Few films evoked the spirit of arcade gaming like the original Tron movie back in the 80s and its sequel, Tron: Legacy, is looking to capture the imaginations of 21st Century gamers with lavish special effects, fast-paced action and some of the best use of stereoscopic 3D I’ve seen.
Last night I attended the UK premiere in London and managed to grab a couple of pictures on my mobile phone (sorry about the quality). The first is outside the cinema and the second is inside, as the director and the cast spoke to the audience.
I enjoyed it, especially how the 3D effect ramped up when you’re in the ‘Tron’ world; a stellar soundtrack from Daft Punk; a surprise appearance from on of my favourite actors, Michael Sheen; and the ‘digital de-aging’ of Jeff Bridges, showing how spookily real CG face animation has become.
The film goes out to cinemas on general release on 17 December and the game, Tron: Evolution, was released on PlayStation 3 last week. Here’s a trailer:

The film looks epic, I’m really looking forward to seeing it. As for the game, it looks like a stereotypical pile of film-licensed poop (hence, no actual gameplay footage in the trailer).

So much nostalga from the 80′s flying about film directors recently. Scott pilgrim, The A Team, TRON.
I would really want to see some new original ideas, hell, I’d even be greatfull for a movie based on a top selling game. It would be nice if these people threw the comics to one side for a while.
I’m not hating, I just want new film ideas

A proper Final Fantasy film would be interesting to see, not another full CGI film, one with live actors and copious amounts of CGI… a bit like The Matrix on some illegal intoxication substance.

Completed the game on the weekend. Good stuff. Couldn’t work out how to actually use the Move controls with the light bikes. I’d love to see Tron as a proper videogame series. Tron 2.0 was excellent.
Cannot wait to see the film. Got my tickets for the IMAX.
Any chance of some Tron Legacy promotional goodies on the PSN? I’d kill for a dynamic background.

Security at films premieres get a bit funny about fancy cameras, especially ones with video capabilities!
