but, there was a bit in the middle of Uncharted Drakes Fortune that freaked me out! Scary
