Hi guys, just wanted to let you know that there is a great new upgrade available for PlayTV out now.
If you already own PlayTV then you now have the chance to get your hands on some really exciting new features, exclusive to PlayTV on the PS3.
These fantastic features include
- Series Link*: Never miss your favourite series with the addition of series link to PlayTV in the UK. (*Not available in Australia or New Zealand)
- Live Chat with friends while watching TV: Enjoy your favourite shows together with this unique new feature. Set up your own chat room or join an existing one and text chat to your friends or anyone on PSN without interrupting your TV Viewing. Up to 64 people can be in a chat room at a time and you can choose if you want your chat room to be open to your PSN friends, everyone on PSN or just the people you invite.
- Recommendations: recommend programmes to Facebook and PSN friends. Share your favourite shows, films and soaps with your friends and get them involved. Send a recommendation to your Facebook wall with your own comments or recommend it to any of your PSN friends. PSN recommendations appear as a message to your selected friends with your own message and a link for them to record or watch the show automatically.
- Community Favourites*: Need some inspiration to help you decide what to watch or just curious what your friends and the PSN community are watching? Check out what people are watching right now, what they have been watching in the last 2 weeks and what they have set to record over the last two weeks. You can sort the info by your friends to see just what they have been watching, or the overall number to see what’s most popular with the PSN community. (*Not available in Australia)
- Premium Programme Guide*: This update also includes a brand new, premium programme guide that gives you loads more info on the TV shows happening now and up to 7 days in advance. The internet based programme guide from tvtv allows you to see far more information on programmes than before and with PlayTV’s great search function, this enables you to search for the perfect show or film based on things like actors, directors, genres, etc (*Not available in Australia)
All you need to do to get these great new features is update your PlayTV software, (there is a patch available now in the updates section of the PlayTV main menu), then go to PlayStation Store and purchase the ‘Live Chat Upgrade’ for £6.29 / €7.99 / 12.95 AUD / 15.50 NZD. As soon as it downloads you will be able to start chatting with your PSN friends that have the updgrade about the big game or latest plot twists and letting everyone know what your favourite shows and films are.
PlayTV ‘Live Chat Upgrade’ is rated 16+ on the PlayStation Store to make sure that it remains safe and secure with the new ‘Chat TV’ feature. Chat rooms are also moderated and participants can be blocked from your feed while settings are also in place to protect user’s privacy and control what information you share with everyone.
Check out playstation.com/playtv for more details.
If you have any questions about this new Upgrade for PlayTV then please let me know.
Cheers,
James

So not happy.
I have downloaded the latest update, but not the paid for update.
PlayTV used to work a treat. Now it has lost the ability to set weekly record (in favour of the paid for series link), and when I’m playing GT5 it constantly seems to fail to either start recording or finishes early.
This is not good.
I want to go back to the previous version but can’t.

Since the upgrade my PlayTV installation has twice hung on the PlayTV splash screen, the fix being to delete the recordings and settings. Now that wasn’t a huge problem first time, as i used to export or watch shortly after recording, however i can’t do that now, otherwise SeriesLink will record it again, and i can’t watch anything when it hangs like it has, and i have to delete the recordings and settings to get back in !
Also i have to setup all my SeriesLink settings again, which will start to build my recordings back up, and one assumes at some point it will die again. The long and the short of it is that i can’t trust that PlayTV will now record, or allow me to access my recordings, which kind of defeats the point ! I guess i’ll either have to be antisocial this Christmas, or get a TV guide, plug my VCR back in and hope i don’t run out of tape !
I’ve never have the problem before, the recordings are only 12GB in total, which was generated by 6 series spread over the week, programme lengths between 30 and 60 minutes, and i have 194GB free currently on my PS3.

Any idea when we can expect a fix to problems this update has caused? Since installing the update I have to reinstall PlayTV 3 times, each time losing everything that I have recorded.
A quick search on Google and comments on this blog reveal this is not an isolated incidence.
It’s a shame because PlayTV was a great product but unfortunately this update has ruined it. It’s now borderline useless.

2.2 Out, and there’s still a black border on live tv and recorded tv with a Sony Bravia TV.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PUT SOME IMAGE SCALING OPTIONS IN! PLEASE!
It’s a bit naff that you can’t get a full picture with Sony PlayTV on a Sony Bravia TV, as reported by many users:

Does anyone know what 2.02 does do ? The about information looks suspiciously like the previous update, though at least setting weren’t reset this, even if i was told to download the premium unlock file ( i suspect i may not have actually needed to do this, and the post-update splash screen and about messages are not aware of the status of this patch ie installed or otherwise ).
Setting > About
Version: 02.02
Added support for new features:
* Chat TV
* Facebook and PlayStation Network recommendations
* Extended Guide information (not available in Australia)
* Community favourites (not available in Australia)
* Series Link (UK only)
The unlock for these features is available from the PlayStation Store

I have never had a problem with Playtv until the last update!! I have reinstalled Playtv 3 times but i still have the same problem. when I start Playtv it freezes on the splash screen, i believe the developers should look in to this as it seems to be problem for a few of us! Is there a way they could put a fail safe in place were if you have to reinstall then you could keep your recordings. Playtv was a good product until the last update, please help us.

To James Thorpe..
Is there any way you can find out if there are plans to support Ireland at all, can you reach out inside the company and find out if there are hard and fast plans

I hate to add to the negativity James, but i have the same problem as Dougle_dude (comment no. 104).
for some reason Playtv doesn’t like to record on BBC 1 (channel number 1) and instead will try to record on the welsh BBC channels (no.s 800 ish) for i don’t really get a picture, or even EPG info at times.
this is extremely infuriating as it renders series link useless. And like the majority of people on this board that was the main reason for making the purchase. The remaining features really do feel like a way to justify the cost of the upgrade.
I’m also not feeling the benefit of the upgraded TV guide either.
It really is a shame that to date most of the updates have improved stability and performance, and then this happens. surely you test the updates before releasing them?
Please can you approach the developers to try and rectify the problems at the very least.
I suspct we can shout all we like about the price but that will not change.
any answers you can give wold be greatly appreciated.
thanks

To James Thorpe..
Can-you convince Sony to include Switzerland in the PlayTV supported countries ? Switzerland is like a small extension of Germany, France and Italy, 3 countries which are “PLayTV SUPPORTED”.
Moreover, there is an UNIQUE case, very interesting and particular for YOUR PlayTV. The cable “Citycable” of Lausanne town, in the french part of Switzerland (http://www.citycable.ch/modules/acccity/). This cable TV broadcast 132 channels from the whole World IN DVB-T standard, which is FULLY COMPATIBLE with the PlayTV.
Therefore, there is, in Lausanne, a always growing PlayTV community I belong to, which actually CANNOT BUY the key to validate the new version 2.02, because the Playstation Store of Switzerland DO NOT INCLUDE PlayTV items. Sony don’t you wan’t our money ?!? LOL
We would be very curious to check here in Lausanne, with the PlayTV set to country “Other” (this is how we set the PlayTV here) if the TVTV feature of this new version work and for how many channels. James, if you have an idea about that, I would pleased to get this info in an answer to this comment.

@mattyp_1983
I’m sure you can just change your scaling on your TV. For me I have my TV at 16:9 for PlayTV and Fit Screen for Games.

Hoping for an update to 2.02 as soon as possible after my PlayTV stopped launching the other day despite using 2.02 for a few days already.
