Allo! New publisher alert and many more highlights in this week’s comic update.
New publisher alert part 2! This week we are delighted to welcome another great publisher on board: Zenescope. Zenescope has created one of the fastest growing libraries of original content and has brought an exciting new feel to the world of graphic novels – and of fairy tales… with a twist! Adapted from the famous TV Series, Charmed #1 brings Phoebe, Paige and Piper back to embrace a new life… and new enemies. Grimm Fairy Tales is a gripping series retelling the most well-known and beloved childhood tales with very modern heroines – through reality and fairy tale, and good and evil. Another great tale is revisited in Neverland – a land that has changed dramatically and where good and evil are not what they seem… Last but not least is the gritty horror comic The Waking, a race against time to investigate murdered victims seemingly rising from the dead to avenge their own deaths… Brr.
If you missed it last week, I would like to highlight once again two other new publishers, Zallag and Devil’s Due Digital. Devil’s Due Digital is a collaboration of the team at Checker Book Publishing Group & Devil’s Due Publishing, and together they are offering an immense library of talent including Clive Barker, Johnny Hart, Tim Seeley and Alan Moore. They brought us the much loved Hack/Slash last week, and this week it’s the no-less impressive Clive Barker’s Hellraiser! Experience horror as only Clive Barker knows it, with the adaptation of one of the most popular horror movie series of all time. Featuring short stories from some of the best in the comics industry, this series both shocked and entertained readers – try it if you dare.
Do you like dimension-spanning storylines, especially if they involve some of the most famous characters in the comics world? Check out Infestation, the IDW event ten years in the making, featuring Transformers, G.I. Joe, Ghostbusters, Star Trek, and even some cool zombies! Something goes horribly awry in the Zombies vs Robots universe, threatening to tear many of IDW’s biggest realities asunder… Who will be affected, and how?
More Batman! Batman Beyond Vol.2, based on the hit animated TV series, begins this week! In the distant future, Bruce Wayne has retired from crime-fighting, and a new breed of criminals has overrun Gotham City. Now Bruce must train Terry McGinnis to use a futuristic Bat-suit and become tomorrow’s Dark Knight!
In Supernatural: Beginning’s End, written by Peter Johnson, one of the TV series co-executive producer, The Winchesters’ hunt nears its end…in New York! You knew Sam left his family to attend Stanford…learn why he made that choice! This gripping, horrifying story—courtesy of TV series writers Andrew Dabb and Daniel Loflin—will explore the raw nerves of what makes the Winchesters unique and volatile.

Hi Pauline,
Sorry to sound like a stuck record, but is there confirmation on whether the NGP will support the comics? It really does determine whether or not I will buy any future comics. Especially regarding long running series (eg Y teh last Man) which could potentially still be being released after the NGP is out.
NGP confirmation plus a subscription model would mean I would be throwing money at the store.
Cheers
Ryan

Hi Ryan – not at all, I understand your concerns. I haven’t received any news, but I will ask around again. Thanks for the feedback!

And i guess there is no news of the comic-store opening in other countries either?
Get on with it!

Hi Swoofah – you’re guessing wrong: the news were posted two weeks ago. We are not getting any more stores at present, unfortunately.

Great to see more new publishers on the store, and Zenescope look to have some interesting titles. Are they do the formatting themselves? Or are they another publisher from Orb?
Great work as always on the store updates Pauline
@1 Ryandsimmons
Pauline might not be able to talk about it yet, but comics are listed as being available from the PlayStation Store for NGP in the “Introducing the Next Generation of Portable Gaming” post on the US PlayStation Blog http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/01/26/introducing-the-next-generat ion-of-portable-gaming/

Thank you very much, as always.
Zenescope do their own comics, and Orb bring us more very cool Devil’s Due this week. Hope you find some you like!

@1: There are so many of us who really would want to throw money at the store, but they won’t let us…
Well, I guess there’ll be other digital comic stores eventually where we can spend our money – it just won’t go to Sony…

Sorry.

Any news on when the now obsolete icon will be removed from the XMB on my PSP?
Posted on 23 February, 2011 at 3:52 pm by Pauline Martyn
No news, it’s not in my care so I can’t give you a precise date unfortunately but if I find out I will mention it here.

Any particular reason for the exclusion of the rest of Europe?
And what about the movie store – same exclusion situation?
Posted on 23 February, 2011 at 3:54 pm by Pauline Martyn
The reason in the statement is “it has been decided that our focus should be on maintaining and improving the current stores.” – I can’t talk for the movie store unfortunately, your best bet is to ask the guys on their blog.

thanks. Can you direct me to their blog?

No worries – you can either wait for a PSN News post here (you can find previous ones in Categories & Archives) and ask, or go to the PlayStation forum where there is a dedicated PlayStation Network thread. Hope you find the info you need!

Hmm, another week without a 2000AD prog? I’m not liking this new lack of consitency from them (not your fault I know).
Oh, and while I don’t expect answers to any of these questions right now, could you keep them in mind for when you do make an announcement regarding Playstation Comics on the NGP:
1) Will the NGP get its own comic reader app, or just use the PSP one via backwards-compatability?
2) As the NGP screen resolution is 2x that of the PSP, will there be image smoothing options and so on?
3) Again with the higher NGP screen rez, will publishers be encouraged to scan their comics in at a higher rez to take advantage of the screen, and if they do, would the current PSP have any difficulty with the larger image files (other than taking up more memory stick space?). Would it be possible to offer 2 versions of the same comic? (high rez and low rez)
Like I said, no need for a “I can’t answer that now” response, just keep then in mind for when you can say something.
Thanks

Sorry about the Progs, more are coming very soon! And thanks for the feedback on NGP, noted.

Just to echo the concerns of others regarding the NGP. I’m expecting to pass the 200 purchased comics mark next week, I really hope when I upgrade my hardware they’re going to be compatible.

I hope so too – and thanks for the support!

@Pauline:
Could you direct me to the post where this is mentioned? Cant seem to find it.
Anywho: “it has been decided that our focus should be on maintaining and improving the current stores.”” This does not really cut it for an explanation. I really do not see the reason for why not giving us access to the same store that other english speaking countries have other that maybe licensing. And if thats the case: SAY SO. You have the technology!
@11 / @Shadowdragoon:
Seems like they have decided to not offer the store at all or something. Se earlier posts and responses.

Sure, it’s: http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/02/02/digital-comics-store-update- 2nd-february-2011/ (3 weeks ago actually, not 2)
Sorry I can’t give you more detail, I don’t have it unfortunately.

yay, comics. ^_^ i think i’ve got a new catchphrase.
anyway.
charmed, cool, i loved that show, i had no idea there was a comic book, needless to say i’ll be getting it.
if only dark horse would sign up for the store then they could bring their buffy books, the season 8 series is supposed to be pretty good.
i like the sound of that infestation book, i read a great trilogy of books years ago where the x-men and star trek universe crossed over, i think q and the watcher were involved somewhere, though that may have been the one off comic book, which still doesn’t take the prize for most unexpected crossover, that has to go to the punisher meets archie book, honestly, that’s real, i have a copy.
anyway, back to this book, i really can’t wait to see how these very different comic book universe will interact with each other.
how would egon react to giant transforming robots?
more freebies is always nice too.
only trouble is, now i’ve signed up for plus i’m really low on space on my memory stick, still too much content is better than not enough.
mind you, a ps3 reader would be handy so i can store and view the comics on it’s much larger hard drive, hint hint
Posted on 24 February, 2011 at 2:26 pm by Pauline Martyn
Woot!
Ah yes I’d love to have Darkhorse on board, all those and Blacksad, and Hellboy…
In the meantime, do check out Charmed and Infestation (and we have a lot of Infestation coming too).
Hint noted.

I would love to see some more series such as some of the X-Men comics, Fantastic Four and others. Is there any plans for Marvel to start publishing them?
Also I was wondering if there is any plans for manga to be released?
Posted on 24 February, 2011 at 2:31 pm by Pauline Martyn
Well we have lots of stuff for you already then.
We have nearly 10 X-Men (or X-Men related) series, 3 Fantastic Four series, and many many more. As for manga we have Tokyopop on board plus a few other cool mangas from IDW Publishing and Markosia.
Everything is on our website if you want to have a look: http://uk.playstationcomics.com/main.html
