Kung Fu Live is the camera-based beat’em-up that will be released on PlayStation Store tomorrow. It uses the PlayStation Eye to throw you into a comic book world of martial arts, giant enemies and spectacular superpowers. I recently caught up with Teemu Mäki-Patola, CEO of Virtual Air Guitar Company, to take an early swing at it myself and grab an interview.
Why did Virtual Air Guitar decide to try something so ambitious with its first game, rather than go for something more traditional?
Our background is in university research where we were working on things like virtual reality interfaces, so that’s our interest as well as our expertise and we wanted to bring some of that to the gaming market. We believe that we can use our research to bring new experiences to games, which is why we set up the company.
What are the biggest challenges in producing a camera-based game like Kung Fu Live?
First of all, it’s really difficult to get the technology side so perfect that you’re confident of it working in people’s living rooms. We are doing skeleton tracking which involves lots of algorithms and really is even more difficult than it sounds.
Are there any limits to who can play the game, in terms of physical size and proportion?
Not really, you can sort of ‘control’ your size by adjusting your distance from the camera, so kids only need to be about 1.5 metres away whereas you or I might need to be 2.5 metres away. We’ve had people at gamescom playing the game wearing all kinds of cosplay costumes with wings and crazy headwear and it worked fine.
How would you describe the art style and who came up with that?
We’re inspired by the kung fu comics of the 70s and 80s and we wanted to go for a stylised take on those. There’s a story mode that has 11 chapters and ten different levels.
How varied are the levels – do they have different themes?
The story starts with you as a comic book shop assistant and then you get sucked into a comic and end up in an adventure. There’s caves filled with lava, Chinese-themed levels and quite a few more.
What kind of moves will you be able to perform?
You’re free to fight however you like as all quick body movements can deal damage to your enemies – you can even do somersaults and axle kicks of you’re athletic enough. The game empowers you by exaggerating your movements, so you only need to jump maybe 30cm in real life to soar three metres in the game.
What of you are holding some kind of weapon, will the game pick that up too?
Sure, you can take a rubber chicken or some other household item, but please be careful! The game is designed for unarmed combat but we have tried it with items and it seems to work fine.
How does the multiplayer work?
The multiplayer is kind of like a party mode with one person in front of the camera and up to four people controlling enemies using a DUALSHOCK 3 Wireless Controller. We couldn’t really have two people playing on camera safely – even if you’re fighting back to back then you could swing back and hit each other in the head or something.
What’s the most interesting thing you’ve seen taking this game around the world?
We had a guy in a wheelchair once that was looking a little sad so I asked him what was wrong and he said that, more and more, he is seeing these types of games that he cannot play. So I asked him to give it a try – it’s not something we had tested but it worked really nicely. It was really fun to see him zooming around the screen running all of the enemies down and he had a great time.
What do you want people to feel when they play Kung Fu Live?
I really enjoy seeing the smiles on people’s faces and it makes me happy that we’re bringing a fun new experience to PlayStation. Also, I don’t think it’s a bad thing that there’s an exercise element and we’re getting kids off their couches and helping them to improve co-ordination in an entertaining way.

Hi DanTheMan121,
thanks for the thumbs up! And sorry for all for late replies. I was stranded in Amsterdam on my way back to Finland and got home only now at 2am.
We are already working on some DLC. Nothing to announce yet but something should be happening on that front.
PSHome is a question mark and we haven’t had time to look into that yet.

This looks great but im not sure its appropriate to have a video that says F**king on the blog, really unnecessary by the creators.

Hmm only problem is the playstation eyes camera really really SUCKS
Posted on 8 December, 2010 at 12:48 am by Teemu Mäki-Patola
Hi ShadowDoGGG,
cannot agree with that. Its one of the best webcams I have used. And has the best light sensitivity (seeing in dark) of all cameras I have tested.

Nice interview, but I would have liked to know more about the in-game comic and if you can download it or not.

I’ve emailed Teemu and asked him to pop onto the comments, so if he receives it, he should be able to shed more light on the comic function. In the meantime, click the Kung Fu Live tag at the bottom of the post to read more about the game.

Hi European_Gamer,
before each comic, the game lets you pose for 5 seconds each for a number of pictures. It suggests a pose but you don’t have to follow. Then a section of the comics story is read to you (camera animated in 2,5D) and your pictures are used for the lead hero of the story (filtered to look more drawn).
You can save 10 different captures for each story section. And you can export the pages into the photos folder of your PS3. From there you can get them printed of e.g. copy them on a memstick.

Your tracking tech looks interesting, with its geometry shape matching. Is it something you are making available to other developers as well?
I think I would have some trouble playing this game personally as my living room isn’t really suitable and I’m a tall guy (very glad that many games only need your upper body at most in that respect), but it looks a lot of fun, almost as fun as you guys look yourselves in that early teaser video.
Kitos, Hyvaa Yvaataa! (sorry my Finnish is … bad
)
Posted on 8 December, 2010 at 12:59 am by Teemu Mäki-Patola
Hi NiwrA,
thanks for the thumbs up and not bad Finnish!
If other devs wish to use the tech, we are certainly open for discussing that. As a general middleware, we haven’t inspected that option yet.
If your livingroom is really small, you need to find a friend whose isn’t, get it there and play it together. Its more fun with a friend anyway when you can also play multiplayer.

@6 no it really doesn’t. Perhaps you haven’t set yours right
Do we have to jump to get through the game? I live in a flat and any jumping will possibly get complaints from downstairs neighbours.
Posted on 8 December, 2010 at 1:01 am by Teemu Mäki-Patola
On easy difficulty you can get through without jumping too. But being able to jump certainly makes more things possible. They don’t need to be large jumps. Just put some soft socks on and use your toes when landing. The silent ninja jump style.

looks horrible i can’t believe we are back at square one with games they did it with ps2 and that was horrible enough.

@Carnivius_Prime
The camera is very poor in quality. You play start the party or anything and it just looks dreadful.
Not sure what I think of the Kinect-like games on the PS3 but I guess if this does work, it means some multi-platforming for Kinect games could come.

Any ps + deal?

We are talking with PS+ so its possible.

@13
I use the Eye for a lot of different uses (Eyepet, taking pics, making videos, webcamming with long distance friends) and it’s absolutely fine quality. Maybe the lighting is poor in your room or something. It’s easily the best webcam type of camera I’ve ever bought and a bargain price it was too.

Looks interesting, but I’m also concerned whether it will be playable in typical night time, living room lighting conditions. Daylight is hard to come by here this time of year
.
Head tracking in The Fight: Lights Out only works for me (and reportedly quite a few other people as well) in bright daylight. But of course there’s no Move tracking in Kung Fu Live, so perhaps they are able to do different things with the camera sensitivity or whatever?

the ps3 eye has two quality modes so to speak. start the party (might have), eyepet, and the fight lights out uses the low quality mode.
i’m not sure yet, but i am thinking kung fu live uses the high quality mode as all it is doing is streaming the video from the camera and making it an in-game object.
why they used low quality video for eyepet is strange. it makes the experience suck overall.

Looks interesting but I’ll wait for demo before I part with my cash I’m afraid. I’m all for supporting developers with niche/unique titles and I loved the 80′s games like Bruce Lee on Spectrum and IK+ on Amiga (Press ‘T’ for trousers) but I need to make sure I can comfortably play the game in the space I have available in my room without destroying my furniture
