Marcus Smith here, Creative Director on Resistance 3 at Insomniac Games. Hopefully you had a chance to check out the teaser for our new trailer which will premier exclusively this Saturday during the Spike Video Game Awards (VGAs).
And, we look forward to sharing more with you about the trailer after the VGAs this weekend.
But even prior to the VGAs, a lot of new info has hit since gamescom via a couple magazine covers that you may have seen – but if you missed them, we’re here to catch you up. First of all, the main protagonist in Resistance 3 is Joseph Capelli, the Sentinal who (HUGE RESISTANCE 2 SPOILERS HERE… if you haven’t played it yet, go buy a copy now!) was forced to kill Nathan Hale at the end of R2. Capelli was dishonourably discharged, and four years later is living in hiding with his wife, Susan, and son, Jack, along with other survivors in the town of Haven, Oklahoma. He’s given up fighting, and is now just trying to hide and survive the Chimeran death squads that roam the planet. But when Dr. Malikov arrives with an opportunity to deliver a blow to the Chimera, Capelli embarks on a road trip to New York City. Resistance 3 is a tale of Capelli’s heroic journey across the country as he encounters the remnants of humanity left in the aftermath of the brutal invasion.
We wanted to show you some of our favourite concept art and screenshots so far, with some director’s commentary on each. Check out our favourite screenshots below.
In Resistance 3, humans are hunted by Chimeran death squads, but various groups have figured out different ways to survive across the destroyed country.
One of our favourite concepts, emphasising the brutality of the world. Capelli using the new Marksman.
The gamescom trailer was meant to give you a glimpse and foreshadow the universe that we are creating, whereas the action in the upcoming VGA trailer will actually represent some moments from the game, and hopefully give you a taste of the world, atmosphere and mood in Resistance 3.
Part of Capelli’s journey involves a treacherous boat journey. This shows off our new Capelli model (yup, he does look different and skinnier after four years of malnutrition as food is now scarce), holding Resistance’s signature weapon, the Bullseye. Folks who are looking carefully will notice the Goliath in the background, as well as a new enemy, the Longlegs.
In Resistance 3, the Chimera have formed into two distinct groups. Feral Chimera, such as the grim seen above and others such as the Widowmaker, are a constant threat to humans and even militarized Chimera.
Early in the game, you’ll meet Capelli’s wife, Susan. Fans of the universe and novelization will recognize her as Nathan Hale’s stepsister.
The military chimera are still a strong presence in 1957, with roving death squads and drones continuing to exterminate any signs of humanity while protecting key Chimeran installations.
This is a screenshot taken from one of our multiplayer maps. The multiplayer locations in the game are set around the world, with many in locations not in the single-player game. This level is the Fort Lamy prison, in the Republic of Chad, Africa. During the single-player campaign, you’ll hear updates about the battle happening there.
Many folks have written to us with questions about gameplay, co-op, and multiplayer. A few quick answers: The weapon wheel returns, allowing Capelli to carry his entire arsenal and letting the player choose which weapons and strategies they want to use for each encounter. New to Resistance 3 are upgradeable weapons, which will give your weapons new abilities and power as you continue to use them. In terms of co-op, we are focusing on a 2-player co-op through the single-player campaign, which can be played online with a friend, or split-screen on your couch. In terms of multiplayer, we are planning a much more focused, progression-based multiplayer experience. We’ll have many more details on the new campaign, enemies, multiplayer and weapons in the weeks to come as we head towards our Autumn 2011 release.
That’s all for now; stay tuned for the newest trailer – we can’t wait to hear what you think.

Adding campaign Co-Op is one of the best things you could ever do for the game if not the best.

Hale did defeat Daedulus, and his blood is ultimately the foundation of the cure for the Chimeran Virus: The Hale Vaccine.

We will not have an impossible trophy like 10,000 kills again.
Sorry, we feel bad about that one in retrospect.

I love the return of campaign co-op, too many games lack that nowadays, I also hope that player two will be able too login with another account(similar to R2).
Anyways, keep up the good work
Posted on 8 December, 2010 at 12:28 am by James Stevenson
We should have two-player PSN log-in as we did in R2.

Sounds impressive. Thanks for showing those concepts. I’m definitely liking the game, so far. Your environments speak of the desperate, oppressive situation – I really like when you can tell aspects of the game’s reality, just from what you see and encounter, around you. Resistance 3 looks like it has a great presence, which was one of the successful defining aspects of this series, that I really appreciate.
I wonder if the Full Moon Show will return to cover this, or are you going the Way of Blogs? I’d like to see that relaxed, chat format back, if it will not impede development.
Great to know a new trailer is just ’round the corner – thanks for stopping by!
Posted on 8 December, 2010 at 12:29 am by James Stevenson
The Full Moon Show will certainly return. We just haven’t had a ton we were allowed to talk about yet

Will we find out why the Chimera simply invaded and killed everyone; instead of negotiating peacefully?
I’m curious, Deadlus was smart, so why not talk it out?

@#11
They said in a video they wouldn’t be doing that again.

I would love to see some stealth in this.
I wish more games were set in Britain. The bleak and misty streets are very atmospheric. It’s why I loved Resistance 1.

I think the Insomniac guys are to hard on themselves, Resistance 2 was an amazing game both online and off, but Resistance 3 looks to be the best in the series to date.

Resistance 1 to this day, is still the only FPS I play with my friens when they are visiting, because it has splitscreen and it’s a ton of fun.
Glad to see splitscreen both on/offline are making a come back (Twisted Metal). Hope it’s also in Resistance 3.

I’m really excited about this and I’m glad that they’re toning down the online multiplayer.
I really hope the diary about the enemies from the first game makes a return in this one.
Can’t wait to see how the plot resolves itself.

I dont think this will ever be quite the same with “Hale” gone,?!
But never the less its no doubt gonna be a superb game, a great storyline & more than likely a contender for a “game of the year award”..???
Hurry up & get it out on the shelfs so i can buy a copy, take it home, add it to my collection, and give it all the love it deserves..!!!!

Dev’s take note: You know there are plenty of interesting locales to base games in that are OUTSIDE the United States. I just get sick of having that country and it’s culture whammed down our throats in ‘popular’ culture, movies and now in nearly every single game. New York has literally been done to death in umpteen different genres, styles & timeframes(Liberty City anyone?). I just think the rest of this planet has so much more to offer too. I mean, what’s going on down in the ‘frozen’ Antartic. Why is the inner area of that continent obfuscated by a huge white circle on Google Earth? What did they find there to warrent such oh-so-familiar obfuscation of the important civilisation evidence that is found in alot of Mars orbital satellite photography? A good reason for devs to explore in future games. Look between the lines at the bigger picture people. peace…

Adding co-op would probably make me rebuy Resistance 1 (play and complete) and buy the sequel. I’m a sucker for co-op games. Shame it’s not third person.. but *shrug* you cant have everything.

“We will not have an impossible trophy like 10,000 kills again.
Sorry, we feel bad about that one in retrospect.
”
Don’t be sorry, it really separated the die-hard R2 players between the non die-hard fans
Albeit, i was in the latter…
I LOVED Resistance 2. Mainly because of the story and concept of it. No other game really gives (for me) that atmosphere that Resistance does.

Thanks Insomniac and Sony for the updates. Can’t wait to see that new trailer. I like the direction you’re taking the story. It looks like Capelli has calmed and mellowed a bit since R2, I think he’ll be a fun character to expand on. And thanks for no more 10,00 kill trophies.

A defensive game were hordes of chimera come to kill u n more n more them come as rounds goo up all so u should have like a big boss should like come up once in a while !!! Would be a great unique selling point 4 R3 (if it had this many x box players would join the ps3 , b abit like zombies in cod….plus if this game does have a type of zombie/chimera mode were u gta kill em u would increase R3 sales even more cause mny ppl who bought COD only bought it fr zombies n if R3 can cmpete with this sort of gme mode R3 will bring in SO MUCH MORE MONEY !!! N A KICK IN THE TEETH TO TRRYARCH FOR DOIN THT DEAL WITH X BOX !!!
