Hello humanoids. This is Chris Harvey from DrinkBox Studios and I’m happy to be sending you a message from across the Internets. It’s a very proud day for the team here in Toronto, because today marks the general release of our first game, Tales from Space: About a Blob. PSN users in North America can pick up the game today, and European users will see the game released tomorrow. If you haven’t heard of our title yet, allow me to tickle your brain. About a Blob is a game where you play as a little blob that grows and grows until he consumes the world. We like to think of it as a puzzle-platforming game set in a 1950′s monster-movie. Your goal is to get from the beginning to the end of every level by eating and growing, and along the way jumping, running, and squishing through puzzles and bosses.
In the beginning of the game the blob has only his wits, his ability to spit objects, and his infinite appetite at his disposal. As the game progresses the blob also attains the powers of magnetism and electricity.
Since we haven’t focused on it on before, in this post I want to touch on the kind of size changes the blob undergoes in the game. At the start the blob is around the size of a marble, but by the end he’s absolutely huge. As the blob gets bigger he can eat bigger things, jump higher and move faster, and as a result previous threats suddenly become inconsequential. Below, for example, you can see the blob as he starts in one of the levels. He’s about the size of the people nearby, and while he would certainly intimidate me, he’s not monstrous. A little while later however, you can see the blob is able to make things much less comfortable for the people around him.
The blob’s size is potentially limitless, and below I’ve provided a preview of some of the scales you play at. In the game the blob goes from threatening cockroaches, to people, to buildings, to cities, to the Earth itself.
We certainly hope everyone enjoys the game, and you should all know that DLC is forthcoming. There are Home Rewards in the game already, and additional items should appear in PlayStation Home soon. A free theme will be provided to PlayStation Plus users, and of course we’ll have a Dynamic Theme, Avatars, and Wallpapers. Most importantly, there will also be in-game DLC, both free and for-purchase, which we’ll start revealing over the next few weeks. Finally, if you’re interested, every week for the next while we’ll be talking about the process of building the game on our development blog at http://www.aboutablob.com/.
Thanks for reading!
- Chris

It’s like Katamari?
Nice to see inclusion of Home and promise of DLC from the start, always a good sign.
…And blobs are freakin’ cool

Thanks!

Yes, it has a growth element like Katamari, but it’s very exploration and puzzle focused as well.

Home rewards? Well, not for everyone. In Scandinavia, Home has been down FOR THREE WEEKS! Sony is doing NOTHING to fix it, obviously…
Shame on Sony!

Really? Down for Three weeks? I wondered why I hadn’t seen anyone speaking any northern languages in Home for a while. SYSOSony. As for Blobby, this blog entry has certainly piqued my interest. And yes dlc, free and for purchase give me hope that Sony are backing this little baby for it’s proper run, like they have with Dead Nation, the Fins did a fine job there making that game(tho the DN Home space need fixing, pronto. The shooting game therein lags dreadfully lurching to the point where the pißy KZ3 space’s shooter aim reticule actually works like heaven in comparison)Hope DN has dlc soon WHAH! lol btw Chris, is there to be a discount for ps+ purchasers of A.a.B.?

You mean we got Mubi that‘s in SD & Not major films that i like to watch, Lovefilm That too in SD even i can’t sign up for a free 30 days useing the browser it‘s sucks.
while SCEA they films are streaming in SD & HD but i expected that from a superior SCEA to our inferior SCEE.
so Yes UK gets crap content like the rest of you lot when it comes to Store matters & we still don’t know what in the list.
@James.G are we getting a Plus update today being wednesday?

This is in my wish-list. I’ll try the Demo.
Too bad this week with all this games (Stacking, This, Explodemon) no-one will have the right launch (and in USA there is PvZ too).
2 Exclusives PS3 games (one against the other? -.-) and 1 from Tim Shafer (free with Plus).
Sony, *clap clap* -.-
What will we have next week? Release 1 PSN title at a time.
Probably I’ll do Plus for Stacking and SOCOM 4 Beta.
About a Blob next time if the Demo convinces me.

Let’s be honest, if you genuinely want fast, stable, streaming high definition movies from a console, within the UK and Europe …..you’re going to need to buy a 360. As much as I love my PS3, SCEE are an embarrassment, and the “black sheep” of the SCEWW family.
Microsoft on the other hand have always treated Europe (the 2nd largest gaming territory), with respect. We get the EXACT same content as the US….at the same time. There’s no waiting for two months for readily available content in the US to pass through qualification….if we ever get it at all. There’s no repetitive excuses as with SCEE, attempting to appear sincere…although nothing ever, ever changes.
Out of both consoles, my PS3 will always be my leading choice. I love the machine, I love the games, I love Sony….I just have zero respect for SCEE. None whatsoever.

@Scuffy_P
Back in the day I would never agree with you but I think you are right! I just wish Sony would not force me to even consider it..
But if this continues I might start saving for a 360 cancel my sub to PS+ and trade it for the on line services the 360 does share with all Europeans..!!

Posted on 9 February, 2011 at 11:55 am by MrLopes
I would never trade in my PS3 I just love it to much but for the love of god start giving us SCEA quality..!! Pleas..
